Leader Comment June 2020 HOW good it feels to be back, if under strict guidelines, after two months of lockdown. These are still strange times but at least Leyland Leader, along with many other local businesses is slowly opening up. Keep calm and carry on - yet stay safe and stay alert is the order of the day for us and everyone around. This is our belated 15th birthday issue, we were unable to print in April and May, so June 2020, issue 108 is a ‘celebration’ for several reasons. Leyland Leader began back in April 2005 with a simple 40-page black and white magazine with a card cover and plain paper. Since then we have progressed to a monthly glossy with, on average, 88 full colour pages. This ‘risen from the ashes of the pandemic’ edition is slightly reduced in pages because, understandably, not everyone is getting back to work yet. Coronavirus - the C-Word, it’s been on people’s hearts and minds for months and not just in Leyland, or the UK. Coronavirus is global and it’s affected everyone’s lives, has it not? It’s not something any of us have ever experienced in our lives and, I suppose, the hardest part is not knowing where it’s leading, when is it going to end and what kind of world will be left when it’s run its course.

Self isolation and social distancing have become features of our lives. It was with a heavy heart, and following government guidance, we took the decision to suspend the printing and delivery of Leyland Leader for a minimum of two months. Prospects for the economy and ‘normal life’ are still not great , but the wheels of industry, locally and nationally are beginning to turn again. We are grateful to all the many local businesses - hundreds of them - who have supported us over our 15 years of serving Leyland. It’s especially gratifying to know that most of our current supporters - your local trades, businesses, organisations and charities are keen to continue to work with us. Let’s support our local businesses, they need us more than ever as we move forward - uncertain times, uncharted waters, but if we work together, we can make the most of them. Also, remember to thank the many key workers who have continued to battle through this crisis to keep the country going. They are all simply wonderful and we owe them our heartfelt gratitude. Stay safe! Keith and Ruth Bradshaw

We are still here if you need us... We’re just working a little differently to support our community’s legal needs. We are still able to offer a quality legal service whilst respecting social distancing, self-isolating and shielding. Like a lot of Leyland’s community businesses our teams are working hard from home to assist people going through this uncertain time. Please get in touch to talk about how we can work with you whilst keeping you and your loved ones safe and healthy.

Wrights Opticians, Leyland Message from Sarah Wright (Owner)

During these very strange last few months, Wrights Opticians has remained open for emergency eye exams, supplied glasses and contact lenses to people in their homes and had a 24/7 phone line for any concerns. Moving forward, we hope to re-open fully on July 4th, but it won't quite be 'business as usual' - we have taken precautions to protect both our staff and our wonderful patients, from Covid-19. We will be wearing PPE for all eye exams, have perspex screens around our front desks, will have longer opening hours in order to minimise the amount of people in the building at any one time. We will be cleaning the testing room in between patients, supplying hand gel to everyone entering, have marked out our two metre

Sarah Wright positions and moved furniture around accordingly. In addition, we have all taken our online 'Covid-19 prevention training' (we all scored 100%!). We hope to welcome back patients old and new and very much look forward to seeing you all - we have missed you and hope you are well. Sarah :-) 5 Chapel Brow Leyland PR25 3NH

Strictly legal with Anna-Marie Knipe Can I make a Will during the coronavirus pandemic? Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, we have seen an increase in the demand for our Wills service. Not only are people looking to secure their family’s financial future during a worrying time, but also many people have found that social distancing has given them more time and a rare opportunity to do something that many put off. The simple answer is ‘yes’ Our Wills and Probate Team feel that helping people to make a Will is an essential service. We have made the necessary steps to maintain our Wills service while safeguarding the health and wellbeing of our staff and clients. Our team members are available and working hard from home to carry on serving the public and can be instructed to make your Will.

as long as all three are present and can see each other sign. For example, as long as you keep to social distancing guidelines, Wills can be witnessed by neighbours over the garden wall or through a window. The witnesses then add their signature, name and address in case they need to be contacted at a later date to prove the signing of the will. We advise that everyone uses their own pens and wear gloves if they are available.

