Room to breathe in The South Hams Let’s be honest, it’s been a tough year globally, but even in lockdown here in the South Hams we have been able to enjoy all it has to offer, living in this breath-taking area with its wonderful coastal walks and long stretches of beaches to keep our minds positive and our souls uplifted. Since the first lock down the property market has gone wild with many people running from larger cities to find a safe haven in beautiful Devon. Professionals with young children realising working from home will be the new norm, want space for home offices and those not wanting to visit their holiday homes abroad, are looking for that idyllic property near water to spend their weekends and holidays. When the housing market remerged in May everyone wondered if the property market would recover and whether the requirements to wear PPE would dampen the market but indeed it didn’t. By early June even more people were wanting to move, that coupled with the stamp duty holiday meant there was increased eagerness. This eagerness is continuing and as a result we have seen a record year of selling property in the South Hams. On average our Prime Waterfront & Country House Department sell 70 houses a year over a million pounds but this year they have agreed sales on over 90 and that is with 2 months of working from home – incredible results.

Landscove in Winter: Marchand Petit stock photography

But we must also remain realistic at some stage the market will turn but until then it’s all systems go. At Marchand Petit we remain positive that the demand for property during 2021 will continue in the South Hams area and our team of property experts are there to help and answer any questions you might have, be it regarding the market, marketing properties or talking through virtual tours. We are here to help and make your housing dreams for 2021 come true!

Seaweed-deep-fried plaice with brown crab mayonnaise and lemon This was the last dish I cooked on the road trip and it was probably the one I was looking forward to the most. The crew didn’t make it easy for me, perched on a rock face overlooking Padstow and Rock, but it seemed the right place to cook it, mainly because I had access to incredible fish and the dried dulse seaweed that works as a seasoning in this batter. Using the brown crab meat in the mayo is something I do back in the restaurant; it’s easier to make there, too, but with the help of my mate and great cook Paul Ainsworth, this was one of my and the filmcrew’s favourites.

SERVES 3

Method

6 plaice fillets 1–2 litres vegetable oil, for deep-frying 1 lemon, cut into 6 wedges

Start by making the mayonnaise. Whisk the egg yolks and Dijon mustard together in a large bowl until smooth. Slowly pour the vegetable oil into the bowl, starting with a little drizzle and whisking well. This is easiest to do with an electric hand whisk. Continue to drizzle in the remaining oil, whisking all the time, until the mixture has thickened. Stir in the brown crab meat and lemon juice and season to taste.

For the batter 250g plain flour 1 tablespoon bicarbonate of soda 1 ⁄2 teaspoon sea salt 1 tablespoon dulse seaweed powder 250ml sparkling water For the mayonnaise 3 egg yolks 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 200ml vegetable oil 100g brown crab meat 1 juice of ⁄2 lemon sea salt and freshly ground

Heat the vegetable oil in a deep-fat fryer to 180°C (350°F) or in a deep, heavy-based saucepan until a breadcrumb sizzles and turns brown when dropped into it. (Note: hot oil can be dangerous; do not leave unattended.) Line a plate or tray with kitchen paper. Sift the flour, bicarbonate of soda and salt into a large bowl. Stir in the seaweed then slowly pour in the sparkling water, whisking well until you have a smooth batter. Lower 3 of the fish fillets into the batter and toss to coat, making sure they’re completely covered, then use tongs to lift them out and carefully lower them into the hot oil. Cook for 2 minutes, until golden and crispy, then lift onto the kitchen paper and season with salt. Batter and fry the remaining fish. Spoon the mayonnaise into a bowl and serve 2 fish fillets and 2 lemon wedges per person.

Bread and butter pudding with cherry compote The keys to a great bread and butter pudding have to be the egg and egg yolk combo, the cooking time and temperature of the oven. Too many eggs and it tastes eggy, too hot an oven and the mix will soufflé and split, too long in the oven and it will be too firm. When made right, it’s a great dessert and one that should be on menus around the country. By the way, Paul Ainsworth doesn’t make a bad one at Number 6 in Padstow.

