The Golden Key was adapted in honor of St. Peter, the patron saint of San Pedro, who is believed to be holding the key to heaven. It is also in recognition at the club’s pioneering effort as the first club in San Pedro, to open the portals of Rotary International to female members. RCSPS was the “key” for the active partnership of both genders in working for the achievement of all the Rotary Objectives. The Golden Key accepts comments, suggestion and contributions from all active Rotarians. RI PRESIDENT - SAKUJI TANAKA

July 2012 Dear fellow Rotarians, I am part of the first genera on to grow up in Japan a er a terrible war. I think it is natural that my countrymen now place a great priority on peace. We saw where militarism brought our country, and we also saw the great economic growth that came when our na on made the choice to embrace peace. This was the decision that allowed Japan to grow and thrive. It allowed genera ons of children to grow up in safety, to become educated, to improve their lives. It fundamentally changed the Japanese a tude toward other countries and cultures. It caused us to open our minds, to become more tolerant, to seek greater understanding. And it allowed us to redirect our energies toward posi ve goals. In Japan, it is tradi onal to priori ze the needs of the society over the needs of the individual. This has always been part of our culture. In the weeks and months following the great earthquake and disaster of March 2011, this was what helped us to survive and rebuild. This is a lesson that I think the whole world can learn from, in a posi ve way. When we see the needs of others as more important than our own needs – when we focus on a shared goal that is for the good of all – this changes everything. It changes how we relate to the world. It changes our priori es. And it changes how we understand the idea of peace. In the 2012‐13 Rotary year, peace will be our focus and our goal, and I will ask all Rotarians to ac vely work for Peace Through Service. A belief in the power of service lies at the very heart of Rotary. By making service our priority, we put the needs of others above our own. We empathize more deeply with the difficul es of other people; we become more generous with our me and resources, and more open to new ways of thinking. Instead of trying to change others, we recognize that everyone and everything has something to teach us. Through service, we become more tolerant of our differences and more grateful for the people in our lives. Our sense of gratitude drives us to understand others better and to see the good in everyone. Through better understanding, we learn to respect others. With mutual respect, we live with others in peace. And so I ask you all to put Peace Through Service at the forefront of your Rotary work this year, and to commit to a Rotary goal of a more peaceful world. SAKUJI TANAKA President, Rotary International

DISTRICT GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL District 3820 Office of the District Governor Pagsanjan, Laguna July 4, 2012 Fellow Rotarians and comrades in peace, Greetings of peace and prosperity!!! We just barely started our year of Service and at the outset, I am congratulating Peacebuilder President_Rey F. Bongao and the new set of club of icers of the Rotary Club of San Pedro South, who will soon be inducted formally into of ice. I also would like to extend my warmest felicitation and congratulations to IPP Yolly Montifar for a year excellently performed. The task of the new leaders can be very dif icult, oftentimes, requiring attention to the minutest detail, but they have a year to prove their mettle for service and yes, peace through service. Without doubt, like soaring eagles they will achieve modest gains or even surpass their goals because behind each and every leader are Rotarians who have proven time and again their penchant for doing good in this world. But mind you, each little act of service will be done with a touch of smile, and a lavour of love and kindness, and an incessant desire for more service. This is the Rotary Club of San Pedro South today, building PEACE THROUGH SERVICE, knowing no physical boundaries, no hindrance as to color, creed or gender. This was also the vision of our Founder, Paul Harris, 107 years ago. The story of RC San Pedro South will not end here but will be woven in the fabric of Rotary history for another century. As your District Governor, I humbly enjoin each and every member of this venerable club to hold on to each other’s hands with the irm belief and resolve that we shall KEEP MARCHING ON AND HOLD ON TO EVERY OPPORTUNITY FOR SERVICE, without doubt, nor fear, without reservation nor purpose of evasion. Yours in Rotary’s Service,

