Leader Comment November 2020 Well, it was always going to end in tiers, wasn’t it? Trouble is, there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight. Life goes on, yet Coronavirus continues to be a constant life-changing challenge for everyone. Times are uncertain, aren’t they? What a year 2020 has turned out to be, and it’s not over yet! We hope you are managing to stay safe and follow the guidance, whatever your circumstances. Here at Leyland Leader, we are delighted to be able to produce another copy of our monthly business magazine for our town. The November 2020 issue, 80 pages once more, is packed with local trades, businesses, companies and charities. Please support them if you are able. They are the foundations upon which our local economy and community and based - and these days, they rely on our support more than ever. In the midst of these uncharted waters, there are achievements to be celebrated. Let’s congratulate the new Mayor of South Ribble who, let’s face it, embarks upon a journey of civic duties which will unfold like no other before it. Welcome Councillor Jane Bell and her daughter Emma, who will serve as her deputy in their period of office, which will last until 2022 - an extended 18 months period due to the pandemic. If nothing else, Councillor Bell with her trademark brightly coloured hair will bring much needed vibrancy into our lives. Despite the obvious Covid constraints, Jane is keen to get involved in her new responsibilities. She said; “The last six months have been difficult, to say the least, and the next six don’t look much better. Having lived and worked in the community for over 40 years, I know just how much community

groups contribute, not just in times of crisis. My Mayoral charities all offer ‘safe havens’ - St Catherine’s Hospice, Clare House women’s refuge and SLEAP based in Leyland.” We wish her well.

Congratulations also to Leyland great grandma Patricia Baker, who recently celebrated her 90th birthday by skydiving from 15000 feet to raise funds for Derian House - check out her story on page 72. Apart from Covid, what about that other ‘C word’ - Christmas? It promises to be so different this year, doesn’t it? Let’s be positive, think of festive cheer and get out and support our local businesses. Take care, stay safe and look after each other. Keith and Ruth Bradshaw

Strictly legal with Anna-Marie Knipe Can I make a Will during the coronavirus pandemic? Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, we have seen an increase in the demand for our Wills service. Not only are people looking to secure their family’s financial future during a worrying time, but also many people have found that social distancing has given them more time and a rare opportunity to do something that many put off. The simple answer is ‘yes’ Our Wills and Probate Team feel that helping people to make a Will is an essential service. We have made the necessary steps to maintain our Wills service while safeguarding the health and wellbeing of our staff and clients. Our team members are available and working hard from home to carry on serving the public and can be instructed to make your Will.

as long as all three are present and can see each other sign. For example, as long as you keep to social distancing guidelines, Wills can be witnessed by neighbours over the garden wall or through a window. The witnesses then add their signature, name and address in case they need to be contacted at a later date to prove the signing of the will. We advise that everyone uses their own pens and wear gloves if they are available.

How is making a Will different at this time? Essentially there are three main ways that making a Will whilst social distancing will be different: 1. Usually our Wills and Probate service would take place in a face-to-face consultation but the meeting can now done by phone or online video (Facetime, Zoom or WhatsApp). We are all quickly adapting to keeping in touch using technology and our Wills experts have found that clients are comfortable working with us in this new way. Whilst keeping to Government and NHS advice, we will always work with our client in a way that best suits them and brings them peace of mind. Before you start the process of making a Will, it is important that you prepare for the online or telephone meeting. Think about what questions you would like to ask; write a list of your assets and finances; decide who you wish to include in your Will and who you wish to oversee it (the Executor of your Will). 2. Before the coronavirus outbreak, documents relating to the Will process would be exchanged physically but that is obviously not possible at this time. Instead your documents will be exchanged via recorded post or email. 3. For a Will to be valid it must be signed in the presence of two witnesses. It means that three people must be physically present to sign the document; the Will maker and the two witnesses. Social distancing makes this difficult but a bit of creative thinking can get around the challenge

Anna-Marie Knipe at home and ready to help. Solicitor & Partner at Birchall Blackburn Law, Chair of the South Ribble Dementia Action Alliance, and Member of STEP and SFE. If you are unsure about how the Will process will work during this uncertain time, if you are concerned about social distancing during the witness signing or would just like to discuss the process in general then call an expert Wills solicitor. Our team will provide free and confidential initial advice before you have to make any decisions. Just call Anna-Marie on 01772 427 610 or email amknipe@birchallblackburn.co.uk.

