Leader Comment March 2020 Welcome to our March magazine, Issue 179. “It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade.” So said Charles Dickens. It’s a bit like that, isn’t it? The month of March is waving goodbye to Winter and welcoming Spring, yet the weather can never quite make it’s mind up - or is that just here in the North West of England? Whatever, let’s think positive. Here’s some great news - a brand new all-star Summer Music Festival for Leyland. It’s going to be an 80’s Music Extravaganza, to be held in the awardwinning Worden Park on Friday June 19 - Leyland Festival Weekend. Check out details on page 84. On another positive note, let’s give a big shout out to all the nominees and recipients of the South Ribble Community Awards for 2019. At a glittering ‘Oscars style’ Civic Centre ceremony, hosted by BBC TV’s Dave Guest, the Borough’s finest teachers, volunteers, community groups and businesses were recognised. The annual awards highlight those fine people who ‘consistently go above or beyond the call of duty.’ They pay tribute to the amazing work of young people, volunteers, people in the community and supporters of those living with dementia. Incredibly, there were over 200 nominations across 11 different categories, with two special achievement awards. We congratulate everyone involved. Read all about them on page 70.

3

It was a very busy night for the genial Mayor of South Ribble, Councillor Harry Hancock, who presented the recipients and those short listed with their awards. Here he is pictured with Young Volunteer of The Year William Bamford. Leyland Leader doesn’t really go in for politics, but it’s only right to welcome our new MP as we go forward. With a comfortable majority of 11,000 plus, Katherine Fletcher, Conservative, has taken over from Seema Kennedy as our Parliamentary representative. Katherine is originally from Manchester, she is a science graduate from Nottingham University and this is her first post as an MP. She has previously worked as a Safari Ranger in Africa - working with wild animals, does that equip you for the cut and thrust of politics? Could be interesting, we wish her well. Here’s hoping the month of March goes well for you - and here’s hoping you enjoy and make good use of our latest magazine. It’s another 88 pages featuring Leyland’s finest. ’Use them or lose them,’ they say of the High Street, it applies to all your local businesses. We need them - don’t we? Keith and Ruth Bradshaw

Twenty five years - at last! With Towngate Shoe Repairs

LEYLAND’S premier cobbler is celebrating 25 years of his business. Congratulations to genial Craig Statters, the owner and driving force of Towngate Shoes.

When it comes to talking cobblers, Craig’s your man - he’s been at the top of his game, and Towngate Shoes has been successfully serving the people of Leyland for a quarter of a century. Craig explained; “I started as an apprentice cobbler in Preston in 1993. It took three years to

finish my apprenticeship and by 1996 I was installed as manager at 84 Towngate - the business I now own.” Towngate Shoe Repairs had opened in 1994 and within three years, the joint owners decided to dissolve the partnership. This enabled Craig to take over the business and he’s never looked back. Despite the sign above the doors, Craig doesn’t exclusively repair shoes. Since taking over, he has added a whole range of skills and services. These include key cutting, engraving, trophies for schools and sports clubs, watch batteries and straps and equestrian tack repairs. He’s a very useful man to know! A traditional time served cobbler, a master craftsman, here’s to the next 25 years, well done Craig!

A big year celebrating 800 years of worship in Leyland

St Andrew’s Church is celebrating 800 years of a church, situated on the same Church Road site we see today, being part of our community in Leyland. 2020 is a very special year for St Andrew’s and the folks there want to celebrate and reach out to the community.

During 2020 there will be the opportunity to view the church where a guide will be able to show all the history. We are told dynamite was once used to blow out the sides of the church in order to make the church building bigger. Is this fact or fiction ? Come on one of the heritage tours on in March or September to find out. Popular Australian Christian entertainer Colin Buchanan will be live in concert in church on April 15. On May 8 the whole country celebrates 75 years since VE day and to mark this occasion St Andrew’s has organised a VE Day – Songs of Praise evening accompanied by the award-winning Leyland Band. On July 2 at 7:30pm there is an evening with Jeremy Marshall, a former Chief Executive of one of the large private banks in the city of London, who is suffering from Cancer. He has written a book ‘Beyond the Big C.’ If you have been touched by issues with cancer or know someone who has, then this is the event for you. A heritage bike ride is planned for September 5 starting from St Andrew’s and visiting all the churches in the area St Andrew’s has planted. The Bishop of

