Brandon Ball The Fort Hays State junior was named MIAA wrestler of the week on Dec. 4 after winning the Bob Smith Open at 141 pounds the week before. Brown, ranked No. 4 nationally, went 4-0 in the tournament at FHSU, beating Arkansas-Little Rock’s Conner Ward with D GHFLVLRQ LQ WKH ÆQDO It was his 12th individual tournament title as a Tiger. The Hoisington product started the season 8-0.

Tatyana Legette The Fort Hays State senior forward was the MIAA women’s basketball athlete of the week for Dec. 10 after posting two double-doubles the week before. She had a season-high 23 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in a 62-53 win over Nebraska-Kearney. She then went for 15 points and 10 boards to help FHSU take an 84-74 win over No. 24 Emporia State. The senior from Topeka was averaging a team-best 12.8 points and 9 rebounds through the 7LJHUV½ ÆUVW HLJKW JDPHV KHOSLQJ )RUW Hays earn a No. 6 national ranking.

Ethan Peterson The senior running back/defensive back was one of the main catalyst on Smith Center’s Class 1A state championship team. Peterson led the Redmen with 1,348 yards on the ground and scored 18 times. He averaged 103.7 yards per contest and had seven games of 100-plus yards. He scored three or more touchdowns three times, including notching three TDs in the title game against Olpe, a 59-0 win.

Savannah Schneider The Hays High senior helped the Indian girls basketball team get off to a strong start, scoring 21 points in a season-opening 79-44 win over Great Bend. Schneider also scored 17 points to help Hays High edge Colby 47-44 on the road. Schneider is adding 4.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. She is also a standout soccer player for the Indians.






The Smith Center and Phillipsburg High School football teams represented the Mid-Continent League in 2018 with state titles in Class 2A and 1A respectively, combining for just one loss. Photos by NICK McQueen, Jolie Green and Jacque Bretton.
