Judge looks reflects on long career Walsh: ‘It really makes you feel good to know you touched someone in a positive way.’ WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR
Circuit Judge J. David Walsh looks at retirement as a chance to retrace parts of the long, winding road of his career. There will be reunions with the brotherhood of aviators and bombardiers from his naval career, and a return to the music of his youth. Walsh, an Ormond Beach resident, has announced he will retire as judge next February after serving in the Seventh Judicial Circuit, which includes Flagler, Putnam, St. Johns and Volusia counties, including four years as chief SEE JUDGE PAGE 12

Seventy years! George W. and Doris Steele Hatzenbuhler celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary Saturday, July 11, at a luncheon at Halifax Golf and Country Club.
After the luncheon, a cake and champagne reception was held at the home of their daughter, Robyn, and son-in-law, John Slawinski. George is from New York and attended Syracuse University with time off while serving in WWII as a pilot. He returned to college and graduated with an engineering degree, then served in the Korean War. Doris is from Gloversville, New York. She graduated from business school before marrying George on July 12, 1945. They have lived in Connecticut and Wisconsin, and retired to Palm Coast in 1987.
Ludlow Lane resident John Westhoff said that when construction first began on the Matanzas Woods Parkway interchange at Interstate 95, in May, he could feel his whole house rattling. He was dealing with it. Until all the trees leading up to his property line were knocked down. Now, visible through the scattered branches of his crape myrtles, a large mound of dirt sits with construction vehicles perched upon it.
“When we had made the decision to purchase this home, we did so because (unlike many other homes in this area) it had a lovely view of trees and nature instead of a view of another home’s backyard,” Westhoff wrote in an email to Mayor Jon Netts and Councilwoman Heidi Shipley. “I would hope that you could understand how devastating it was for my wife and I when we first started seeing these very trees being knocked down.” The Federal Highway Administration approved the interchange justification report submitted by

the county in March 2011, and a groundbreaking for construction was held May 18, this year. At the groundbreaking, County Commissioner Frank Meeker talked about the need for the interchange. “It’s a project that’s been a long time coming,” he said. “I know the board is particularly happy having this project come to fruition, about 17 years after the devastating wildfires that pointed out the need for an additional interchange. I remember the old jokes back in those days, when everybody said, ‘Yeah, the animals can get out over the land bridge, but the citizens of Palm Coast are kind of stuck.” But the interchange is hoped to provide more than just an evacuation route. “It will relieve traffic off Palm Coast Parkway as the city continues to grow — and it will still grow,” said Matanzas Woods resident Brad West. “It’s going to become more and more necessary, and I think a lot of people

will welcome it in the long run,” he continued, adding that the interchange could also lead to commercial development. David Lusby, vice president of Palm Coast Holdings Inc., agrees that the city’s north end is underserviced. “If you look at that north end, on the east and west side of (Interstate) 95, there is virtually no commercial services without a fair drive,” he said. “I think that over time, the interchange will help that north end develop neighborhood commercial that will service their needs at a more convenient location.” Lusby and Palm Coast Holdings also have business interests in the interchange, as the new traffic pattern will route drivers SEE COMMERCIAL PAGE 5

A Palm Coast man convicted June 18 in the armed robbery and kidnapping of a delivery driver from King’s Palace Chinese restaurant was sentenced on July 15 to life in prison. Not a single family member or community member testified on Giuseppe Verdone’s behalf. Verdone was convicted by a Flagler County jury June 18 of robbery with a weapon, kidnapping with a weapon, battery, burglary with assault or battery, and burglary while armed. Circuit Judge David Walsh sentenced Verdone to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the kidnapping with a weapon charge and for the burglary with an assault or battery charge, with the two life sentences to be served concurrently. Verdone was also sentenced

to 30 years in prison for the robbery with a weapon charge as a prison releasee reoffender, with that sentence to be served concurrently with the others, and to time served on the battery charge. Verdone has 30 days to appeal.
Inside the city’s angry-customer response team The city of Palm Coast has formed a team to create protocols for dealing with irate customers, a response to an series of recent incidents in which a customer swore at and threatened city customer service employees. “Obviously our first goal is to de-escalate the situation whenever possible,” City Administration Coordinator Beau Falgout said in an update to the City Council about the team. The training the team is developing, Falgout said, will give staff members guidance on how to de-escalate confrontations, and also on when to report to a supervisor or contact the Sheriff’s Office, or call 911. City Councilman Bill McGuire said that the effort is not an attempt to “abridge anyone’s First Amendment rights when they come in the door.”

