The days are cooler (great for the suit wearing guys) and the autumn colours and bare trees in many areas make stunning backdrops. So if you haven’t set a date yet consider autumn or winter as an option.

3 REASONS TO ATTEND A WEDDING EXPO

1

Planning and gathering ideas

Even if you haven’t made any decisions yet, a wedding expo is a great way to star t planning. Take a notebook and pen and write down ideas and themes you like. Collect information and talk to vendors about your ideas and get inspired by the creativity of each stand.

2

Save time and money

Wedding Expos are a great way to save you time and money. If you go with a clear view on what you want you can often save money as many vendors will offer expo discounts and specials. So be prepared to take advantage of this. Having everyone under one roof can also save valuable research time, so go through the vendor list and plan who you want to talk to.

3

Meet vendors in your area

If you are getting married in a different location to where you live, making a weekend of the event and travelling to the area makes sense. This will really give you a feel for the what to expect and what is available. You can also look around the town, check out things to do and see as well as looking for photographic locations.

Take Me Away

Whether you’re marrying in a location you’ve only dreamed of visiting, or you’re travelling from interstate to wed on the gorgeous North Coast, planning a wedding away from your home town can be an exciting and challenging experience. But with some keen organisation, a little local knowledge and a great team, your destination wedding can truly be a holiday of a lifetime. By Leisa Anderson

FROM THE GROUND UP

You’ve decided upon a location and you’re star ting to plan your big day. Let’s first star t with the basics. Do you know the climate? Are you marrying in the wet season? If your ceremony is by the ocean, do you know what time the tide comes in? Are you aware of the level of humidity you’ll be facing? And do you know what time the sun sets? When choosing an unfamiliar location, make the local tourism centre your first point of contact. They’ll be able to help you get a better picture of your destination – including the easiest ways to travel to your destination, the most suitable

accommodation options available, and the dining and enter tainment options in the region that you and your guests may enjoy during your stay.

CONSIDER YOUR GUESTS

When you’re planning a wedding away from home, it can be an exciting time for your guests. They not only get to see you wed in a beautiful location — they also will enjoy a holiday with family (and your friends!) However, it’s also impor tant to remember that your guests will have to take time off work and spend a considerable amount of money to attend your nuptials.

Therefore, it’s essential that you let your guests know well in advance. Send out savethe-date cards with the location included, and then mail your invitations as early as possible. Within the invitation pouches, include detailed guest information sheets which will help your family and friends plan their trip. This may include the closest airpor ts, local taxi services, some accommodation options — preferably with group discounts included — as well as any relevant information regarding climate and local customs. Too much information is better than not enough, so make sure that you educate yourself North Coast WEDDINGS

THE MEETING We met through a mutual friend who played match maker at the local watering hotel, The Prince Hotel Merewether, both regulars but working different scenes. THE PROPOSAL I surprised Bec with a 4wd trip to Stockton Beach, her first sand dune adventure. I had spent time preparing a handmade woodwork sign. I nervously pulled up in front of the wreck, The Signa, blindfolded Bec and hurriedly planted my pre-prepared “Will you marry me?” sign in the sand, before handing Bec a piece of wood, on one side ‘Yes’, the other ’No’. Bec removed her blindfold to find me on one knee with a ring and asking for her hand in marriage. Thankfully, she hung her reply of “Yes” on the signpost. She saved herself a long walk home. With so many wedding favours to choose from, where do you even begin? We’ve rounded up some of the best ideas out there so you can give your guests the perfect parting gift. MADE WITH LOVE

Homemade favours are a great way to show your guests you appreciate them, and these DIY gifts don’t need to be complicated. Something useful for the home is always a valued par ting present — think tea towels, matches, infused oil, coasters, candles and scented soap. Homemade treats such as jam and cookies are sure to be crowdpleasers. If you’re famous for your brownie or cake recipe, why not package up the signature mix? A pretty tag with clear instructions adds a nice finishing touch. A breakfast box is also a thoughtful thank-you gift your guests will love. Simply include some fresh bread or pastries of your choice, your favourite spread and some tea or coffee for your friends and family to enjoy the next morning. Photos: Mel Lawrence Photography

THE MEETING Ours was a modern day meeting, through Facebook. I was living on the Gold Coast at the time and Luke in Bellingen, Our first meeting was at Boambee Headland, the following weekend Luke travelled up to the Gold Coast after that Luke started spending less time in Bellingen and more time on the Gold Coast. THE PROPOSAL There was no proposal, no engagement, no ring, it was just something that we knew we wanted to do, to share our love and our commitment to each other with our family and friends. THE CEREMONY We were married at the Gleniffer Community Church, the prefect location. I had my mother walk me down the isle, I felt very blessed having her there by my side on such a special day. We were married by the Reverend Zoe Everingham, who was absolutely lovely and made us both feel at ease in front of all our guests.

