elvin Dick grew up on a farm in South Dakota, where he attended college before he and his wife Claudia moved several times—from South Dakota to Milwaukee and then Denver—before discovering their North Idaho home. The couple fell in love with Sandpoint’s small-town charm and the beauty and offerings of North Idaho, and moved here in 2002. Chances are you’ve run into Mel downtown, whether it’s at one of his businesses (he’s the coowner of some Sandpoint favorites like the 219) or at one of the various community organizations he is actively involved in. In his free time, you’ll find him bike riding, hiking, and spending time with his family and friends—in 2020 he even rode his bike 5,000 miles cross-country from Sandpoint to Key West to raise money for youth services in Sandpoint, a story well worth the listen if you get the chance. Q. What do you love most about this town? A. I love the small-town atmosphere of Sandpoint. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming. We have a very "giving" community that supports each other. The town has a mountain resort kind of feel to it that we really like, but at the same time it has more than just being a resort or mountain ski town. We grew up in a small town, Sandpoint is quite a bit bigger than where we grew up, [but] it reminded us a lot of the small-town atmosphere. Q. In what ways are you involved in the community, and what inspires you to give back and be a part of making our community strong? A. Over the years I have been involved in several different community organizations including The Panhandle Alliance for Education, The Chamber of Commerce and the Sandpoint Rotary Club. I believe the strength of any community starts with good schools and quality health care. Sandpoint excels in both areas. Our public and private education ranks with the

best, and our doctors, dentists and health care facilities provide excellent care, on par or better than any major city we have lived in. I'm inspired by the actions of others in the community, many who give tirelessly to help others and to make Sandpoint the incredible place it is today. Q. What are you most excited to see happen in the future for Sandpoint, and how do you hope to be a part of that? A. It is exciting to see the growth that has taken place during the 20-plus years we have been in the community. At the same time, that growth comes with many challenges ranging from housing to infrastructure needs. I plan on continuing to be active in various community organizations and business as our community continues to grow and develop. Q. CHAFE 150 is happening this month. How are you involved this year, and what are you most looking forward to? A. The Sandpoint Rotary Club's annual CHAFE 150 bicycle ride is on June 18, 2022. I am a member of the organizing committee and am looking forward to a great ride this year. With routes of 150, 100, 80, 40, 25 miles and a Family Fun Ride, the ride has a route for every level of experience. I always look forward to the community-wide after-ride party at City Beach. All members of the community are invited to join the riders for great food, a beer and wine garden, and fun activities for the kids riding the Family Fun Ride. Q. What is a favorite memory or experience you have over your many years of being involved with CHAFE 150? A. The first memory would be finishing the 150-

mile ride several years ago. I think working with the volunteers that put the ride on has been a lot of fun. [I have] lots of memories associated with that. Being selected the number three charity ride by Bicycle Magazine, that was a highlight— and several of the after-ride parties down at City Beach (the weather has been incredibly nice), I have some fond memories of those after-ride parties. In 2019 I got to meet the paralympic gold medalist for cycling because he actually rode in the ride, and that was quite something to meet him and talk to him. Q. Having lived in Sandpoint for many years, what piece of advice would you share with people to help get involved and make the most of our community here? A. There are many ways to become active in the community. Seek out opportunities to help others in areas that you have a personal interest or passion. Enjoy everything our community has ranging from great businesses and community organizations to incredible outdoor activities that are available in Northern Idaho. Q. Any particular person or experience who has influenced you most and helped shape how you approach work and life? A. There are many who have influenced and inspired me over the years. I was blessed to have a supportive family, good lifelong friends and outstanding mentors. Growing up on a farm probably influenced me more than anything. It taught me to make the best of what you have, to enjoy the outdoors, the rewards of working hard and to recognize the good in everything, no matter how challenging or difficult it may be.