Getting to Know You

Getting to Know You With Lynn McCann Occupation: Reachout ASC - based in Leyland, autism specialist teachers/trainers Place of Birth: Preston Marital Status: married to Steve 29 years Family: Two grown up children Hero: I’m a Christian, Jesus is my absolute hero Place to live: North Wales, by the Snowdonia coast, I’d like it to be sunny for at least half the year, though! Fear: Drowning. As a child I got stuck under bedclothes and had a massive panic. Since then, I can’t put my head under water. Family holiday: Outdoor activities, we used to canoe, climb, build dens, scramble, sail, gorge walk - great fun, great family building! Change about yourself: I’d be better at slowing down and resting. I’m hyperactive with two speeds - fast or dropping with exhaustion What makes me angry: Officials who lie. In my job, I see families being fobbed off with untruths and missing out on help and services they are entitled to. What motivates me to work hard: I work with children who try so hard to fit in to an education system that isn’t designed for the way they process, think and create. I know adjustments can be made and I want teachers etc to know there’s nothing wrong with the child, but one changed attitude, one changed life is worth working for. Favourite thing about my career: Having freedom and flexibility to develop our services in response to needs. I like being my own boss and trying new things. I never thought I’d write books, now I’ve written three! Proudest accomplishment: My team, they are all brilliant. Two are autistic, two are parents of autistic girls, they all bring something different. They are amazing and a privilege to work with. What makes me laugh: My son Matthew, a stand-up comedian. His dad Steve comes a close second.

What I wanted to be when I was small I always wanted to be a special needs teacher, I’m glad I got to fulfil my ambition. Favourite sport to watch or play: None, I’m not sporty at all, I’d rather read a book. Karaoke song: I wouldn’t inflict my singing on an audience. I love to sing 80s pop songs in the car when I’m alone. Nickname: I was called ‘Olive Oyl’ at school after Popeye’s girlfriend. I was very tall and skinny then. Hobbies: I love being creative - sewing, crafts, puppets, learning worship songs in Makaton (signing for people with learning disabilities), walking in our lovely local countryside. Superpower: I’d love to help people banish their worries and feel brave. Lottery win: It’d be a miracle - I’ve never played the lottery! Zoo animal: Giraffe Dinner Party: Jesus, Lydia, Mary and Martha from the Bible. I love these women who were independent and as important as the men. I’d love to chat with them about their work and ministries. Childhood Memory: Camping in North Wales. A family of six, we had a huge canvas tent in a field. One year a cows got into the field and mooed into our tent. Glass half full or half empty: Half full - always hope in any situation. Desert Island items: I’m a dreamer, not practical, so a book, a tent and a pillow Favourite school subject: English - the best teacher, Mr Morgan, just brough the subject alive. When I left, he gave me a copy of ‘How to write a novel, trusting I would one day. I’ve written one, but it’s not published!! First job: a newspaper delivery girl at 13 I’d never do again: a running race Looking forward to: Heaven

Please can you help? An appeal from the Wade Hall Community Association: We are looking for donations of food, toys, gifts and vouchers etc. The Wade Hall Community Association usually open up on Christmas Day for people who need somewhere to go, have something to eat and drink and enjoy good company. They chat, play games, play pool, watch TV, read a book and more. This is for anyone who is homeless, lone parents and their children, older members of the community, indeed anyone who is lonely. This year is going to be different. We might not be able to open our doors because of these unprecedented times, but what we can do, with your help, is make sure these people get the Christmas they deserve. We’ve all heard that it is better to give than to receive, and we are a voluntary organisation that give our free time to help people in the community To know that you are helping to make someone’s life just a little bit easier or helping to make someone happy is an indescribable feeling. As I’m sure you realize, while you are busy buying and making gifts for your loved ones this Christmas season, there are so many people in need. While most of us take for granted having a

Merry Christmas, some among us can only pray and dream about it. For those of you with children in your lives, you know their joy when they open gifts on Christmas Day. It’s very sad for me to think of all the children in our area who won’t have even one gift to open this year. In fact, they may not even have a meal to eat on this special day. But there is hope for them, and that hope is you. Here at the centre, we pride ourselves on the help we have provided to those in need for so long. But we honestly couldn’t do it without your generosity. Please consider putting one more person on your Christmas gift list this year, and send a donation. If you know someone who needs help please can you contact us on 01772465006 or pass this on. The Place, Wade Hall Centre, 73 Royal Avenue, Leyland PR25 1BX Thank you