sometime between July 10 and July 14, causing about $12,000$15,000 in damage, according to a Sheriff’s Office case report. FTI Director Kevin McCarthy told a deputy that game cameras showed three young people on the property July 12, but didn’t show whether or not they entered the building. The FTI building is slated for demolition in January 2016, but the School Board, which owns the building, had hoped to salvage the interior fixtures. The School Board has reported multiple cases of youths damaging the building, but deputies have identified no suspects, according to the report.
Palm Coast Data evacuated A building at the Palm Coast Data facility at 6 Commerce Boulevard was evacuated July 16 after employees found an envelope with a suspicious substance. The package was found to be safe, a Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman said. The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, Flagler County Fire Rescue and a hazmat team from St. Johns County were called in to assist after an emergency call came in about the package at 10:55 a.m. “It was determined to not be a harmful substance or a public safety hazard,” Deputy Paula Priester said. “There was not a public safety hazard; they just followed procedure with evacuating the building and doing what they were supposed to do.”

Swim and Racquet Club to close? The Flagler County School District, which owns the property, might close it to save money while it works on a private-public partnership with the YMCA. JONATHAN SIMMONS NEWS EDITOR
The Belle Terre Swim and Racquet Club hasn’t had many members this past year, and it may soon have none at all: The School Board is considering shutting to property to the public and keeping it open only for school swim teams. That would cost just $30,000 a year, a fraction of what the district spends on the facility now. The board is in talks with the Volusia Flagler YMCA about a private-public partnership what would have the YMCA run the facility, but keeping it open until a possible agreement is reached, school district Chief Financial Officer Tom Tant said at a July 21 School Board workshop, “is not a good financial decision.” The property has been running at a deficit for years, Tant said, but it’s been getting worse. This past year, Tant said, the club’s revenues were $137,000 and its expenditures were about
$282,700: a deficit of $145,700. The previous year, the deficit was about $70,000. “The memberships have declined,” Tant said. “They were declining last year; they’ve declined even further.” Summer memberships at the club run through Sept. 7. After that date, Tant said, open memberships would total $1,302. There are 19 open pool memberships, of which 13 expire in September, four in October and two in December; 13 gym memberships, of which four expire in September, and nine in October; one gym and tennis membership that ends in December; and just one tennis membership. The Flagler County SyncroBelles, a youth synchronized swimming team, also use the pool. If the district closes the pool Sept. 7, as Tant suggested, it would refund the memberships that would have continued after that date, then “realign the facil-
ity to service our K-12 student populations — and what that means is we use the facility for our high school swim teams, and maybe we do a rental of the facilities for the SynchroBelles and we close the facility for public use, because public use is very small at this time.” Doing that would also mean the district could spend money earmarked for K-12 education for the facility, Tant said. The district would also encourage the Matanzas High School swim team, which practices at the city of Palm Coast’s Frieda Zamba Pool instead of the Belle Terre Swim and Racquet Club pool, to switch to the Belle Terre Swim and Racquet Club pool so that both high schools practice at the same location. The Matanzas team uses the Frieda Zamba Pool at no cost, city spokeswoman Cindi Lane said. The $30,000 required to keep the facility open for the swim teams would cover the cost of heating the pool, and minimal maintenance. “There’s going to be no staff there,” Tant said. “We will have a custodian come in periodically, and we will maintain the grounds, but that’s about it,
except for the swim teams when they come in, and they’re going to unlock the gate.” If the SynchroBelles rented the facility, that would also reduce the district’s $30,000-a-year cost, he said. The School Board will discuss plans for facility at a future board meeting.

BRIEFS Lien errors lead to letters charging residents for old owners’ mistakes Some city residents who have gotten notices that the city of Palm Coast will charge them for code violations abatement have said that the violations happened before they bought the property. One man, Marvin Mullins, said he got a notice he’d be charged for high grass the city had to mow in 2011, but he’d bought the property in 2012. The city mails nuisance abatement letters yearly, city spokeswoman Cindi Lane said, to recover money the city spent maintaining private property. “The purpose of these letters is to give the recipient an opportunity to pay for, dispute, or take issue with the charges,” Lane wrote in an email. “We agree that a new property owner who verified liens through a title company prior to their purchase should not be responsible for past property owner bills. It does happen that sometimes charges for previous property owners cross with the information we receive about new property owners. We will not hold the current owners liable for previous owner charges in these cases.” Owners who feel they’ve received a notice in error, she said, should call Bill Wry in the city’s Code Enforcement Department at 986-2334.

MARINELAND DOLPHIN ADVENTURE WELCOMES DOLPHIN CALF and appears to be getting milk; however, her weight gain has not reached the expected growth curve. The Marineland team is with Casique and the calf aroundthe-clock to care for and monitor their health. The next few days will be critical. Additional information about the dolphin calf’s condition will be reported as it is available. The calf joins three other generations of female dolphins all descendants of great grandmother Betty, who is more than 40 years old. First-time pregnancies in cetacean mothers are often
unsuccessful in both natural habitats and in human care. This is Casique’s first pregnancy. “In the coming months, as Casique’s confidence in the calf’s independence grows, our relationship with the baby can begin to develop,” said Stacey Spong, senior supervisor of animal training at Marineland Dolphin Adventure. “Our attention is focused on providing Casique the calories needed for her and the calf, as well as providing the best overall care for her and the calf during this critical time.”

