Helen Giefer The Trego senior won a Class 2A cross country state championship on Oct. 27 LQ :DPHJR 6KH ÆQLVKHG the course in 19:30, leading the Trego girls WR D VHFRQG SODFH ÆQLVK as a team. Giefer won a state championship in track last spring in Wichita, claiming the 3,200-meter run.

Tanner Copeland The Plainville senior made a 37-yard ÆHOG JRDO ZLWK VHFonds left against Ell-Saline on Nov. 2, sending the Cardinals to a 31-28 victory in the Class 1A regional round. Copeland PDGH HLJKW ÆHOG JRDOV RQ the season and connected RQ RI H[WUD SRLQW DWtempts. He also had 25 receptions for 290 yards and three touchdowns heading into the sub-state round.

Gracen Hutchinson The Smith Center senior helped the Lady Red claim third place in the Class 2A volleyball tournament on Oct. 26-27. Hutchinson was named ÆUVW WHDP RQ WKH $ .DQsas Volleyball Association All-State team and was DOVR D ÆUVW WHDP &ODVV 2A tournament selection. 6KH DOVR HDUQHG ÆUVW WHDP recognition on the All-Mid Continent League team and helped the Lady Red go 39-6 on the season.

SANTIAGO AGUDELO The junior Fort Hays State men’s soccer player was named MIAA player of the year after rewriting the FHSU record book. Heading into the UHJLRQDO ÆQDO DJDLQVW Northeastern State, Agudelo had notched 26 goals, 99 shots, 56 shots on goal and eight game-winning goals. He led the nation in points SHU PDWFK WRWDO SRLQWV goals per match (1.53), total goals (26), game-winning goals (eight), shots per match (5.82) and shots on goal per match (3.29).


Coming out of Hoxie High School as a four-time champion, Carly Heim was used to winning games. It’s no coincidence the Tigers are doing it too.





The Thomas More Prep-Marian/Ellis boys’ soccer team made school history this season, reaching the state time. The Monarchs got it done with a thrilling 1-0 victory against Topeka-Hayden on Oct. 30 at the FHSU Soccer Stadium. Photos by NICK McQueen
