publisher/Editor April Briscoe CONTRIBUTORS Leisa Anderson (Editorial) Emily Marquart (Editorial)

from the editor Welcome to our autumn/winter issue 13!

Anne Blair (Sales & Admin) Thank you to all contributing photographers and suppliers. A special thank you also to the brides and grooms for allowing us to feature their beautiful North Coast weddings.

Depending on where you are on the Nor th Coast autumn has finally arrived with cooler mornings and evenings, it will soon be time to curl up on the sofa or stay in bed with your favourite wedding magazine. The cooler months can be a perfect time to consider getting married, the days are clear and bright, no hot sun or summer shower to interrupt your day and often low season costs can apply, so if you haven’t set a date yet…

ENQUIRIES & SUBMISSIONS 02 6651 1984 nthcoastwedding@optusnet.com.au

This issue is sure to get you inspired with your planning, star ting with our Floral Inspirations story. Flowers have come a long way since bouquets and buttonholes, their use is creative and imaginative from ceremonies to receptions and let’s not forget the bridal party. With the help of a stylist and florist just let your imagination run free.

DESIGN artgeko ncwdesign@optusnet.com.au

We also look at stylists and wedding planners, what they can do and how they can help. These exper ts can take the pressure off planning and arranging. It’s surprising how many brides I hear from who recommend getting a professional to help at least for par t, if not all, of the day.

North Coast WEDDINGS

If the big wedding with all the trimmings is not for you then maybe an elopement is more your style, from solo ceremonies to a few close family and friends, elopements are cer tainly growing in popularity. There are now even bespoke businesses who can plan your elopement just the way you want it to be, from vintage style caravan adventures to five star luxury. I love this time of year to go exploring with long walks on the beach or in the bush. There are so many picturesque small villages scattered around the Nor th Coast, great places to discover for a wedding destination. This issue we visit Yamba on the Clarence coast and Bellingen in the hinterland behind Coffs Harbour. Both are gorgeous locations, for not only a wedding but a shor t break for you and your guests. For anyone looking for some styling inspiration we have two gorgeous local treats for you, just brimming with ideas. All your regular favourites are there as well - full of products and pictures to pin or share. We are excited to again be sponsors of the Byron Bay Wedding Fair, this is a fabulous event with venues and vendors all coming together for the weekend 20 & 21 June. So if Byron is your wedding destination here is your oppor tunity to see the best it has to offer. This is a time I star t making lists of books I want to read and movies I must watch as well as catching up with family and friends I haven’t seen for a while. Weddings are a bit like that, the catch up I mean! Setting aside some time to see the people you love and do the things you like are what balancing your life and work is all about. Many of the wedding businesses on the Nor th Coast are run by people doing just that, we would like to thank them for all the time and dedication they give for making each wedding a unique and wonderful experience. So until the next issue, settle down and enjoy browsing through the pages of your favourite Nor th Coast wedding guide! Happy planning and enjoy!

3 Reasons to attend a Wedding expo

1

Planning and gathering ideas

Even if you haven’t made any decisions yet, a wedding expo is a great way to star t planning. Take a notebook and pen and write down ideas and themes you like. Collect information and talk to vendors about your ideas and get inspired by the creativity of each stand.

2

Save time and money

Wedding Expos are a great way to save you time and money. If you go with a clear view on what you want you can often save money as many vendors will offer expo discounts and specials. So be prepared to take advantage of this. Having everyone under one roof can also save valuable research time, so go through the vendor list and plan who you want to talk to.

3

Meet vendors in your area

If you are getting married in a different location to where you live, making a weekend of the event and travelling to the area makes sense. This will really give you a feel for the what to expect and what is available. You can also look around the town, check out things to do and see as well as looking for photographic locations.

Photographer Ben Wyeth has shot society weddings at prestigious locations such TH. O COM HP H as St Paul’s Cathedral, as well . A U H B EN W Y ET as more intimate, laidback beach affairs - and everything in between. After earning a degree in photojournalism, Ben got his start as a freelance press photographer in South Wales, which lead him to meet and photograph some famous faces. One day while selling prints at an art market, Ben was approached by a lady who loved his work and asked him to shoot her wedding. “It was on Valentine’s Day, which I guess was pretty auspicious,” Ben says. “I loved it and never looked back.” Gradually, weddings became the biggest part of Ben’s business.“I’ve always loved having diversity in @