Zoey & Brandon

THE MEETING We first both met each other at high school. THE PROPOSAL It was the late afternoon on top of the hill where we are going to build our house. I got down on one knee and with our daughter as witness asked Zoey to be with me for the rest of our lives. THE CEREMONY The vows were definitely special. Brandon’s were so beautiful he had everyone in tears. When my dad saw me for the first time and walking me down the isle I think we were both as nervous as each other. THE FLOWERS I had daisies, baby’s breath and yellow roses and had a matching flower crown as I was wearing a backless dress and didn’t want a veil cover the detail in the dress.

Lucinda & Harry

THE MEETING We met at school and became an item at age 13. THE PROPOSAL Harry proposed on the beach during an afternoon picnic he planned on the day of our 100th month together. THE CEREMONY We loved our ceremony, it was outdoors just as the sun was setting, under a huge fig tree that had dream catchers hanging from it made by my mum. Our arbor was made from two old doors that my dad and I refurbished. It was connected with a piece of wood engraved with our names and twin flame symbol, which we both have as a tattoo. Our guests sat on covered hay bales and the Josh Boots Trio band (who were amazing) performed our 3 favourite songs acoustically. We wrote our own vows and included a Celtic hand binding ceremony that both our mums were a part of.

Working with my Vision We talk to a local bride about her day getting ready with Outpost Hair & Beauty Why did you decide to use Outpost Hair & Beauty? I wanted to support a local business, and I have had my hair done by Hanna in the past, so using Outpost was my first thought when deciding who to use for hair. I then found out they did makeup as well, so that was even better! What did you like about the service you received? I live in Brisbane and they made it very easy for me to organise everything that I needed via email. They were an amazing team who were able to look after myself, my 4 bridesmaids, and my mum’s hair and makeup. It was a very easeful process. They were amazing at working with my vision for my hair and I couldn’t have been happier! Did you meet with them before hand to talk about what you wanted and do a trial? Yes, I had both a hair and makeup trial about 5 weeks before the wedding. I went in there with a very vague idea of how I wanted my hair, and came out very happy that I had made the right

choice, and was happy with how it was going to look on the day. Why did you choose to have hair & makeup done at the at the venue rather than the salon? It was very important to me that I was able to have my hair and makeup done at home, to make the morning more relaxing and to be able to enjoy the pamper time with my bridesmaids and family. What tips did they give you to help you keep your style/makeup throughout the day? Because I wanted a simple and low maintenance style of hair and makeup for the day there wasn’t really much I needed to do but I did purchased the lipstick that they used, which I still have today, I just love it! Would you recommend Outpost Hair and Beauty to your friends? Yes, definitely! They are a lovely bunch of girls who made this aspect of planning and executing my wedding very easy..

Manscaping These tips will have the groom looking good and feeling great

Happily, these days it’s not all about the bride so there are plenty of services and products available to help your man look his best for the wedding. He can follow the same time line as you including professional help if he needs it for any skin issues, hair or teeth problems. If he’s willing he could indulge in a manicure and pedicure, hair removal and even a spray tan. It’s easy for men to get overlooked as we focus on the bride and you may assume your man wouldn’t be interested in getting himself tidied up, but a bit of man pampering can help to relieve his stress as well as boost his confidence. Many spas and beauty therapists offer couple treatments, so it might be nice to have a few relaxing yet purposeful treatments together. You could consider body scrubs, facials or body masks. Here’s some tips to get you started:

HAIR

Get a professional trim to ensure an even and tidy beard or goatee. Trim your beard every week leading up to your wedding to get it into great shape. There are lots of good products available for beards, so invest in products that keeps your full facial hair groomed and glossy.

Talk to your local barber or sales staff at the local chemist or depar tment store, after all they are there to help you and may even give you some free sample products to try. Similarly, a trip to the hairdresser for general maintenance including any stray nose or ear hairs is recommended. Get your haircut at least 3 weeks before the wedding then at least it has time to settle down and doesn’t have that newly cut look. Don’t be afraid to try some hairspray or gel to hold your hair in place, with photos happening all through the day at least your hair will stay in place. Trial products weeks before the day so you can see what works best on your hair. Again, don’t be afraid to visit a store and ask a consultant for advice.

