Leader Comment September 2020 Welcome to the September edition of Leyland Leader. As Autumn approaches, I wonder what it means to you. It’s all very different this year, isn’t it? There’s still back to school and college, farewell to the Summer months - they were different as well, were they not - leaves changing colour, nights drawing in and the rest. What about the Countdown to Christmas, how different that might be in 2020. Perhaps it’s too soon to mention the ‘C’ word, maybe you don’t begin to feel festive until the clocks change in October. Forgive me, but I can’t help wondering as everything else is dominated by that other ‘C’ word - Coronavirus. There can’t be anyone in the UK, or anywhere else for that matter, whose lives haven’t been affected by the pandemic which has cast a huge cloud over us for much of the year. I sincerely hope that you are not feeling too downcast, restricted or troubled at this time. As I write this in the middle of August, I’m desperately aware that things might change significantly by the time we have printed and delivered for September. Here at Leyland Leader we are just happy to be back producing and delivering your local

independent business directory for Leyland (and beyond). There are so many local businesses who are striving to serve our community in the most unusual, and often difficult circumstances - due to that ‘C’ word again. Our 80 pages this month are packed with local trades, businesses, companies and charities, please support them if you are able. They are the foundations upon which our local economy and community are based. These are uncertain times, uncharted waters and who knows how it’s all going to end. In the meantime, stay safe, follow the guidance and stay positive. It’s not easy but try not to dwell on the hated ‘C’ word, it will soon be Christmas!

Strictly legal with Anna-Marie Knipe Can I make a Will during the coronavirus pandemic? Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, we have seen an increase in the demand for our Wills service. Not only are people looking to secure their family’s financial future during a worrying time, but also many people have found that social distancing has given them more time and a rare opportunity to do something that many put off. The simple answer is ‘yes’ Our Wills and Probate Team feel that helping people to make a Will is an essential service. We have made the necessary steps to maintain our Wills service while safeguarding the health and wellbeing of our staff and clients. Our team members are available and working hard from home to carry on serving the public and can be instructed to make your Will.

as long as all three are present and can see each other sign. For example, as long as you keep to social distancing guidelines, Wills can be witnessed by neighbours over the garden wall or through a window. The witnesses then add their signature, name and address in case they need to be contacted at a later date to prove the signing of the will. We advise that everyone uses their own pens and wear gloves if they are available.

How is making a Will different at this time? Essentially there are three main ways that making a Will whilst social distancing will be different: 1. Usually our Wills and Probate service would take place in a face-to-face consultation but the meeting can now done by phone or online video (Facetime, Zoom or WhatsApp). We are all quickly adapting to keeping in touch using technology and our Wills experts have found that clients are comfortable working with us in this new way. Whilst keeping to Government and NHS advice, we will always work with our client in a way that best suits them and brings them peace of mind. Before you start the process of making a Will, it is important that you prepare for the online or telephone meeting. Think about what questions you would like to ask; write a list of your assets and finances; decide who you wish to include in your Will and who you wish to oversee it (the Executor of your Will). 2. Before the coronavirus outbreak, documents relating to the Will process would be exchanged physically but that is obviously not possible at this time. Instead your documents will be exchanged via recorded post or email. 3. For a Will to be valid it must be signed in the presence of two witnesses. It means that three people must be physically present to sign the document; the Will maker and the two witnesses. Social distancing makes this difficult but a bit of creative thinking can get around the challenge

Anna-Marie Knipe at home and ready to help. Solicitor & Partner at Birchall Blackburn Law, Chair of the South Ribble Dementia Action Alliance, and Member of STEP and SFE. If you are unsure about how the Will process will work during this uncertain time, if you are concerned about social distancing during the witness signing or would just like to discuss the process in general then call an expert Wills solicitor. Our team will provide free and confidential initial advice before you have to make any decisions. Just call Anna-Marie on 01772 427 610 or email amknipe@birchallblackburn.co.uk.

