Palm Coast has had bad luck with golf courses. The ailing Palm Harbor Golf Course has lost money for six straight years. The old Matanzas Woods Golf Course is an overgrown and often-complainedabout eyesore. But despite the golf travails of its larger neighbor, the city of Flagler Beach is considering getting into the golf game. In the coming weeks, the city will begin discuss whether to revive the old, overgrown ninehole Ocean Palm Golf Club course on its south side. The city owns most of that

Dave Pilvinsky, of Realty Exchange, and his wife, Christina, will be featured on the upcoming episode of “Waterfront House Hunting” on fyi network. The episode will air 10 p.m. Monday, July 6, and will also be viewable at fyi.tv. In “Waterfront House Hunting,” real estate expert Nick Waldner helps people find a new home in a waterfront location. “The experience itself was awesome,” said Pilvinsky, who has been a realtor in Flagler County for 10 years. Pilvinsky’s professional background proved to be a challenge during the search for his home, as he was asked to look at houses not as a product he is selling, but as a home that he and his wife would live their everyday lives in. “That was a struggle because I was very analytical,” he said. Another struggle was that Christina wanted to be by the beach and Dave wanted to be by the intracoastal. But the biggest excitement Pilvinsky said, was being able to show off Palm Coast through the taping. “When I got this opportunity to do the show, I wanted to help put Palm Coast on the map and show how attractive it is for the benefit of everyone that lives in Palm Coast,” he said.

Flagler Beach to consider revitalizing course land — 34 acres, zoned recreational and bought for $490,000 in 2013 — but there’s a problem: the city doesn’t own a 2.94-acre parcel within the former course that may be crucial for making the land work for golf. A citizen committee convened to study the issue will make its recommendation at a City Commission meeting July 9: that the city make an offer to buy it. That offer, the committee will advise, should be contingent on an agreement with a company that would lease and manage the course, and the value offered should be somewhere between the $75,000 value assessed by the county appraiser’s office and a $235,000 value determined by Ormond Beach-based Cooksey and Associates Real Estate Appraisers. The recommendation will also come with a caveat: One city resident, Duane McDaniel of Flagler Golf Management, has expressed interest in running the course, and indicated that he could do it without the problemsome 2.9 acres, which had been the course’s former driving range. The city could choose that option instead of spending more money and aquiring the old range, which other potential management companies said they would want. “There needs to be something said along the lines, ‘You know, we believe that this 2.9 is important, particularly for one if not two of those letters of of intent. But … there’s still that one group out there that has given us indi-

cation that this thing could still become a golf course, which fulfills the first part of our direction, without the 2.9 acres.’ I think that needs to be driven into the ground a little bit stronger,” City Manager Bruce Campbell said to Alternative Use Committee members at the July 26 meeting at which the committee formulated its recommendation. Not all of the committee members thought the land was worth appraising in the first place. One suggested the land could be used for something other than a golf course, such as parking, which the city is seeking as it works to revise its beach parking plan.

LITIGIOUS HISTORY

The 2.9 acres, a rectangular lot jutting out into the course from its east side along South Central Avenue, remains in the hands of Ocean Palm Golf President Stephen Cejner. Cejner sued the city of Flagler Beach in 2010, saying the city’s refusal to grant a Comprehensive Plan change that would have let him build condos on the property rendered the parcel “without any economic viability” and “amounted to a taking,” according to court documents. The court found against Cejner, stating that the land did

retain economic value — as a golf course — and that no taking had occurred. But the city found that finding out exactly how much it was worth wasn’t a simple matter. The first appraisal firm the city approached, New Smyrna Beach-based Matanzas Appraisal, wouldn’t take the assignment, Campbell said at the meeting. “These guys know the history of some of this,” he said. “Matanzas actually declined the assignment because they didn’t want to get involved in it.” And it wasn’t a simple proj-

Flagler students show

high passing rates

Of the Flagler students who took the algebra exam, 79% passed. In 10th-grade English, the rate was 54% in Flagler. JONATHAN SIMMONS NEWS EDITOR