my work and weddings have it all.You get to shoot documentary/reportage during the ceremony and observing moments and a portrait session with the bride and groom. Plus, you get to meet loads of people and travel to some beautiful locations.” In 2013, Ben and his family made the jump to relocate to the far north NSW coast.“The biggest difference I’ve noticed between UK and Australian weddings is the vibe seems a lot less formal over here, which is great.” Ben is very fond of shooting weddings in this region.“I think the far north coast region is pretty special,” he says. “I’d love to shoot a wedding at Sandon, near Brooms Head. It’s an amazing remote stretch of coastline.” Ben brings his wealth of experience to every wedding he shoots and has some tips to make sure your shoot goes smoothly on the big day. First, he advises using suppliers who understand

it’s your day and not theirs.“Whilst I’m there to use my experience and make suggestions, ultimately it’s your wedding.” He also says getting along with your photographer is vital. “I strongly believe if you feel good and are really enjoying yourself when you’re having your photo taken, that’s what you’ll remember when you look back at the image. I know I’ve done my job when people tell me that I’ve been a great photographer and they haven’t even seen the images.” Ben’s final and most important tip is to remember your wedding is a party. “The most awesome party you’d ever throw! So make sure you enjoy every moment, because it goes by in a flash.” To view Ben’s portfolio, get a quote or check availability, visit www.benwyeth.com.au. Advertorial

The Reception

Your wedding reception is where you can really flex your creative muscles and make the most of the floral décor trend. In addition to adorning your cake with lush blossoms that suit your style, flowers can be incorporated in eye-catching centrepieces, as well as show-stopping ceiling and wall installations. When it comes to floral centrepieces, don’t be afraid to think big! Many floral centrepieces are lovely and understated, but don’t disregard flowers if you’re after something big that will make a statement and dazzle your guests. Flower-filled bird cages, lush hydrangea flowing from the table to the floor or a wall of baby’s breath behind the bride and groom are all sure to add wow-factor and make your wedding memorable for everyone. For a simpler - but still stunning - take on the floral décor trend, consider a single long-lasting bloom attached a napkin ring or a sprinkle of

rose petals on the table. Other elegant ideas include branches of cherry blossoms, or flowers submerged in water in glass vases, topped with floating candles. Lighting is a great way to enhance floral décor at your reception, and it can be as striking or as understated as you wish. Candles and flowers as centrepieces are an easy way to create a peaceful ambience, while light installations have a more dramatic effect. It’s a good idea to ask your florist what lighting options they have (and how they will affect the cost). Floral reception décor works perfectly for the ever-popular rustic theme. Freshly picked wildflowers in teapots and vases make wonderful table decorations, as do thick branches drilled out and filled with lush blooms, and single stems in glass decanters. Tin cans painted soft blues and greens or yellow-washed window boxes filled

with daffodils work a treat for country garden themed weddings. If you’re looking for something slightly offbeat, consider using succulents in your wedding décor. Minty green succulents are beautiful when paired with plum-coloured tulips or peachy garden roses. Succulents in small pots can also be used to present escort cards (and can double as easy wedding favours your guests are sure to love). You can even incorporate flowers at the bar by creating a fancy flower-infused signature cocktail for your guests to enjoy, garnished with lavender buds, rose petals or chamomile flowers. Once you’ve decided what kind of floral décor you want for your ceremony and reception, it’s time to set up an appointment with your florist and jump online for DIY ideas. The best part? With so many beautiful blooms to complement your theme, you can’t go wrong.

Hannah & Bradley

The meeting We first met through one of Brad’s friends who was dating one of my cousins. Brad kept asking his friend to arrange a meeting with me. After a few unsuccessful attempts Brad’s friend needed a ‘lift’ home one night from a party where Brad ‘conveniently’ was. It was very much a set up! I was 17 and Brad was 18 - we have been best friends since!

Photography by

The proposal It was on Christmas Eve 2012. We were just at home and it is was in the morning. I was eating breakfast - Nothing different to normal. Just after I had finished eating breakfast Brad called me into our room where I found him with a small box sitting on the end of the bed. I can’t really remember what he said to me, I was just in total shock and overwhelmed with excitement! Of course I accepted.