Method Preheat the oven to 150°C (130°C fan)/300°F/gas 2. Butter each slice of bread on one side only, then cut off the crusts. Slice each piece in half diagonally to make 2 triangles. Lay them in a 30 x 20cm ovenproof dish, overlapping each slice as you go. To make the custard, put the eggs and egg yolks into a large bowl and add the sugar and vanilla bean paste. Whisk together to break down the eggs then pour in the milk and cream and continue to whisk

SERVES 6

until smooth. Pour as much of the mixture over the bread as possible to cover and set aside to soak for

100g butter, at room temperature 1 loaf medium-sliced white bread 4 eggs 8 egg yolks 200g caster sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste 300ml milk 300ml double cream 2 tablespoons icing sugar

all of it has been poured into the dish. Transfer to the oven and bake for 35–40 minutes. The pudding should be bubbling hot but not necessarily golden brown. To make the compote, put the cherries and sugar into a saucepan. Heat gently to dissolve the sugar then bring to the boil and simmer for 10 minutes. Allow to cool slightly and pour into a bowl. Dust the bread and butter pudding with the icing sugar and use a blow torch to caramelise the sugar

For the compote 200g cherries, pitted 50g caster sugar

or place it under a hot grill for a couple of minutes. Spoon into bowls and serve with the compote alongside.

Holiday letting: A changing landscape With demand for UK staycations at an all-time high, Jon Doyle, Managing Director at Salcombe and Dartmouth based Coast & Country Cottages takes a look at trends in the self-catering holiday market, and at what makes a holiday home stand out from the crowd. 2019 was a year of change with unprecedented positive results for us at Coast & Country Cottages. On a logistical level it was our first full year as part of the Sykes Cottages group, following their acquisition of our business in August 2018. This meant exciting changes for our locally based team in everything from booking software to marketing spend. In the months following the move, demand for South Devon holiday homes grew exponentially. Indeed, the 2019 season finished as record breaking for our agency, with bookings 50% up year on year! Holiday trends But what has driven this growth in bookings? Of course Brexit, the election and general uncertainty have played their part in booking figures, and the lean towards holidaying closer to home can be attributed to this in part. The change can also be related to the rise in popularity of short breaks – according to VisitBritain, the average Brit now expects to take three breaks in the UK every year! This move away from the traditional one-week summer holiday is having a positive impact on figures. There has also been a notable increase in couples holidays. Last year 41% of our bookings were from couples looking for romantic breaks. With an

increasing awareness of environmental issues, South Devon presents a desirable ‘no fly’ alternative to European holiday destinations, particularly for weekend getaways. Similarly, there has been a rise in bookings for dogfriendly cottages. In one in three UK holidays dogs now come too, with the biggest demand coming for luxury, high-end pet-friendly holiday homes. YouGov estimates that the pet dog population is now at 9.9 million, with 26% of the UK adult population owning a dog, meaning demand for dog-friendly holidays in the UK looks set to continue growing. South Devon is particularly attractive to dog owners, as the area offers miles of walking opportunities, dog-friendly eateries, beaches and attractions. Desirable holiday homes Whilst environmental, political and cultural factors are all contributing to the heightened demand we are seeing, the increase in bookings is also about how successful properties are at targeting customers. With a vast choice of holiday properties in the region, individual homes need to stand out from the crowd – something our cottages do exceptionally well. This, coupled with our fantastic regional and national marketing exposure, is providing excellent results.

FEATURE • 061

Properties currently doing best are those that take into consideration trends like the growth in the ‘couples’ and ‘dog-friendly’ market. Dogfriendly romantic retreats are booking like hot cakes! Being pet-friendly extends a property’s seasonal appeal too… very often couples with dogs look to visit at off peak times for a walking getaway or winter recharge. This is a wonderful way for owners to maximise booking potential. Equally those that appeal to a variety of customers choosing to holiday together are performing well, for instance homes for multi-generational families with multiple living areas, or properties that offer zip and link beds to provide a variety of bedding configurations. For that added something, many properties employ marketing initiatives like welcome hampers or cakes on arrival, which draw in both first time bookers and repeat customers. Those cottages with added extras like log burners, smart TVs or even hot tubs are also proving popular. In a time of changing expectations, discerning customers expect much more than a comfy bed… it’s about creating an unforgettable overall experience

We now have the advantage of combining our knowledge of the local area and passion for holidays, with the marketing budget and support of a national agency - a recipe for success! Range Rover Fifty 074 • FEATURE

Range Rover marks 50 years of all-terrain innovation and luxury with exclusive new limited edition.

