This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor Caleb Bowman

So what’s important R isk is a normal part of investing. If you didn’t take on any risk, you wouldn’t have the potential to achieve higher returns. But how much risk should you accept?

you may want your portfolio to include some growth-oriented investments to help keep you ahead of inflation.

• Type of goal - You might have different risk tolerances for different goals. For example, if you know you need a specific amount for a particular goal in two years—such as buying a new car or taking an overseas vacation—you may want to put away money in a low-risk, liquid vehicle. This type of investment might not have much growth potential, but for this goal, you are less interested in achieving a high rate of return than you are in being reasonably sure the money will be there when you need it. So, in this instance, you may have quite a low tolerance for risk. But for a long-term goal, such as a comfortable retirement, you may be prepared to take more risk in the hopes of greater returns, given the longer time horizon.

When you are first starting out in your career, with decades to go until you retire, you may feel comfortable with a certain degree of investment risk, knowing you have time to potentially overcome the inevitable downturns in the financial markets. But as you near retirement, you might consider lowering your risk level and investing more conservatively, because once you do retire, you’ll likely have to start withdrawing money from your retirement accounts, which means you may need to liquidate some investments—and, ideally, you won’t want to have large fluctuations in value at that time. However, even during retirement,

investments—domestic and international stocks, bonds, mutual funds, government securities and so on—you can reduce the impact of market volatility on your portfolio. (Keep in mind, though, that diversification can’t prevent all losses or guarantee profits.) In any case, the biggest risk of all is simply not investing. If you are going to achieve your financial goals, you need to invest for them. By understanding your own risk tolerance, and by making wise choices along the way, you can stick with an investment strategy that can work for you in the long run.

"WE START TO CREATE A COMMUNITY STORY, THROUGH CRAFT, THAT WEAVES US TOGETHER AND HELPS US FEEL AS IF WE BELONG TO THIS LAND."

H

ilary Petterson was introduced to Kaniksu Land Trust six years ago upon moving to Sandpoint with her husband. Since then, she’s worked with KLT as Camp Kaniksu staff, a Kaniksu Folk School instructor—and now as the Folk School coordinator. Originally from Prescott, Arizona, her youth was steeped in a life of folk arts, her entire family played folk music and volunteered at the local living history museum—experiences that drove her passion for connecting people to nature. Today, Petterson pursues her passion with little distinction between work and play. She lives the skills she teaches, and in her free time you’ll find her weaving baskets, tanning hides, foraging for food, playing music and learning new skills. Q. Tell us about your story. What brought you to Sandpoint, and what do you love most about this place? A. I became fascinated with humanity and our unique ability to appreciate art, culture and social connections. I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Humanities and Sociology from Northern Arizona University and have studied primitive living and wilderness survival skills from nationally acclaimed instructors. I traveled extensively teaching traditional living skills, operating my own nature-connection programs for children, and touring with various old-time folk and bluegrass bands. This is what ultimately led me to Sandpoint six years ago. I knew a couple of wilderness skills teachers that lived in this area, and they invited me to check it out. I fell in love with the lake, the land and with the community of like-minded folks that lived here. Q. In what ways are you involved in the community, and what inspires you to give back and be a part of making our community strong? A. In these times I think it's important to share skills and strong community connection for our resilience as a whole. From the empowerment of making fire by hand to the sustainability of tending and harvesting your own foods and