EMBRACE THE SEASON AT S A N D P O I N T ’ S B E S T SPOTS TO DINE AND DRINK OUTDOORS B Y A B IG A I L T HO R P E

arm weather is (finally) here, and we’re all about embracing every opportunity to head outdoors and enjoy the sun and warmth while we have it. Whether it’s jumping on the boat to head to a location across the lake, or enjoying the handful of favorite local spots closer to home, there’s plenty of opportunity to opt for outdoor dining this summer, with live music and events to keep you entertained along the way. Take a Seat Downtown If you’re looking for an opportunity to people-watch downtown while you enjoy a bite, there are several great patios from which to soak up the sun (and the sights). Fat Pig has a charming covered outdoor side patio and a tasty dinner menu to boot (all scratch-made), and during the summer they offer live music outside on the patio to enjoy while you dine. Just next door, pop into the Pend d’Oreille Winery and opt for a seat outside along Cedar Street while you enjoy a glass (or two!) and some tasty bites. The flatbread pizza is a must. While dining in is an experience, you’ll also find the winery at several events around town this summer. “We will be involved in a few summer festivals including Savor Idaho, Schweitzer Wine Festival and the Taste of the Stars,” says co-owner Kylie Presta. If you want to continue the wine trend, wander a few doors down to Baxter’s, which offers a great wine list, full lunch and dinner menu, and outdoor seating to enjoy it all—and yes, they offer beer and other drinks as well. While you’re exploring 1st Avenue shopping, stop in at the District Boutique and Bistro at I Saw Something Shiny to get your shopping fix while you sip and munch from the tasty menu. Several outdoor tables offer prime seating from which to take in the downtown bustle and scope out your next shopping destination. On the opposite side of town, The Hydra Steakhouse on Lake Street has a large patio out back that’s ideal for enjoying a good North Idaho steak dinner, and they’ve got cocktails to boot. Just recently, the Sandpoint staple opened its doors for breakfast, so you can enjoy the space any time of day. If you’re craving Italian, just next door is Arlo’s, and word on the street is a wood-fired pizza oven is headed their way! If you’re looking for a real casual bite, Joel’s on Church Street has long been serving up some of the favorite Mexican in town. Grab a taco or burrito and head to the outside patio. Make sure to hit it earlier in the day, however, as Joel’s isn’t open for dinner. If it’s lunch hour, be prepared for a bit of rush. Grab a Drink! If you’re looking to grab a drink while you soak up the sun, there’s a number of spots downtown that offer everything from an outdoor picnic table on the sidewalk to a full-on patio. Eichardt's has long been slinging beers, wine and some of the best food in town. The outdoor space is limited, but

if you can grab one of the picnic tables, it’s a great stop along the way. Just next door, MickDuff ’s Brewpub offers a large grassy outdoor seating area with a fire for those chillier evenings. Grab a local brew and head outdoors— if you’re brave enough, you can even join in the cornhole games (and tournaments) that frequently take place in the adjoining parking lot. Weekends the brewpub offers live music outdoors, and if you get hungry, you can grab a bite from the food truck that pulls up for the evening, or head just a few blocks away to MickDuff ’s other location in the old Sandpoint Post Office where the crew serves up a full menu of tasty fare. Across the street, Pour Authority offers a wide variety of beers and wines from all over the country (and world), plus some light bites to munch on while you taste your way to your favorite. As an added bonus, you can head outside to the picnic tables while you imbibe. If you’re still on the beer trail, there are several breweries around Sandpoint that offer prime outdoor patios and delicious brews, including Matchwood Brewing up in the vibrant Granary Arts District, where you can often find live music outdoors and a large patio to fit all of your family and friends. Downtown, Utara Brewing offers great beers, Indian-Anglo cuisine, and a large back patio perfect for sipping and cornhole. In the summer, iconic local bar 219’s back patio comes alive at night. If you’re looking for cocktails, this is the place to be. “Seasonal Huckleberry Mojito with handpicked huckleberries will make its return in July as well. And finally, the Margarita is here every single day, and that’s newsworthy in itself!” says manager Mark Terry. They’ve got a sturdy beer and wine list as well, and in summertime the live music often moves outdoors to the back patio—the perfect place to shake it up, dance and let loose. “Starting in July we will be featuring music every Saturday night on the patio at 9pm. During the festival, we’ll also be adding music on Friday nights,” adds Terry. Patrons can look forward to “local and regional acts from funk to honkytonk to classic rock; rotating food trucks in the works, and all the pool and foosball that people can play!” Waterfront Views When it comes to summer in Sandpoint, waterfront is where you want to be. Thankfully, there’s a number of places to grab a bite and drink waterside. Trinity down at City Beach offers one of the largest waterfront decks in the town, with a tasty menu, cocktails, beer and wine, and outdoor entertainment on occasion. You can sit and watch the sailboats head in and out from the adjacent Windbag Marina, or head down to the public beach for a dip. Situated along Sand Creek downtown, Spuds Waterfront Grill and Burger Dock both offer outdoor dining that overlooks the creek, and they are perfect spots to stave off your hunger during a fun day on the lake. If you’re boating, you can even dock up along the shore briefly while you eat.