PLANNING PERFECTION After the thrill of the proposal and the excitement of graduating from girlfriend to fiancé, there’s another big question you may like to ponder. And that is, should we hire a wedding planner? by Leisa Andersen

W

hether you’re pro-DIY or you prefer the professional touch, one thing is certain: wedding planners give brides the breathing space to focus on enjoying their engagement and their big day, instead of worrying about all the little details. But what can a wedding planner actually achieve? What services do they offer? And can it help or hinder your budget? We talk to local wedding planners and stylists to discover just how the professionals plan perfection… while dispelling a few common misconceptions. Photo: © Wavebreakmediamicro | Dreamstime.com

I CAN DO IT MYSELF After months (or years) of envisioning your wedding, brides are often impatient to begin the planning process. Researching suppliers, inspecting venues, tasting menus and poring over wedding gowns and bridesmaids’ dresses may be exciting at first, but with so many decisions to be made, how can you ensure that you’re making the right choice? “Wedding planners take away all of the stress,” says Jacqueline Hoy of J and J Events (jandjevents. org). “They allow you to feel so much more

relaxed about your day and they ensure that absolutely everything is taken care of.” Balancing your vision with the realities of your budget can often be one of the most challenging aspects when planning a wedding. And when you’re a first-time bride, with no prior knowledge of the wedding industry, making those crucial decisions on dress, venue, styling, transport and entertainment can greatly affect the rest of your budget. A wedding planner will help you recognise your priorities — for example, flowers, food or attire — and North Coast WEDDINGS

Annaliese & Ian

The meeting The very first time I met Ian is a little unclear, the fact that we were both five years old might be the reason, or maybe he just blew me away from the start. Ian and I both grew up in a rural town in NSW and went to school with each other from kindergarten to Year 10. We began dating at the end of Year 10. The proposal Ian and I went for what I thought was just a weekend away to Port Macquarie. After dinner, wine and a bubble bath, Ian had planned to pop the question, however I fell asleep. He woke me in the morning with breakfast, a cup of tea and an engagement ring. He had planned the rest of the day with massages, geisha baths and chocolate pancakes‌the only way to a girl’s heart. “From the iconic Byron beaches to the magical hinterland forests, there are so many choices of beautiful settings,” says Helen. “We love The Pass for a beautiful spot for a beach wedding,” says Nick Columb from Dot and Herbie,“ while the green hills around Alstonville offer a stunning rural setting. And the best part is: you can have a country wedding with the ease of metropolitan-like services such as Dot and Herbie to take care of you.”

Have your party... afterwards

So you’re concerned that some family and friends will feel left out from the celebrations? Then why not plan a par ty after you return from your honeymoon? Whether you’re inviting a few guests around for a dinner party or throwing a wild all-night bash, an after-party gives family and friends a chance to congratulate you on your recent nuptials. Your guests won’t be expecting a threecourse seated meal and dress code, instead

they’ll simply be grabbing some nibblies and a glass of wine and celebrating your marriage with you. “We threw a ‘we-got-married’ cocktail party with family and friends. It was a great way to celebrate the beginning of our marriage. And yes, it was wonderful to put on my wedding dress one last time,” adds Jess.

If this sounds appealing, but you’re still worried about the negative opinions of family and friends, take the advice of newlyweds Jess and Chris: “Do what makes you happy – not what other people might expect you to do. It’s your special day after all!” Above: RetroPod: a funky vintage caravan perfect for cosy honeymoon accommodation.

A unique country location With its gorgeous location, outstanding facilities and exceptionally experienced event organisers, the Old Butter Factory in Bellingen has all you need for the wedding of your dreams. The picturesque grounds offer stunning ceremony backdrops and a range of photo opportunities. The 100-year old building, with is cathedral ceiling and wide forecourt, is perfectly situated for receptions following a garden ceremony, or after a ceremony held at other popular district venues such as Glennifer Church, Valla Headland, Dorrigo waterfalls and, of course, the Bellinger River bank itself. Owners and event organisers Ray and Pia have many good memories of the ceremonies and receptions held here. “Each occasion has been unique and has brought us wonderful moments, both happy and bittersweet,” Ray says. “Some of the most memorable events haven’t had anything to do with how much was spent on the occasion, but how everyone felt at the end of a special evening.”

If you book your ceremony or reception at The Old Butter Factory, you’re sure to be in good hands - both Ray and Pia have over 25 years’ experience creating special events all over Australia and around the world. After being part of the convention production team at Reg Grundy television, Ray opened his own event design and production company in 1980, and went on to create and produce high profile events, such as Pope John Paul II’s visit to Sydney. Pia was attracted to the hospitality industry as a teenager and began with an apprenticeship at a high-class resort in Germany. Her experience and talent lead to many prestigious positions, notably Assistant Director of Catering at Sydney’s fivestar Four Seasons hotel. In 2003, Pia and Ray bought the Old Butter Factory complex and have worked hard to develop and restore this stunning landmark. They are passionate about working closely with brides and grooms to style an event that suits their specific tastes and requirements.