On Sunday, July 12, one of Marineland Dolphin Adventure’s resident Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, Casique, successfully gave birth to a female calf. Shortly after birth, the calf took its first breath and then began to swim with its mother. However, the calf, as of July 12, was in guarded condition. The calf has developed a respiratory condition that is being investigated with further diagnostic testing. The mother, Casique, is in good health and is with her calf. The calf has had several days of successful nursing

The Palm Coast City Council at a Tuesday, July 21, meeting unanimously approved an ordinance eliminating a 50-foot height cap for cell towers along the Palm Coast Parkway corridor to let providers build new towers. “As we become a paperless society … we become dependant on these services as a business community and residents alike,” Palm Coast planner Constance Bentley said in a presentation at the meeting. While Lusby and West are both excited about the possibility of growth on the north end, Westhoff feels that if the interchange was planned so long ago, the city should have never allowed homes to be built so close. “As it turns out, the city does not care at all about how such a project would affect the quality of life and the property values of the handful of homeowners that had the misfortune of purchasing a home on the future site of an exit ramp,” he wrote in his email, adding that as a resident, he felt misinformed about the project. Looking at the mound of dirt rising through the trees of his backyard, Westhoff said, “As much as I like having an exit ramp so close, I never thought I would be living on an exit ramp.”

Plans for Palm Coast Park include single-family and multifamily residential neighborhoods and projects; commercial development, including a power center that will be anchored by national retailers; an industrial park with rail access; an office park; a big box retail center; a K-8 public school; a community park and several neighborhood parks; and two fire stations. “We’ve always felt that there is a percentage of people who live on that end that commute north for employment,” Lusby said. “Being able to get on and off at Matanzas starts to change traffic, which should change focus to Palm Coast Park. Generosity and goodwill: still in style DANIELLE L. O’KEEFE
BRIAN MCMILLAN EXECUTIVE EDITOR
After writing about my neighbor, Ernie, last week, I asked for stories of neighbors helping neighbors on Facebook, and I’ve adapted some of my favorites below. Thanks to everyone for sharing. Palm Coast is a great place to live, and that’s because there are so many generous people. Goodwill is not out of style, after all.
My husband and I were discussing this the other day. Maybe a person is sick or injured, can’t walk. Maybe they can’t afford gas for their lawn mower — any number of reasons. As neighbors, knock on their door and ask if they need help. This town has a tattle-tail feeling to me. I see online how people are so catty. I’ve lived here since March. I am thankful that my neighborhood is full of nice people. Also, thankful I don’t live near some of these catty, neighbor-behind-thecurtains tattle tails. TRACY CALLAHAN

READ ALONG: ‘GO SET A WATCHMAN’ We usually think of our community as everything associated with our city or county. Just because we live near each other, we have some things in common, and that unifies us. But a community can have an infinite number of sub-communities, based on other common interests. For example, there is a community of Flagler County residents who are sharing an experience of reading a book, “Go Set A Watchman,” by Harper Lee. This is the novel that has been in the news a lot recently. It’s apparently the original draft for what eventually became “To Kill A Mockingbird.” Some believe “Watchman” was published against Lee’s will, so it has been controversial, but also a major literary event that is too good to pass up. Pierre Tristam, editor of FlaglerLive.com, has gathered 10 readers to write a daily blog post, one post per chapter, to encourage this sense of community. I’m one of the 10 readers, and you can read my posts on my “Observed” blog on palmcoastobserver.com, or on FlaglerLive.com, alongside the other readers’ posts.