Burnley, the Rt Rev Philip North, has agreed to take part. If you want to know if a Bishop cycles with his cassock on, come along to the heritage bike ride. Professional wrestling with a mission returns to St Andrew’s on October 3. Grappler Gareth Thompson, is about to mount a successful return to the St Andrew’s church arena to take on members of the Lancashire Wrestling Federation. All these events lead up to a week of outreach starting Monday October 12. St Andrew’s is organising a full week of events for all ages and daily mid-week seminars focusing on life issues. On Saturday evening October 17, Jamie Jones-Buchanan, formerly of Leeds Rhinos Rugby League club, is returning to St Andrew’s church for what is guaranteed to be an entertaining evening. On Sunday 18th October The outreach week will culminate on Sunday October 18 with all services being guest services. The 6:30pm evening service will provide the final focus for the week. Plans are already underway for a final ‘800 Years celebration’ in November. This will be a Gala event to ‘round off the year in style’. For more details visit www.standrewsleyland.org.uk/800years or ring St Andrews’s church office on 01772 622964 during weekdays.

South Ribble Community Awards 2020

LEYLAND Civic Centre was packed for the 2020 for the South Ribble Community Awards. The Borough’s finest teachers, volunteers, community groups and businesses were recognised at the glittering awards ceremony highlighting those who ‘consistently go above or beyond their call of duty’. The Awards pay tribute to the amazing work of young people, volunteers, people in the community and supporters of those living with dementia, as recipients are announced across 11 different categories. The evening was hosted by broadcasting legend and BBC North West Tonight regular, Dave Guest, and Councillor Harry Hancock, the Mayor of South Ribble, congratulated recipients and presented the awards. The South Ribble Community Awards are organised by the South Ribble Partnership – the local strategic partnership for South Ribble which brings together people from across the public sector, businesses, voluntary groups, and community organisations. Jacqueline De-Rose, Chair of the South Ribble Partnership and Group Chief Executive at Progress Housing Group, said: “Congratulations to everyone that was nominated. It was a difficult decision, but we arrived at a shortlist, with three people shortlisted in each category. “With over 200 nominations, this was incredibly tough, and I was astounded by the inspirational work going on in South Ribble. I want to thank people for submitting their nominations and pay tribute to the worthy causes and activities which people are dedicating themselves to on a

weekly, even daily, basis. The shortlist represents the very best in the borough.” Councillor Paul Foster, Vice-Chair of the South Ribble Partnership, said: “The awards ceremony was a really enjoyable, inspirational evening. It brought together the very best of South Ribble and celebrated everyone’s incredible achievements. “It’s so important that we take the opportunity to highlight cases of people going the extra mile to care for their customers, pupils, employees or students. Often, these are acts of kindness and dedication which are far from required or even expected in their role; however, they do it regardless because they care deeply about the quality of their work and the happiness of the person or people on receiving end.” Volunteer of the Year - JOAN MUSKER Young Volunteer of The Year - WILLIAM BAMFORD Spirit of the Community - SHARON McLAUGHLIN Special Achievement - ANDREA ANDREWS; Teacher of the Year - MIKE MITCHELL Dementia Friend of The Year - KEITH McINTOSH Dementia Friendly Organisation ST MARY’S CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL Apprentice Employer of Year - LEYLAND TRUCKS Response Service Extra Mile - RUSSELL CROOK Partnership Excellence MID LANCS COLTS JUNIOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE Business In The Community - PROGRESS HOUSING Special Recognition: Healthy Workplace ACTIVE LANCASHIRE Special Recognition: Raising Awareness REBECCA RAMSAY

