Making a sustainable impact in Kenya is a dream more than twenty years in the making. When Noonday Collection Founder Jessica Honegger traveled to Kenya at age 15, she saw poverty for the first time – but she also saw the power of opportunity. Jessica met a woman who used a microcredit loan to launch a thriving fruit stand in the middle of the Kibera slums. The vision of a powerful woman running her own small business inspired Jessica and ultimately catalyzed the launch of Noonday Collection. This season, the story comes full circle as we partner with new artisan businesses in Kenya to bring you four exclusive styles. Our Kenya collection features vivid Turkana beads and elegant brass crafted by talented Artisans living in Nairobi. One of our artisan partners in Kenya is Joseph. Joseph grew up in a Nairobi slum where economic opportunities were scarce. Joseph’s life changed for good when a nun working in the slum saw Joseph’s potential and gave him the opportunity to receive training as a metalworker. Joseph soon turned this opportunity into a passion for creating beautiful jewelry using traditional techniques. For over 30 years, Joseph has dedicated himself to using what he has been given to create opportunities for others. Today his metalworking business employs nine Artisans from the slums, four of whom are women.
As our design team began dreaming up new designs for our Kenyan partners, they found inspiration in the markets of Nairobi. Inspired by the quality and style of the pieces they discovered, our designers collaborated with Kenyan Artisans to create two effortlessly modern cuffs. The artisan business behind the cuffs focuses on employing Artisans living in vulnerable areas of Nairobi. Through dignified work, the business is transforming lives – and sharing a cultural heritage with the world.

To make the cuffs, the Artisans start by crafting identical molds made from sand and molasses. Their process ensures that each cuff is consistent and beautiful. After making an impression in the mold using an existing cuff, they pour in molten brass.

When the brass cools, the Artisans hammer, buff and polish each cuff by hand. To add texture, they use a ball-peen hammer to make gentle impressions. The result is an exquisitely crafted accessory that will elevate any arm party.

We don’t just collaborate with Artisans across the globe to create our collection – we also love partnering with local artists here in the US! Leah Duncan is an Austin-based artist and designer known for her quirky textiles, stationery and home goods. This season, we collaborated with Leah to design two special scarves. “I was excited about this collaboration because I love Noonday’s aesthetic and the opportunity to work with Artisans around the world,” Leah shared.
For Leah, having her designs interpreted by Artisans in India was a special experience. “I think the scarves we received back from the Artisans turned out beautifully,” she said. “I was excited to see my work translated to work for them. It’s a win–win for a great purpose!”