Flagler students are near the top of the state in passing rates for algebra 1 exams, but closer to the middle of the pack in 10th-grade English language arts exams. The Flagler County School District ranked eighth out of the state’s 67 districts in passing rates for algebra 1 end-of-course exams, and 34th in the state for passing rates in state 10th-grade English language arts exams, according to data released by the Florida Department of Education Friday, June 26. An emailed memo sent Monday, June 29, from Flagler Schools Assessment Coord i n a to r Shawn Schmidli to district officials and the local press noted that the district’s students had a passing rate of 79% in the algebra 1 exam, “well above the state passer rate of 67%,” but a passing rate of 54% — equal to the statewide rate

— in the English language arts exam. The district also broke down the data for the algebra exam by school. Indian Trails Middle School had the highest pass rate at 99.5%, followed by Imagine at 93.6%, Buddy Taylor Middle School at 90.8%, Matanzas High School at 77.6% and Flagler Palm Coast High School at 60.5%. ect for Cooksey, either. Cooksey considered the highest, best possible use for the land — residential units — and made an assessment based on that hypotehetical scenario, even though the land is not zoned residential, Campbell said. “Even Cooksey — as well informed as he is and confident in his abilities — he struggled with this. … There’s really not much use for that property. But, he knew that he had to come up with some way to place a value on it other than it’s worth nothing. So, that’s why the hypothetical reasoning as to what’s the highest and the best use for the property, that’s why he got into all that, because he had to do something.” He arrived at $235,000, a number Campbell said didn’t surprise him. Committee member Michael Flank suggested Cooksey’s methodology might have led him to an unrealistically high number. “Everything that Cooksey did was based on the fact, unfortunately, that it would revert at some point to becoming residential use, which we’ve all recognized is not going to be the case. It’s not going to be designated for residential use,” he said. For that to happen, the city would have to change the land’s classification from recreational to residential — exactly what the city refused to do in the past when Cejner requested it, leading to Cejner’s suit. Committee member Paul Eik said that whatever the committee thought of the Cooksey’s number,

it neede to take it into account in its recommendation. “In the end, he put his name to the report, with a number. ... We asked for this report, we got this report, it needs to go forward from there. … It’s not something that you can just discount.” Campbell said the city hasn’t receieved any new proposals since it began looking into having the property appraised. At that time, it had three letters of intent, from Indigo Lakes Golf Club, Doug Hansen PGA and Flagler Golf Management, LLC. Campbell said he believed Indigo would “present a good product,” but Indigo considers the 2.9 acres critical, so the city would have to buy it if it wants to work with Indigo. “On the other hand,” Campbell said, “we’ve got a guy who lives right in Flagler Beach who’s stood in front of us twice, if not three times, and even in front of the commission and said, ‘I don’t need those 2.9 acres. I’ll have you a golf course by July 4’ — this is a few month back. So you could discount everything that Cooksey’s saying ... and say, ‘Hey, we don’t need to do anything with this 2.9 acres.’” The city could then make an offer to Cejner that’s lower than the value of Cooksey’s appraisal, Campbell said, “knowing that if he doesn’t accept it, or we’re on two different planets, you can always fall back to Duane and let him put the course in without the 2.9 acres. … The commission needs to decide who it wants to dance with.”

Corporal Donald Apperson retires from Sheriff’s Office Cpl. Donald “Donnie” Apperson has retired from a 25-year career with the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office that included patrol work, supervision of school resource deputies and many hours of volunteer work with the Police Athletic League. “After 25 years, I have so many memories, and have met a lot of great people along the way,” Apperson said in a news release. “I truly enjoyed the 13 years I spent working with the school district and coaching baseball.” Apperson, whose retirement was effective June 30, joined the Sheriff’s Office in March of 1990. Apperson began his law enforcement career in 1982 serving with the United States Army Military Police, then earned an associate’s degree from Hilbert College in New York and joined the Sheriff’s Office, serving as a patrol deputy and school resource deputy supervisor. He worked directly with the Flagler County School District and the Flagler Sheriff’s Police Athletic League. “I have known Donnie not only professionally, but personally as well,” Sheriff James. L. Manfre said. “I’ve had the honor of Donnie coaching my son Alec. Coaches are mentors and are a positive influence on today’s youth. Donnie was a good coach, and is an example of what a community police officer is.”