SKINCARE

Star t looking after your skin at least 3 months before the wedding, that will give you time to try products and see what works for you. If you burn easily in summer don’t forget the sunscreen, no one wants to see a red sunburnt face at the alter. If you get dry flaky skin in winter get into the habit of slapping on some moisturiser when you get out of the shower. Pay special attention to your face, a good

facial cleansing product or soap is a great star t with a moisturiser to finish off, you will soon notice the difference.

HANDS & FEET

Is your fiancé always complaining how rough your hands are? Then it’s time you star t paying attention to your hands. Invest in some barrier style cream to apply before work that is purposely made to protect hands. Apply hand cream each evening and night, you can do this after a shower in private if you are self conscious. Think about a professional manicure and or pedicure a week or two before the wedding, after all your hands will be on show, not only will you notice the change but your fiancé will to. Planning and awareness of your health and beauty needs are impor tant to ensuring your confidence and vitality leading up to your wedding day. Budgeting for these kinds of treatments and extras is impor tant when you’re planning what you can spend on your wedding. With a little pampering and a good routine both bride and groom will look their best and feel their best on what will be an amazing day. North Coast WEDDINGS

Mikhayla & Jarwin

THE MEETING We met at the Coffs Hotel one night when we were both out with friends having a drink. I saw Jarwin and knew who he was through mutual friends. He tapped me on the shoulder and said “Are you Mikhayla?” and the rest is history! THE PROPOSAL Jarwin organized a surprise weekend away for us and I had no idea where we were going. I was blindfolded the entire drive which was thankfully only 30 minutes away. When we arrived and I took the blindfold off, we were in the Bellingen hinterland at a small cabin with no internet or phone reception. It was perfect. We spent the afternoon sitting on the deck, sipping champagne and eating delicious food. I heard a kangaroo and turned to look at it, when I turned back Jarwin was holding a ring box open and asked me to marry him. He said something beautiful but to be honest I can’t remember because I started crying. Needless to say I said yes! North Coast WEDDINGS

Get the best from your photographer

B

ec is the young, vibrant photographer bringing a fresh look to the North Coast wedding scene. Rebeccalynne Photography is quickly becoming one of the best options for wedding photography on the coast. We asked her to share some insight into hiring a photographer for your big day.

What should I look for when choosing a photographer for my wedding?

The most important thing is that you love their photos; that they’re amazing quality and consistent throughout past weddings. Have a look around their website and Facebook pages to see what kind of images you can expect from them. They should be friendly, relaxed and dependable. They’ll be with you all day, so you need to be comfortable around them. You can always meet up and ask them any questions before making the decision. Should we have a practise run with the photographer?

It’s a fantastic way to get to know your photographer and learn to relax in front of the camera. I absolutely love to photograph couples beforehand to get a feel for how they interact with each other, that’s why all my wedding packages

come with a free engagement shoot! How long will I need the photographer for?

Some of my favourite photos from my own wedding are of the bridal party getting ready. There’s always beautiful candid and funny moments that happen while you’re with your best friends, and I just love to capture the sense of anticipation before weddings. I would always recommend to hire somebody from the start of preparation. Will the photographer know good locations for photos?

I’ll always visit the ceremony location and surrounds in the days before your wedding to see how the sunlight is reacting with the environment, find some amazing spots, then plan a rough schedule. That said, if you have any locations that you love, and would like to get photos at, don’t hesitate to tell your photographer! What’s the best advice that you give to couples getting married?

Be in the moment. The best photos happen when you’re just being with your new husband or wife on your wedding day. Relax, and simply enjoy

each other’s company. I promise, the camera will disappear. Bec offers some of the best wedding photography and videography on the North Coast. Find her on Facebook, Instagram, or visit rebeccalynnephotography.com.au. Rebeccalynne Photography also offers exclusive wedding video packages and is proud to service all of NSW.

We chat with Yamba Golf & Country Club’s new head chef Greg Syle Where were you before YGCC? I was Head Chef at Shamrock Hotel, Bendigo Victoria for 8 years, which is a Historic Hotel with 4 food outlets, plus extensive function facilities.

Superb You have just moved to Yamba this year, food with what do you think of the area? my early adult years here, and did new chef Imyspent apprenticeship in Yamba. I have always Greg enjoyed the weather here, and the coastal Syle lifestyle. It’s a great place for families and I like the close community feel that you don’t have so much in bigger towns and cities. I’m keen to get back into golf, and lowering my handicap! My family are enjoying the warmer weather!