Ray and Pia’s satisfaction comes from being part of the occasion and not just a food service supplier running to a schedule. Over the years, this has created strong friendships and they continue to stay in touch with many couples. “We look forward to each and every new wedding, meeting with brides and grooms and helping them make their wish list for their special day actually come true.” To enquire about securing a booking at this most unique venue and to make an appointment to discuss your special wish list, visit www.theoldbutterfactory.com.au or email Ray and Pia direct at cspevents@iinet.net.au. O

choose local

rganising a wedding is a complicated, and sometimes stressful exercise; there are so many things to consider, and people to please. Many people do not necessarily possess expertise in every topic covered by a comprehensive wedding plan. From my experience in wedding catering, I have observed that the topic of beverages is an area that is often little understood. As with all of the other choices that a bride and groom can make, there are just so many options out there. Do you save money and go with the house wine and standard beer package, or lash out on French Champagne and matching wines for each course of your meal? These are fairly big questions related to budget, taste and knowledge. I would like to suggest that a little extra thought regarding beverages will pay dividends in terms of how all of your guests enjoy the day. In planning the beverages for the event, firstly consider the guest list. Not all of the invitees will be identical to the bride and groom in terms of their preferences. Elderly people and children, for example, should be provided for, think fresh juices, non-alcoholic cocktails, low alcohol options. By all means include items that you and your friends enjoy, but be creative. A refreshing cocktail to start instead of the ubiquitous sparkling wine, for example. Choose some beers from the huge range of genuine artisan brews out there, we have a multitude of small breweries on the North Coast to have a look at and here at Oak Street Food & Wine, local beer is the easiest to sell. For the wine, I also recommend staying local if possible. There is a nice synergy that occurs when the products consumed at the wedding are also produced in the same region. Here on the North Coast, despite the average restaurant wine list, there is plenty of wine on offer, from the Hastings Valley to Coffs Harbour and up to the New England Plateau, there are some really interesting and innovative wines out there. Take the opportunity and do a little wine tasting journey, you will be pleasantly surprised. For example, Pinot Noir from Tenterfield, Gewurztraminer from Tingha, Barbera from Dumaresq Valley, just to name a few. For the toast, sparkling wine is a must, but fortunately that is available locally as well. For the best examples it is best to look to the cool climate regions, so I suggest going for altitude. There are certainly some delicious examples to be found from Armidale through to the Granite Belt on the Queensland border. Don’t make the beverage selection for your wedding without considering some of the wonderful local products in the region that you have chosen for the celebration. which is why having a solid skincare routine in the months leading up to the big day is so important. Another trend Carmel is seeing at the moment is brides wanting more contouring. “Contouring flatters the shape of your face by enhancing your cheekbones, defining your nose and adding overall definition.” Some tips for brides to keep in mind: staying hydrated is key to clear skin; get your spray tan two days prior (doing the same for your make up trial); and allow 45 minutes to an hour per person for makeup application. With the ever changing trends in fashion, The Makeup Box puts high priority in keeping up to date and regularly attending shows and workshops with leading artists. Carmel is currently preparing for her trip to Brisbane’s Pro Makeup Show in April, where she will be attending a workshop by amazing artist Mia Connor. “I can’t wait to bring the skills I learn at the Pro Makeup Show back to Coffs for both my gorgeous brides and makeup class students.” To find out more about Bridal Packages offered by The Makeup Box by Carmel Kestles, contact Carmel on 0413 903 407 or visit www.insidethemakeupbox.com.au. You’ve been planning your wedding day for months and everything’s organised – but have you thought about what happens once your marriage is solemnised? One of the decisions you’ll need to consider is whether or not to change your name. There is no law to make you change your name. However, it’s a custom that has been accepted across Australia since weddings began. Now the choice is up to the individual but whatever you decide, you need to remember there are certain legal requirements associated with changing your name. On the day of your wedding you will be presented with a Commonwealth of Australia “Cer tificate of Marriage.” However, this may not be accepted as a form of identification to change your name. After you are married, your civil or religious celebrant will forward the paperwork to the NSW Registry of Births Deaths & Marriages to register your wedding. This is how the state knows you have solemnised your marriage. Once the marriage is registered, you can apply for the standard marriage cer tificate for $51.00. This cer tificate is required if you want to change your name on important documents such as your passpor t or driver’s licence. Add $23.00 if you would like a commemorative cer tificate. Whatever you decide, the name of the game is change or not to change. Like us on facebook.com/bdm.nsw or for more information, visit our website at www.bdm.nsw.gov.au or phone 13 77 88.