DENNIS B. SUNIO DISTRICT GOVERNOR RY 2012-2013

From My Point of View July 1 of every year is a Rotarian’s New Year, the start of a new Rotary year. As we welcome the new Rotary year, 2012‐2013, in behalf of the Rotary Club of San Pedro South, I welcome Peace Builder District Governor Dennis Sunio, Lady Angie and party. Just like all Rotary clubs, we have been preparing in the past several months for the challenges of the coming Rotary year guided by the thrusts and guidelines of Rotary Interna onal and District 3820. We hope, our prepara ons are paying off. Thus this morning, we had the ribbon cu ng and inaugura on of a wai ng shed built to withstand the test of me designed to last for many years to come. But more than a wai ng shed, it is meant to be a public image project of Rotary in general and Rotary Club of San Pedro South in par cular. In it, we are providing the general public the answer to the ques on, “What is Rotary”? To a layman, this ques on is best answered not by words but by ac on pictures of what our club has been doing. So in the le hand side of the wai ng shed are 36 pictures with cap ons, examples of the service projects completed by RCSPS in the past. In the middle part, along with two (2) Rotary Interna onal Humanity in Mo on ads, is an invita on for prospec ve members to join Rotary Club of San Pedro South. And in the right side is a modest a empt to at least partly address a common problem of Rotary clubs, funding for their projects. It will help cover the expenses for the wai ng shed and hopefully other projects. For only the second me, I am using today a vintage Rotary bell and gavel. If it were a person, it will be a Senior ci zen 2 years from now. I am only the 17th President of this Club , but I am sure that just like this bell, RCSPS will be around for a long, long me serving our publics while our members proudly say, ” I am a member of Rotary Club of San Pedro South!!!”. ROTARY A worldwide network of inspired individuals who translate their passions into relevant social causes to change lives into communities.

RI President: Through Service, We Can Bring Peace It’s a great honor to serve as your 2012‐13 RI president and represent you in Rotary. Since joining this organization in 1975, it has changed my life and given me more than I ever anticipated. I look forward to sharing some of that with you. Through Rotary, I learned the purpose of my life wasn’t to earn more, but to help others. Through our service, we learn that the problems that may seem large to us are really very small. I also learned that through Rotary, we could build peace. As part of the irst generation to grow up in Japan after World War II, I understand the importance of peace and its connection to our well‐being. Peace can mean many things for many people, but however we understand peace, Rotary can help us achieve it. Rotary helps us meet the basic needs of health care, sanitation, food, and education. These can bring peace. In addition, we need peace as well for vaccinators to go into countries such as Afghanistan to prevent children from getting polio. It is through our work as Rotarians that we help to build the foundation for a more peaceful world. Through service, we can bring peace. This is why our 2012‐12 Rotary theme is Peace Through Service. During my year as your president, I look forward to hearing from you on LinkedIn and when I post on the blog. I also hope to see you at one of my three Rotary Global Peace Forums. RI NEWS