Tell us about your new menu? I have always been a big fan of cooking Steak and Seafood, and that is what the Club has always wanted SeaFire to focus on. Living here in Yamba allows us access to some fantastic fresh and local seafood, so I love the fact that we can have something on your plate that was in the ocean only hours before. The YGCC team and I are enjoying utilising whole fish, filleting it and using it through our specials menu which includes a daily pasta, salad, fish and vegetarian meal. This menu

changes each day and offers something for everyone. We also have some great steaks, including the Signature Eye Fillet cooked to your liking and served with wild mushroom pate, crispy prosciutto, pommes fondant and seasonal greens drizzled with port jus. It is proving to be one of our most popular dishes on the menu. YGCC has an established organic produce garden which we pick from on a daily basis, and along with the produce that we get from other local farms and suppliers, we really are delivering a very fresh, delicious, locally sourced menu. What style of food inspires you? I particularly like French and Italian cuisine and you will see some of that influence through the specials board, and also through our Wine Club menus. We will be working on changing our function menus shortly too. What do you like about YGCC so far? The golf course! And, we have a really strong functions and weddings business, so combining that with our regular dining trade has kept me busy. The team at YGCC have been very welcoming and easy to work with. SeaFire overlooks the golf course, so it’s a lovely environment to be working in everyday.

Alaina & Nathan

THE MEETING Nathan and I met at a gig. I was instantly attracted to Nathan but he needed a bit more convincing as he thought that I must have been in a relationship. Every time I started a conversation with him he, ended it quickly and walked away… Until I blatantly told him I was single. THE PROPOSAL Alaina and I were relaxing on the beach and watching the sunset over Fraser Island, when I suddenly got onto two knees (because she is so short). Alaina was so excited she took the ring from me and put it on her own finger before I even got a chance. THE CEREMONY The ceremony was held in front of an old wood shed at Mossgrove Bed and Breakfasts’ main garden. Nathan was almost crying as I came out but I couldn’t control my smile. My grandpa walked me down the aisle, a moment I had always dreamed about since I was a little girl.

MAKE A MEMORABLE STATEMENT

Create a signature cocktail

Sparkling wine, wine and beer are the standard beverages to be found at most weddings. They all have a purpose of course; celebration, matching with food, pleasing the crowd, it pretty much goes without saying that your guests will be happy with wisely selected choices. I am sure though, that most people, when planning their wedding, are looking for ways to stand out and make their celebrations exceptional, not just for themselves, but for all of their guests. More and more, brides and grooms are looking for a signature cocktail, to make a memorable statement of style. How to choose though, from the literally thousands of cocktails and variations out there? I thought it might work if I was to break it down into categories.

COLOUR:

Perhaps you have chosen a colour-related theme for your wedding, it might be reflected in bridesmaid dresses, flowers, reception table decoration. The signature cocktail could come along for the ride, colours are virtually endless, created from fruit, liqueurs, garnishes, and glassware.

BASE SPIRIT:

In cold weather, perhaps a warming spirit, like scotch, dark rum (spiced?), or cognac. To cool down and refresh, start with white rum, vodka, gin or tequila. The base spirit could also work to a theme, for instance Caribbean nights with rum, Gatsby sophistication with gin, Mexican fiesta with tequila.

METHOD:

Consider the cocktail preparation method and how that will work with your plans and budget. To provide handmade individual cocktails for a crowd can be labour intensive and expensive, but also cool and classy. Pre mixing a large batch, and pouring on demand is potentially quicker and more efficient (think fruit based punch, sangria or classic Pimms Cup). A final thought for you: if you are happy with your signature drink, and why wouldn’t you be? Make up a large batch, and provide it for your guests in small bottles, or mason jars, complete with a nice label as a memento of your special day. tips from your mid north coast wedding team Tip from your wedding hairdresser LOVELY LOCKS HAIR AND BEAUTY When it comes to your hair it needs to compliment your total look, it shouldn’t take away from the dress simply compliment it. This year has been about individuality, every bride has wanted something unique and different for them, the hair we are being asked for has texture and is definitely more fuller with volume in the style, bridal buns braids and ponytails are definitely being requested as well.

Tips from your wedding photographer JOANNE JONES PHOTOGRAPHY Meet with your wedding photographer before your big day, if possible. Ensure you are aware of each other’s hopes & expectations in order for things to run smoothly on your day. Your wedding photographer is with you for most of your wedding day, be selective. Choose based on their personal demeanour as well as your budget and artistic style preference.