Headed the opposite direction down the Pend Oreille River, Dish at Dover Bay is an easy place to pull in and sit down on the outdoor patio. New to Town Over the past year, the restaurant scene in Sandpoint has seen a bit of flux, but this summer will see the arrival of some new places to town—which means it’s time to get out and give them a try! Pearl’s at beyond Hope is the newest already open addition, and, in downtown Sandpoint, Blue Room will be opening sometime in June in the old Ivano’s building on the corner of 1st Avenue and Lake Street. The large outdoor patio with a fountain is a prime spot to enjoy downtown Sandpoint, and the new food and drink menu promises some American favorites with a twist.

Surging Summer Housing Prices By Joshua Nishimoto

ith the influx of a diverse set of individuals and families moving to Sandpoint from all over the country, mostly from California, we are seeing new and exciting developments popping up all over the area. For more information about these types of developments, we turn to real estate agent Luke Webster for the latest information on the ups and downs of development housing, the housing market in general, and how we as locals can prepare for new neighbors. “Bonner County has several different developments currently under construction or in the planning phase,” Webster said. “Until we have some more rural utilities like sewer and water that allow for smaller parcels, I feel that we won’t see new starter homes in the county under $500k. The utilities and underlying zoning are a couple of things locally we can have a say or control in. The costs of goods and demand are a bit out of our control.” New developments mean more people can move into the area, which means locals need to prepare themselves for this population shift. But it’s not all gloom and doom. Having more developments means more options for everyone. “New housing for locals is pretty simple,” Webster said. “It means more people and more options for locals to sell, trade up or down in size or money.” One might consider new developments might give more options to lowincome families, but according to Webster, that’s not necessarily the case. “I don’t believe you will see low-income homes (not talking about government housing, etc.) until there are county utilities and zoning changes,” he said.

When considering new developments, one can’t ignore the fact that employee housing is also playing its part. On May 3, Schweitzer Mountain announced its second venture into employee housing through a partnership with Eastmark Capital Group, a real-estate development company (its first project related to employee housing occurred in the summer of 2020 when they renovated a former assisted living facility in Sandpoint; a dormitory-style housing development for 15 seasonal and full-time employees). Through this partnership, Schweitzer is creating an 84-unit apartment complex near the intersection of Schweitzer Plaza Drive and Triangle Drive in Ponderay, granting employees walking distance to shopping, dining and transportation services. “As far as new developments go … Hopefully it will be a win-win for the community and the ski hill,” Webster said. “I am not a fan of apartments, condos or any other types of housing without a garage. Most American small businesses, inventors and entrepreneurs get their

start in the garage … I hate seeing high-density ‘affordable’ housing that keeps people locked into the rat race.” As far as the housing market in general, it appears to have peaked. According to Webster, this trend looks to continue to move in predictable ways for the summer. “I believe it has peaked nationally,” Webster said. “We can more than likely expect another surge and sideways movement in our market as people leave the West coast.” Whether you are living in Sandpoint or the surrounding area, or you’re considering moving here, Webster reminds us that we are all in this together.“I feel we live in one of the most beautiful areas in the world,” he said. “We are all blessed to live in such an area. A Fish by Any Other Name …

e all might be familiar with the name from the blue mountain-labeled Kokanee brews that have become British Columbia’s most popular beer—and due to close proximity a local favorite as well. But Kokanee are also the landlocked, freshwater form of sockeye salmon that populates Lake Pend Oreille. In the mid-1900s, Lake Pend Oreille was in fact home to the largest Kokanee fishery in the state of Idaho. The small, tasty species was food for larger species like Bull Trout and Rainbow Trout, leading to the production of trophy fish and even world records for Bull and Rainbow Trout taken out of Lake Pend Oreille. In the late 1900s, however, Kokanee numbers had declined dramatically due to other food competition and the annual draining of the lake. Kokanee fishing was closed to anglers until 2013, when healthy levels returned. Today, plenty of Kokanee can still be found in the waters of Lake Pend Oreille, and trophy trout fishing is back, thanks to our tasty lil’ friends.