My Meeting With Archbishop Desmond Tutu By Ramesh Ferris, polio survivor and member of the Rotary Club of Whitehorse‐Rendezvous, Yukon, Cana‐ da I had the honor recently of mee ng with Archbishop Desmond Tutu in his home in Cape Town, South Africa, where I had a chance to talk to him about polio eradi‐ ca on. The archbishop has been a wonderful supporter of Rotary’s efforts to rid the world of this paralyzing, horrific disease, as a par cipant in the “This Close” public awareness campaign. He was also a speaker at the World Peace Symposium in Birmingham during the 2009 RI Conven on. The archbishop and I have something in common: we both survived polio. I was stricken with polio at the age of six months in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India. With no means of access to rehabilita on, my mother placed me in a Ramesh Ferris, left, and Archbishop Desmond Canadian‐founded orphanage. A er my adop on by a Tutu. Photo courtesy of Ramesh Ferris Canadian family, I underwent a series of surgeries and physical rehabilita on and learned to walk with crutch‐ es and braces for the first me between the age of 3‐4. Polio affected my lungs, and I contract‐ ed pneumonia nine mes before my 11th birthday. A er a visit to India in 2002, I decided to found Cycle to Walk Canada, a charity focused on polio eradica on, educa on, and rehabilita on. In 2008, I hand‐cycled 4,400 miles (7140kms) across Canada, par cipa ng in hundreds of media interviews along the way and making presenta ons in over 200 schools, Rotary clubs, churches, and various levels of government. The campaign raised thousands of dollars, some of which went toward Rotary’s polio eradica on efforts. Since then, I have con nued to keep up my efforts to build awareness for polio eradica on by mee ng with government leaders and statesmen whenever the opportunity arises. It was amazing to visit the archbishop and be able to share part of my personal journey with him. We need to keep spreading the word, and le ng our governments know just how important it is to end polio once and for all. We are truly “This Close,” but we need to finish the job. We cannot become complacent in our fight against polio. The World Health Organiza on es mates that 10 million children would be paralyzed over the next 40 years if we don’t con nue our fight!

8 WAYS TO SAVE YOUR HEART: 1. GET AT LEAST 7 HOURS OF SLEEP. That's per night, not week. And men ‐ the needier breed ‐ require 8. Ge ng by on less can cause metabolic changes that increase your risk for obesity and diabetes. And one recent study from the University of Chicago found that the fewer hours of sleep that adults get each night, the more likely they are to have calcium deposit in their arteries. 2. KNOW YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE. What's the fastest way to age an artery? Subject it to high blood pressure, which will harden it like a garden hose that's been le out in the sun. A range of 120/80 to 130/85 mmHg is considered below the hypertension point, but it's not the ideal. In fact, reducing your blood pressure from 130/85 to 115/76 can make your body up to ten years younger. There's no data to show that using drugs to lower blood pressure offers the full youth effect. So for now, you guessed it: Exercise, lose weight, reduce stress. The good news is the benefits from physical ac vity are just about instantaneous. 3. AVOID SECONDHAND SMOKE. An hour of passive smoke can cause the same amount of aging as having two to four cigare es 4. WALK 30 MINUTES EVERY DAY. A Harvard study suggests that for every hour you exercise during your life, your longevity increases by two hours. It's important to get your heart pumping every day ‐‐ moving regularly is the key to exercise's an ‐aging effect. 5. EAT FISH THREE TIMES A WEEK. It may not be just the omega‐3 in the oil that keep the heart and arteries humming along; a number of animal studies have also indicated that a protein in fish provides a separate boost to cardiovascular health. Eat a variety of low mercury fish (such as wild salmon, ca ish,or lapia. And if you're not nuts about seafood, an ounce of walnuts (7 walnuts or 14 halves) a day will give you a good dose of omega‐3. 6. TAKE HALF AN ASPIRIN DAILY. Yes, those big studies came out a few years ago saying low‐dose aspirin does pre y much zilch to prevent heart a acks and cancer in women, but the evidence is strong for aspirin's reducing the risk of stroke. If you're 40, I recommend half a 325mg. tablet (or two baby aspirins), with half a glass of warm water both before and a er you swallow so that you're less likely to irritate your stomach. 7. LIVE WITHIN YOUR MEANS. Feeling out of control financially can affect your sleep (see number one) but also your arterial health due to chronic stress. and a bankruptcy can put miles on your body's odometer. 8. FLOSS AND BRUSH. Any chronic infec on (including gingivi s) s mulates your body to protect against bleeding with an increase in clo ng ‐ a recipe for heart a ack.

OUR PRAYER O ever loving and eternal God We thank you for this opportunity you have given us to serve the least of our brethren Let your spirit be in our minds to guide our thoughts towards the truth Upon our lips to preserve us from Speaking ill of others In our hearts to foster love and serve our fellowmen above ourselves, as we strive for Peace Through Service.

AMEN‌
