Fundamentals of Floral Design

Learn the fundamentals of floral design in this fivepart class. Each class will start with instruction and demonstration; then each student will make the item themselves; with feedback, tips, and hands-on guidance. Classes will include standard vase, tall and airy vase, one dozen roses, basket design, pumpkin arrangement, Thanksgiving centerpiece, houseplants design, corsages and boutonnières, hand-tied bouquets, and more. This course will also include the chance to learn the 100 most commonly used flowers, greens, and plants in the floral industry. We’ll cover new ones each class, and be quizzed on the ones from the previous class.

Conversations About Geology: Let’s Talk About Rocks

This course introduces students to rocks and minerals as well as internally driven geologic processes including earthquakes, volcanoes and plate tectonics.

Mushroom Foraging

Join experienced forager and amateur mycologist Jesse Dolin on a guided mushroom foray at beautiful South Beach State Park. Participants will learn to identify a variety of mushrooms, and with luck, harvest a few edible varieties to cook and enjoy together. Jesse will share best practices for harvesting, transporting, and cooking wild mushrooms, and share his knowledge and tips related to his experiences wildcrafting on the Central Oregon Coast. Jesse has been fascinated with harvesting food from the wild since he was a young boy. A self-taught naturalist, Jesse is enthusiastic to share his knowledge and passion for harvesting and cooking wild ingredients from the land and sea. His childhood on the Oregon Coast was filled with crabbing, clamming, fishing and foraging and his passion for wildcrafting continues to this day in his hometown of Yachats.

Tips, Tricks & Treats for the Garden

Did you know there are easy ways to ID plants? For example, all mints have square stems, or all hemlocks have a bent top that looks like a buggy whip? Ever wonder what a cape cod tool is for the garden? Come join Master Gardeners Cathi Block and Mary Jane Bone litz for an informal discussion of unique tips, tricks and treats to help with your gardening. Bring your favorite gardening tool and share your experiences with other gardeners, regardless of your gardening experience. This should be great fun for everyone!

Mini Meadows for Native Pollinators

Join the Lincoln Soil and Water Conservation District and members of the Lincoln County Master Gardener Association as we explore the steps in making a mini meadow to support native pollinators. Participants will assist with plant identifi cation, noxious weed removal, and planting of native shrubs on-site at the Oregon Silverspot Butterfly Demo Garden. If you are itching to learn more about this threatened species and how to build pollinator habitat, you won’t want to miss this one-time event.

Happy Trails!

Go take a hike! (In Lincoln City, that is.) This class is an intro to the Open Spaces and Trails in and around Lincoln City, where you’ll learn all about these natural areas, including local wildlife and trails, as well as hiking etiquette. This is a two-part class, starting with a classroom presentation, followed by a guided hike at Spyglass Ridge. Time to lace up your hiking boots! Proceeds go towards building the new Taft park in Lincoln City.

Food as Medicine

Many medicinal herbs are tasty and can be prepared as food rather than what we typically picture as medicine. The herbs we will work with are GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe ) and have been utilized traditionally as food plants or culinary herbs for centuries. This is a hands-on educational experience. Students will learn how to craft a nutritive and medicinal Shrub/Drinking Vinegar, utilizing fresh herbs, vinegar and honey, then move on to herbal medicinal honeys. Everyone will go home with their own co-created Shrub and honey. Samples and a discussion on the plants utilized will be part of the

Birding Basics

Do you find yourself listening to an odd chirp while walking or gardening? Are you fascinated by the random rustlings in the bushes? Do you notice and enjoy the birds in your world, but wish you knew more about these clever and busy neighbors? This is just the class for you! Participants will learn how birds behave so it will be easier to find, watch, and identify the type you are seeing. Bird identification, adaptations, and habitat will be introduced. Birds of the Oregon Coast will be our focus during this 2-week class. Participants will have access to bird guides and binoculars and will learn how to use them. The final trip of the class will be a field trip to identify birds in the area.

Fall Fitness Courses

All four of these lively fitness classes are presented by Lincoln City Parks and Recreation, and are free with paid drop-in fee or with LCCC punch card or membership. No obligation to attend every session – choose the days you wish to attend, between Sept. 18 and Dec. 9. Pre-register for no additional charge with Oregon Coast Community College and receive a free “I’m With Waverly” OCCC T-shirt at your first class! All classes led by LoRee LaFon, and held at the Lincoln City Community Center, 2150 NE Oar Place.

Aqua Classes

Make some waves with a multi-level class incorporating a variety of formats to keep you moving and motivated. Workouts focus on cardiovascular training, muscle toning, flexibility, and coordination. Water exercise is low impact but not low intensity! Classes take place Mondays and Fridays in shallow water and Wednesdays in the deep end with a flotation belt.

Gentle Yoga

This class flows at a gentle pace and focuses on breathing, relaxation, and a variety of movements for stability and mobility. Develop keener body awareness through the use of fluid movements and gentle stretching. Practice progresses from reclining to standing postures and finishes with relaxation. This class may increase your range of motion, reduce pain, alleviate stress, and improve your quality of life. Bring your yoga mat, or mats can be provided.