medicine, or carving your own spoon. We start to create a community story, through craft, that weaves us together and helps us feel as if we belong to this land. Q. Can you share about the Kaniksu Folk School and the vision behind it? A. The Kaniksu Folk School seeks to enrich lives and foster an ethic of stewardship through offering classes in traditional skills and craft. It also aims to empower the community through uniting people around concepts of creativity, common values and knowledge sharing. The act of using our hands to create functional items from natural materials is rapidly becoming a lost art. The folk school model also encourages local economies and handcrafted products made from locally sourced materials in an effort to decrease fossil fuel expenditures and enhance rural community resilience. Q. What do you hope to accomplish at Kaniksu and the Folk School in the coming years? A. As the Kaniksu Folk School coordinator, I really want to make these skills accessible to our community. Each season, the roster of classes expands and more instructors have shown interest in participating. The summer 2022 season includes a week-long timber frame workshop, a four-day sheep skin tanning workshop, shoe-making, pack basket weaving, dyeing, foraging, and a new traditional culinary arts series. As well as traditional skills, we also offer a community gathering to kick off each KFS new season lineup. These gatherings are free to attend and are welcoming to families and individuals of all ages and backgrounds. They feature craft demonstrations, old-time games and contests, music, food, and details about current and upcoming classes. The Folk Arts Faire, taking place on September

17, will feature living history amusements, crafts, demonstrations, hands-on experiences, music and food. Our dream is to be able to expand our offerings as well as create a folk school farm campus with classrooms, gardens, a craft shop for local artisans, a tool library, and lodging for resident artists and interns as well as students and traveling teachers. Q. What does this area and Kaniksu Land Trust provide this community that makes our area unique, and how can the community embrace this to the fullest? A. This isn’t just arts and crafts. It’s investing in yourself with an education in basic living skills that we are losing as a culture. Having a knowledge of how to meet our basic needs makes us feel confident and happy. Community feedback has helped shape the content, cost and length of classes. Interest in sustainable building practices has emerged out of the housing market crisis. Kaniksu Land Trust is addressing this issue through a grassroots community land trust initiative and through its folk school, offering hands-on classes that empower people to create their own simple shelters. There is no other program in this area for adults that offers education around traditional folk arts and skills, and there is a great need and interest in our growing community to keep these traditions alive. I love the quote from Peter Drucker that says, “The best way to predict the future is to create it.” Let’s learn our way to a more sustainable society through the community-based traditional skillbuilding and social learning that comes from a deep connection to the environment and each other. Learn more about classes and offerings at Kaniksu.org/kaniksufolkschool.

T H E F E S T I VA L AT SANDPOINT RETURNS FOR ITS 39TH SEASON

B Y A B IG A I L T HO R P E

L

ights, sound, action! Sandpoint’s favorite summer event is back with an impressive lineup for its 39th season as a big small-town event. Each year as summer returns to Sandpoint and we brace ourselves for a busy tourist season, locals and visitors alike anticipate one of Sandpoint’s favorite annual traditions: The Festival at Sandpoint. A big fish in a small pond, The Festival annually brings a celebrated collection of nationally recognized artists to small-town America, for an event that draws not only locals but is a destination for visitors regionally and nationally. This year marks The Festival’s 39th season as a beloved local event that unites audiences in an intimate outdoor setting, bringing the best of the big city to the lawns of Sandpoint’s War Memorial Field. Get ready, because this season is one you won’t want to miss, with a slate of memorable headliners and a return of the favorite Festival traditions we all love. “The Festival is unique in the sense that as a nonprofit we bring large acts to a small town in North Idaho, which is rare for a rural area. We can accomplish this with immense support from our community. There is a sense of pride and ownership in The Festival at Sandpoint and its community,” says Executive Director Ali Baranski. Traditionally, the Festival hosts eight different concerts during its roughly week-long period, but after the success of nine concerts in last year’s return to the stage after a year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year The Festival is hosting 10 different concerts from July 28 to August 7, and the lineup promises to impress. Headliners include The Beach Boys, KALEO, Lindsey Stirling, Gregory Alan Isakov and Pink Martini, with a host of other impressive artists. Throughout the 11-day festival, The Revivalists, Chris Janson and Mt. Joy will also take the stage, with the Spokane Symphony closing out the Festival along with the annual wine tasting event. “It has been so exciting to see our community’s excitement for the high-caliber acts we have lined up for this season. This season’s lineup is like no other, and we can’t wait for Festival Season!” adds Baranski. Last year’s return of The Festival was a big success with a record number of ticket sales—which The Festival is on track to beat this year. “Last year came with some trial and error, however, we received immense support from our staff, board of directors, donors, volunteers and community that allowed us to have the time