Find out what Harper Lee originally thought about the heroes of “To Kill A Mockingbird,” Atticus Finch and Jean Louise (“Scout”), in “Go Set a Watchman.”
I used to live across the street from Ernie. Just after he moved in, my husband and I were at work, and our daughter called to say, “Some stranger is mowing our lawn.” That was the beginning of a very close friendship. We have moved to a different neighborhood, but, to this day, we have Ernie over for dining usually once a week, and he still helps us out all the time, from giving our children rides home from school to babysitting our rabbit when we are out of town. Once, we were packing for a camping trip to the Keys. I have a crossover vehicle, and he sat in his driveway watching us try to cram in the tents, pillows, grill, snorkeling gear and all the other necessities of camping. Then he came over with the keys to his pickup truck and said, “You’re taking this to the Keys.”
It took me a while to be convinced, but we finally graciously accepted his offer. The world
definitely needs more Ernies! I couldn’t imagine my family’s life with out him!
Hunt for high-paying jobs, not retail
The Ernie Effect also has impacted us
We pay taxes for Florida Park Drive, too
Dear Editor: I still don’t think City Manager Jim Landon gets it. We are listed as 10th out of 919 cities in the state for land area. We have 89.97 square miles, only 13 square miles less the Orlando. We are 30th in the state based on population: 75,180 in the 2010 census. Yet every time Palm Coast gets a new Dollar Store or other minimum wage business, Jim Landon is trumpeting his success. I think Mr. Landon and city’s economic coordinator, Beau Falgout, really need to look towards higher paying businesses and not more and more retail (low paying) jobs. We have enough land that the city could give amazing tax breaks to any manufacturing company or higher paying company that wants to move here. Why are they not an pursuing that avenue more aggressively? It should be a top priority.
Dear Editor: For many years, my husband, John, and I were fortunate to live directly behind Lynn and Bill Cooper, who were kind and thoughtful beyond measure on many, many occasions. We are also fortunate enough to have Bill and Pat Wagner living directly across the street from us. Most memorable kindness from Pat: Our late dog, Joyce, was absolutely terrified of thunderstorms and would shake uncontrollably until the storm passed. If a storm came up and Pat knew we were out, she would come over, sit on Joyce’s blanket, and just hold her until the storm passed. Joyce was a 50-pound dog. One Sunday, Pat came over three different times to sit on the floor with Joyce and hold her. Both Lynn and Pat have passed away, but, in my heart, I know that heaven has gained two angels, and Joyce again has two caring “neighbors.”

Dear Editor: You have got to be kidding. The city of Palm Coast has the nerve to issue a statement about what the residents of Florida Park drive perceive as a problem for them and ask everyone to avoid their public roadway because it bothers them. I want to bring forth the issue I perceive as a real problem, and one that is going to get worse. Bird of Paradise Drive, possibly the oldest cutthrough in the city that I’m aware of. Here are some of the comparisons between the two: Florida Park first, has sidewalks; Bird of Paradise, three quarters of the road without sidewalks! Florida Park has two permanent speed monitoring devices on the road; Bird of Paradise has none! Florida Park get major press coverage forcing the city to act on their problems; Bird of Paradise gets none! I have requested time and time again that the sheriff do something about the constant
problem with speeders on Bird of Paradise Drive, and the most you get is about one hour of speed checks and some minor ticket writing, never during the times when speeding is at it’s worst. Belle Terre’s four-lane extension was supposed to alleviate the traffic on Bird of Paradise Drive, but no one seems to want to use it. Now we have an interstate exit/ entry to bring even more vehicles on Bird of Paradise, which I’m sure will have truck traffic embedded in it. One last issue to add to Bird of Paradise Drive problems: The major traffic for the high school. So if anybody needs a solution to traffic problems, I believe Bird of Paradise Drive should be at the top of the list.
GLADYS ROBERTS
It’s great you have a neighbor like Ernie! Sad it’s not too common anymore to have neighbors like that anymore. Growing up, our neighbors were like family: Everyone watched out for all the kids, help with home or car repairs, cook for the sick. Nowadays, I guess some neighbors are afraid if they try to help their fellow neighbor they may get sued. KIMBERLY COOK
The world does need more Ernies! I miss the times when neighbors knew and helped each other. Hoping enough people see the value in this and follow Ernie’s example.

THIEF STEALS NINTENDO, PAIR OF SNEAKERS 6 p.m. — First block of Pine Hill Lane Car break-in: A 52-year-old woman parked her Acura in her driveway the night of July 12. The next morning, her son noticed that the rear window was down, and his handheld Nintendo game system and pair of Jordan sneakers were gone. A GPS system was also stolen. The rear window doesn’t work and could be pushed up or pulled down from the outside, the woman told deputies. Deputies had no information on a possible suspect, and couldn’t get touch DNA because of the rain. BOAT THIEF CAN’T START BOAT, SWIMS OFF WITH IT 7:01 p.m. — First block of Palm Coast Resort Boulevard, Palm Coast Larceny in progress: A 55-yearold marina resident was at the local marina when he saw an unfamiliar man grab a fellow marina resident’s dinghy and try to start its motor. That didn’t work, so the thief began paddling it. Then the thief jumped into the water and pulled the boat along behind him from its bowline. The witness ran into the store and told the dinghy’s owner that someone was stealing his tender. Another boater also saw the incident and followed the thief as he swam off with the dinghy: The thief had turned north on the Intracoastal. He then left the boat on the shore around the corner, then fled on foot, he said. The boater

LIGHTING THE WAY? 9:01 p.m. — First block of Butterfield Drive Petit larceny: Someone stole eight yard lights, each worth about $4, from a 61-year-old Palm Coast woman’s yard the night of July 13 or early morning July 14, the woman told deputies. She noticed the lights were missing at about 8 p.m. July 14, and told a deputy that she’d heard a loud noise at about 2 a.m. that morning. Someone had also moved a yard statue. Deputies had no leads.

