Leader Comment August 2020 HOW good it feels to be back, if under strict guidelines, after more than two months of lockdown. These are still strange times but at least Leyland Leader, along many other local businesses is slowly opening up. Keep calm and carry on - yet stay safe and stay alert is the order of the day for us and everyone around. We recently celebrated our 15th birthday issue, our June magazine was the first after lockdown and, as we were unable to print in April and May, issue 180 was a ‘celebration’ for several reasons. Leyland Leader began back in April 2005 with a simple 40 page black and white magazine with a card cover and plain paper. Since then we have progressed to a monthly glossy with, on average, 88 full colour pages. This ‘risen from the ashes of the pandemic’ edition is slightly reduced in pages because, not everyone is fully getting back to work yet. Coronavirus - the C-Word, it’s been on people’s hearts and minds for months and not just in Leyland, or the UK. Coronavirus is global and it’s affected everyone’s lives, has it not? It’s not something any of us have ever experienced in our lives and, I suppose, the hardest part is not knowing where it’s leading, when is it going to end and what kind of world will be left when it’s run its course. Self isolation, face masks and social

distancing have become everyday features. It’s such a shame that events such as Leyland Festival 2020 and Music In The Park and countless others have had to be cancelled. Yet, public health and safety will always be the number one priority. Prospects for the economy and ‘normal life’ are still not great, but the wheels of industry, locally and nationally are starting to turn again. We are grateful to all the many local businesses - hundreds of them - who have supported us over our 15 years of serving Leyland. It’s especially gratifying to know that most of our current supporters - your local trades, businesses, organisations and charities are keen to continue to work with us. Let’s support our local businesses, they need us more than ever as we move forward - uncertain times, uncharted waters, but if we work together, we can make the most of them. Also, remember to thank the many key workers who have continued to battle through this crisis to keep the country going. They are all simply wonderful and we owe them our heartfelt gratitude. Stay safe! Keith and Ruth Bradshaw

Strictly legal with Anna-Marie Knipe Can I make a Will during the coronavirus pandemic? Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, we have seen an increase in the demand for our Wills service. Not only are people looking to secure their family’s financial future during a worrying time, but also many people have found that social distancing has given them more time and a rare opportunity to do something that many put off. The simple answer is ‘yes’ Our Wills and Probate Team feel that helping people to make a Will is an essential service. We have made the necessary steps to maintain our Wills service while safeguarding the health and wellbeing of our staff and clients. Our team members are available and working hard from home to carry on serving the public and can be instructed to make your Will.

as long as all three are present and can see each other sign. For example, as long as you keep to social distancing guidelines, Wills can be witnessed by neighbours over the garden wall or through a window. The witnesses then add their signature, name and address in case they need to be contacted at a later date to prove the signing of the will. We advise that everyone uses their own pens and wear gloves if they are available.

How is making a Will different at this time? Essentially there are three main ways that making a Will whilst social distancing will be different: 1. Usually our Wills and Probate service would take place in a face-to-face consultation but the meeting can now done by phone or online video (Facetime, Zoom or WhatsApp). We are all quickly adapting to keeping in touch using technology and our Wills experts have found that clients are comfortable working with us in this new way. Whilst keeping to Government and NHS advice, we will always work with our client in a way that best suits them and brings them peace of mind. Before you start the process of making a Will, it is important that you prepare for the online or telephone meeting. Think about what questions you would like to ask; write a list of your assets and finances; decide who you wish to include in your Will and who you wish to oversee it (the Executor of your Will). 2. Before the coronavirus outbreak, documents relating to the Will process would be exchanged physically but that is obviously not possible at this time. Instead your documents will be exchanged via recorded post or email. 3. For a Will to be valid it must be signed in the presence of two witnesses. It means that three people must be physically present to sign the document; the Will maker and the two witnesses. Social distancing makes this difficult but a bit of creative thinking can get around the challenge

Anna-Marie Knipe at home and ready to help. Solicitor & Partner at Birchall Blackburn Law, Chair of the South Ribble Dementia Action Alliance, and Member of STEP and SFE. If you are unsure about how the Will process will work during this uncertain time, if you are concerned about social distancing during the witness signing or would just like to discuss the process in general then call an expert Wills solicitor. Our team will provide free and confidential initial advice before you have to make any decisions. Just call Anna-Marie on 01772 427 610 or email amknipe@birchallblackburn.co.uk.

Radio Leyland is one year old!

