All Active Rotarians Contributors The Golden Key was adapted in honor of St. Peter, the patron saint of San Pedro, who is believed to be holding the key to heaven. It is also in recognition at the club’s pioneering effort as the first club in San Pedro, to open the portals of Rotary International to female members. RCSPS was the “key” for the active partnership of both genders in working for the achievement of all the Rotary Objectives. The Golden Key accepts comments, suggestion and contributions from all active Rotarians. RI President - RON D. BURTON

August 2013 Dear fellow Rotarians, Our goal in 2013-14 is to Engage Rotary, Change Lives . All of us know that Rotary has incredible potential to do good work. It's time to recognize how much more we could be doing and start working on new ways to turn that potential into reality. We're going to do this by engaging Rotarians – by getting them involved, by getting them inspired, and by making sure that all Rotarians know just what a gift they have in Rotary. We're going to make sure that the work we do in Rotary is solid, effective, and sustainable. And we're going to make sure that Rotary itself will last – by committing to our goal of 1.3 million Rotarians in our clubs by the year 2015. That goal is a little different from membership goals we've had in the past. The goal isn't just bringing in new members. The goal is growing Rotary. The goal is making Rotary bigger, not just with more members, but with more involved, engaged, motivated members who will be the ones to lead us into our future. Each of us has our own reason for joining Rotary – but I believe we all want to make a difference. We all want to be doing something meaningful. That is absolutely essential for us to remember when we talk about membership. We're not asking just anyone to join Rotary. We're looking to attract busy, successful, motivated people who care. We're asking them to take their valuable time and give it to Rotary. So if they say yes, and they come and join our club, then we'd better be showing them that their time in Rotary is well spent. We have to make sure that every Rotarian, in every club, has a meaningful job – one that makes a real difference to the club and the community. Because when you're doing something meaningful in Rotary, Rotary is meaningful to you. In Rotary, we all have something to give. At every stage of our lives and our careers, Rotary has something for all of us – a way to let us do more, be more, and give more. Rotary gives our lives more meaning, more purpose, and greater satisfaction. And the more we give through Rotary, the more Rotary gives back to us in return.

Ron D. Burton President, Rotary International

Philippines has always been the center of "Typhoons" due to its geographical location especially during the month of August and September. Last week, another typhoon hit the country. This time it hit Luzon Area with 2 days of continuous rain that causes severe flooding. Many abandoned their homes and moved to safer places. During these times, our Past Presidents Rey, Resty and Yolly felt that it’s an opportunity for us to be of service. Last August 20, 2013, I coordinated with some barangays to know who needed us most. Knowing about their situation, I coordinated with District Governor Ona and he extended to us his district fund for our relief operation. I arranged with Puregold to repack goods like rice, noodles, corned beef, biscuits, soap, milk and coffee. Barangay Landayan is one of the area that was affected most in our locality. About 100 families benefited in our operation. Not everybody was lucky to receive their share but still the goods we brought to them surely help them. On Aug 23, the RC Sto Tomas from Batangas City came and deliverd "hot arrozcaldo with boild egg" to the evacuess in Gabaldon Central Elementary School. Myself, Rtns Shirley Tejero and Zeny Vindollo immediately responded in AG Mau Restrivera call to assist them in the distribution.. We finished until 12:30 PM and PP Ed Sarmiento invited us to his place together with the guest Rotarians for a lunch meal. After this operation, the district wanted a big impact project in the distribution of relief goods. They were able to collect 500 bags of groceries from RC Bay, 250 bags and from RC Tiaong Hiyas. We were asked to plan, identify and arrange the date of distribution.. Most of the presidents of Area 1 Group 1 are action men and woman that in short notice we were able to arrange a distribution of the relief goods on August 24, 2013. The Rotaractors of San Pedro and San Pedro South joined force in sourcing donations. They were able to repack 265 bags. Our club members did their donations too and repack it. Rtn Lulu Turreda donated P5, 000 that we decided to use in buying 3 sacks of rice. The Console Village Homeowners also donated canned goods, noodles, shampoo, powder soup and used clothes. From the donations of used clothes, variety of grocery items, our club was able to produced 220 bags ready for distribution. On Augsut 24, our target date, a big number of people gathered at the Barangay Covered Court of Barangay Cuyab waiting for the relief bags. It was a very touching event that people still have their hope despite the calamity that hit them. It was a nice feeling that somehow we did our share in helping them. That day, the Area 1 Group 1, distributed a total of 765 bags. Helping thru service is a big responsibility, but it is inspiring when in return you hear a beautiful remark about what we did for them. People gave beautiful remarks like "‘PAG ME KALAMIDAD, UNA PARATI ANG ROTARIANS sa madaliang pagsaklolo at pamimigay ng relief goods”. They knew what our club stands for. That’s why, whenever we have our relief operations, people were patiently waiting. At the Barangay Hall, they say that "WHEN A ROTARIAN APPROACH THE OFFICE OF THE BARANGAY" they are sure that this organization will extend service to the community but if another organization, they will not give service but they will always ask for service . The difference from Rotary to another organization... Hearing this compliment always lighten my feeling and you feel great that you know you had "Engage Rotary, Change Lives".. Thank you IPP Rey, PP Resty, PP Yolly, PE Bebot, PN Lita, Rtns Bessie, Shirley, Emy, Joy, Rosa, Lulu, Prudence, Zeny for ever ready in giving your time, treasure and talent. Mabuhay po kayo! Let us Pray together that our country shall be spared of these typhoons… Thank you and God Bless! "Gentleness means we speak and act in ways that don't hurt others but that build others up".

