CETTE SÉRIE... À la frontière de l'Ethiopie et du Kenya, les habitants d'un village sur la crête d'un vieux volcan vivent de la collecte du sel qu'ils vont chercher dans le profond cratère. Sans aide mécanique, les hommes plongent nus dans une eau si saturée en sel que quelques minutes à l'intérieur ont vite fait de transformer leurs corps noirs en statues d'albâtre animées.

La boue collectée, une fois séchée au soleil se transformera en cristaux de sel propres à la consommation à la commercialisation, et à leur subsistance.

Très éclectiques. Je trouve notamment dans la littérature et le cinéma documentaire, des clefs pour avancer dans mon parcours pho-

tographique. Je suis bien sûr marqué par le travail de grands photojournalistes. Pour n'en citer que deux : James Nachtwey pour sa capacité à durer dans la perfection et s'engager comme "reporter de paix", et Alex Webb pour sa gestion jamais égalée des lumières et des couleurs.

TES projets ?

A l'issue de mon reportage en Ethiopie j'ai publié un livre sur l'exode des dernières communautés de Juifs de ce pays. Il est disponible à l'adresse suivante : www.betaisrael.net. Je rentre tout juste de Birmanie ou j'ai mené un projet très personnel de "carnet d'errances", que je prévois de diffuser dans les prochaines semaines.

THIS SERIES...

These people live by an old volcano between Ethiopia and Kenya and earn their living by collecting salt from its crater. They dive naked without any mechanical help and the water is so saturated with salt that their black bodies turn into alabaster statues in a blink. The collected mud turns into salt crystals ready for consumption, commercialization and subsistence once dried in the sun.

YOUR SOURCES OF INSPIRATION ?

Very eclectic. Literature and documentaries are the keys of my photographic career. I was marked by photojournalism. Two examples:

James Nachtwey for his ablity to last in perfection and be a « peace reporter », and Alex Webb for his great control of lights and colors.

YOU PROJECTS ?

When I got back from Ethiopia I published a book about the exodus of the last Jewish communities of Ethiopia. It is available at: www.betaisrael.net. I just got back from Burma where I carried a very personal project, a « wandering book » I am to distribute in the weeks to come.

INTERVIEW TON UNIVERS...

Après avoir longtemps baigné dans l'univers de la BD, je me suis orienté il y a quelques années vers un type de dessin plus classique et me suis penché sur le monde de l'illustration, puis de la gravure. Mes premières œuvres sérieuses étaient très colorées : j'utilisais majoritairement le pastel gras, que je grattais à l'aide d'un couteau de peinture. Puis j'ai découvert la plume et l'encre de Chine, et je ne les ai plus lâchées. Je dessine donc désormais exclusivement en noir et blanc, sauf rares exceptions.

TES SOURCES D'INSPIRATION ?

Mes sujets de "l'époque pastels" étaient surtout imaginaires, fantastiques (la musique noire, l'Afrique fantasmée, le Vaudou)...

Mes centres d'intérêt ont ensuite évolué vers des thèmes plus ancrés dans la réalité : l'histoire des luttes sociales, les migrations, l'anarchisme, l'Europe de l'Est... Cette série de "Maxwell Street" venait conclure un cycle, et cela m'a permis de retrouver mon premier amour : le blues et la culture noire-américaine.

TES projets ?

Je travaille actuellement sur une série de dessins qui ont pour sujet le voyage d'un jeune garçon dans l'Espagne de la Guerre Civile (1936), jusque dans la France de la Résistance (1939).

YOUR UNIVERSE...

After a long time immersed in the world of comics books, I turned a few years ago to a more conventional type of drawing and on the world of illustration and engraving.

My first serious works were colorful: I used mostly the pastel, witch I scratched with a painting knife.Then I discovered the technic of the pen and Chinese ink, and since then, i've been addicted. For now, I exclusively draw in black and white, with few exceptions.

YOUR SOURCES OF INSPIRATION ?