Join us for a low-impact class designed to improve balance, build endurance, and strengthen muscles. Increase your ease of movement and prevent injuries by being stronger. Time Management Series

This course is designed to help better organize your days and will focus on a positive decision-making process. According to the instructor, “we will apply time management techniques to improve our relationships with co-workers, friends and family. This course will help us to sustain our performance at work and at home. We will discuss our daily schedules with other students in class. This course will help us to provide positive feedback and listen to other students’ comments. It will help us to form and describe simple and reachable goals for this year. We will take a close look at our monthly calendar, organizing, and cleaning routines.” Participants will need to provide their own printed calendar and a notebook to do the homework and document their progress in class.

AARP Smart Driver Course

This is the AARP flagship course that addresses how changes have impacted the way seniors should be driving. This course qualifies participants for a mandatory discount on their auto insurance premiums. ODOT requires a total of six (6) hours of instructional time to be eligible for a certificate of completion. Instructors ask AARP participants for $20 to cover the cost of materials ($25 for non-members). This fee will be paid at the start of the class to the instructor via cash or check. Participants should bring a drink and a sack lunch on the day of class. Please come ready with your AARP ID and driver’s license.

Landscape & Seascape Painting in Oil & Acrylic

Participants will be encouraged to paint a number of different landscapes and seascapes creatively, using photographs from various locations around Oregon. Learn to use the fundamentals of design by cropping images, simplifying objects and painting value studies to create a strong image. Katia will guide you through basic palette color choices and show you how to mix colors using simple color theory. She will offer individual instruction to each participant, covering the fundamentals of painting (composition, values, color, edges), and offering advice on handling the medium. Students will learn the essentials of oil/acrylic painting and become comfortable with solvents (for oils), oil/acrylic mediums, brushes and paints. Please feel free to bring whatever colors of paint you prefer. Student grade paints are recommended. Registrants will receive a list of paints and supplies Katia suggests for this course.

Introductory Gyotaku

Gyotaku is the Japanese art of fish printing. At its core, Gyotaku uses the actual fish to achieve a detailed image of the specimen. During this introductory two-hour session, students will gain an appreciation of the art’s history, print a variety of fish species, and learn techniques to paint fish eyes. This workshop is technique-driven and focuses on refining each print through critiquing and reviewing each print. Participants should come with a spirit of adventure and anticipation.

Visionary Painting

Would you enjoy bringing your visions to life in a mystical visionary painting? Bring your pencils, paper, and paints to start exploring visionary art and magical realism. Wrenna Monet will lead the class through a series of practices and techniques to “inspire students to begin to uncover the magical potential and highest purpose of their own artwork. These exercises are designed to build a bridge between the world of dreams and visions with tools we use to create, express, inspire, and teach.” Creating art is a type of Magic, Wrenna says, adding that “you are a conduit and channel at the busy intersection between spiritual and material realms.” This class will facilitate a space where students are guided to support each other’s journeys, as they go through a creative vision process to artistically create a “Soul Totem” or “Soul Tree.” Practical knowledge such as perspective, lighting, composition, and working with different mediums are important for every artist. “The foundational knowledge and experience of the artist can usually be felt in their artwork, and that’s what I want to show you in this course,” she said.

Oregon Coast Choir With Milo Graamans

This course is for anyone who would like to sing in a choral ensemble, no experience required. The class will cover a variety of musical styles, practice reading music, and there will be an opportunity to perform on the last day of the course. Longtime music faculty Dr. Mary Lee Scoville retired this year and Mr. Graamans, who frequently served as accompanist to Dr. Scoville and her OCCC choir, is presenting this course in her honor.

Mosaic Butterflies

Butterflies are the perfect mosaic subject! We’ll make a stained glass mosaic for indoor display on a recycled 6” ceramic tile substrate, using provided butterfly templates. Learn basic glass cutting with a wheeled nipper and how to transfer an image onto a solid substrate, then watch a grouting demo in class so you can complete that step at home with provided grout. All materials and tools provided, bring lunch. Beginners welcome!

The Art of Literary Portrait Making

Come parachute into a memoir-writing class and explore how those hard knocks and amazing trials and tribulations can be lifted into literary art. “On the coast,” says the instructor, Paul Haeder, “I have found dozens of people whose stories count for more than notches on their belts. They have lived, seen, analyzed, suffered and prevailed, and many have had pretty engaging lives. That’s the foundation to starting a memoir.” In this course, students will share and critique, and the instructor will guide participants, whether they want to write an essay or tackle a book-length project.