Editor and TRF Chair’s corner There is a Chinese saying that goes like, “go on your own if you want to go faster, go with a group if you want to go farther”. But there seems to be a compromise between these two contrasting ideas. Last August 24, Rotarians in Area 1 Group 1, in coordination with Area 1 Disaster Coordinator Boy Batallones, of RC Cabuyao, gave relief goods to a total of 765 families in the evacuation center of Cuyab. These families came from Purok 1, 2, 3 and 4 of Brgy Cuyab. Earlier, the five Rotary Club FC Presidents of Area 1 Group 1, San Pedro - Pres Jun Alvarez, San Pedro South - Pres Fe Aquinde, San Pedro East - Pres Roger Banzuela, Metro San Pedro - Pres Mhon Solis and New Generations - Pres Mhel Encinas along with Area Governor Mau Restrivera, and Deputy District Governor Jun Mendoza held meetings to plan the August 24 relief operation. Two Rotaract Clubs, San Pedro and San Pedro New Generations, also joined the undertaking. Each Club was given its assigned task on August 24, 2013. The two Rotaract Clubs along with RC San Pedro South repacked their relief goods at Brgy San Vicente e-Library staying late the night before preparing for the event of August 24, 2013. RC San Pedro South repacked a total of 220 relief bags consisting of 1 kilo rice, used clothes, noodle, sardines, coffee 3 n 1 (sachet), shampoo (sachet), and toothpaste (sachet). These came from Club members’ donations as well as those from Console Village Homeowner’s Association. Meanwhile the two Rotaract Clubs repacked a total of 265 relief bags. Come August 24, 2013, with the relief bags of the two Rotaract clubs delivered early in the morning at the distribution site and those of RC San Pedro South loaded in a van ready for dispatch anytime, Area 1 Group 1 Rotarians waited at Greenwich Pacita for the team coming from RC Tiaong Hiyas, (Pres Bing Mangubat with 250 relief packs) and the relief goods from RC Bay (Pres. Jerwin Aguba) delivered earlier at Cabuyao warehouse of PP Boy Batallones. The later was picked up by AG Mau Restrivera and loaded in a truck provided by RC Metro San Pedro. RC San Pedro East came with their Rotaractors. Since the relief bags of RC Bay and RC Tiaong Hiyas can be distributed later, RC San Pedro South went ahead to the site and after sometime of waiting at the covered court of Brgy. Cuyab, started the relief distribution. The stubs were prepared earlier by RC San Pedro East and distributed by Jordan Alviar of Gising Kabataan Movement. Evacuees with stubs formed a line and were given first, relief bags from the two Rotaract clubs and a second bag from RC San Pedro South. However, after all their relief bags have been given out, the teams from RC Tiaong Hiyas and the other San Pedro Clubs were not yet in the area, so the Rotarians of RC San Pedro South decided to go home leaving FC Pres. Fe Aquinde to help out in the remaining portion of the project. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Rotary Trivia: What is the minimum amount that can be remitted to TRF? Can one give $5 or $10? Answer from RI South Pacific and Philippine Office in Parramata, Australia: While the target is $100 per Rotarian, it is certainly understood that this is not always possible and for this reason, the Every Rotarian Every Year program was implemented. EREY simply asks that Rotarians develop the habit of giving something each and every year. $100 would be great but it needn’t be that high. You suggested $5 or $10 and that would be fine. The only thing we have to be wary of is that the contribution isn’t so low (for example $2) that the cost of

processing the contribution is greater than the contribution itself.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ TRF Update: With the latest contributions (P27,132, P5,000 and P8729, all last August 28, 2013) with a total of P40,861 equivalent to $950.25 at a exchange rate of P43 per $. Added to our previous total of $1955.80, equals $2,906.05. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF US!!! WE HAVE MET OUR TARGET!