Mosquito Control plans new facility at airport The East Flagler Mosquito Control District will sell its current facility on Utility Drive for a new one at the Flagler Executive Airport. NEWS EDITOR

The East Flagler Mosquito Control District is planning a new, $1,868,900 facility at the Flagler Executive Airport. The new facility will let the Mosquito Control District — which stretches from Palm Coast and Bunnell to Marineland and Flagler Beach — house its aerial spraying helicopter and other aerial operations equipment and staff in one location, according to an East Flagler Mosquito Control District news release. As things are, the helicopter and a lab have been housed at the airport while the staff are at the East Flagler Mosquito Control District headquarters on Utility Drive in Palm Coast, seven miles away. The East Flagler Mosquito Control District board v o t e d June 22 to

approve a bid to build the new facility. The old one will be sold, possibly to the city of Palm Coast, which has utility offices next door. “We’ve been planning and budgeting for this project for years and the money exists for it outright,” East Flagler Mosquito Control District Director Joe Cash said in the news release. The groundbreaking on the new facility is planned for about two months in the future, and construction is expected to be completed within 140 days, East Flagler Mosquito Control District Operations Manager Mark Positano said. Much of the Mosquito Control District’s operations have been conducted by air over the past 20 years. The helicopter treats large areas of air and salt marsh to prevent hordes from forming. The district also uses spray trucks on the roads in the evening. The East Flagler Mosquito Control District has warned residents to practice the “three D’s of mosquito prevention”: Drain out water containers at least once a week, dress in long sleeves and long pants and light-colored, loose-fitting clothing, and defend by wearing repellent including DEET, picaridin, IR3535 or oil of lemon-eucalyptus.

Observer

Want your own ‘magical experience’? Dear Editor: What a wonderful article about the Free Clinic! Thank you, Palm Coast Observer and Brian McMillan, for being part of our support network, as you are for so many of the nonprofits in Flagler County. There are a couple things I would like to add to your article. Although our clinic may not have the newest furniture, we believe the donated equipment, pictures, lamps, etc., have resulted in creating an inviting, comfortable and clean medical clinic for our patients. Someone once said we really knew how to work around thrift-store

A little help on Palm Coast Parkway?! Dear Editor: Wasted gas and more pollution. Since the new traffic signals have been installed on Palm Coast Parkway, the west-bound lanes are backed up from Interstate 95 to Florida Park Drive, and cars are blocking intersections. If they can be programmed so we hit every light red like they are now, they can certainly be programmed to hit them green and keep traffic moving. Do it. BILL SIMPSON Palm Coast

Palm Coast should be tolerant of Supreme Court decisions Dear Editor: The Supreme Court of the U.S. has made some truly momentous decisions regarding the Affordable Care Act and same sex marriage. These decisions fundamentally change America forever, and I firmly believe for the good. I know some, even many, will disagree. But my hope is that here, in our beautiful Palm Coast, those with prominent voices, the “bully pulpits” of churches, civic organizations and public and private institutions, have the courage to not only accept but openly support these decisions. This will ease our path to

finds, and indeed we do know how to pinch those pennies! Most nonprofits know how to stretch that dollar as far as it will go. That’s part of the fun. Donating money is always appreciated — and needed — and the article mentioned the “magical experience” that many volunteers feel when they come work with us. I’m sure it happens at other organizations which provide services which the government can’t provide. Our patients tell us every day how thankful they are for being there for them. In our particular situation, the state of Florida provides sovereign immunity to our

communitywide unity and acceptance regardless of what may happen elsewhere in Florida or in other states. We should make Palm Coast a visible bastion of tolerance and acceptance of the new laws of the land. MIKE COCCHIOLA Palm Coast

Stop turning black students and families into ‘victims’ Dear Editor: Ms. Cocchiola’s letter to the editor lays out, clearly, the utter lack of understanding and common sense possessed by the progressive left. They must have “victims” to further implement their divisive, destructive ideology. Mr. Glover’s letter is crystal clear, Ms. Cocchiola, if only you would shed the scales from your eyes. It is apparent that Mr. Glover’s comments are directed squarely at two issues: the NAACP and the Southern Poverty Law Center’s racially motivated litigiousness and the fact that single-parent families, especially those without a father, are more prone to failing and having trouble in school. Black or white! It is the case, as he points out, that the percentage of single-parent black families is higher than that of white families. The proof that Mr. Glover is correct lies in the

