All Active Rotarians Contributors The Golden Key was adapted in honor of St. Peter, the patron saint of San Pedro, who is believed to be holding the key to heaven. It is also in recognition at the club’s pioneering effort as the first club in San Pedro, to open the portals of Rotary International to female members. RCSPS was the “key” for the active partnership of both genders in working for the achievement of all the Rotary Objectives. The Golden Key accepts comments, suggestion and contributions from all active Rotarians.

RI President - RON D. BURTON

August 2013 Dear fellow Rotarians, Our goal in 2013-14 is to Engage Rotary, Change Lives . All of us know that Rotary has incredible potential to do good work. It's time to recognize how much more we could be doing and start working on new ways to turn that potential into reality. We're going to do this by engaging Rotarians – by getting them involved, by getting them inspired, and by making sure that all Rotarians know just what a gift they have in Rotary. We're going to make sure that the work we do in Rotary is solid, effective, and sustainable. And we're going to make sure that Rotary itself will last – by committing to our goal of 1.3 million Rotarians in our clubs by the year 2015. That goal is a little different from membership goals we've had in the past. The goal isn't just bringing in new members. The goal is growing Rotary. The goal is making Rotary bigger, not just with more members, but with more involved, engaged, motivated members who will be the ones to lead us into our future. Each of us has our own reason for joining Rotary – but I believe we all want to make a difference. We all want to be doing something meaningful. That is absolutely essential for us to remember when we talk about membership. We're not asking just anyone to join Rotary. We're looking to attract busy, successful, motivated people who care. We're asking them to take their valuable time and give it to Rotary. So if they say yes, and they come and join our club, then we'd better be showing them that their time in Rotary is well spent. We have to make sure that every Rotarian, in every club, has a meaningful job – one that makes a real difference to the club and the community. Because when you're doing something meaningful in Rotary, Rotary is meaningful to you. In Rotary, we all have something to give. At every stage of our lives and our careers, Rotary has something for all of us – a way to let us do more, be more, and give more. Rotary gives our lives more meaning, more purpose, and greater satisfaction. And the more we give through Rotary, the more Rotary gives back to us in return.

Ron D. Burton President, Rotary International

THE GOLDEN KEY Vol. XVI—Weekly Bulletin of RCSPS

August is the Membership and Extension Month in Rotary Calendar, the best time for us to SHARE Rotary to our friends, relatives and family. We need to work hard to fulfill our top responsibility in our club, to bring new faces. Invite them and let them feel to be part of Rotary . When I was first invited in this club, I have no intention of joining the club, but just to give time to a very persistent friend, to visit and attend their weekly meeting. If not for him, I would not be able to become a part of this organization and filled up the space in my heart to be of Service to others. You feel happiness every time you see young faces acknowledging the help you have given them. Let us be vigilant in looking and inviting prospective members. Who knows one or two of them will then be new Rotarians of our club.. Let us support and be part of the forthcoming RI Strategic Plan, The Rotary Foundation, Membership, Public Image and Service Projects seminar workshop scheduled on August 17-18, 2013 at Lima Park Hotel to be hosted by RC Calamba. Myself, Pe Alex Melgar and Treas Bessie Garcia have already paid the registration and beat the deadline.. Others may still join us. This is a one time seminar with 5 important Rotary matters in it. It was the first time they offered in our District. We will surely learn more in this seminar as we effectively review our role as Rotarian, as we "Engage Rotary, Change Lives"! Another busy schedule of activity in our District is our attendance in different Club Inductions. Thanks Heaven, members of our club need not be asked to attend this important date in other clubs, their induction of new sets of officers and members. As of to date, our club was represented in the inductions of RC Metro San Pedro - July 20, 2013, RC Mataas na Kahoy July 28, 2013, RC Cabuyao - July 31, 2013, and RC San Pedro - August 6, 2013, 4 clubs in a row. Thank you to all our members for their time to be present in these different occasions.