Earlier this year, in the middle of ‘lockdown,’ Radio Leyland celebrated its first birthday as the local FM community radio station for Leyland and the surrounding area, broadcasting on 104.8 FM, online at radioleyland.com and on your smart device. Leyland’s local all-volunteer radio station started life with the setting up of a non-profit company in late 2014. An initial 3-day experimental broadcast followed, in June 2015, as Leyland Festival Radio. June 2017 saw the team dip another toe in the water with a one-week FM broadcast in support of Leyland Festival. Soon after, to the team’s surprise (and much earlier than expected) Ofcom invited further new applications for local community radio licences. After a mad scramble to complete the application process, Ofcom offered the group a five-year community radio licence in December 2017 and the station began its permanent radio service on 1 April 2019 with a show hosted in partnership by Rev Phil Gough and

this magazine’s proprietor, Keith Bradshaw. The launch was attended by station volunteers, sponsors, advertisers and supporters, sharing breakfast supplied by The Mill at St Catherine’s. The station now boasts an estimated 7,000+ weekly listeners, with around 30 volunteers producing a wide range of programmes aimed primarily at the over-35s.

‘...a unique package that offers something for virtually everybody…’ Founder and station manager Brian Ashman (pictured at the British Commercial Vehicle Museum opposite) believes the station’s strength lies in its diversity and openness: “Radio Leyland is proud of the wealth and variety of talent, knowledge and passion that exists among our volunteers. They are our lifeblood and it’s their commitment and dedication that enables us to produce relevant local programming that’s simply not available elsewhere. “Apart from local news and interviews in our Breakfast show, a high-energy Drivetime, vintage music from the 1920s to the 1970s in our daily dementiafriendly afternoon show, we have a great range of specialist shows. “It all forms a unique package that offers something for virtually everybody locally, whether they enjoy rock, indie, jazz-funk, swing, country, soul, music from a particular decade – we have it all. “We also provide space for innovation and experimentation. By way of example, our Myths and Music series, hosted by Alex Wruk, produced some of the most dramatic, compelling and unforgettable story narration we’ve ever heard – a good reason, if anyone needed one, for visiting our listen again facility at mixcloud.com/Leyland_festival_radio. “Of course, none of this would be possible without our marvellous listeners, our hard-working volunteers, and, in particular, the many local businesses who support us with show sponsorship and advertising, including Leyland Market, Coopers Taxis, Birchall Blackburn Law, C&W Berry Ltd., and members of our 100 Club. “We’re also deeply indebted to Leyland Leader, the BB4B networking group

and to local Christian bookshop and publisher 10ofthose.com for all their support and kindness.” Here’s to a second successful year for Leyland’s own radio station!

Eyesentials reopens for routine eye tests

An Leyland independent opticians has expanded its services to allow patients to book routine eye tests for the first time since they were suspended in March. Following new guidance from NHS England, Eyesentials Opticians, on Hough Lane, is accepting patients who have noticed a change in their vision for consultations with their Optometrist. Customers will now also be able to purchase glasses, sunglasses and contact lenses in practice, as well as book complimentary style consultations with practice team members. Extra measures have been implemented to guarantee a safe environment at Eyesentials, as all team members are equipped with full PPE, social distancing procedures are in place, and touchpoints and frames are sanitised regularly after each use. Although now reopening for routine appointments, the independent opticians has been working throughout the lockdown to support the local community. This has included conducting emergency eye appointments, delivering glasses to the door of vulnerable patients who were self-isolating, and

updating their website to allow customers to purchase glasses and sunglasses online. Currently, the opticians is not accepting walk-ins to the practice and all patients are urged to call to book their appointment prior to visiting. Dispensing Optician Adrian Halsall said: “There will be changes in practice, from social distancing to PPE, but these are in place to keep us all safe, as the health of our patients and team members will always be our priority. “What will remain is our commitment to offering patients the same top-quality care that they are used to, and as we are able to spend much longer with patients it means we can give you an even more personalised service. “We would ask patients to come into practice wearing a face mask, but we are more than happy to provide you one on arrival, should you need it. “It’s been a pleasure to continue to serve the community throughout the lockdown and we’re very much looking forward to seeing the friendly faces of our patients once again.” To contact the practice or to book an appointment, you can call the team on

"Social Media for Parents and Carers - Do's and Don'ts to keep your child or young person safe"

During Coronavirus lockdown children and young people across the Nation were forced to continue their education and studies at home. The increase of social media use was significant but so too was the concern regarding increase access to children and young people from perpetrators who deliberately groom young people online. The Europol Exploitation isolation (June 2020) * reports “while the number of young children accessing the internet has grown significantly over recent months, awareness of the potential risks remains low and cases of online sexual abuse and exploitation have increased significantly”. It is important parents and carers ensure children and young people are using social media safely and not putting themselves at risk of inappropriate actions, online abuse, bullying or exploitation. As an experienced Trainer in Safeguarding and Sexual Health, I decided to take a proactive response to these issues concerning children and young people’s vulnerabilities online by creating a free YouTube resource for Parents and Carers. This 30 mins film gives information and highlights causes for concern regarding social media and child sexual exploitation with practical advice, a checklist, and websites. The resource is beneficial for adults who have direct contact with children and young people including community members, volunteers, social workers, youth workers and grandparents in fact anyone who is significantly placed to influence and connect with children and young people. https://youtu.be/-EhDHVuLRtg BRIEF BIOG Karen Livesey is a qualified teacher, youth worker and experienced trainer.