licensed medical providers, as well as a couple other advantages for volunteering. Best of all, our volunteers can help out as little as once or twice a month, which might fit well into someone’s schedule, especially if someone is still working. In addition to talents related to the medical and dental fields, we need all sorts of spirited personnel such as those with secretarial, administrative, web design/ management, accounting, fund raising, organizational skills, and the list goes on and on. Orientation and job specific training is available. If anyone is retired but not “tired,” I encourage you

to consider volunteering, either with us, or the many other worthwhile nonprofit organizations in the county. fact that white single-parent households suffer from the same issues as black families in the same circumstance. You and your comrades are the only people who are focused on skin color. By calling black people “victims,” you are condescendingly implying that black people can’t take care of themselves as well as white people can. “The soft bigotry of low expectations.” Black people everywhere should be completely offended by your remarks. These students, black and white, sit in the same classrooms together in front of the same teachers learning the same lessons. Every day. “Scholastic equality”? Please define that, if at all possible. We, as Americans, are equal under the law and nowhere else. Please provide one factual example of our teachers mistreating any of our students based on the color of their skin. The entire teaching faculty and administrators of Flagler County should also be offended by your remarks, but I think they’ve misplaced their spines. The difference in man is of degree and not kind. We are all created in the image and likeness of God. We are Americans and all lives matter. Period.

Janet McDonald: “Thank you, Tim, for your acknowledgement that the faculty and administrators of Flagler County might be offended by unsubstantiated claims relative to this issue. As the visitors from SPLC found on their spontaneous tour of many Flagler schools, our administration has a wellarticulated, multi-tiered system in operation that should be used as a model for other districts. “The document that was highlighted at the recent board meeting acknowledged all that is already in place and operational, while formalizing the system for the community’s awareness. This agreement facilitates better communication with all participants about responsibilities and consequences for Flagler students, and will be distributed by many means when school resumes in August and be available on the district website. “Flagler Schools offers many opportunities for community members interested in supporting students by way of additional adult mentoring at every level. More positive interactions can only increase success of any student or organization. District staff will be glad to facilitate contributions to the Flagler Schools community.”

A STICKY SITUATION 8:15 a.m. — 100 block of Palm Coast Parkway Criminal Mischief: The superintendent of a construction project on Palm Coast Parkway told a Sheriff’s Office deputy that someone moved his two scissor lifts sometime in the early morning hours between midnight and 6 a.m., driving them into soft dirt behind the loading dock, where they became stuck. The supervisor said that the lifts could kill or injure someone if operated by a person who isn’t trained in their use. The equipment wasn’t damaged, and the supervisor told the deputy he would chain all of the scissor lifts together in the future. GETTIN’ JIGGLE WITH IT 11:55 a.m. — 100 block of Brunswick Lane Suspicious incident: A 14-yearold boy told deputies he was at home when he heard the front door knob jiggle and saw a young man who looked about 20 and was wearing a black hoodie and gloves walking away from the door. The strange

man then walked to the rear of the house and started jiggling the rear screen door knob. The teenager told a Sheriff’s Office deputy that he saw what he thought was the handle of gun tucked in the man’s waistband. A deputy found the home secure, but the Sheriff’s Office will keep an extra watch on the property. SCAMMER TARGETS ELDERLY WOMAN 1 p.m. — 100 block of Pritchard Drive. Fraud: Scammers defrauded a 77-year-old Palm Coast woman of $5,100. The woman told Sheriff’s Office deputies that about two weeks before, she got a letter saying she’d won $5,890.84 from the Publishers Clearing House. The instructions with an enclosed check told her to deposit the $5,890.84 check, then withdraw $5,100 and sent it to someone through the mail. She did so, and later got a notice from her bank that her account had a negative balance of $4,808. The number on the letter she received no longer worked.

Rescue jet skis ready for Fourth Flagler County Ocean Rescue has two new jet skis just in time for the busy Fourth of July holiday weekend. “If someone is in trouble in the water, we want to be able to get them assistance as quickly as possible,”

Fire Rescue Chief Don Petito said. The two new jet skis, two all-terrain vehicles and two trailers to pull the skis were bought with money from the close-out of the Hammock Dunes Development of Regional Impact agreement. The total cost of the project was $100,432, including two staging buildings and miscellaneous rescue gear.