"The most significant change in a persons life is a change of attitude. Right attitude produce right actions". -unknown-

Editor and TRF Chair’s corner In Philippine politics, both local and national levels, it is not uncommon that a politician’s elective position will later be held by one or more of his children or spouse. And after the maximum three successive terms was adopted, after just one term out of an elective position, a politician will “regain” his former position. We also have numerous cases of several members of a family simultaneously occupying different (same in the case of senators) public offices. We call it political dynasties, and we tolerate it in the sense that we elect them to their positions. Of course, political dynasties have its merits, like continuity of projects, experience sharing, etc. However, it seems there are more disadvantages and there have been moves to ban political dynasties. In Rotary however, the reverse is most welcome, it is even encouraged. It will be to the advantage of Rotary in general and a club in particular if family members can all be active in practicing the motto, “Service above self”, if more and more family members become Rotarians in the same or even different clubs. Last week, Luz and I were invited to the 20 th Anniversary celebration and 21st Induction and turn-over ceremonies of RC Cabuyao at Acacia Hotel Manila. I was pleasantly surprised to know that the incoming Club President (for RY 2013-2014) is the son of the club’s Charter President who is still very much active in the club! It is like passing the torch from one generation to the next generation. And the incoming President is so youthful looking that during the turn-over ceremonies, with the outgoing President already in his senior years, a guest commented they look more like grandfather and grandson. In real life, the incoming president is godchild of the outgoing one. Thus, the incoming one can be assured of full support of the outgoing president. In his acceptance speech, he said the club for him is like a big family with most of the members considered his uncles (it is an all male club). And to complete the picture, another family member is also a member of the Club, a future Club President. Furthermore, the club succeeded in gaining young members such that eleven (11) out of their forty (40) members are below forty years in age. That assures continuity of the Club for at least another twenty years. Their guest speaker is a past president of a Makati Rotary club whose father and grandfather were also past Rotary club presidents. The strength of a Club can also be gauged from the number of their active past presidents. In the case of RC Cabuyao, in all they have 14 presidents (including our current Deputy Jun Mendoza Jr.) parading at the start of their anniversary celebrations. Anybody in our family following our footsteps in RC San Pedro South? Welcome to the Club! ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Rotary Trivia: What is the difference between EREY member and Sustaining member? Ravindran is choice for 2015-16 RI president K.R. “Ravi” Ravindran, a member of the Rotary Club of Colombo, Western Province, Sri Lanka, has been selected by the Nominating Committee for President of RI in 2015-16. Ravindran will become the president-nominee on 1 October if there are no challenging candidates. Ravindran said his top priority for Rotary will be to increase membership, which he called the bedrock of any organization. “The emphasis on membership has to continue with focus on the younger generation,” Ravindran said. “Additionally, we must seek to attract the just retired and experienced people into Rotary.” Creating regional membership plans and realizing that “one size does not fit all” has been a move in the right direction, he said. “Albert Einstein defined insanity as ‘doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.’ In many ways this has been the "Ravi" Ravindran is the story of Rotary’s poor membership advance,” he said. “Thankfully, our K.R. selection of the Nominating approach this time has been studied and altered. We have created 22 Committee for President of different membership regions so that each region would develop and Rotary International in 2015-16. execute a plan that would suit that particular region.” Ravindran said it’s important for Rotarians to share their stories, especially through social media, so others can see the impact Rotary has had in their lives. He said it’s also important for the organization to speak with a consistent voice. “Our identity must remain simple and be based on our core values. It must be clear and straightforward to both our internal and external audience.” Ravindran holds a degree in commerce and is founder and CEO of Printcare PLC, a publicly listed company and global leader in the tea packaging industry. He also serves on the board of several other companies and charitable trusts. He is the founding president of the Sri Lanka Anti Narcotics Association, the largest antinarcotics organization in Sri Lanka. As his country’s PolioPlus chair, Ravindran headed a task force with members from the government, UNICEF, and Rotary and worked closely with UNICEF to negotiate a cease-fire with northern militants during National Immunization Days. A Rotarian since 1974, Ravindran has served Rotary as a director and treasurer of RI and as a trustee of The Rotary Foundation. He has also served as an International Assembly group discussion leader, district governor, Council on Legislation representative, and zone institute chair. He chaired the Schools Reawakening project, sponsored by Rotary clubs and districts in Sri Lanka, which rebuilt 25 tsunami-devastated schools, benefiting 15,000 children. Ravindran has been awarded The Rotary Foundation’s Citation for Meritorious Service and Distinguished Service Award and the Service Award for a Polio-Free World. He and his wife, Vanathy, have two children, and are level 4 Major Donors to the Foundation. The Nominating Committee members are Eric E. Lacoste Adamson, USA (chair); John T. Blount, USA; Robert K. Crabtree, New Zealand; Gerson Gonçalves, Brazil; Frederick W. Hahn Jr., USA; Lynn A.