When I invited my community to the first Noonday Trunk Show, I seriously didn’t think anyone would show up and I definitely didn’t know it would turn into a business. But people did come – and they brought their friends! I realized that we all want to be part of something bigger than ourselves. Sometimes we just need to find the courage to say ‘yes’. I believe that practicing courage means moving forward even when we don’t know what the outcome will be. Five years ago I connected with Jalia, Noonday’s first artisan partner in Uganda. Though we both dreamed of creating opportunities for others, we couldn’t do it alone. Connecting with both Jalia and women in my community gave me the courage to grow Noonday into a business that would empower women across the globe. These same connections gave Jalia the courage to build a business that would go on to impact hundreds in her community. But the story doesn’t end there, because courage is contagious! And in the Noonday community, I see courage spreading every day.
The Noonday community has grown to more than 1,000 Ambassadors – and thousands more women who have gathered at Trunk Shows. Everyone who has linked arms with me over the last few years has encouraged me that, together, we really can change the world. I see Ambassadors practicing courage when they launch their own businesses. I see Hostesses practicing courage when they invite others to a Trunk Show. I see Artisans practicing courage when they stand up for the rights of women in places where those rights are at risk. When women come together, we can spark courage in one another. And when we are courageous, we can change the world! Though Ana grew up in a village in Guatemala where jobs were scarce, her family worked hard to send to her to school. This opportunity gave her the courage to dream of how she could make an impact in her village. She launched an artisan business that creates dignified jobs for women by harnessing traditional weaving techniques. Now Ana’s business is thriving, and so are families in her community. Melissa met Ana on an Ambassador trip to Guatemala – but it was another trip that launched her Ambassador career. “After traveling to Ethiopia for a mission trip, I prayed that God would help me use my gifts for others,” Melissa reflected. “The Ambassador Opportunity has been an answer to that prayer.”
“ Knowing that we have these women as partners motivates us to dream bigger. And achieving those dreams is better when we do it together.” Hearing Ana’s story of courage face-to-face has empowered Melissa to be a bold advocate. “I want my two daughters to see me put my insecurities aside and use my gifts for good,” Melissa said. “I love telling them how Ana didn’t let her gifts go to waste. For Laura, being a Noonday Ambassador isn’t just about making an impact. It’s also about expanding her definition of community. After a short time as an Ambassador, Laura realized that most of her Trunk Show Hostesses were people she already knew well. And while she loved having the support of her immediate community, Laura wanted to dream bigger: “I wanted to get out of my church walls – for myself and my business.” When Laura met Tasha, she knew right away that Tasha was a bridge-builder, someone who could help women of varied backgrounds find common ground. In Tasha, Laura found a friend and supporter who shared her passion for bringing diverse groups of people together. Tasha connected with Noonday’s mission immediately. “I’ve done work fighting human trafficking so I’m all about creating economic opportunities for women and families that make them less vulnerable,” she said. According to Tasha, what makes Noonday special is the relational nature of the business. “Trunk Shows help break down barriers,” she said. “Inviting someone into your home can feel awkward, but Trunk Shows give you an excuse to reach out. It’s harnessing things we all love – feeling stylish and making an impact – to bring people together.”

Better Together MEET JOLENE AND HER TEAM OF
WORLD CHANGING AMBASSADORS
Noonday Ambassadors have the opportunity to become Coaches – leaders who inspire others to make an impact in their communities and around the world. Each Coach develops her team of Ambassadors through mentoring, training and personal support. Jolene loves setting the bar high for the Ambassadors she coaches. Last summer, she challenged her team with a goal that she knew would stretch all of them: “I let my team know that if we could work together and hit this goal, drinks would be on me – and they pulled it off!” Some of Jolene’s team members traveled two hours to join the celebration. Jolene loves how the Coaching Opportunity has given all of the women on her team the chance to encourage and challenge one another to be powerful advocates for Noonday’s artisan partners. Jonna is a new Ambassador with three young children. “Being able to connect with other women in a way that is fun and on my own schedule is great,” she said. “The idea of women supporting women in business is incredible and inspires me every day.”

What initially drew Flo to Noonday was the idea that women were able to earn a dignified living, all while making gorgeous jewelry. “I love being part of a team,” she shared. “We encourage one another on a daily basis – from fun celebrations to the daily Voxer chat we can’t live without!” Lisa grew up on a fifth generation dairy farm. “Many of the artisan groups we work with use skills that have been passed down through generations – just like in my family,” she shared. “The connections I’ve formed through Noonday – across the globe and as part of this team – have been amazing.” “I have a social work degree and had been a stay at home mom for 12 years, and was feeling called to something new,” Ashley shared. As a new Ambassador, she feels that the connections with her team have changed her life: “I know I can always turn to them. Whenever I have a success, I immediately think, ‘I have to tell the girls!’” Megan became an Ambassador in June 2014, a year after bringing her adopted daughter home from Ethiopia. Today she loves partnering with other women to create opportunities in her daughter’s birth-country and beyond. “Noonday brought our team together,” Megan said. “We have the same heartbeat – and that has created amazing friendships.”