Scientists doing routine water testing discovered an algal bloom at the confluence of Dead Lake and Bull Creek in western Flagler June 18. The scientists, working for the St. Johns River Water Management District, have forwarded their samples to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection for species identification, according to a district news release. That testing will also determine whether the samples contain toxins.

Deputy, residents save toddler Bystanders stopped a 2-year-old girl who wandered onto Belle Terre Parkway the morning of June 20, then waited with her for deputies to arrive after one of them called 911 for help. Flagler County Sheriff’s Office Deputy James Miley was dispatched to the scene at the intersection of Braddock Lane and Belle Terre Parkway at about 10:14 a.m., where he found the bystanders standing with the toddler. The man who’d called the Sheriff’s Office and was protecting the little girl quickly turned her over to Miley and left. A woman at the scene told Miley that “she observed the young child follow a small dog across the

south bound lanes of Belle Terre onto the median where bystanders intervened and stopped the girl from continuing,” Miley wrote in his report on the incident. Miley and a Sheriff’s Office corporal checked the neighborhood witnesses had seen the little girl walking from, and a woman hailed them on Bradmore Lane. The woman, 24-year-old Heather Lynn Seils, said that she was the little girl’s mother. She said she’d fallen asleep, and that when she awoke to check on her 2-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son — who she’d thought were watching TV — the front door was open and her 2-year-old girl and the family dog were both missing. She said the family was new to the area, and that the home’s front door wasn’t locked. Miley gave her information on child-proofing the home to keep her daughter from getting out in the future.

Allowing structure would require changing city height restrictions. JONATHAN SIMMONS NEWS EDITOR

Palm Coast’s cellular phone receptions has dead zones along the Palm Coast Parkway corridor that could be fixed with a new tower, but City Council expressed no enthusiasm at a June 30 workshop for the changes required to make it happen. Adding a tower that could fix the dead zones in the B-section, the R-section, the W-section and the P-section, City Manager Jim Landon told council members at the workshop, would mean changing the land development code for the Palm Coast Parkway Overlay Zone to allow a 150-foot cell phone tower. The current height cap on any structure in the corridor is set at 50 feet. Mayor Jon Netts asked Landon if two 50-foot towers would work. City planner Constance Bentley replied that it would require multiple 50-foot towers to get the kind of high-speed data service people use today. The city is considering a deal

that would allow one 150-foot tower on land near the city’s Water Plant 1. It would be built not by a service provider, but by another company that would construct the tower and then contract with multiple providers. Allowing the 150-foot tower would mean a city ordinance change to remove the height restriction for wireless communications facilities. City staff also recommends adding setbacks and requiring a tower to be at least 150 feet from Palm Coast Parkway, Belle Terre Parkway, homes and residential zoning districts. The matter will go before the Planning and Land Development Regulation Board, then come back to City Council for a decision. “We think we’ve got a solution, but we need to change the codes to make it happen,” Landon said. If the city doesn’t allow the code change so that a company can build a tower on city property, Landon said, it could build a tower on property not owned by the city.

Man charged with abuse

Charges of molesting young girl lead to arrest

John Joseph Schenone, 31, faces two charges related to molesting a child.

The girl, a relative of the suspect, told investigators she was 10 when the abuse began. The suspect has been married 42 years. JONATHAN SIMMONS NEWS EDITOR

Mario Edward DiGirolamo

Deputies arrested 60-yearold Palm Coast resident Mario Edward DiGirolamo June 26 on a capital sexual battery charge, a sexual molestation charge and an attempted sexual molestation charge for the sexual abuse of a 12-year-old girl. The girl, a relative of DiGirolamo’s, told investigators she was 10-and-a-half years old when the abuse began in February 2012, according to Sheriff’s Office documents. Her mother brought her to the Sheriff’s Office Feb. 12, 2015, to report the abuse, and a child protection team interviewed the girl Feb. 19. The girl said in an interview conducted by the First Coast Child Protection Team in February 2015 that DiGirolamo had on two occasions touched her genitalia under her clothes, once when she was sitting on his lap, and another time when she was doing a handstand split in the pool. Another time, she said, DiGirolamo was playing truth or dare with her, and he told her to put her hand in his underwear and leave it there for 10 seconds. She said she did not. The victim also told investigators about a sexually explicit remark she said DiGirola-