Leyland great granny skydives for children’s charity

A LEYLAND great granny has marked her 90th birthday in style this weekend, by jumping 15,000ft from a plane to raise money for Derian House Children’s Hospice. Patricia Baker, of Farington said: “I can’t explain how it felt. Wonderful but scary,” after completing the daredevil feat at Black Knights Parachute Centre in Lancaster. She was cheered on by daughter Carole and sons Michael and Stephen, and has raised almost £3,000 which will be split between the hospice and Hillside specialist school in Longridge, which supports her seven-year-old decided to do one big thing - a skydive! great-grandson Max. Before she was allowed to take to the skies, she required a letter of approval from her doctor – but her GP originally refused to entertain it. Not to be deterred, Pat took matters into her own hands and completed a rigorous medical test which saw her harnessed-up and suspended from the ceiling, then timed holding her legs up to see if she could land safely. She then returned to the GP surgery armed with her results and was duly given the all-clear. Pat took her training for the challenge seriously, doing 50 sit-ups a day and morning stretches. “I wouldn’t have done this for myself,” said Patricia, “but I thought I’d like to do it to raise money for children. I wanted to do it for Derian House because the children there don’t get to have a full life like I’ve had and I think the work Carole, 59, of Penwortham, said she was bursting the staff do is fantastic.” with pride at her “inspirational” mother’s Caroline Taylor, Communications and Marketing achievement. Manager at Derian House Children’s Hospice, She said: “We got lucky with the weather and said: “We see some truly amazing fundraising had perfect blue skies. Eat Well This Autumn When November arrives with its colder weather and darker nights, it can feel hard to see the positives, especially when money’s tight. This is the perfect season for meals that are comforting, filling and cheap. That’s not to say they can’t be healthy! With a bit of time and planning, your family can enjoy amazing, nutritious comfort food without breaking the bank. We know this because part of our work here at Christians Against Poverty (CAP) is to create budgets that prioritise food and household bills for people struggling to make ends meet. Firstly, raid your cupboards. It can be hard to find inspiration for a meal when looking into an empty cupboard, so here’s a tip: each week or month, stock up on one or two handy basics to keep in the cupboard, such as a tin of chopped tomatoes or some herbs and spices. Most will last for a few months so can work out as good value for money in the long-run. With a wellstocked cupboard, you’re less likely to reach for a ready meal when you’re craving something quick and filling. Search ‘What you need in your store cupboard’ to get started. Fail to plan, plan to fail. Experts suggest that creating a meal plan before you go shopping can help keep costs low. Before you head out to the supermarket, decide on your meals for the next week and what you need to buy, bearing in mind what you’ve already got in your store cupboard. Stick to your list while shopping to avoid unnecessary impulse buys. Spotted something in the reduced section or an offer? Ask yourself: Is it on my list? Is it a genuine bargain? Am I going to use it straight away or can I freeze it? If it’s ‘yes’ to all three, then pop it in the trolley. Get excited about cooking. Cooking doesn’t have to be repetitive and boring. Check out jamieoliver.com/family/ money-saving-recipes or

See if your local supermarket offers a free magazine – these often include a range of seasonal recipes to suit all kinds of budgets. If you’re struggling with debt and are worried about affording food for yourself and your family, please get help as quickly as possible from a free debt counselling service like CAP. In the Garden

A monthly gardening column with Debbie Noblett from The Plant Stall, Leyland Market

Well here we are in November already, heading towards Christmas at an alarming rate! Mid November is about the time to bring your hyacinths in out of the dark for flowering at Christmas. Bring them out into a warm light place, water them sparingly and watch them develop into beautiful fragrant flowers. If they get too tall, you may need to give them some support by staking. Don’t throw them away after they’ve flowered, cut the flowering stems off and let the leaves die back naturally. You can plant them outside or leave them for next year. You may have cut your lawn for the last time, so clipping around the edges will neaten it all off. Keep leaves raked off, put them into a compost bin as leaf mould is a good compost and top dresser. You should leave a few around for the worms to pull back underground, or pile them up in a sheltered spot, hedgehogs are always looking for somewhere to hibernate over Winter. If you have garden fires or remove piles of twigs and garden debris, check there are no hibernating hedgehogs in there first. Before Winter sets in, aerate your lawn by spiking it with a fork or using a lawn aerator. If you have a pond, it’s an idea to net it to stop all leaves, debris etc falling into it. Remove pond weed and leave it at the side

for a couple of days to allow insects and pond life to find their way back home. You can lift, split and re-locate dormant plants, divide mature clumps of rhubarb when they’re dormant, tidy up strawberry plants by removing all dead leaves and runners. Invest in a water butt or make sure yours is cleaned out, they can collect a lot of sediment in the bottom. Plants to look out for if you want some Autumn/Winter colour are primulas, wallflowers, pansies, violas, cyclamen, ivy, Sweet Williams, heathers, ajuga, ornamental cabbage, all are ideal for ground, pot, or basket planting. It’s a good time of year to clean the greenhouse out, protect all greenhouse plants with fleece or bubble wrap, take care of Cordylines and palms by tying them up with bubble wrap to insulate them and stop the centres getting wet. They can rot from the centre if they get wet, then freeze. Well we can’t get down in the dumps, it’s onwards and upwards as we head towards December, as we don’t really know what’s in store for us, take care and remember Face, Hands, Space! Take care, Debbie