Walking improves general health and well-being The importance of regular exercise and a good diet is well-known and both are documented as aids to a long and healthy life. While most of us can manage the diet side of things perfectly well and fit our nutritional needs around our lifestyle, when it comes to doing the same with exercise many of us are sadly lacking. Contrary to popular belief, exercise does not have to be regimented or expensive, requiring us to sign up for numerous classes or hours at the gym; one of the simplest, best and cheapest forms of regular exercise is walking, something most of us do every day without even thinking about it. Walking can easily be fitted into a daily routine by most, whether you’re a stay-athome Mum, a busy professional or a retiree. It can be done with others, alone, or even with your dog, and doesn’t require a personal trainer. It improves lung and heart function and strengthens the muscles in the lower body, and because walking is a load-bearing activity it can help with poor bone density, making it particularly beneficial for older people. In short, we can all benefit from walking. There are many opportunities in the day to take a walk and it doesn't have to be chore. Starting a walking programme is as easy as walking to the local shops and walking the children to school rather than driving or taking a bus. Begin by taking a walk in your lunch break and see the increase in your mental performance at work during the afternoon or walk in the evening and experience a much better quality of sleep. Walking in open countryside or the local park adds another pleasant dimension to your exercise. But while you take in the beauty of the local flora and fauna along your chosen route, focusing on the quality and distance of

your walking can dramatically benefit your wellbeing and increase fitness. After a few weeks of easing yourself into the habit, try to walk more briskly and add some uphill stretches into your route for extra benefit. This will help burn off calories and increase cardiovascular fitness, and once a good level has been reached, try power walking at as fast a pace as you can manage during the middle section of your walk. Enjoy striding out, getting fresh air in your lungs and appreciating your surroundings as you go along. You will soon find that you start to look forward to your daily walk, and you will certainly notice the difference in your general health. At this point you may consider joining a rambling club to enjoy your new-found exercise with others. Ramblers meet for regular walks in stunning surroundings, and tackle walks for all levels of fitness. You may even find you make some new friends to share your new exercise regime with. Details of these clubs can be found on the internet or at local libraries.

Lift the pressure of September spending

As well as the beginning of a new school year, September also marks 100 days until Christmas Day on the 16th. We know that both of these events can bring additional pressure when you’re living on a tight budget. Here are a few tips to help you save a little and spend less this month. Reuse school uniforms if you can Due to the lockdown, your kids' school uniforms and PE kits may have had less wear than they normally would this year. If they're in good condition and fit, this could be a welcome money saver. Check before you buy new. Swap and save with other families If your kids have outgrown their clothes or shoes, how about organising a school uniform swap with other families in your area? There are loads of Facebook groups set up to do exactly this so check if there’s one in your area. If not, you could set one up yourself. You can bet there will be a lot of grateful parents. Find out if you qualify for help with uniform costs If you really do need to buy new uniform and PE kit, make sure you check what help is available in your local area via the council. Visit gov.uk/helpschool-clothing-costs to check if you’re eligible. Remember that you don’t need to buy everything all at once. Take the pressure off yourself and make a plan based on what you urgently need and what could wait a little while until you have more cash saved up. Label it to keep it safe Get yourself a laundry marker from the supermarket or online and label each item of uniform. This way, it will find its way back to you if it gets lost, and you won't have to spend money on replacements. Plan and save for Christmas Once school uniforms are sorted, it only seems two minutes before we’re turning attention towards Christmas. There’s still plenty of time to plan ahead and start saving towards the costs. Think about what’s most important to you and prioritise spending. Is it having a nice family meal and get-together? Or is it making sure each person has a gift to open? Maybe it’s a combination. Either way, plan your budget carefully in advance so you know what you can and can’t afford, and how much you need to save. Try saving just £1 per day – that’s £100

saved by Christmas Day. How many turkeys, spuds and sprouts could you buy with that? Make a list to avoid impulse buys To help you stick to your budget, it’s a good idea to make a list of what you need to buy and tick things off as you get each item. Then look at what offers are available in the shops. Maybe you could have a box, storage cupboard or space in the freezer to set aside, saving any tinned, packet or frozen foods on special offer. Why not do the same with presents? Just remember where you hide them! Spend time, not money Christmas doesn’t have to mean splashing out. What do you remember most about Christmases when you were a child? Is it the presents or memories? We can find a lot of joy in spending time with loved ones without spending money. Keep an eye out for events your local church is planning over the festive season – a carol service could be the ideal opportunity to spend a few hours together as a family. "Social Media for Parents and Carers - Do's and Don'ts to keep your child or young person safe"