mo made to her. Deputies arrested DiGirolamo June 26 after the State Attorney’s Office filed charges. DiGirolamo refused to speak with deputies and hired an attorney, Palatka-based Garry Wood. Wood argued in a motion to reduce bond that the $300,000 bond ordered in DiGirolamo’s case was excessive in light of the fact that DiGirolamo owns a home with his wife of 42 years and has no prior record, and that DiGirolamo’s incarceration puts him at risk of losing his job as a home-based IT specialist in General Electric’s Health Care Department. The bond motion states that the victim’s mother threatened to file criminal charges in 2014, then filed a petition for injunction in February 2015, which DiGirolamo consented to without an admission of guilt. An order of no contact filed June 27 orders DiGirolamo to surrender all firearms and ammunition to the Sheriff’s Office within 24 hours of his release from jail, and to remain at least 500 feet away from the victim, her home and her school at all times. DiGirolamo remained incarcerated as of the morning of July 1. Email News Editor Jonathan Simmons at jonathan@palmcoastobserver.com.

told him that her daughter told her everything and that they were willing to forgive if he confessed.

John Joseph Schenone

A 31-year-old Palm Coast man was arrested June 29 on charges that he sexually molested his girlfriend’s 11-year-old daughter. The man, Wellwater Drive resident John Joseph Schenone, faces two charges of lewd and lascivious molestation of a child. The mother reported the crime to a Sheriff’s Office detective at the Palm Coast precinct June 28. She told the detective that she’d repeatedly found Schenone in her daughter’s room with the bedroom door closed and locked. When she knocked, Schenone “would open the door, explaining that he was helping (the victim) catch her pet hamster or that he was checking on the kids,” according to the detective’s summary of the mother’s statement. It happened again at about 4 a.m. June 28, as the mother got out of the shower and again noticed that bedroom door locked. When she knocked, her boyfriend said he was catching the hamster. But her daughter later said Schenone had been touching her inappropriately. The girl described to her mother how he had touched her genitalia, and said he’d done it between one and three times a week for months, usually at times when he thought she was asleep. After the mother reported the crime, staff members from the Department of Children and

Families and a Child Protective Team met the mother and the victim at the precinct. There were also two other children in the home — a 13-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl — both of whom provided statements to law enforcement. The victim told the Child Protective Team investigator in a recorded statement that Schenone molested her June 27 in the family’s bathroom and June 28 in her bedroom. She said it had happened about 50 times over about eight months. The mother then placed a law enforcement-recorded call to Schenone at about 10 p.m., saying her daughter had told her everything and that she and the victim were both willing to forgive him if he was honest about what happened. At first, he denied the accusations. After his girlfriend pressed him to be honest, he said something to her — exactly what is redacted in the report — and cited “work and the economy as major stressors in his life.” He spent the rest of the conversation begging his girlfriend to come home that evening — she’d said she wanted to stay away to process everything — and “explaining that he is very upset about what happened and that he needs her home to make him feel better,” and telling her that he loved her. Law enforcement did not complete a medical exam on the victim, but did collect some of her clothing as evidence.Schenone was jailed June 29 and remained incarcerated as of July 1. He had one prior arrest, for domestic violence assault, in Flagler County.

The comeback: Witness Palm Coast’s surging housing economy As the economy returns, Gold Coast Custom Homes is expanding to keep up with the new construction demand in Flagler County. JEFF DAWSEY STAFF WRITER

During the nation’s economic recession, like many other areas, Palm Coast was hit hard. The lot prices of upscale communities, such as the Conservatory and Yacht Harbor Village plummeted, tumbling from an average of $400,000 to anywhere from $20,000 to $100,000. But, in the last year, according to Nick Puma, co-founder of Gold Coast Custom Homes, those values have significantly increased, and continue to do so. “I believe the economy has corrected itself,” Puma said. “With the lack of inventory, harsh winters up north, built-up demand over the past years and an exceptional current value, many buyers are discovering the value of Flagler County. This area has so much to offer, including beautiful weather, beaches, golf courses and the luxurious communities we build in throughout the area.” At the economy’s lowest, no homes were built in The Conservatory, but, in the last few years, that number has risen to 10-15 per year. “We project, next year, there will be 20-30 housing starts there,” Puma added. “Buyers are taking advantage of the opportu-

nity to live in this exclusive golfcourse community. It’s easy to realize The Conservatory is one of the best-valued golf-course communities in the area.” Going through the best and worst times, Puma and co-founder Anthony Guccione are grateful that the market has picked back up as they are extremely busy building homes in communities throughout Flagler. “During the recession, it was like someone had turned the switch off,” Puma said. “Like most successful businesses, we had to refine processes, but things

have gotten a lot better. The last couple of years, sales have been doubling year after year. We have arrived at a point where we have to control our growth. Enduring those hard years has made the good years worthwhile.” Gold Coast Homes is building four homes in Yacht Harbor Village, including this threestory custom home.

