EDITORIAL BOARD The Rotary Club of San Pedro South Publisher Reynaldo “Rey” F. Bongao Editor-In-Chief Leofelia “Fe” S. Aquinde President Alex “Bebot” Melgar Secretary Prudence Malayas Research/Layout

All Active Rotarians Contributors The Golden Key was adapted in honor of St. Peter, the patron saint of San Pedro, who is believed to be holding the key to heaven. It is also in recognition at the club’s pioneering effort as the first club in San Pedro, to open the portals of Rotary International to female members. RCSPS was the “key” for the active partnership of both genders in working for the achievement of all the Rotary Objectives. The Golden Key accepts comments, suggestion and contributions from all active Rotarians. RI President - RON D. BURTON

October 2013 Dear fellow Rotarians, In Rotary, October is the month we set aside to remind ourselves of our second Avenue of Service: vocational service. While some Rotarians call this the "forgotten" area of service, I would disagree: In fact, vocational service is the avenue through which we serve so often, we don't always recognize it as service. Vocational service has its roots in the second object of Rotary, which encourages all Rotarians to hold high ethical standards in our business affairs and our professions, to recognize all useful occupations as worthy of respect, and to dignify work as an opportunity to serve society. In short, the idea of vocational service is that our jobs, in themselves, are a way of serving society. Whether we are serving customers, teaching students, or treating patients, whether we're involved in commerce, research, the media, or any one of countless other fields – we take pride in doing our work with competence and integrity. Every occupation fills a need, and by doing our work well, we are contributing to our communities and our society. The role of vocational service in the club is important, even if it isn't always prominent. By maintaining high standards individually, we earn a reputation that we share collectively. By valuing all occupations equally and by maintaining a classification system in our clubs, we ensure that our clubs reflect our communities – and can serve them well. A Rotary club of all lawyers wouldn't be capable of nearly as much as one that also had teachers, engineers, business owners, and dentists; in Rotary, our diversity is our strength. That diversity is an advantage not only to our service but to our members: It gives us all a valuable way to find the connections and opportunities that help us in our own careers. That aspect of membership is as old as Rotary. Paul Harris himself wrote often of the business advantages of Rotary membership, believing, as I do, that being a Rotarian means a person holds a certain set of values that will make him or her a good person to do business with. Today, with the world more connected than ever, Rotary membership is an honor that we should be proud to share. Ron D. Burton President, Rotary International

My Dear Fellow Rotarians, During our Multi District PETS held on February 15-16, 2013 at Waterfront Hotel, Cebu City, DG Danny Ona discussed the District Thrusts to the Incoming Presidents for Rotary year 2013-2014. As an incoming President, with limited budget, we came out with the souvenir program to raise fund and lead our members to deliver these thrusts. We started discussing about the program on our meetings, during the President's Elect time and club assemblies. Then a sample letter was printed on May 4, 2013 bulletin. The solicitation letter was then delivered to our prospective partners. Members were encouraged to participate in the program by bringing in new partners. As an incentive, for referring a partner, 50% of the solicited amount will be donated in the TRF under their name. The RC San Pedro South Souvenir Program is already in its final stage. We are just waiting for some final revisions requested by our partners. Hopefully the final copy will be released this week. The proceeds of our Souvenir Program helped fund our projects such as our target goal for "The Rotary Foundation (TRF)", Governor's Visit and the District Kick-Off ProjectsBrigada Eskwela. We have raised a total of P131,125.00 from this program. During the Governor's Visit, last August 31, 2013, we reenacted the handing over of U$3,000.00 check to DG Danny Ona, as our club members contribution to the TRF. I was very thankful with the product of "labor of love", as I call it. This was the time I saw my family The RCSPS Souvenir Program Front members gathered in one place in our house working Page!!! day and night to finish the souvenir program.. The patience of Rtn Prudence in accepting requests from our members for the changes of their submitted article and enhancements of their pictures and so on.... The size of advertisement and cost did not matter, if it is full or 1/16 page, as long as you participated in this noble project, I say, I salute you Rotarians! Thank you so much to all our members that gave their time and effort in the success of our club's souvenir program as we Engage Rotary, Change Lives. 17th Turn Over & 18th Installation of