and resources we needed to get The Festival back on its feet,” explains Baranski, who served her first season as executive director in 2021. “In my first year as the executive director, I was excited to learn about what it takes to put on this iconic festival. I learned so much last year from our volunteers and crew, and it was incredible to see so many people come together to continue to support this special tradition in our small town, despite new challenges.” Just like last year, food and drink vendors will be returning to Festival Street in the fenced-in portion of Lakeview Park, and they will be offering both in-person debit and credit card ordering and mobile orders through the Noble app. “This year we have seven food booths returning and one new booth called The Cajun Kettle!” says Baranski. To give everyone a bit more space, the bar will be moving to the lakeside concessions building this year, and Adia Burton is welcomed as the new Festival Street chairperson this year, responsible for coordinating all of the food booths. For those experienced veterans of The Festival who know one of its key appeals is the ability to bring your own beverages and food—you’re in luck. Following tradition, The Festival will still be allowing attendees to bring in their own food, beverages (including alcohol) and chairs and blankets. Keep in mind no glass (except wine bottles) is allowed, so plan accordingly. Since last season, The Festival has added two fulltime hires and five summer interns, allowing them to frontload a lot of the planning and giving them more time to fine-tune the systems that make for a smooth and enjoyable Festival season. Paul Gunter has joined the team as the full-time production and education manager, making venue planning easier and also creating new educational programs to share with the community, like the Pre-K Outreach Program that takes Paul to various local preschools to teach music. “We feel lucky to be able to give back to the area with free education programs, economic impact, and access to incredible concert experiences,” says Baranski. The Festival is not only active during its annual concert summer concert series, in fact its education exposes up to 1,000 youth to no-cost music education opportunities year-round. Local businesses benefit from the influx of visitors, as many stay overnight, eat at the local restaurants and shop the downtown Business District. As a nonprofit, The Festival at Sandpoint and its supporters not only bring incredible performances and music education opportunities to this town, enhancing the cultural life of the community, they also support local businesses and provide a boost to the economy. impact to the Sandpoint community as visitors flock to the concerts, 52 percent of whom are from out of state. Throwing such an impressive event takes a lot of work from both employees and volunteers, and The Festival is always looking for volunteers for everything from bartending and checking tickets to selling merchandise and more. “Locals should consider volunteering and give back to the community in a fun environment and while enjoying a concert!” encourages Baranski. The Festival asks that individuals interested in volunteering fill out the volunteer application available on the website; the volunteer chair committee will then make contact with applicants to determine placement and details. Overall this year, concert venues have seen a record number of sales, as concertgoers are eager to get out and return to doing the things they love, and The Festival at Sandpoint is no different. “People are eager to gather and do things they love post-pandemic, and we are excited to see our Canadian visitors returning this summer. Our impressive lineup is already resulting in great ticket sales, and we have heard a lot of excitement from the community,” explains Baranski. Tickets are selling fast—particularly for some of the most popular performances, so make sure to book your tickets early. The Festival recommends buying tickets directly from the website (they use ETix as their ticketing platform), as many ticket resellers online are selling shows for higher than market value. To purchase tickets, see the full lineup and learn more about The Festival at Sandpoint, visit FestivalatSandpoint.com, and get ready to enjoy another memorable season at Sandpoint’s beloved summer concert series!

FOR TRENDS ON THEIR WAY OUT, ALTHOUGH PRICES HAVE INCREASED FOR HOMES IN THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS, COMPETITION IS SLOWLY DYING. WITH FEWER BUYERS LOOKING TO SPEND MARKET VALUE OR HIGHER FOR HOMES, THIS ALLOWS FOR MORE PROPERTIES TO STAY ON THE MARKET LONGER. 22

WILL THE SUMMER HOUSING MARKET

HEAT UP OR COOL DOWN?