BURGLAR BREAKS DOOR FRAME, STEALS JEWELRY AND BOOZE 8:17 p.m. — First block of Cedar Hollow Court Burglary: A young woman and her grandmother were watching the young woman’s parents’ house while they were out of town, when the pair left for one night and then returned to find the front door frame broken and the master bedroom ransacked. A burglar had pried open a safe and left a firebox and jewelry box on the bed, and stolen jewelry and bottles of wine and liquor. The thief also opened a drawer used for prescription medication. A neighbor told a deputy that she didn’t see or hear anything overnight. Deputies had no suspects.

County Commission Boy, found locked in approves Sea Ray plan hot car, is recovering After the last of a series of contentious public hearings, Sea Ray boats has the county’s permission to break ground on a new employee parking lot on land south of its plant off Colbert Lane. Monday’s County Commission meeting on the issue drew about 65 people, and was in many ways a do-over of a meeting almost a week prior, when the county’s planning board held its vote on the matter after hearing presentations and public comments from many of the same people. The County Commission voted in favor of Sea Ray unanimously and with little discussion, approving the boat manufacturing company’s request for a zoning change from residential low-density and single-family to commercial high intensity so it can build its lot. The company’s current employee parking lot, Sea Ray Operations Manager Craig Wall said in a presentation before the commission, is jammed with boat molds, forcing employees to park along an entrance road. Opponents of the parking plan have said it could be cover for an expansion of manufacturing operations. Wall said it was not. The County Commission vote July 20 followed a July 14 vote of approval by the county’s Planning and Land Development board.
That vote, unlike the commission’s, wasn’t binding, but the unanimous planning board vote was a turn-around from an earlier vote on the parking lot proposal, in which the planning board voted unanimously against Sea Ray. With the planning board supporting Sea Ray, and the County Commission voting in Sea Ray’s favor once before — at a March 16 hearing — the July 20 vote came as no surprise to the parking lot plan’s opponents. “Everyone in this room knows how you’re going to vote tonight,” Roseanne Stocker, an opponent of the plan, told board members before the July 20 vote. Stocker said the plan was incompatible with the nature of the surrounding area. “These homeowners bought or built while the parcels were zoned residential and conservation. You guys are ripping the rug out from under them now.” Flagler Chamber President Rebecca DeLorenzo spoke in favor of Sea Ray. “Sea Ray’s request before you tonight are simple and without hidden agendas,” she said. “It’s about a business with deep roots in Flagler County, and to improve safety for 650 team members, and to enhance operating efficiency, again, by building a parking lot. … Voting yes will send a clear message that Flagler County values the businesses that choose to operate in our community.”
REBECCA DELORENZO, president of the Flagler County Chamber
“Deputies ran him under water and did CPR — and all that time we were on the phone, and we were in Port Orange — they got him cooled down, paramedics showed up and they took over from there,” Scott LaPete said. Lawton was rushed to Wolfson Children’s Hospital in Jacksonville and placed on a ventilator. “Seeing him laying there —we were in distress. ... It was gutwrenching,” Scott LaPete said. “Everybody else was super upset. I was trying to hold it together to make sure there was somebody that could at least think straight at the time.” Doctors kept Lawton in the hospital’s intensive care unit July 12 and July 13, then placed him under observation Tuesday, July 14, to make sure he was eating and drinking normally, and released him that night, Scott LaPete said. LaPete said he was grateful to the Sheriff’s Office deputies and paramedics who rescued his little boy. Lawton is getting back to normal, Scott LaPete said. “There are still some things that he used to do that he doesn’t do now; he’s more reserved,” Scott LaPete said. “We’re trying to get back to a little normalcy. I think he’s going to be back to normal soon.”

A 4-year-old boy found locked in his family’s hot Jeep the afternoon of July 12 is home from the hospital and expected to make a full recovery. Palm Coast dad Scott LaPete was at a softball game in Port Orange with his daughter when his eldest daughter called from home in a panic: The 13-yearold had been left to watch her 4-year-old brother, Lawton, and she’d fallen asleep next to him and woken up to find the front door open and her brother missing. She called 911, then her parents. “She was hysterical, so she couldn’t really talk well,” Scott LaPete said. “She couldn’t find him. She went into a real panic. The door was wide open. She called 911. ... If she hadn’t made that call at that time, it would be a whole other conversation, so she saved her brother’s life.” Deputies searching the area for the little boy found him lying unconscious in the backseat of the family’s locked sport utility vehicle in the driveway at around 2:30 p.m. The temperatures that afternoon rose into the 90s, and Lawton’s temperature was 107.1 degrees when deputies cut him out of the Jeep, Scott LaPete said.

