Community Education Classes Backyard Beekeeping on the Coast

An active beehive can be kept in a surprisingly small area. Unlike yellow jackets, honeybees do not aggressively follow humans and are much more likely to travel miles from your yard looking for pollen and nectar. In this class you will learn about the habits of honeybees that make them easy neighbors, and make beekeeping a fun and rewarding hobby. We’ll cover... - Where to purchase your first colony of bees - Getting bees best suited to the Oregon Coast - How to purchase or build a backyard beehive - How to feed bees when they have no honey stores or food available from plants - What to do if/when you get a “swarm” - How to check your bees without getting stung… most of the time - A basic understanding of the roles of the queen, workers and drones

Devils Lake Water Quality 101

This is an introductory class into the water quality parameters monitored on Devils Lake. Students will be provided with a basic understanding as to why each of the parameters are monitored, when they are monitored, and by what means. This course will be part lecture, part demonstration and, depending on class size, part hands-on, as students will be given the opportunity to calibrate meters and conduct some water quality testing. While this introductory course focuses on Devils Lake, it will provide some foundation for students interested in volunteer water quality monitoring conducted elsewhere by local watershed councils and other non-profit organizations.