Editor and TRF Chair’s corner Our District Governor has sent notice for submission of nomination for DG Nominee for RY 2016-2017. As voted upon in the last DISCON, our method of selection will be through Ballot by Mail. How is this done, how does it differ from the usual NOMCOM method? Following is a summary of the steps in Ballot by Mail; -the District Governor forms a three member Balloting Committee -DG mails to all Club secretaries call for nominations for Governor -nominations signed by President and Club Secretary are sent to the DG, nominee must be a Club member -DG prepares a ballot with an alphabetical listing of the nominees to all Clubs. The ballots must be signed by all members of the Balloting Committee -completed ballots in sealed envelopes must be returned to the DG by a date set by the DG. - DG shall determine and announce the place, date, and time for counting of ballots - validation of ballots shall be undertaken separately from the counting of the ballots. - all sealed envelopes containing the ballots from each club shall be opened in the presence of the candidates or their representatives - the committee shall make other arrangements to safeguard the secrecy of the ballots as necessary. -the candidate receiving a majority of the votes cast shall be declared governor-nominee - the balloting committee shall promptly report the results of the ballot to the governor as soon as a candidate receives a majority vote - the governor shall promptly notify the candidates of the results of the ballot - such ballots shall be open to inspection by a representative of any club for a period of 15 days after notification of the candidates. - the chairman of the balloting committee shall destroy such ballots following the 15-day period. - DG shall certify the name of the governor-nominee to the RI general secretary within ten days after a candidate has been declared the nominee. Above information was taken from the RI By Laws, Article 13.030 to 13.050 ***********************************************************

Rotary Trivia on Governor’s allowance from RI

How much allowance does a Governor receive from RI? Answer from RI Office Parramatta; The funds provided by Rotary to governors towards the personal expenses that they incur in being governor, are one of the largest single items on the RI budget. Approximately US$10.00 of semi-annual dues goes towards meeting these costs. In recent years changes have occurred that allow governors to claim for promotional materials for their conference, and also trophies, gifts and awards.

Dear Esteemed Fellow Rotarians of D-3820, Greetings of joy and enthusiasm in the name of Rotary. Our Discon is still over five months to go, but early preparations is deemed necessary. To be held at the Grand Ballroom of Taal Vista Hotel in Tagaytay on March 28-29, 2014, this very important affair aims to satisfy the expectation of every First Class Rotarian in a DISCON via best programs, knowledgeable and excellent Rotarian and non-Rotarian speakers, innovative presentations, and accommodations/entertainments - rolled into one very high qualify affair. While the venue can accommodate over 1, 000 participants, we expect quantifiable and qualitative participations of Rotarians, greater numbers of attendees thus greater impact. In order to have smooth start, we expect the usual punctuality of Rotarians, one way of which to carry this out is through "no onsite registration". As the case may be, its registration will be very higher that pre-registration. For this purpose, the reduced pre-registration fee will be at Three Thousand Nine Hundred Pesos (P 3,900.00) per participant, while for those that may catch-up in attendance via on-site will be charged with Four Thousand Five Hundred Pesos (P 4,500.00) plus the difficulties that may be incurred during registration. Remember please that by any means, the DISCON program will start exactly 1:20 in the afternoon (13:20hrs).

The host club, Rotary Club of Metro Lipa will immediately start accepting pre-registration. Payment can be deposited at the bank accounts indicated hereunder. Bank: BDO Lipa Highway Account Name: Rotary Club of Metro Lipa BDO Account No. 0018-8800-9522 While District Governor Danny Ona can not find the exact words to describe how inspired, very much satisfied, and greatly moved he felt during various First Class Governor's Visit in the clubs, we anticipate your usual and continuing kind and exemplary participation on this affair. Once again, thank you all very very much and best regards.

Engagingly yours in Rotary Service, PDG Teotimo "Onye" L. Reyes Jr. DISCON 2014 Chairman Noted by: FCDG Danilo "Danny" C. Ona District Governor 2013-14: District 3820