THE BENEFITS OF PEZA TO PHILIPPINE ECONOMY AND ITS ENVIRONMENTS The Philippines Export Zone Authority was first conceptualized during the time of then President Marcos under the previous name EXPORT PROCESSING ZONE AUTHORITY (EPZA). This was the one of the pet project of President Marcos. But in 1995 Republic Act No. 7916, EPZA was changed to PHILIPPINES EXPORT ZONE AUTHORITY (PEZA) by President Ramos. With some Charter amendments and the Rules and Regulations were modified. PEZA is a government agency tasked to promote investment, increase export and employment in the Philippines. EPZA was first under the Office of the President while PEZA is an attached agency of the Department of Trade and Industry. Under EPZA there were only four regular zones, the Bataan Export Processing Zone, Baguio Export Processing Zone, Rosario Cavite Export Processing Zone and the Mactan Export Processing Zone it was controlled and owned wholly by the government while PEZA’s charter, government partnered with the private sector (developer) to establish a special economic zones. Today, there are seven hundred seventy seven (277) Special Economic Zones throughout the Phils.. PEZA accounts for about 80% of Foreign Investment, Exports and Employment in the country. An ordinary person who doesn’t understand how PEZA operates and what benefits it brings when it is tax free. This is how it works, before an obscure place was developed into an economic zone, a barren un-inhabited land is now teeming with people around it with vibrant economic activities. The turo-turo of aling Charing is now a restaurant, the sari-sari store of mang Pepe is now a grocery, the carinderia of aling Choleng is now an airconditioned canteen much more a sleepy town is now a city. Malls, classy restaurants, truckings , junk shops and different kinds of businesses evolved around the city. Why this turn-around of a once quiet municipality into a booming city, it is because people have already purchasing power. Crimes are negligible because people have works. With foreign entity investing in the Phils., through the effort and marketing of PEZA, thousands of companies have put up in different economic zones throughout the country. These generate millions of jobs. IT export is one of the topnoch earner of Phil. Economy. As proof these many towns in CALABAR Zone are now a city and the least is a first class town. Thanks to PEZA.

CLUB NEWS PROJECT NAME: Tulong Mula sa Rotaryo - Bagyong Maring WHEN: August 20, 2013 9AM WHERE: Brgy. Landayan, San Pedro Laguna PARTNER: RI District 3820 - Disaster Relief Operation It is unfortunate that for the second time in just two years, ‘habagat’, with Typhoon Maring once again caused flooding in various areas around Laguna de Bay and affected our town mates. This time however, it is not just those living along the shoreline of the lake that are affected, even those in higher grounds but happened to be in the path of waters released from higher areas of Cavite, Evacuees at Landayan lining up to receive relief goods. were flooded, some of them for the first time. As early as August 19, 2013, flood victims started trekking to evacuation centers such as one in Landayan covered court where RC San Pedro South first conducted its relief giving project last year. Since communication was easily established with Brgy. Landayan, it was chosen to be the recipient of the initial assistance to be launched by RC San Pedro South led by Pres. Fe Aquinde. Coordination with District Governor Danny Ona and relief goods preparation were done in the afternoon of August 19, 2013 and text messages sent out to members for the distribution at 9 am the following day. One hundred families at the Landayan evacuation center received relief goods consisting of rice, coffee, sugar, crackers, milk, sardines, instant noodles, pork and beans and soap. The distribution was facilitated with the help of Brgy. Captain Romy Anaya and his staff as well as DSWD coordinator Dory Beroya. Two San Pedro Police personnel were also around to help in keeping order in the area. Before noon, the distribution was completed, RC San Pedro South Rotarians left the area with that feeling of accomplishment that even in just a small way, they were able to alleviate the suffering of their fellowmen. Joining Pres. Fe Aquinde in the relief goods giving were PPs Yolly Montifar and Resty Ramos, Treas. Bessie Garcia, Rtn. Zeny Vindollo and IPP Rey Bongao. - IPP Rey Bongao
