2022 Donor Scholar Reception Bookley

Page 1

THANK YOU, DONORS!

Message from Our President

Dear OCCC Donor,

I hope you gain as much joy from reviewing the 2022 Donor Scholar Commemorative Book as we did from producing it. It is always a joy to be reminded of our deserving scholarship recipients, and the generous donors who contribute to their success.

I’m so pleased that this year, in addition to the Commemorative Booklet, we are able once again to gather face to face to celebrate our amazing donors such as you, and our diligent and ever persistent scholarship recipients. I hope to see you there on October 27, 2022 from 4:00 – 5:30 on the OCCC Newport Campus, Commons.

I will be keeping this pamphlet for a long time, so I can revisit their stories and yours. As a donor myself, I am inspired in seeing the connections we forge and the fruits of believing in others. I thank you for your generosity and belief in the capacity of our students to achieve their dreams. We are a better community as a result.

With great fondness,

Message from OCCC Foundation Board President

To our esteemed donors,

Thank you. Your decision to contribute to the Oregon Coast Community College Foundation has a direct, notable, and transformative effect on OCCCF students. Every year, we meet students, for whom opportunities in life have been rare and limited. Some students are unhoused. Some are food insecure. Yet they make it into our coastal college with eyes wide open with optimism, drinking up every bit of knowledge, and producing noteworthy academic results. Their world opens up wide because of your generous financial support. Your contribution to the OCCCF Scholarship Fund makes education happen.

Every year, our scholarship award recipients write their own “thank you” letters. These letters are testimonials to perseverance and to accomplishment. Who are these students? They are your neighbors. They are newly minted nurses, welders, marine scientists, bookkeepers, future fouryear and advanced college graduates, teachers, doctors, lawyers…

On behalf of the OCCCF Board, I thank you for your support.

David James Robinson, Attorney OCCCF Board President Cayuga County Community College Graduate (SUNY)

A Teacher’s Gift Scholarship

Anna Bishop

I am writing to express my sincere gratitude to you for making this scholarship possible. I was thrilled to learn of my selection for the scholarship, and I am deeply appreciative of your support which will help me further my education and open up more job opportunities for me in the future. As I finish up my undergraduate degree at Southeast Missouri State University and prepare for a year of school at OCCC for the aquarist program, I’m nervous and excited for what the future holds. With your thoughtful gift I have been able to pursue this additional education opportunity that would be not have been possible otherwise!

Diana Ayllin Baltazar Gonzalez

I am very thankful for your generous scholarship, which is an invaluable bridge and opportunity for me to continue attending Oregon Coast Community College and pursue a degree in the medical field. With a lot of hard work and dedication, in March 2020 I received my GED certificate. I’m currently taking college classes to fulfil the pre-requisites of the certified medical assistant program, which I plan to enter in fall of 2023, and ultimately, become a certified nurse to make a greater impact in the communities I live. Thank you so much for making scholarship possible because they help students like me to continue pursuing a higher education and achieve their goals of getting a degree and use it to help their communities.

2022 OCCC Scholarship Recipients

Anna May Clark Scholarship

I would like to thank you for selecting me to receive this scholarship. It feels amazing to be supported in my educational goals and I am very grateful. My main educational goal is to attend the Natural Resources Program at Oregon State University, starting Fall Term 2024. I want to continue this path because it is a way of life for my family, and I am thankful to be a part of the organic farming community.

In hoping for success on my pathway, another goal of mine is to help others in the community, especially in these times of great turmoil. Food security is an issue along with resources, I would like to help others overcome these issues in the long run. Farmers are critical to resource usage and food security and I want to help people become self-sufficient. Rachel also received the Central Oregon Coast NOW Scholarship.

Andrea Taylor

I would like to thank the donor of this scholarship as well as the committee who selected and distributed awards. Upon opening my reward letter, I was honored and thrilled to learn of my selection. Growing up I was taught, “It’s not work if you’re doing what you love.” It took me a long time to figure out what I loved to do, and my chosen field offers me both variety and joy. I am currently attending OCCC for my Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer degree and have been blessed with a wealth of positive experiences, as I

2022 OCCC Scholarship Recipients

begin my journey towards my career in communications. You have afforded me the ability to spend more time on my education and less time at work. Words can’t express how grateful I am for OCCC, the Scholarship Foundation and all of your continued support.

Andrea also received the Central Oregon Coast NOW Scholarship and the United Methodist Women’s Scholarship.

Jennifer Walsh

Thank you so much for your contribution to furthering my education. Donors like yourselves are such amazing forces in our community that help to launch motivated students to reach their full potential. My goal is to first achieve my Associate’s Degree in Newport and then transfer to a 4-year establishment for a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. With this education, I plan to be a successful business owner and a dynamic contributor to our community.