My subjects of "the time pastels" were mostly imaginary, fantastic (black music,

African fantasy, Voodoo)... My interests then evolved into themes more grounded in reality: the history of social struggles, migrations, anarchism, Eastern Europe... This series "Maxwell Street" came as a conclusion of a cycle, and it allowed me to find my first love: the blues and American black culture.

YOU PROJECTS ?

I am currently working on a series of drawings which are about the journey of a young boy during the Spanish Civil War (1936), up to the French Resistance (1939).

Nature above all. I’m all about colored metal point engraving where nature is presented through its hybrid, harmonious and surprising forms. Funny bugs join the party in a joyful earthly paradise.

I will exhibit in some art galleries until July and then in Montreuil-sous-Bois, France. I’m currently working on a sculpture installation project that will be shown at the Lasécu gallery in October 2012 in Lille, for the « Fantastic 2012 » Lille 3000 edition.

Hawaii est une île située à l’est du Japon. Elle a saisi mon coeur. D’une certaine manière, c’est un paysage très nostalgique. Une nouvelle terre, le vent, la vague, la route et les bad boys américains. La photo de groupe a été choisie comme une réalité mystérieuse.

J'ai toujours aimé les mains, c'est une vieille lubie. J'y fais souvent référence dans mes textes également. J'ai commencé par en prendre une, un matin, avec mon Iphone et depuis je les cherche, je scrute celles qui me parlent, les jolies, les moches, les vieilles, les entretenues, les calleuses... et voilà une série.

TES SOURCES D'INSPIRATION ?

Le métro. J'y passe environ 3 heures par jour, et je photographie les mains en secret le plus souvent.

Je suis d'abord attirée par l'allure générale de quelqu'un puis je cherche ses mains. C'est rare

mais il m'est arrivé d'en parler avec les gens qui ont repéré mon petit manège. Ça me gâche mon plaisir, je préfère imaginer ce que disent les mains que le savoir.

Je ne suis pas photographe, je ne sais pas s'il y aura une autre série, mais j'ai très envie de visages de mamies. Les mamies du bus avec leurs rides, leurs cheveux teintés et leurs histoires de places assises dans les transports en commun...

I always loved hands, it is an old fetish of mine.

I also frequently make reference to them in my texts. I started by taking a picture of a hand, one morning, with my iPhone, and since then, I keep seeking them, I observe the ones that talk to me, the beautiful ones, the ugly ones, the old ones, the well-kept ones, the rough-skinned ones...

And that is how a series was born.

YOUR SOURCES OF INSPIRATION ?

The subway. I spend almost three hours a day there, and I take pictures of hands, often in secret. I am first attracted to one's general

looks, then I search for his hands. I sometimes happened, rarely though, to talk about my work with people who noticed my little trick. It spoils all the fun for me, for I'd rather imagine what those hands say that knowing it.

I'm not a photographer, I don't know if there will be another series, but I would really enjoy taking pictures of granny faces. The grannies on the bus, with their wrinkles, their dyed hair and their fuss about the seats on public transport...

Le cinéma d'animation en stop-motion est pour moi, le mode d'expression le plus magique et complet qui soit. J'aime particulièrement la variété des matériaux utilisés qui vibrent sous les éclairages, l'idée de créer de toute pièce des mondes impossibles en miniature auxquels se confrontent les géants qui leur donnent vie.

Les contes, l'anatomie, les insectes, la mythologie, les films d'animation, les cauchemars, les facettes variées de la féminité. D'une manière générale j'aime lorsque la noirceur ou l'agressivité est

Pour l'instant parlons plutôt de rêve... un livre illustré en volume qui pourrait être le point de départ pour un court métrage d'animation.

Animation and stop motion is to me the most magical and complete way of expression. I particularly like the variety of materials used for lighting, the idea of creating impossible worlds from the beginning to the end, being the giant injecting life inside them.

YOUR SOURCES OF INSPIRATION ?

Fairy tales, anatomy, insects, mythology, animated movies, nightmares, femininity facets. I generally like it when darkness or aggressiveness is confronted to sweetnes and humor. Virginie Ropars’s splendid work gave me

much inspiration for art doll making. By the way, every time you see metal, it’s because of my collaborator and partner Benoît Polvêche.