judge. He practiced civil litigation in Volusia County for 25 years before his appointment as a judge in 2001. Since 2012, he has served in the felony, child dependency and drug court divisions in Flagler County. “I enjoyed being a trial judge,” he said recently. “I enjoyed trying cases and reading and applying the law. I found it to be engaging.” Some cases stick in his mind. One child dependency case successfully reached an adoption, even though the adoption had to be handled by phone because the child was in the hospital. “That child came back to visit me years later,” he said. “I think he was 5 years old. He was with his adoptive mother. We had a wonderful visit. It really makes you feel good to know you touched someone in a positive way.” Walsh said he is an adoptive father of two, so cases such as that can be especially touching. There are also cases that are unpleasant to deal with, such as murder cases, where even witnesses and jurors are affected. He said he made sure the cases were tried fairly. “I always have strived to be polite and fair to all litigants, to be prepared, and to rule in accord with the law and the facts presented to me,” he said. MORE JUDGES ARE NEEDED

cially in Flagler County. “We are undermanned in judges, and it’s been that way for many years,” he said. “The legislature had not created any new judgeships for our circuit even though we qualify.” He said Florida ranks about 40th among the states in money dedicated to the court system. Flagler is once again a growing county, and the legal system is required to do more with the same number of judges. “With that growth comes civil cases, family cases and criminal,” he said. “We just don’t have the manpower we should.” MISSIONS OVER VIETNAM
One of his plans for retirement is to see old friends at Navy reunions. After attending the University of South Carolina on a Naval ROTC scholarship, he served on a destroyer for seven months and then was trained as a flight officer. From 1969 to 1973, he was bombardier/navigator on an A-6 Intruder, flying 150 combat missions over North Vietnam. “What we did was pretty difficult,” he said. “We flew single plane attack missions. We lost a lot of planes.” He said during a mission over enemy territory, you don’t think of the danger, because you’re concentrating on navigation, finding the target, and then getting out before getting shot down.
FROM PAGE 1
After his two combat cruises on the USS Midway, he decided he should get into “something safer,” and got a law degree from Wake Forest University School of Law. He served in the intelligence area in the Navel Reserve, retiring as captain after 15 years. He’s looking forward to the next Navy reunion, in two years in San Diego. He describes the veterans as a close brotherhood. MAKING MUSIC
The musical part of his life has been in the background during his law career, but there could be a crescendo. As a youth, he played percussion in the school band as well as a dance band. He also played xylophone, piano and guitar, and his dad always wanted him to keep up with his music. “When I retire I can get back to working on those things,” he said. “That’s definitely something I want to do.” During his law career, he would play music only for relaxation, but it could be a bigger part of his life in the future. While in New Jersey at a niece’s wedding, he saw a bluegrass band. “I’m thinking of doing something like that one day,” he said. “A little bluegrass or country band would be fun.” Email news tips to editor@palmcoastobserver.com.

he new Flagler Falcons are bigger, faster, stronger and much better. Once a Pop Warner we i g h t - c o n t ro l l e d football program, now the Falcons will be an unlimited-weight team, with national championship aspirations. How? They have joined forces with the other incity program, the Flagler Wolfpack. Last month, both programs looked over the low amount of player participation for the upcoming season, and they thought it reasonable to merge into one team in order to save both programs. “The numbers were able to still run a program, but there would’ve been very little competition on our part,” said Charlie Washington, the director of the merged program. “So, we figured we could combine them, and that way, kids will have a better opportunity to be a competitive team, rather than just getting out there on the field.” With the merger, Washington believes, the level of competition between players on the team will only make for a better program. Because the old Falcons played in PAL, which is limited weight, and the Wolfpack played in unlim-

ited, it might appear to some that all Wolfpack players will be starters, which Washington says isn’t the case. “Competition breeds champions,” he said. “Also, some of the Pop Warner kids, who may be smaller, have better abilities than the unlimited-weight players. Some people think the unlimited weight is dangerous, but in middle school, high school and spring ball, there is no weight limit, so the notion that this level is unhealthy to play without a limit is bogus.” Washington has been a youth football coach since 2003. Along with his ownership of the semipro Flagler Knights organization, the boards chose him as the new program director, knowing all of his previous and current manag-
Every player on the team will get a chance to play. Both leagues abide by the Mandatory Play Rule, which dictates: 16-25 Players (10 Plays), 26-30 Players (8 Plays) and 31-35 Players (6 Plays). For more information on this rule, visit popwarner.com/football/ mandatoryplay.htm.
ing skills. “This is a great opportunity for me,” Washington said. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do because, since I went to college for sports, I always wanted to be a bigger part of teaching these kids. ... My goal is to see all these kids go to high school and be successful.” The Flagler Falcons have already begun summer practices for all five football teams, 6U, 8U, 10U, 12U and 14U. Each roster will be 36 players, with a waiting list. As the Falcons kick off a new year, Washington is optimistic about two city teams playing for one program. “The merge is not only going to improve the teams, but it’s going to improve families,” he said. “Some kids played in Pop Warner, and others played in unlimited weight all of their lives. Now, they’re getting the opportunity to play together and experience something different, so I think it’s great. Coaching staffs with different styles have also come together. This only makes for a great staff and a great football program.”