Jennifer also received the United Methodist Women’s Scholarship.

Jillian Morales Archer

I would like to send my appreciation to my donors for these scholarships. I have worked my hardest to achieve small goals throughout my life: getting into college, receiving my bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology, and now adding another skill to my bag of tricks being accepted into the Aquarium Science Program. I greatly appreciate all the help I’ve received. Thank you.

Anne Stangeland Scholarship

Patricia Majeski

Thank you, donors, for selecting me for the Anne Stangeland Scholarship and investing in my future as a member of our community. As a mother to a beautiful 6-year-old girl and a first-generation college student, success is very important to me so I can be a good example of hard work achieving anything you put your mind to. These gifts make it so I can achieve my goals and attend the nursing program at our college without worries and make my dreams a reality.

Dr. Patrick O’Connor Scholarship

Lisa Ferland

I want to thank you for the opportunity to apply for this scholarship. I am what is considered a “non-traditional student” as I am an adult student who is going back to school after having raised my kids. I did not go to college right after high school and I did make many mistakes prior to getting where I am today, but I have learned that if you have a dream you must follow it, no matter how old you are or what is going on in your life. I am paying out of my own pocket as I have used all my available financial aid on previous attempts at doing what everyone else said I should do, but I am now following my dream, finally, and I thank you for the opportunity to pursue that dream.

Joel Lorenzo

Dear donors, I appreciate what you do for students like me so we can pursue our dreams. Many students that don’t qualify might opt to drop their classes due to financial reasons. However, thank you for your great impacts to every single student that qualifies for the assistance that you give us. I, in name of all the students like me that qualify for the grants, thank you very much for this great help. I appreciate what you do for us and for those that are willing to make a change in their lives. Thank you for what you do.

Maleah Smith

Thank you so much for your investment in my education. I have been working full time to make tuition payments and your donation has taken stress off of my shoulders. Your donation will be going towards getting a degree in nursing! Thank you again.

Tessa Adamson

I am attending Oregon Coast Community College in pursuit of an associate’s degree in nursing. I have been accepted into the nursing program at OCCC and will begin this fall. I am so grateful for this scholarship as I am also a single mother trying reach this goal, and this scholarship will help me to pay for my college education enabling me to reach it. There are no amount of words that will be able to express my thanks. Just know that this scholarship is greatly appreciated, and I will not be able to thank you enough! Thank you, thank you for this wonderful opportunity.

Tessa also received the Nelsue, LLC Scholarship.

Karen E. Driscoll Memorial Scholarship Sydney Boyle

It is difficult to express in words the gratitude I have for both the Karen E. Driscoll Memorial and OCCC Foundation Scholarship Funds. Without their assistance, I don’t think I would have been able to afford the remainder of my education. So, for this help, I cannot thank them enough.

The Aquarium Science Program at OCCC has exceeded my expectations and I am learning a tremendous amount of practical skills that will serve me well in the job market after graduation in 2023. I am confident that, with these acquired skills and knowledge, I will not have a problem finding a position as an aquarist in a public facility.

LA Johnson Scholarship

Hailey Nycum

Thank you so much for giving me this amazing opportunity to better my and my daughter’s life. With this scholarship, I will have more resources open to me and be able to invest more into my education and career. Being a single mother is extremely hard, but it is blessings like this that make life a little easier. I am so excited for this opportunity to graduate college and teach my daughter how important higher education is.

Central Coast Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Scholarship Kira Anderson

Thank you for your generous scholarship. I was very excited and appreciative to learn that I was selected as a recipient of this scholarship. I am a first-year undergraduate at Oregon Coast Community College. I will be majoring in Nursing and hope to graduate with an Associate of Science in Nursing, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and a Registered Nursing license. Thanks to you, I am one step closer to achieving my goals. With this scholarship I will have more time to focus on my academics. Your generosity will allow me to achieve my goals so I can give back to my community, similar to how you have given to me.

2022 OCCC Scholarship Recipients

Flor Isela Gaspar Marquez

I am writing to express my sincere gratitude for your generous scholarship. I am sincerely honored to have been selected as the recipient. This scholarship gives me hope that I will find ways to further my education, achieve my goals, and, in the end, contribute to my new country in a more productive way. My career goal is getting my nursing degree through the OCCC Nursing Program. I will start with the program this Fall 2022. When I become a nurse, I would like to work for a non-profit organization to help people. As a trilingual person, I also intend to assist Hispanic people who aren’t yet fluent in English to access medical care and to fully understand what is happening when they are ill. Based on what I have experienced as an immigrant, my desire to help other immigrants has grown because I don’t want other people who don’t speak English suffer as I did because of the language barrier. So, I hope to serve as many diverse communities as I can. Thank you again for your support and generosity. I promise you I will work very hard, and I always strive to do nothing less than my very best to show you that your funds have been wisely invested in me.