“I became determined to befriend at least one of these vulnerable women.” CHERRY Cherry is a courageous woman determined to make a difference in the lives of vulnerable women in Ethiopia. When she discovered that there were over 100,000 women working in prostitution in her city of Addis Ababa, Cherry decided that even if she couldn’t make a difference for all of these women, she could begin by making a difference for just one. “I became determined to befriend at least one of these vulnerable women,” Cherry said. “So one night I gathered my courage, found a woman working on the street and asked if I could buy her a cup of coffee.” The woman was skeptical of this unexpected act of friendship, but Cherry returned each week to spend time with her. Eventually the woman began to trust Cherry and told her friends about this strange but kind woman who wanted to take women on the streets out for coffee. Soon Cherry developed friendships with dozens of women. “A lot of the women had been trafficked domestically as children,” Cherry recalled. “They didn’t think there were other options for them.” After hearing their stories of
desperation, Cherry realized that the most meaningful way she could help was to create economic alternatives that would enable the women to care for their families through dignified work. From a connection with one woman in need, Cherry found the courage to become an advocate and friend to many. She launched an organization that provides artisan training and counseling to vulnerable women, empowering them to begin new lives. The women entering the program learn job skills that will enable them to find dignified jobs and provide for their children. They also attend classes on healthy cooking, parenting and housekeeping – essential skills that enable their families to thrive. After they complete the program, Cherry helps the women find good jobs – sometimes with one of the organization’s own artisan businesses. Two years ago, Noonday partnered with Cherry to launch a new jewelry-making group. Since then, we’ve spent time on the ground in Ethiopia training these women and helping them grow their business. Today, the women in this group create some of Noonday’s most beloved artillery styles!

When Courage Becomes Contagious M o o n + s u n i ta
As the daughter of one of the founders of the fair trade movement, Moon grew up surrounded by people passionate about equality and justice. “Many young girls in India are taught to believe that they have little value outside the home,” Moon said, ”but my father always told me I could do anything.” Moon went on to take over her father’s fair trade business, an amazing feat for a woman in India. She has created dignified jobs for hundreds of women, including Sunita. Moon is passionate not just about job creation, but about pursuing justice for India’s women – empowering them to become leaders. Sunita is one of the women who has flourished under Moon’s mentorship – but her life once looked very different. When Sunita gave birth to her daughter Vandana at 17, she had been married for three years to a husband who abused her. “I knew that if something didn’t change, my daughter would face the same fate,” Sunita shared. When Sunita connected with Moon and began working as an Artisan, everything shifted. As she became confident in her own worth, her husband began to see her worth too. Moon’s courage has sparked a courage in Sunita that is contagious. Today she empowers other women to stand up to abuse and recognize their true value. Behind her unwavering smile, Sunita is a force to be reckoned with.

Ambassador Susan and Hostess Marcedes met nearly six years ago at the drug and alcohol treatment program where they both work. When Marcedes attended one of Susan’s Trunk Shows, she fell in love with the style and story of the pieces. She decided right then that she had to host her own show!
“Because Noonday is partnering with these women who are vulnerable to poverty and abuse, they are earning a sustainable income for their families,” Marcedes said. “I am passionate about empowering women to use their God-given talents to be successful in life.”
Marcedes is an RN at the organization’s women’s recovery program. The program primarily serves pregnant women and women with children, many of whom have experienced abuse. In her position, Marcedes loves having the opportunity to extend compassion to women in vulnerable situations. She immediately connected with Noonday’s mission to empower women around the world through dignified work.
Susan says that passionate Hostesses like Marcedes are a beautiful source of inspiration: “They are a great reminder of why I do what I do! It’s so encouraging when Hostesses are truly excited about gathering their friends to make a difference, as only they can. It’s a perfect example of women empowering women.”

Luis always harbored big ambitions, even when he and his wife Marina struggled in poverty. In Ecuador, many parents have to work abroad to support their families. Determined to help families stay together, Luis dreamed of starting a business that would create work for local Artisans. Marina worried she didn’t have what it took to launch a business, but her belief in Luis’ vision gave her the courage to say ‘yes’. Today Luis and Marina lead a business that is creating jobs in their community, empowering moms and dads to care for their children. When Elizabeth met Marina on an Ambassador trip, she was struck by her determination in the face of risk. “My husband has always aspired to be an entrepreneur too,” Elizabeth shared. “I understood what it meant for Marina to say yes to an uncertain dream for her family’s sake.” Elizabeth says she thinks of Marina often as she shares Noonday’s vision with others. “Her gentle spirit and courage continue to inspire me.” NEW!