“Things are Nick Puma takes in the view from the three-story balcony of a client’s home in Yacht Harbor Village.

starting to take off again, it’s a good feeling to see the housing market turn around.” NICK PUMA

little rain did not stop the fun and games Monday night at Ralph Carter Park. The Flagler Sheriff’s PAL Kids, Kops and K9s program, previously Dusk with a Deputy, brought officers together with neighborhood children aiming to make the parks feel safe again. The program also traveled to Hidden Trails Park Tuesday and Espanola Park Wednesday. A three-day event is planned 6-9 p.m. July 22, 23 and 24, at Carver Gym. PAL Director Kim Hale said these parks were targeted because kids in the area don’t always get brought in to events. “So, we thought we’d go out to them,” she said.

He was also a 2015 Golden Glove recipient, recording a .920 fielding percentage in the infield. Alvarado, a Bethune-Cookman commit, batted .272 with seven doubles and 10 RBIs this past season while also finishing second on the team with eight stolen bases. Alvarado averaged over a strikeout an inning and gave up less than one hit per inning on the mound. He has been clocked at 90 mph off the mound with an explosive slider. seriously. “When I first got into this league, I hadn’t played in 15 years, and this guy told me not to worry about it because everyone was old,” Zgorzelski said. “The first guy up hit the ball into the outfield and sprinted to second base. I said, ‘No way!’ If you climbed up a hill and watched these seniors play, you would swear they were 20-year-olds, except everybody gets tired after a few games.’”

What do you get, when you cross a judge, a former Minor League Baseball player, a UPS driver, a brain research scientist, a Realtor, a police officer and other professions? You get Team Flagler. In 2011, the travel team was formed through the Flagler County Softball League, of men from various walks of life, who joined, looking to continue in the game so many of them have been playing since grade school. Not only have these players attained a home to play ball, but they’ve also found a group of men they call friends. “Everybody gets along well out there,” said player Tom Knott. “All of us know each other, unlike a lot of other teams. We practice and play all week long together. We enjoy the camaraderie.” That closeness has allowed Team Flagler to become one of the top softball teams in the world, although they have been together for such a short time. “When we play teams that

have been together for 10 years plus, it’s very hard to beat them, with our team being so new,” said Jim Zgorzelski, a former Minor League player in the Red Sox’s organization. “Basically, that’s what we’re doing now. We’re starting to get some experience; we’re almost there.” Team Flagler takes 15 players to each tournament, and, depending on performances at practice and in games, rosters alter. While everyone in the Flagler league can’t play on Team Flagler, the guys still support the team, when they go out. “We have guys in the league that probably want to play but can’t,” Zgorzelski said. “But, they still pat us on the back, if we win. They like our team, and are proud of our success because they’re in the same league with us. When we bring championship banners back to Flagler, we hang them up on the fence at our field.” Team Flagler members play year-round, and, with a little help from different supporters, they fund all of their expenses. The guys will get to rest in August, which is their only “down” month. At the average age of 62, team manager John Martellucci says softball is the way they can still socialize. “Otherwise, we’ll be sitting at home watching TV,” he added. But, don’t let their age fool you. Like some younger teams, they’ll shock you, if you don’t take them

embers of the writing community and the art community came together Friday night for a unique event that combined the written and spoken word with paint on canvas. Pen Meets Brush, presented by Salvo Art and The Inspired Mic, featured the prose of 10 writers read aloud while J.J. Graham painted his interpretations, combining the stories into one finished painting. Presenters for the evening included Becky Pourchot, Sh’mal Ellenberg, Renny Roker, Dima Zales, Angelica Timothy, Tim Baker, Richard Meo, Anna Zaired, Kevin Cox and Amy Alysia. “This is the coolest thing,” Baker said after three presenters had gone, adding that he was going to have to read with one eye and watch Graham paint with the other. The cross pollination of artistic genres, aimed to bring the arts community together and offer a new perspective. “I think it’s amazing; bringing the different art forms together, it really touches the soul,” said Marissa Cevert, who attended the event while vising from Colorado. The final painting was sold during a silent auction. Proceeds from the sale will go to buying materials to create an art installation with the students at Salvo Art’s summer art camp.