Nelsue, LLC Scholarship

Oregon State Credit Union Scholarship Ayanna Beck

attend Oregon Coast Community College for two years in order to get my ASOTB. With my degree, I hope to work for or start a nonprofit that helps build collaborative, eco efficient, self-sustainable communities for people in poverty.

Ayanna also received the TLC, A Division of Fibre Federal Scholarship.

Jessica Sanders

Through this scholarship and your generous support, it is my hope that I am laying a foundation, building a life for my children and myself...As a career, I have chosen to pursue an MBA with a goal of working in Human Resources. I had the opportunity to work in Human Resources earlier in my career. I treated my employees like extended family members, advocating for them, giving them a voice, being the welcoming committee, their cheerleaders. It had its more difficult days as well; disciplinary action is never anyone’s favorite job. Regardless, I loved the work I was involved with. In contemplating where I see myself secularly, HR was my obvious choice. I find fulfillment in working and contributing to something greater than myself, and in being of service to other people. I hope to have this opportunity again... The education I am receiving at OCCC is priceless. I just wish to thank you for your giving spirit and the assistance in allowing me to achieve more. I aim to apply my work ethics in giving my all, doing my best throughout my education and to not let your faith in me lead to disappointment.

On behalf on my boys and I – thank you!

Jessica also received the TLC, A Division of Fibre Federal Scholarship.

Penny Ittner Trust Scholarship

McKenzie Thomas

I would like to express my deepest thanks for the scholarship you have awarded me. The financial help this scholarship has provided will be of great assistance to me as I work to further my education... This scholarship will go towards paying for my nursing classes and books. It will allow me to keep my focus on striving for success in my classes and learning how to best care for my future patients. In the long term, I plan on using my education to find a job that will enable me to be an asset to the community I have grown up in. It is currently my plan to apply for a job at the Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital after graduation. I would eventually like to get my bachelor’s in nursing, and this scholarship will help me achieve that by helping to eliminate the debt that is often accrued by working towards a college degree. McKenzie also received the Taft Masonic Lodge 200 Scholarship.

Tasha Grunder

I truly appreciate this scholarship award. It will assist in alleviating the stress of the financial burden of school expenses. I have so much gratitude and am so very thankful for this scholarship. My goal is to complete my associates of nursing with OCCC and transfer to a university to obtain my bachelor’s of nursing.

Tasha also received the Taft Masonic Lodge 200 Scholarship.

I am truly grateful for the scholarship support. It will allow me to focus more closely on my studies and additional educational opportunities.

Thank you very much for this scholarship. It will be extremely helpful for me to get through my second year of nursing school. I was a lucky recipient of this scholarship last year, which was my first year in the nursing program. Since I am unable to work full time while in the program, this scholarship was more help than I could have dreamed of. Thank you for taking the time to look over my application.

Thank you so much for picking me to be one of the candidates for this scholarship. I cannot tell you how much it means to me and how much this helps me throughout my journey. I grew up in a lower-class home and growing up, I didn’t know if college was going be a possibility for me, knowing how expensive it is. The reason I’m able to go to school today is due to scholarships like this one. My plans are to continue my education at OCCC in the nursing program. I plan to graduate in two years and become a nurse in this community. I plan to give my time and dedication to this program to succeed and to become an outstanding nurse for our community. Thank you for making this possible!

Message from the Development Director

Dear Friends,

The Donor Scholar Commemorative Book affords me an opportunity to reflect on the past year and share with you some interesting trends in philanthropy.

According to Giving USA 2022, total giving in the US from individuals, bequests, corporations, and foundations reached a record high in 2021 to $484.85 billion. That is an increase, nation-wide, of $54.85 billion. The majority of donations came from individuals like you, gifting $326.87 billion, up 4.9% over the prior year.

Education ranked second, nationwide, in the hearts of donors following religion and surpassing human services, public/society benefits, health, international affairs, arts and culture, and the environment.

Online giving accounted for 12% of the total donations in 2021.

Last year, you kindly supported Oregon Coast Community College Foundation at the Year End Appeal, Pearls of Wisdom, In-Home Gatherings, the 1st OCCCF Student Art Show and Auction, the Ella Salmonella Raffle, through a Monthly Giving program and by remembering OCCC in your Legacy Planned Giving.

Because of you, OCCC students are able to fulfill their educational goals to become nurses, nurse assistants, and welders; to study general education, early childhood development, aquarium science and business; and to prepare for transferring to a four-year institution, or successfully receive their GED.

You did it! You continue to make someone’s future brighter. We most sincerely thank you.