Range Rover celebrates 50 years of pioneering innovation, peerless refinement and unparalleled all-terrain capability with the introduction of the new Range Rover Fifty. The original luxury SUV has defined the market since 17 June 1970 and, five decades on, the Range Rover has evolved to become a family of desirable and capable luxury vehicles. Its compelling blend of design, refinement and engineering innovation has ensured its place as the benchmark for all luxury SUVs. Over its 50 year lifespan, the Range Rover has achieved many world firsts and completed numerous impressive feats. It was the first SUV to feature a permanent 4WD system when it was

launched, and in 1989 was the world's first 4x4 to be fitted with ABS anti-lock brakes. Later in 1992 it became the world's first 4x4 to be fitted with electronic traction control (ETC) and automatic electronic air suspension – ensuring the refined driving feel Range Rover is so famous for, both on and off-road. In 2012, the latest generation Range Rover became the world’s first SUV to feature an all-aluminium lightweight construction, making it lighter, stronger and more efficient. It has crossed the notoriously impassable ‘Darien Gap,’ was the first vehicle to ever be displayed at the Louvre Museum in Paris, and has even won the Paris-Dakar rally – twice. No other vehicle combines the levels of luxury, comfort and sophistication with off-road capability and on-road performance like Range Rover.

FEATURE • 075

With its clamshell bonnet, distinctive floating roof, split tailgate and trademark front fender vents, the Range Rover of today can still trace its roots back to the 1970 original. In its golden anniversary year it is now the most efficient, connected, luxurious and capable yet.

Range Rover Fifty in one of three Heritage exterior solid paints reproduced from the original Range Rover paint palette; Tuscan Blue, Bahama Gold and Davos White. A range of powertrain options will be available; petrol, diesel and plugin hybrid P400e version.

To celebrate 50 years of a motoring icon, the limited-run Range Rover Fifty will be restricted to just 1,970 vehicles globally, in recognition of the year the original Range Rover was launched. Building on the luxuriously appointed Autobiography, the Range Rover Fifty features a number of bespoke exterior accents in Auric Atlas as well as two unique 22-inch wheel designs. The badging features a ‘Fifty’ script created personally by Prof Gerry McGovern OBE, Land Rover’s Chief Creative Officer, which will appear on the exterior of the vehicle and throughout the interior on the unique “1 of 1970” centre console commissioning plaque, headrests, dashboard and illuminated treadplates.

Now in its fourth generation with over a million sold in its lifetime, the Range Rover is the ultimate expression of luxury. It’s unmistakable, sophisticated design and class-leading all-terrain capability has ensured the Range Rover is as peerless and relevant today as it was in 1970.

Prof Gerry McGovern OBE, Land Rover Chief Creative Officer, said: “In the world of luxury vehicles, the Range Rover has always stood apart as peerless and enduring. Its unique and pioneering sensibilities together with an unrivalled engineering approach have been the intrinsic values which our customers have admired since the first of the breed was revealed in 1970.”

The Range Rover Family After three decades at the top of the luxury SUV sector, the Range Rover became a family in 2005 with the launch of the Range Rover Sport, a vehicle which combines the luxury and capability of the larger Range Rover with a sporty and engaging driving character. In 2010, the compact Range Rover Evoque made its debut, aimed at a younger and more urban customer base. In 2017, the family grew once again with the introduction of the Range Rover Velar, filling the space between the Range Rover Sport and Range Rover Evoque. Taking its name from the first Range Rover prototypes, the Range Rover Velar broadened the Range Rover portfolio with a statement reductionist design and a technology-rich interior.

The Range Rover Fifty will be available in both standard and long wheelbase body designs with customers able to choose from four carefully curated exterior colours; Carpathian Grey, Rosello Red, Aruba, and Santorini Black. In extremely limited numbers, Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations is also offering the

Painting the town red Red Propeller landed in Kingsbridge in 2006 when Sarah & David Anslow decided that their love and passion for art could become a great base for a business. Before they knew it they were contacting artists they loved and they were agreeing to show their work alongside them in Red Propeller Gallery. We went looking for a small shop to call our own, and we soon fell in love with a wonky shop, The Shambles, at the top of town in Kingsbridge which became our original flagship gallery space, where we could show our art and meet other like minded people. From there the next logical step was to create a website to sell the art. Over the next couple of years the urban art scene grew exponentially and the website sales and visits along with it. Substantially helped along by some genius PR stunts one of which involving selling a Banksy with the house it was attached to being thrown in for free. As they grew their small gallery space could no longer cope with their turnover and ambition so by 2008 they decided to close doors and move to larger premises in a nearby rural location concentrating their time to their expanding online business and welcoming visitors by appointment.

