It is also in recognition at the club’s pioneering effort as the first club in San Pedro, to open the portals of Rotary International to female members. July 2012 Dear fellow Rotarians, I am part of the first generation to grow up in Japan after a terrible war. I think it is natural that my countrymen now place a great priority on peace. We saw where militarism brought our country, and we also saw the great economic growth that came when our nation made the choice to embrace peace. This was the decision that allowed Japan to grow and thrive. It allowed generations of children to grow up in safety, to become educated, to improve their lives. It fundamentally changed the Japanese attitude toward other countries and cultures. It caused us to open our minds, to become more tolerant, to seek greater understanding. And it allowed us to redirect our energies toward positive goals. In Japan, it is traditional to prioritize the needs of the society over the needs of the individual. This has always been part of our culture. In the weeks and months following the great earthquake and disaster of March 2011, this was what helped us to survive and rebuild. This is a lesson that I think the whole world can learn from, in a positive way. When we see the needs of others as more important than our own needs – when we focus on a shared goal that is for the good of all – this changes everything. It changes how we relate to the world. It changes our priorities. And it changes how we understand the idea of peace. In the 2012-13 Rotary year, peace will be our focus and our goal, and I will ask all Rotarians to actively work for Peace Through Service. A belief in the power of service lies at the very heart of Rotary. By making service our priority, we put the needs of others above our own. We empathize more deeply with the difficulties of other people; we become more generous with our time and resources, and more open to new ways of thinking. Instead of trying to change others, we recognize that everyone and everything has something to teach us. Through service, we become more tolerant of our differences and more grateful for the people in our lives. Our sense of gratitude drives us to understand others better and to see the good in everyone. Through better understanding, we learn to respect others. With mutual respect, we live with others in peace. And so I ask you all to put Peace Through Service at the forefront of your Rotary work this year, and to commit to a Rotary goal of a more peaceful world. From My Point of View To say that the first week of July was a busy week is an understatement. For me, it was a hectic, tension filled, pressure packed week. It is the first week of the new Rotary year. The first Friday, July 6, 2012 should have been our Club’s first meeting with me presiding as President. As fate would have it, the District Governor’s RI mandated visit to our Club was scheduled that Friday and in spite of all the preparations made weeks before the event, some minor last minute developments made me feel apprehensive. It may have been a blessing that the arrival of DG Dennis was delayed by an hour, giving me extra breathing space. Call me , “mababaw ang kaligayahan”, but I was more than satisfied with how our Club handled the day’s event. It helped that it started with a mass, then we had breakfast. We met Gov. Dennis at SLEX/Southwoods and with a motorized escort provided by the local government (thanks to PPs Danny and Ver), proceeded to what for me is a highlight of our preparations, the public image/waiting shed project. With Gov. Dennis and Punong Brgy. Allan Mark Villena doing the honors, they cut the ribbon and unveiled the Rotary materials posted in the waiting shed so the public may know what Rotary Club of San Pedro South has been doing. That was a project that took months of planning, coordination, fabrication, construction and finally the posting of those Rotary materials. Thanks a lot to those who helped in completing the sponsors listing, Dan, PE Fe, IPP Yolly, PN Bebot, Treas. Shirley, and PP Cely. For being in charge of the ribbon cutting and unveiling materials, kudos to P.O. Johnny and Ading. Then, the Gov’s visit proper went on smoothly, thanks to the Plan and Program presentors (PN Bebot, AG Resty, DGA Chief Cely, PP Norvic and PE Fe) and emcees PDG Rose Celis. After IPP Yolly, Sec Fe, Treas. Shirley and P.O. Johhny were inducted as Club officers; IPP Yolly in turn, inducted the new members, Clemence (first to arrive at the venue), Rose V., Joy and Lourdes. In his response, Gov. Dennis, requested the members to help the TRF, giving individual target contribution. A sumptuous lunch followed; special mention for Lita who provided the grapes, kiwis and oranges. To all the members of RCSPS, specially the Gov’s Visit Chairperson, IPP Yolly (and my family and in-laws), thanks for your support to our Club, keep it up!

