Outdoor Adventures

Get ready to “Pitch in for Parks” a volunteer based program offered through a partnership between Pierce County Parks and Recreation and McLendon Hardware. Pitch in for Parks is a great opportunity for all ages and abilities, (ages 15 and under with guardian) to pitch in and help your community. Supplies will be available for use plus a snack and water. Join us “rain or shine” with appropriate clothing for the weather and work gloves. Pitch in for an hour or for the entire time from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on the following Saturdays: January 26 – Chambers Creek Regional Park We’ve spent time on the Chambers Canyon Trail, now it’s time to show the Grandview Trail a little love. We’ll pull English ivy and install new, native plants. February 23 – Bresemann Forest February is a great month to plant native species! We’ll be restoring damaged habitat with native plants and pulling some ivy along the way. March 30 – Meridian Habitat Park It’s March Mulching Madness at Meridian Habitat Park! We’ll be mulching trees, flower beds, and adding a few more plants while we’re at it. This is a great opportunity to check out the new trails, dog park, and entry sculpture at this newly improved site. April 27 – Parkland Prairie Parks Appreciation Day - 9 AM - 12 Noon Grand Opening time at Parkland Prairie! For Parks Appreciation Day, we are appreciating the Parkland Community and all of the volunteers who’ve helped us transform the prairie. Celebrate with us, enjoy the wildflowers, and of course, pull a few Scotch broom seedlings. To volunteer your business, organization, or group of friends, contact: Jenn at (253) 798-4148 or jenn.sergent@piercecountywa.gov.

April 27

Parks bring tremendous benefits to the community, environment, and economy. Great parks and programs help build stronger community, connecting individuals, families, and groups through the power of play. Parks provide a place to keep kids active and off the streets. All of these are great reasons to come to a designated park and celebrate Earth Day, Arbor Day, National Parks Week, National Volunteer Week, and your local parks in one fun event. Be part of a major county-wide effort with nearly 2,000 other people working in their local parks at the same time.

Saturday, April 27, 2019 9:00 am -12 noon

Come prepared with gloves, tools, and weather appropriate clothing, to cut, pull, plant, and haul. We will be hosting work parties at Spanaway Park, Parkland Prairie and Orangegate Park. For additional locations, check out the www.parksappreciationday.net after April 1.

If your group of 10 or more people interested in “appreciating” a different Pierce County park site near you on April 27, contact Jenn at 253-798-4148 or jenn.sergent@piercecountywa.gov by March 29. www.piercecountywa.gov/parks

Ice Skating Learn-To-Skate Program The Ice Sports Industry’s (ISI) Learn To Skate program is used worldwide, has accepted standards and has been developed for the recreational skater; with teaching, testing, and award ribbon/patches available for different levels of achievement in basic skills and freestyle. Our program is based on the logical progression of skill development where skills learned in each level are built on skills achieved in the preceding level.

Sprinker Ice Skating Staff Sprinker Recreation Center proudly staff some of the most highly-qualified ice skating professionals: • Figure Skating Program Coordinator Janice Teodoro-Forbes • Skating Coaches: Brooke Bowman, Stephanie Burgess, Hannah Eby, Jessica Leatham, Jordan Lee, Lisa Martin, Stacey Norris, Glenn Patterson, SueEllen Quick, Jennifer Rubin, and Heidi Sullivan.

Registration Information: Levels of Instruction include: PreSkate 1, 2, 3 & 4, Beginning 1 & 2, PreAlpha, Alpha 1 & 2, Beta 1 & 2, Gamma 1 & 2, Delta 1 & 2, Beginning Freestyle, Freestyle 1, 2, & 3, and Beginning Freestyle 4. Beginning skaters should register for Beginning 1 class. Pre-Skate and Beginning skaters are evaluated during the first two weeks and placed in the appropriate class level. At the end of the 8 or 9 week session, skaters will be tested and may earn a ribbon/ patch before advancing to the next level. Pre-Registration is required. There must be at least 6 skaters in order to hold a class, otherwise the class may be canceled or combined with other levels when possible.

Program Cost: $90.00 (9 wks) $80.00 (8 wks) Saturdays $15.00 ISI Membership*

It is recommended that returning skaters wait to register after their skills test on the last day of class.

The program cost includes admission to the public session (on day of lesson only), skate rental, instructional fee, testing fee, ribbon or patch, and a pass good for two complimentary admissions to any regualr price public skating session. *ISI Membership: Required for All Learn To Skate Participants. Session 1 participants will need to renew/join ISI. Membership card or number is required for returning skaters at the time of registration for Sessions 2 and 3. As a member of ISI, students receive an ISI membership card, online quarterly magazine, secondary insurance and nationally registered skills tests. Allow 4-6 weeks from session start date for membership benefits to become effective (i.e. secondary medical coverage). As students progress the various levels, they have the opportunity to experience local, district and national competitions available to skaters of all ages, starting with the beginner’s basic Alpha test and ranging upward to the highest tests. These competitions are non-qualifying events. Emphasis is placed on participation and enjoyment. ISI and Sprinker Recreation Center are dedicated to providing quality recreational ice skating programs for the community.