Team members are Yasmin Daiha, Cassandra Gubala, Elyse Hinman, Alexandra McMillin, Paige Areizaga, Samile Daiha, Megan Lake, Chiara Longo, Alyssa Trent and Victoria Woroniecki. Gubala and McMillin also finished fourth with their duet, and Woroniecki came in seventh place with her 13-15 solo, and she and Daiha placed sixth for 13-15 duet. The 13-15 team finished in eighth place overall. Team members are Paige Areizaga, Samile Daiha, Elyse Hinman, Megan Lake, Chiara Longo, Alyssa Trent, Victoria Woroniecki, with Sophia Alverez and Grace Weed as alternates. Areizaga and Trent placed 19th for 13-15 duet. The 12U team finished in 18th place. Team members are Alex Alvarado, Rachel Lee, Isabella Lojewski, Sarah Morris and Ella Steinwehr. “The girls did amazingly well,” coach Isabella Vasconcellos said. “After seeing our competition, I knew we would have positive results and place very high. They exceeded my expectations and reached our team goals. It was definitely a successful end of the season.” The SynchroBelles will kick off another season mid-August. Now, as the leader of the team, Gonzalez plans to put together a program that will enhance her players’ skills. “I’m a huge supporter of Coach Roxy, and I want to help her get this going,” said Steve Perrine, a softball parent. “As a very protective parent, I watched her very closely; and her methods of instruction and ability to clearly demonstrate, communicate and

When a young girl’s name makes the local headlines for a travel softball team, very little is said about her team because it’s not local. Palm Coast girls have to play in either Ormond Beach, with the Renegades, or they play in Jacksonville with the Fusion. Palm Coast Parks and Recreation Superintendent Roxy Gonzalez wants to change that. Gonzalez, a former high school and college softball standout from Miami, was just hired as Flagler FAST’s new coach, under new president Isaiah Hadley. “Isaiah had shut the program down because a lot of the kids left the team for various reasons,” Gonzalez said. “A lot of the par-

execute softball skills and drills were impeccable. Roxy’s sharp eye was able to pick up on the weaknesses of her athletes. She took the time and had the patience to break down necessary skills, correct the flaws, and work with the girls in perfecting those skills. She does all of this with structure, respect, and intensity, and that puts a smile on everyone’s face, parents, athletes and the coach.” Gonzalez’s coaching history began at Miami-Dade College as an assistant and recruiting coach, where she attended before playing at the University of South Florida. Then, she coached at Coral Gables, where she also played high school, and, from there she coached recreational ball until getting in Parks and Recreation. “I’m part of this community professionally, but I want to continue to be a part of the community overall,” she said. “I want to lend my skills to these kids. I’m really focused on building their skills and making them into competitive-level players.” Gonzalez has the evidence to prove that her skills are not just talk. She began developing Gabriella Fernandez at age 10, with no softball experience. Fernandez became an All-County player and was recruited by the University of Florida, where she started as catcher her freshman season before going into the medical field.

With her success as a player and coach, many parents have already begun to back Gonzalez as the coach who will put their girls in position to be successful. “I am confident that this is an opportunity that should not be missed, an opportunity for our local girls to further develop the skills necessary to play a higher level of softball,” he said. “There is no doubt our young ladies will be better equipped for high school competition and the pursuit of scholarships to colleges.” Email Jeff Dawsey at jeff@ palmcoastobserver.com.

In the wake of Robert Nocella’s resignation, Matanzas soccer coach Rich Weber has been hired to take over the role of the school’s athletics director. “I’ve been interested in this position for a while,” Weber said. “I work in the business world as a consultant and program manager with a huge background in youth sports and building programs. My heart has always loved and followed sports, as an athlete and coach, so I decided to throw my name in the hat. I was very impressed with (new principal) Dr. (Earl) Johnson, and I think he’s going to be very supportive of the athletics.” Weber has built a number of sports programs from scratch, including the PDA Soccer Club, which has grown from five teams to over 22 competitive teams, and over 1,000 players. While he will be overseeing the dozens of sports programs at Matanzas, Weber still plans to