Landmark ‘ton up’ for local networking group

A LEYLAND business networking group, having met monthly for over eight years, is celebrating a century of successful breakfast meetings. BB4B – Breakfast Before Business - recently held their 100th consecutive meeting. And that’s a lot of breakfasts, if not business! BB4B began in September 2011 and over 100 gatherings later, has welcomed countless local business leaders through the doors. The group is organised and run by Keith and Ruth Bradshaw, owners of local business magazine Leyland Leader. Keith explained: “The idea of an informal networking group grew out of a business breakfast that I organised during a Mission Week at St Andrew’s Parish Church in Leyland. Several business contacts I had came along and the idea of meeting regularly took off. “For several years we met every month in the church, for business networking purposes, and the group has grown from strength to strength. We now meet at Leyland Golf Club, an ideal location where we are very well catered for, in every sense, by restaurant proprietor Vince Slater. Many BB4B group ‘members’ – there are no official joining fees or membership forms to fill in - have attended loyally for years and, having become firm friends, offer mutual support and lots of business is carried out. Ruth Bradshaw added: “We see ourselves as a friendly, informal yet very effective networking group. There are lots of laughs, but at the same time, serious business networking takes place. “Over time, we have held several social events, including Christmas parties and a Summer Charity Ball. Plus, we raise money for local causes and support Leyland Food

Bank every month.” BB4B meetings last an hour, breakfast comes first and is followed by a prize draw. A member then takes time to highlight their own business or organisation. Each guest is also given time to explain briefly who they are and what they do – there are always ‘new’ people at each gathering. Andy Prosser, owner of Enterprize Web Design and Print, said: “It’s great to be part of such an awesome business network, and to have got to know so many business leaders over the last five years.” Tina Russell, owner of Tasty Business, gave a presentation (with cake) at the centenary meeting, adding: “I really enjoy being part of the BB4B local business community and knowing so many great people.” The monthly meetings are usually held on the first Friday of each month, for more information about BB4B, contact Ruth Bradshaw via ruthbrad@uwclub.net.

In the Garden

A monthly gardening column with Debbie Noblett from The Plant Stall, Leyland Market After a very wet Winter, we head towards Spring. A quote often used for March is: “In like a Lion, out like a Lamb” hopefully it’s right and we should see some better weather towards the end of March. It’s good to see hawthorn and beech hedges sprouting green growth, azaleas and Spring flowering bushes ready to burst their buds, about to give us a much needed splash of colour in our gardens. As sap rises, now is a good time to take cuttings for Summer flowering plants. You need a sharp clean scalpel, or a small thread cutter, you can get these from a good haberdashery stall, they are small, neat and sharp, and there’s less danger of cutting yourself. For geraniums/pelargoniums or any thick fleshy stems, remove all the buds, use a scalpel, cut below a leaf joint, where there is a new shoot at an angle. The cutting should be about 1-2 inches, remove the bottom leaves, dip in a hormone rooting powder and place around the edge of a pot or container filled with seed/cutting compost. Water sparingly and place in a warm, light frost free position. When they start to grow and develop roots, pot them on, into a potting compost mix, which will contain all the nutrients needed. Fuchsia cuttings need to be taken below a leaf joint, use new growth and use a scalpel

or thread cutter, take off any buds, remove the bottom leaves and put around the edge of a pot, again filled with seed/cutting compost, these root quickly and don’t need rooting powder. Again, these need to be 1-2 inches long. When they start to grow and have good roots, pot them on. Pinching the tops out will make them bush out and give a stronger plant, and the tops can also be used as cuttings. If you have a pieris or flame of the forest, you might notice it’s covered in buds, which flower like a bunch of pearls. If you take all the buds off, then you will get more red leaves on your plant, possibly a little later, do watch these tender pink/red leaves as one keen night of frost can spoil them. Let’s look forward to better weather and a good start to Summer.

Nordic Walking - Exercise for Everyone

Nordic Walking is a way of making a walk into a workout and is being enjoyed by increasingly more people now. It started as the summer training for skiers and it is a bit like using a cross-trainer, but outdoors. But what are the benefits? Here is just a short list: Nordic Walking works the whole body. You burn more calories when Nordic Walking than ordinary walking. It is great for neck, shoulders and backs. It is great for people who work at a desk. You get outdoors for more fresh air and sunlight. It improves posture. You lessen the impact on your joints – great for people with arthritis It is extremely sociable and fun.

The poles are used to propel you along and you need to be taught the technique by a qualified instructor so you get the most out of your poles.