What to expect when buying or selling your home ByJoshua Nishimoto

W

hether you’re looking to purchase a summertime fun home on the water or an excellent escape from the sun under a forest canopy, real estate agent Jackie Suarez has the inside scoop to keep your summer housing market home selling or home buying options cool and comfortable as the market is looking to heat up. Spring and summer traditionally provide a slew of options for the avid home hunter. Depending on the location and how much you want to pay for your new property may influence you to wait or pull the trigger on a new home or vacation home. “Our waterfront market sees its highest activity in the summer months,” Suarez said. “Interest rates are forecast to continue to rise and will likely create a sense of urgency for borrowers. While our overall pricing is higher this year compared to 2021, many sellers are currently reducing prices to meet market demand, and we will likely see more of this in the coming months.” For trends on their way out, although prices have increased for homes in the last couple of years, competition is slowly dying. With fewer buyers looking to spend market value or higher for homes, this allows for more properties to stay on the market longer. “With more properties available this year than last year, buyers have more leverage, although we aren’t seeing the power shift from sellers to buyers completely,” she said. “Demand is still high, and people can perceive a good deal—well-priced land and homes are still seeing multiple offers.” To ensure that Suarez’s clients are making the best deal for their needs, she does her homework and stays on top of current and past trends with professional tactics for getting her clients the best deal possible.

“Our market ramps up every summer, so we expect no different this year. However, compared to last year, we should see less of a frenzy and more balanced negotiations with more homes and land to choose from.”

“I research the market and consistently communicate so we know our options and can make the best decisions,” Suarez said. “Each property is unique, and each client's needs are different.” Suarez has also built up a long list of other agents she has worked with, attorneys, lenders, title companies and local professionals, a group of people she relies on, and the key to her success and the successful home buying and selling for her clients. “Timing is important,” Suarez said. And many other conditions combine to make a transaction “best-case” for everyone. “There is no substitute for years of experience when it comes to negotiating and helping my clients reach their goals at the best possible terms, whether buying or selling.” Besides Suarez’s education and experience, another key to her job is paying attention to trends and doing her daily research, not just in the local Sandpoint market, but also in markets where her clients are coming from.

“It's important for me to listen carefully and be ready to anticipate my clients' needs,” she said. “Our market ramps up every summer, so we expect no different this year. However, compared to last year, we should see less of a frenzy and more balanced negotiations with more homes and land to choose from.” A traditional summer brings price reductions from sellers who are unlikely to want to move in the winter. This provides a good opportunity for buyers to negotiate in the late summer season when sellers are more likely to give buyers a little wiggle room when it comes to price. “Closer to the snow coming, some sellers will remove their properties from the market and bring them back for sale the following spring,” Suarez said. “Our Schweitzer Resort market typically ramps up in the fall as the focus shifts from the lake to the mountain.”

MARKET REPORT Summer Real Estate By Joshua Nishimoto

26

THE HEAT IS ON When the summer heat is on, more and more home buyers are looking to purchase lake property. Interest rates are due to rise this summer with overall housing prices to remain higher than 2021, but sellers are currently willing to sell for less to meet market demands. Traditional price reductions this summer will continue for those who do not want to move in the winter, while the resort housing market will continue to rise in the fall as we shift seasons.

LOCAL fun fact

The Sweet, Sweet Sound …

E

ach summer we pack up our blankets, chairs and snacks, and grab friends and family to head to War Memorial Field for a long-time local favorite: The Festival at Sandpoint. But did you know that the Festival started with classical roots, offering symphony music to locals and visitors? Started in 1983, the first few years of The Festival featured various conductors and the symphony, with an occasional soloist. Jazz was introduced in 1986, and by 1992 headliners like Emmy Lou Harris took the stage, and Johnny Cash and June Carter the following year. Over the years The Festival has hosted a variety of famous names to its outdoor stage, like Willie Nelson, Dierks Bentley, Ryan Adams, Etta James, Marshall Tucker Band, ZZ Top, and in 1995 and returning this year, The Beach Boys. But despite its musical evolution, The Festival has stayed true to its roots and culminates with the Spokane Symphony as its finale every year—this one included.