During Coronavirus lockdown children and young people across the Nation were forced to continue their education and studies at home. The increase of social media use was significant but so too was the concern regarding increase access to children and young people from perpetrators who deliberately groom young people online. The Europol Exploitation isolation (June 2020) * reports “while the number of young children accessing the internet has grown significantly over recent months, awareness of the potential risks remains low and cases of online sexual abuse and exploitation have increased significantly”. It is important parents and carers ensure children and young people are using social media safely and not putting themselves at risk of inappropriate actions, online abuse, bullying or exploitation. As an experienced Trainer in Safeguarding and Sexual Health, I decided to take a proactive response to these issues concerning children and young people’s vulnerabilities online by creating a free YouTube resource for Parents and Carers. This 30 mins film gives information and highlights causes for concern regarding social media and child sexual exploitation with practical advice, a checklist, and websites. The resource is beneficial for adults who have direct contact with children and young people including community members, volunteers, social workers, youth workers and grandparents in fact anyone who is significantly placed to influence and connect with children and young people. https://youtu.be/-EhDHVuLRtg BRIEF BIOG Karen Livesey is a qualified teacher, youth worker and experienced trainer. Builders making sound investment with local radio

A NON-PROFIT volunteer-run

Radio Leyland’s Daniel Clarkson and Jay Cooper with the new headsets

Sian Pitt, sales director at Redrow Homes (Lancashire) said: “Radio Leyland has a fantastic number of listeners from the area close to our Worden Gardens development. “It is a great platform for the community to share their news and promote all the good that is happening locally. It’ll be great to hear the radio reporting live on sports games too thanks to their new headsets.” Redrow support communities close to where they build through community Brian Ashman (pictured above), station manager, says the station doesn’t funds such as the one that has supported Radio Leyland. Twelve groups and good just facilitate discussions, it also causes from across Leyland have shared provides a platform for local £5000 that will support them in helping organisations to share news and views: “We provide more than 40 hours a week others. For more details about Worden Gardens, of original programming and are see www.redrow.co.uk/wordengardens, hopefully moving into live sports call 01772 340818 or visit the sales reporting too and this is what we will centre, open daily. need the new headsets for. “The new headsets are noise cancelling and so filter unwanted background noise like that of a football crowd.” Radio Leyland started broadcasting on 104.8FM to the Leyland area in April 2019 and currently has around 7000 listeners who tune in on a weekly basis.

In the Garden

A monthly gardening column with Debbie Noblett from The Plant Stall, Leyland Market Well who can believe we are in September already and heading towards Autumn, but there are plenty of jobs to keep you busy in the garden, we’ll have three subject matters this month, edibles, ornamentals and bulbs. Edibles Cut or pull the tops off main crop potatoes to ground level, 3 weeks before you harvest them, this helps to stop blight spores infecting tubers and firms the skins up. When you harvest them leave them in a cool dark place to dry off, then store in paper or hessian sacks, don’t keep any infected, soft or damaged potatoes, one in a sack can spoil the rest. Cut the tops off tomato plants and remove leaves to allow them to ripen. Keep watering and feeding french and runner beans, picking little and often to stop them going to seed. It’s a good idea to pot up some windowsill herbs like parsley and mint for use throughout the winter. Pot strawberry runners up ready for next year. Ornamentals Keep dead heading penstemmons, dahlias, and roses to keep them flowering. Start to divide herbaceous

perennials and water the re-planted ones well. Water azaleas, rhododendrons and camellias, to assist bud initiation for next year. Carry on feeding and dead heading Summer planted pots and hanging baskets, to keep them as long as you can. Bulbs Buy pre-cooled hyacinth bulbs ready for flowering at Christmas, these are usually a little more expensive than the ordinary outdoor varieties. We pot these in garden soil, with the tip showing in a small pot, water them in and cover, we leave these outside, until November, then uncover them and bring them inside. Amaryllis are another to buy ready for Christmas flowering. It’s time to plant daffodil, crocus, tulips and other Spring flowering bulbs. Always look at the size of the bulb, make sure it’s a decent size and firm, if you buy them in a bag, empty them out and give them a bit of room before you plant them. So there’s plenty to keep you busy in September, as we head towards Autumn. Keep busy outside in your garden, it’s a safe place to be. Take care before we know where we are it will be the C word!đ&#x;Ž„ Debbie Noblett