coach soccer, another program he has built into a contender. “I’m already so invested and committed to the kids, so I don’t want any perceptions that I have stepped away and won’t give my best to that program,” he said. “Beyond next year, to be fair, if it becomes best overall for the athletics department if I not coach, then I will definitely look to get the right fit to make sure the program carries on.” His official start date, on the job, will be Monday, July 27, and, before he makes any projections or goals, Weber plans to meet with all of the coaches over the coming weeks. “My expertise from the professional and Army side is to come in and assess things,” Weber said. “I’m use to building action plans and helping to move them forward.” “I’m really exciting about capturing some of the synergy that I saw when we first got Pirate Nation going,” he added. “It got really exciting. I’m looking forward to catapulting student ownership and the spirit and pride of Matanzas, and getting them to support each other to stand up like never before. There is a lot of good kids and good coaches, and they’re ready to burst at the seams for this, so I think there will be a different feel at events, and I have a few ideas on how to get that going in a great direction.”

Amber Johnson competes in “beach flags” during the junior lifeguard portion of the competition.
The energy was high Thursday morning as the James P. “Mac” McCarthy Memorial Regional Surf Lifesaving Championships got underway in Flagler Beach. In the first event of the competition, the open men’s surf swim, the Flagler Beach lifeguards made a splash when veteran guard Trevor Lowe ran out of the water and crossed the finish line for a first-place win. “It’s awesome to let us know that we have people who can hang with the best of the best,” said Flagler Beach Capt. Rodney Harshbarger. “You always wonder when Trevor crushes everyone – is he a big fish in a small pond? Or

is he still a big fish when you put him in a bigger pond? But obviously, Trevor, best in the Southeast United States by about two yards.” Harshbarger said that coming from a small beach patrol, there is usually big distance between guards while training. But competing against other agencies, when you have people one inch in front of you and one inch behind you, the level of adrenaline and the level of competition rise. The Flagler Beach team finished eighth in the overall competition and had 23 Top 10 finishes. The open men 4-by-100 run relay team won first place. Team members were Jay Subers, Jan Vicens, Lukas Stocker and Scott Hammond. The women landline team, which included Amanda Provenzano, Julie Concannon, Michelle Soltes and Emily Petkovsek, won third place. More than 20 agencies from the Southeast Region, which includes Alabama, Florida (except for Duval and Nassau counties), Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, joined together for the competition, which was hosted in Flagler Beach for the first time. “It means everything for us to host,” said Tom Gillin, recreation director for the city of Flagler Beach. “We find that with the lifeguards, it’s a good opportunity to share ideas about how agencies do rescues and talk shop a little bit.” The 2015 Nautica USLA National Lifeguard Championships will be held Aug. 5-8 in Daytona Beach. have a small tradition at the Observer. When I started at the paper, when it was just one issue old, we didn’t have a website or a proper archive system yet. So, I kept my own archives; each week adding the new edition to the top of a stack on my desk. I continued this tradition after every issue until my stack of personal archives towered over the partitions of the cubicle. Those newspapers, spanning five years, stayed stacked on my desk until last week, when I brought them home to use as filler in my moving boxes. As I opened each old newspaper, the pages slightly yellowed on the edges, it was like opening a time capsule. I was reminded of half a decade of happenings in Flagler County — happenings that I had the privilege of sharing with the community. It has been a busy five years, covering festivals, fun in the classroom, School Board meetings, high school and community athletics, performing and visual arts, breaking news — and I can’t forget my cooking column. I am thankful to all the readers who have let me into their lives through reading my stories and viewing my photographs — and those who literally let me sit in their homes interviewing them and photographing their families, on occasion crashing their special family moments. I grew up in Flagler County, and it has been my home for the majority of my life. I have loved having the opportunity to give back to a community that gave to me as a youth. There are still an abundance of stories to be told here, but, the time has come for me to spread my wings. Next week, my car will be packed and this Florida girl will be moving across the country, to Colorado. Yes, I do realize that it is quite a bit colder there and that there are no beaches, but I think I will manage. The Observer gave me a shot, straight out of college, and I am so blessed to have been able to grow as a journalist and as a person, alongside the company as it grew. (Thanks, Brian, for always pushing me!) But this paper has been more than a job for me. The Observer is one of my families. It is a bittersweet goodbye, as I am so excited for the adventure ahead of me, but getting a little tearyeyed thinking about my departure. So, before the waterworks flow freely; farewell, Flagler. You will be missed.

Coldwell Banker Premier Properties donated a check for over $5,500 to GratitudeAmerica, as a result of the bank’s golf tournament this past spring. “The community’s support is vital to us continuing to be able to accomplish our mission in this community,” said John November, GratitudeAmerica’s executive director, who received the check on the behalf of the organization. Coldwell’s donation was enough to fund the organization’s annual veteran’s retreat, which will be held Sept. 10-13, at Marineland. For more information, call 904-432-8990.