Tip from your gown supplier DIVINE MOBILE BRIDAL AND FORMALWEAR Remember to look for a style/cut of a gown that will compliment your body shape and enhance your best assets and features. It’s important to be comfortable as it’s a long day and you want to enjoy every moment, not having to be worrying about adjusting your gown all day! Don’t be scared to go for something different! Add intricate detailing to make your gown stand out and give that WOW factor. Add some colour, a detailed neckline or a low back. Pick one area of your gown to change it up and make it pop!

Tip from your wedding florist GLASSHOUSE FLOWERS BY DESIGN Whether you are choosing a bouquet of all the same blooms or a mix of a dozen different varieties, try to choose flowers that are in season and readily available. Choose a colour, theme or style, bring in some images of bouquets and arrangements that resonate with you, but allow some flexibility. There is nothing more stressful than having your heart set on Peony Roses (for instance) and then finding out the season finished a week early due to bad weather. Trust in your florist to create something gorgeous based on your vision, colours and style.

Create your perfect beachside wedding day Planning my reception was simple, Nicole was able to meet with me and made it so easy for me to put the entire day together from designing the look I wanted at the reception, to the menu and even finding me a local cake designer who was amazing. What inspired you choose Surf Club Restaurant & Bar as your wedding reception venue?

How did you feel about having your special day filmed for a television commercial? Do you feel famous?

I was at the surf club and saw how well the space transformed. I was completely blown away at the change from everyday to how it all comes together. I would most definitely add the food is what brings me back every time.

I was honoured that I would even be considered. I love seeing the ad on tv. It’s amazing to be able to relive the moment each time I see the ad. It’s also so nice to be able to share this beautiful spot with future brides.

What was the highlight of your night?

Where did you go for your honeymoon?

The service and seeing how amazing the room was as I walked in. Everything was perfect.

We spent 10 magical days in Thailand, can’t wait to revisit on our first wedding anniversary.

What was your reaction when you saw the Love Letters and the wisteria ceiling?

What do you love about Coffs Harbour?

North Coast WEDDINGS

What’s not to love, we have the most amazing beaches that are not over crowed and I love the country feel to the area and that people are always up for a chat. My favourite saying in Coffs is, I’m on Coffs Harbour time.

Photo: Mike and Amy

I was blown away at how they made such an impact in the room and the Love Letters were such a feature. Everyone made comments on how gorgeous they look on the sand dunes.

The finishing touch ...

THE OBSERVATORY HOTEL Friends, family, flowers, reception, speeches, honeymoon – check! But one essential remained to make Jess’ and James’ wedding complete: where to recommend for guests travelling from afar, where to stay to prepare for the big day ... and where the couple would spend their first night as newlyweds before jetting off to the South Pacific. Jess: James and I grew up in the Por t Macquarie area but we’ve made our lives and careers in the city. Naturally, we wanted to be married “at home” for the sake of our families still living locally, but we needed to cater for our friends visiting from out of town. James: The Observatory Hotel has the best, most scenic location – “Por t Macquarie’s best address” they call it – and provided a choice of accommodation from budget-priced hotel rooms for one or two, to two- and three-

North Coast WEDDINGS

bedroom self-catering apar tments. They offer special rates for wedding groups. Jess: We chose the penthouse for my bridesmaids and me the night before the wedding: it has space for six guests. Then, while we were at the ceremony the hotel completely refreshed all of the rooms and James and I spent our wedding night there. Being in the penthouse made us feel exclusive, private and pampered with the very best. Amazing views out over the ocean and the sound of the waves on the shore we’ll remember forever!

The Observatory’s Weddings Coordinator Jenna says: We aim to ensure our couples and their wedding guests enjoy the happiest of days. Jess and James are typical of our couples from out of town: needing somewhere reliable for guests to stay, and help with arrangements on the ground. We arrange accommodation to suit everyone, offer special rates for groups, make bookings for pre-wedding pampering in endota spa (on our ground floor) and advise on any general questions couples need answered. Even on cool days, we have our magnificent heated indoor swimming pool, spa and sauna and we’re at the centre of some awesome foodie experiences. Por t Macquarie has daily flights between Sydney and Brisbane, the perfect halfway point on the east coast. Visit obersvatory.net.au or call 02 6586 8000.

Located on one of the NSW Mid North Coast’s most spectacular beaches, Surf Club Restaurant & Bar is the perfect location for your wedding reception. With a range of stunning natural settings for your ceremony and photos, you will enjoy exclusive use of the Surf Club on your special day. Owners Nicole and Matt will look after every detail so you can relax and enjoy the personalised service from the time you book until the very last moment of your celebration.