THE ROTARY FOUNDATION, enables Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education and the alleviation of poverty. EVERY ROTARIAN, EVERY YEAR (EREY), anyone who contributes US$100 or more per year to the Annual Fund is automatically recognized as a Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member. Sustaining members are critical to the Foundation of every club member contributed US$100 every year. Rotary could nearly double the efforts to help needy people worldwide and support the continued growth its progress. PAUL HARRIS FELLOW, donors of US$1,000.00 or more to the Annual Fund, Polio Plus, or an approved foundation grant, or people who have that amount contributed in their name, can be recognized as Paul Harris Fellow. During the Governor’s Visit last July 6, 2012, District Governor Dennis Sunio delivered his governor's message. Aside from expressing his warmest thanks and appreciation for what we had prepared for his visit, he appealed that we have to support The Rotary Foundation.. CLUB INFO RCSPS Distribution of School Kits/ Supplies at 3 Daycare Centers A very successful governor's visit was held last July 6, 2012, 7:00AM-12:00 noon at Stonecrest Clubhouse, Stonecrest, San Pedro, Laguna. It did not stop with the visit itself. After the visit our Pres. Rey, who always think about the Day care children of Mangahan, Maligaya 6 and 7, arranged for the distribution of school kits/supplies to the respective teachers, Teacher Luisa Sanidad and Teacher Minda Atanoso. These kits, which came in pink, yellow, orange, green and blue, contains pad paper, notebook, pencil, crayons, eraser, pencil sharpener and raincoats. The Rotarians didn't let the weather dampen their charitable spirits; in fact they gamely pushed through with the project. There was no happier face on that day compared to the students of these schools receiving their respective school kits. The children and the Rotarians happily joined in a song and dance number. Big thanks to Teacher Joy, IPP Yolly, Rtn Lourdes who lead in the demonstration of this number. The following is the complete list of items given to the daycare children: Mangahan Daycare - 36 pcs of school kits/supplies; Maligaya 6 - 30 pcs school kits/supplies, 4 sets Kindergarten Writing & Reading Made Fun & Easy, and 2 sets Nursery Writing & Reading Made Fun & Easy; Maligaya 7 - 30 pcs school kits/supplies, 3 sets Kindergarten Writing & Reading Made Fun & Easy, and 2 sets Nursery Writing and Reading Made Fun and Easy Additional books were given to Maligaya 6 and 7 for their additional enrollees. At the end of the day, the Rotarians left the DayCare with light spirits despite of the nasty weather. Kudos to Pres Rey, IPP Yolly, Treas Shirley, Rtns Bessie, Clemence, Lourdes, Joy, Emie and yours truly who were present in this activity. Finally, I'd like to end by quoting Pres. New Email Scams Target Rotarians Several Rotarians have recently reported receiving a fraudulent email sent out in the name of a senior Rotary leader, a trustee of The Rotary Foundation, seeking money. The email scam claims that the individual is stuck at an airport with lost luggage and needs the cash to get home. Please be aware this email is a scam. Other recent scams include:
An email scam with the subject line "Award Winning Notification Final" has targeted Rotarians claiming that they are one of 21 winners of a promotional program held on 1 January 2012 by the Rotary Foundation. The fake promotion says winners will receive US$1 million cash payment. The email is signed by "Mr. Jerry Blake, The Promotion Manager, Rotary Foundation Int (UK), London, United Kingdom."
An email scam targeting Rotarians and Rotaractors claims the recipient has won hundreds of thousands of euros through an international promotional program conducted by the "EuroMillones Lottery". Attached to the e-mail is a PDF letter signed by "Luis Alberto, Vice President" with a photo of Past RI President Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar.
An email scam with the subject line "Dear Award Beneficiary!!!" has targeted Rotarians claiming the recipient has won US$500,000 and two HP laptops from RI. The email asks for contact information and is signed by "Mrs. Sarah Olic, Programme Co-ordinator, Rotary International".
RI encourages Rotarians and Rotary clubs to avoid becoming victims of such scams by deleting any email that appears suspicious.

Dear Peacebuilder Presidents and Rotarians, As you may have gleaned from Zone 7A RRFC PDG Bobby Viray's newsletter dated June 28, 2012 we are again the largest Philippine Rotary District in terms of membership at 2605. This is most evidently not because we gained so much but the other districts lost so much. This 2605 number is going to be our baseline number which in turn will change our annual membership targets to the following: 2735,2870, and 3015. For goals to be satisfying and gratifying we will still aim to hit the magic number of 3000 members at the end of RY 2013-14 as per original guidance from DG Dennis, DGE Danny, and DGN Jojo. Dear friends bear in mind that as our economy grows other districts based in metropolitan areas will grow faster than largely municipal ones like us. Reaching the top is easier than remaining on top, but this is what we need to do and keep our focus on. Let's do it! A Soggy Lobster Bake Shines with Rotary Spirit On his first day as RI President, Sakuji Tanaka joined Rotarians in my hometown of Boothbay Harbor, Maine, taking part in a Changeover ceremony for six district governors and 46 club presidents. Rotarians came from Quebec, New York, New Jersey, and all over New England – some making a 10-hour drive — in order to shake hands with Tanaka-san, hear him speak, and be formally inducted by him into their new Rotary offices. It was a remarkable honor for all. The centerpiece of the Changeover was a lobster bake. Marty Peak Helman with RI President President Tanaka has publicly stated he is most comfortable in Sakuji Tanaka during the Changeover suit and tie. But I knew I couldn’t live with myself if we ended ceremony in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, up squirting lobster juice on his tie. So we created tie-dyed 1 July. Photo by Ann Lee Hussey T-shirts in his colors, promoting “Peace Through Service.” We made it a fun thing to wear, which he did, complete with presidential pin! Local Rotarians asked the Governor of Maine to pass a resolution declaring 1 July “Rotary – Peace Through Service” day in the state of Maine. Our local elementary school music director assembled a choir of young talent to honor our guests from Japan and Canada with an international repertoire. And for a gift for President Tanaka, the River Valley-Rumford Rotary Club arranged for a local craftsman to make a plaque from a Paul Harris Tree. (Paul Harris planted the tree in 1935, but it came down a few years ago. The craftsman has made several plaques with its wood since.) District 7780 voted to transfer $5,000 in District Designated Funds (DDF) to the Rotary Peace Centers program in honor of the occasion. Everything was going splendid – until nature intervened. Within fifteen minutes, the skies went from sunny to downpour, and the well-crafted event turned into a pell-mell rush indoors. As we scurried to get everything inside, an amazing thing happened. The assembled Rotarians realized that what was important was not the carefully planned arrangements, but rather the Rotary spirit. What we do – build wells, give children a chance to go to school, provide lunch for the elderly, treat and prevent disease – these are the things that really matter. We rallied, and had a remarkable, memorable event. President Tanaka’s Changeover day will be one both he and all of us honored to be in attendance will not soon forget.