Crocheting for Beginners

This is a class for beginning crocheters and those who want to refresh their skills. You will learn to work basic stitches, including chain, single crochet, double crochet, and treble crochet. These basic stitches will be combined to create more complex stitches worked in backand-forth rows and in circular rounds. Oil Painting Using the Wet-on-Wet Method

Learn how to paint an oil painting using the wet-on-wet method. This method begins with painting the entire canvas with a light coat of oil paint for an easy blending technique. Learn how easy it is to blend and detail as you go, even if you currently do not have any drawing capabilities. The subject of this term’s class (see piece, at right, by G. Apples have evolved throughout human history to suit our needs. Over the last 3,000 years, humans have developed over 7,500 varieties worldwide, with new varietals being developed every day. So let’s journey through the evolution of apples, apple cultivation, apple cultivars, and grow our appreciation for Malus domestica, aka the apple.

Beginning Ceramics

General introduction to fundamental ceramic skills and clay experience to foster artistic growth. Students will learn techniques for hand building without the use of the potter’s wheel. Topics include methods of pinch, coil, and slab construction, applying glaze and introduction to loading and firing an electric kiln. Two classes per week for four weeks, 8 sessions total. Students may have additional studio time within our regular business hours or on Tues. nights from 5pm-9pm, for the duration of the course. Class is held at the Lincoln City Cultural Center. Students purchase their own clay and tools at a cost of $50, on the first day of class.

3D Design & Printing

This course is a more advanced continuation of our past Introduction to 3D Design and Printing class, with a focus on more advanced techniques and projects. Students will build upon their existing knowledge of 3D design and printing and delve deeper into the possibilities of this rapidly evolving technology using design software Tinkercad and Fusion 360. The class will cover the process of converting 2D drawings or models into 3D designs, and students are encouraged to bring in their own drawings or models to use as examples. As time allows, the class will work on student-submitted examples, and the class will have a few 3D printers available for demonstration and printing of student projects. This class is suitable for students who have taken the Introduction to 3D Design and Printing course or have prior experience with 3D design and printing and want to expand their knowledge beyond the basic level.

This course is open to writers of all genres, to those with a specific project in mind, and to folks looking for a way to get started. We will seek inspiration in form from texts we cherish and practice translating our own work into different styles over three sessions. This will involve close reading to try to understand how the selected writing works, then applying those mechanics to our pieces. Engaged Mindfulness Level I

This course is an introduction to the practice and benefits of a regular mindfulness practice for everyday. It provides a solid foundation for cultivating self-awareness, managing stress, and enhancing overall well-being. The class will go on a journey of self-discovery through mindfulness practices and group discussions, exploring the fundamental concepts and practices that can empower participants to become more aware of their thoughts, emotions, and sensations. Fundamentals of Personal Safety & Protection

This course is designed to provide students with essential knowledge and skills to enhance their personal safety in various environments. It offers an exploration of key elements crucial to safeguarding oneself and others, including situational awareness, crime prevention, home and personal security, mindset during conflict, as well as different methods of self-protection. Throughout the course, students will develop a foundation in situational awareness, learning to effectively observe and assess their surroundings to identify potential threats and dangers. They will gain insight into the psychology of criminals, enabling them to better understand criminal behaviors and motivations. The course will delve into practical crime prevention strategies, equipping students with valuable techniques to minimize their vulnerability and avoid becoming targets. Additionally, the course will introduce different methods of self-protection. This will include practical techniques for physical self-defense, such as basic strikes and escapes, as well as non-violent strategies for de-escalation and conflict resolution. Students will also explore the responsible use of personal safety tools and devices. ABC’s of Personal Safety: Essential concepts for outdoor adventurers

Imagine what it would feel like to travel, hike and enjoy new places worry-free. Outdoor adventuring has exploded in popularity. Real Estate Property Manager’s Test Prep

This course introduces the Oregon real estate property manager to licensing laws and rules including statutes within ORS696 pertaining to property management and OAR863. Get prepared to take the State of Oregon Property Manager License Exam. This course is the fastest way to qualify to take the exam, which covers the role of property managers, tenant relations, fair housing, lease agreements and more. You must attend all evening class sessions, and have online capacity to complete the self-study portion of this course. Students who pass this course are prepared to take the proctored Oregon Property Manager License exam, which is a required step to becoming a licensed property manager through the State or Oregon. Legacy Planning

Legacy planning means something different to each person. It should not be left for “someday” where it could end up creating tension and heartbreak. Through this workshop, attendees will learn tips for creating a plan that will fit their unique needs. Richard O’Hearn, a financial advisor, will talk about navigating financial planning for retirement and succession planning for businesses. Traci McDowall, an attorney, will present on estate planning including the difference between trusts and wills, different types of power of attorney available and probate. Brian Norris, a funeral home manager, will present about burial and cremation options available, the fundamentals of pre-planning and the final wishes organizer.

What to Bring

Candidates should refrain from bringing to the testing center large items such as backpacks, purses, laptops and other electronics and books. Your personal items must fit in small lockers provided to you during testing. You will be asked to remove large watches and other large jewelry before entering the room. The only things candidates need to bring are their ID and car keys (if applicable).

For 16 and 17 Year-Old Students

A student must be at least 16 years old to attend classes or take the test. Candidates 16 and 17 years of age must provide proof of one of the following in order to take the GED test:

Be a student in the Options program

Married or legally emancipated