MATTHEW MAXWELL TAKES FLAGLER COUNTY ROTARY PRESIDENCY, NAMED ROTARIAN OF THE YEAR

The Rotary Club of Flagler County installed its president and list of directors last month, including new president Matthew Maxwell. “It’s a great feeling; I can’t really describe it,” said Maxwell, who has been part of the club for the past eight years. “What we do for our community by doing things like fundraising and giving back — that’s what it really is all about.” Maxwell also won the Rotarian of the Year award at the ceremony. Previous President John Skripko also handed out multiple other awards such as the Rookie Rotarian of the Year, won by James Troiano, whom Skripko called the “social media expert” of Rotary. Recently retired Flagler County Sheriff’s Deputy Larry Jones also won the Spirit Rotarian of the Year for the service Jones had given to the community. “Larry Jones does many things for the community many people around are unaware of,” Skripko said about Jones, who also created the Christmas with the Deputy program, which last year helped 100 underprivileged children in Flagler County go holiday shoppingg with depuities. “He’s just that kind of guy that will give the shirt off his back for you.”

Planet Ice Cream: The most delicious on-the-job-training DID YOU KNOW?

Kenny Leandro opened an ice cream shop to gain business experience.

Hershey’s Ice Cream and Hershey’s Chocolate, both, originated out of Pennsylvania around the beginning of the 20th century, but they share no relations. They have been in constant trademark disputes ever since.

JEFF DAWSEY STAFF WRITER

As a business major at Daytona State College, Kenny Leandro, 19, hopes to, one day, own a Fortune 500 company. But for now, he’s content with running Planet Ice Cream in Flagler Beach. Leandro’s parents bought him the shop to give him experience to complement his degree. Since the opening of the parlor in late fall last year, Leandro has already undergone struggle 101, when trying to sell ice cream in the cold of the winter. “There were many ‘$2.75 days,’” Leandro said. “Only one customer came in, which was sort of difficult as a new business owner, but I made it through. I just turned the shop into a study hall, so I always stayed up-to-date on all my work.” His father, Kenny Leandro Sr., laughed, “I think his exact words were, ‘Everybody hates me.’ To open an ice cream shop in the winter is tough, but sometimes it works out like that.” The beginning for Leandro didn’t start out bad. He rapidly recognized the support of the Flagler Beach community, as Finns Beachside Pub (located right next to Planet Ice Cream), Rocky’s Pizzeria and other local businesses donated cash registers, lamps, tables and other items to help the

shop open. “Everyone around has been really good to us,” Leandro said. “They’ve treated us better than family.” Those businesses have also helped spread the word about the new ice cream shop in town. As the sun returned to Flagler County and winter melted away, Planet Ice Cream gained momentum, and had its most successful day during Bike Week. When all the bikers stopped at Finn’s, they mentioned the ice cream parlor next door, and what ensued blew the Leandros’ minds. “We had a line that ran outside the shop and around the corner,” Leandro Sr. said. “We didn’t know bikers liked ice cream like that, but our neighbors have

been good to us.” Other than ice cream, Planet Ice Cream also sells hotdogs and lobster, or “lobstah” rolls, which the shop decided to sell to help pull through the winter. Planet Ice Cream offers a total of 44 different flavors by Hershey’s Ice Cream (not affiliated with Hershey’s Chocolate). The Leandros made it clear that they’re not looking to become the next Baskin Robbins. They just want to gain more business experience and cool the city off by piling extra scoops into their customers’ waffle cones. “We’re just two fat guys with a scoop,” Leandro Sr. said. “We’re not trying to make millions. We just want to become a part of the community and make people happy with some good ice cream.”

Planet Ice Cream is located at 105G N. Oceanshore Blvd in Flagler Beach.

Gwenyth Leandro enjoys her ice cream while surfing the Internet in the lounge.
