Conklin has been riding his shapes locally for three years. Last month, he took one of his long board to California, where he was the youngest finalist in the U18 longboard division at the Surfing America Nationals. He placed third.

JO HN CO PSY B UC K I N G BUL L RA I S E R A N D F I GH T ER John Copsy, 34, bought his first bucking bull his senior year of high school. Born and raised in Flagler County, Copsy said he came from a poor family, but always enjoyed participating in the local rodeo, Cracker Day. “I was the only one in my family to get involved with rodeo — I love it,” he said, adding that he had to stop riding bulls after he had back surgery. Now, Copsy fights bulls professionally. “Fighting bulls is something you’ve got to love because you’re gonna get beat up,” he said. “I’ve broken just about every bone I’ve got.” Photos by Shanna Fortier

While Copsy’s full time job is in the construction business, he also raises rodeo cows in Western Flagler County, some of which have gone to the National Finals Rodeo, in Las Vegas. “It’s a big accomplishment because they only select a few bulls for the NFR,” he said. “In Florida, they are very selective because of the long haul from here out to Las Vegas.” Of Copsy’s 25 rodeo cows, all are pure bred. “All the great bulls you’ve heard of, Houdini’s Magic, Raspberry Wine, Panhandle Slim — I’ve got calves out of every one of them. Our bloodline is pretty thick.”

Family friend Morgan Snyder, 16, helps Copsy administer an antiparasitic to his cattle one Saturday morning. Copsy said that raising his bulls is a family business and a passion. “There used to be real good money in the bucking bull business, but it’s just like the housing market and anything else, when the economy went down, so did the bull market.”

CELEBRATE Copsy’s 8-year-old son, Tatum, joins him as he tags the newest calf in the lot. “I don’t want my kids to fight bulls or ride bulls because I know how dangerous it is,” Copsy said. “But if I can keep them interested in raising them and hauling them – if when they get older, they want to start hauling bulls again, I’d get back on the highway. Anything to keep them off their backs or keep them from running in front of them. That’s my goal right now.”

On Saturday, June 13, Samaritan Ministries and Marjorie Phoenix hosted a community awareness luncheon at Shepherd of the Coast Lutheran Church to focus on the silent issues of Domestic Violence and the lack of resources for the growing number of victims in Flagler County. The event was a huge success with over 30 attendees where $2,628 was raised. Announced at the event was the kick-off of Samaritan Ministries’ 120-day campaign called Save the Starfish to fund the expansion of services for the immediate needs of new and existing client emergencies and programs. The campaign goal is $10,000. The purpose of this campaign is to meet the average cost per woman per week and the need that is growing. The objective is to save every “Starfish” that walks through the doors and not turn them away. This campaign will conclude at the annual event, which is the Save the Starfish Soiree. Please save the date of Saturday, October 3rd.