Fore Street is simply thriving since lockdown relaxed in the last few months it is defying all the predictions and fast becoming a really vibrant & interesting place to head for with seven new independent shops opening recently making it one of the most interesting arts & antiques destinations in the South Hams right now. With their backgrounds in art and design David & Sarah have always had an eye for unusual art, often finding themselves browsing galleries and art fairs buying art to fill their home - it’s a passion and in the middle of a worldwide pandemic it feels like a good time for Red Propeller to return - real art for unreal times!

However, after 6 years in the ‘wonderness’ they missed the fun of regularly hanging art on the walls, meeting people and showcasing a dynamic ever changing window of art on the high street - so with their studios hidden away in a beautiful, rural idyll they continue to pop up in Kingsbridge (last time for 4 years!) creating a cultural buzz whenever they do. And here they are back again in 2020 welcoming Tom McMahon to the team.

Open: Thursday - Saturday 10am - 4.30pm and always by appointment. Red Propeller Gallery, 76 Fore St, Kingsbridge, Devon, TQ7 1PP | Tel: 07525 338233 | info@redpropellergallery.co.uk www.redpropeller.co.uk

Teamwork makes the dreamwork in Salcombe Marchand Petit Salcombe is delighted to welcome back Victoria Lambden as Branch Manager.

surrounding areas. With some properties achieving up to 20% over their guide prices, due to competitive situations arising. It’s been a fantastic first few months and we are confident that throughout the second lockdown we will do everything we can to ensure we keep all our properties on track to help chive the best outcomes for our buyers and sellers.” But it’s not all about the professional side of the team that gets a sale agreed. Victoria and the team work closely with their clients to ensure their homes are presented well and offer advice that will make a difference in helping to find a suitable buyer and achieve the best price possi-ble in the current market. The sellers will help the team to ensure their homes are beautiful and looking their best for photos and where possible for viewings too. Victoria commented;

After a highly successful 23 years in Salcombe, Marchand Petit continues to be one of the lead-ing agents, Victoria Lambden, has come back ‘home’ as Branch Manager, after working for the Salcombe branch previously as a Sales Negotiator, years later after running her own successful agency she is excited to join the company again and take over the reins from her predecessor. Victoria commented; “Having worked within the industry since 2004, including nearly 5 years in Salcombe, I am now heading up the team. Not only is the team flourishing, but it is also expanding with a recent addition in the form of Chloe Inch, who is born and bred in Salcombe and joins the team as a trainee, excited to learn and showing fantastic talent. With approximately 50 years’ joint experience across the team within Estate Agency, there is not much that we haven’t overcome. Having had 3 years of Brexit, followed by 3 months of lockdown, the market is booming, and with a low supply of homes on the market but a huge demand, sellers are reaping the rewards of Marchand Petits winning formulas for achieving record prices within Salcombe and the

“As many will probably know, finding a home is the easy part of the moving-home process, and that the fun and games begin when the legal and financial procedures begin. However, with the Salcombe teams’ local knowledge and experience, and often working with local solicitors this provides a winning combination to ensure that any hiccups along the way are resolved prompt-ly, and even in these unusual times that we are presently in, solicitors working from home etc, sales are still moving to exchange quickly for most cash buyers, a little longer if finance is required.” Working alongside the Salcombe team is the Prime Waterfront and Country House Department headed up by Director, Prunella Martin. Together with the office across the South Hams, they have agreed nearly 70% of sales over the past 5 years of homes over £750,000. This isn’t done by luck! Pure love for the job mixed with knowledge and experience gets these results, with many ‘million-pound’ homes being agreed confidentially. Intrigued to know how Victoria and her team can help you, now or sometime in the future, give them a call on 01548 844473, or email salcombe@marchandpetit.co.uk