How is making a Will different at this time? Essentially there are three main ways that making a Will whilst social distancing will be different: 1. Usually our Wills and Probate service would take place in a face-to-face consultation but the meeting can now done by phone or online video (Facetime, Zoom or WhatsApp). We are all quickly adapting to keeping in touch using technology and our Wills experts have found that clients are comfortable working with us in this new way. Whilst keeping to Government and NHS advice, we will always work with our client in a way that best suits them and brings them peace of mind. Before you start the process of making a Will, it is important that you prepare for the online or telephone meeting. Think about what questions you would like to ask; write a list of your assets and finances; decide who you wish to include in your Will and who you wish to oversee it (the Executor of your Will). 2. Before the coronavirus outbreak, documents relating to the Will process would be exchanged physically but that is obviously not possible at this time. Radio Leyland is one year old!

Earlier this year, in the middle of ‘lockdown,’ Radio Leyland celebrated its first birthday as the local FM community radio station for Leyland and the surrounding area, broadcasting on 104.8 FM, online at radioleyland.com and on your smart device. Leyland’s local all-volunteer radio station started life with the setting up of a non-profit company in late 2014. An initial 3-day experimental broadcast followed, in June 2015, as Leyland Festival Radio. June 2017 saw the team dip another toe in the water with a one-week FM broadcast in support of Leyland Festival. Soon after, to the team’s surprise (and much earlier than expected) Ofcom invited further new applications for local community radio licences. After a mad scramble to complete the application process, Ofcom offered the group a five-year community radio licence in December 2017 and the station began its permanent radio service on 1 April 2019 with a show hosted in partnership by Rev Phil Gough and

this magazine’s proprietor, Keith Bradshaw. The launch was attended by station volunteers, sponsors, advertisers and supporters, sharing breakfast supplied by The Mill at St Catherine’s. The station now boasts an estimated 7,000+ weekly listeners, with around 30 volunteers producing a wide range of programmes aimed primarily at the over-35s.

‘...a unique package that offers something for virtually everybody…’ Founder and station manager Brian Ashman (pictured at the British Commercial Vehicle Museum opposite) believes the station’s strength lies in its diversity and openness: “Radio Leyland is proud of the wealth and variety of talent, knowledge and passion that exists among our volunteers. They are our lifeblood and it’s their commitment and dedication that enables us to produce relevant local programming that’s simply not available elsewhere. “Apart from local news and interviews in our Breakfast show, a high-energy Drivetime, vintage music from the 1920s to the 1970s in our daily dementiafriendly afternoon show, we have a great range of specialist shows. “It all forms a unique package that offers something for virtually everybody locally, whether they enjoy rock, indie, jazz-funk, swing, country, soul, music from a particular decade – we have it all. “We also provide space for innovation and experimentation. By way of example, our Myths and Music series, hosted by Alex Wruk, produced some of the most dramatic, compelling and unforgettable story narration we’ve ever heard – a good reason, if anyone needed one, for visiting our listen again facility at mixcloud.com/Leyland_festival_radio. “Of course, none of this would be possible without our marvellous listeners, our hard-working volunteers, and, in particular, the many local businesses who support us with show sponsorship and advertising, including Leyland Market, Coopers Taxis, Birchall Blackburn Law, C&W Berry Ltd., and members of our 100 Club. “We’re also deeply indebted to Leyland Leader, the BB4B networking group

and to local Christian bookshop and publisher 10ofthose.com for all their support and kindness.” Here’s to a second successful year for Leyland’s own radio station!

Rosemere Cancer Foundation At Rosemere Cancer Foundation, we fund

projects to benefit the thousands of people diagnosed with cancer locally – from here in Leyland and South Ribble, to across the whole of Lancashire and the South Lakes.

fundraising events have had to be cancelled or postponed, we still need the vital funds that they raise – these projects wouldn’t exist without charitable donations, and we are hugely grateful to those that are continuing to support us. The projects we raise money for are outside the scope of the NHS, but they make a huge difference to our patients. We fund things like state-of-the-art equipment, cutting-edge clinical research, training to help our staff be the best they can be, or projects to help create a warmer, less stressful hospital environment. The ongoing Coronavirus pandemic is a difficult time for us all, particularly those in our hospitals, whether they are staff or patients. At cancer units across the region, clinical teams continue to care for those living with cancer – their care cannot stop in the face of Coronavirus, because cancer does not stop in the face of Coronavirus. Therefore, our mission to fund world class cancer care can’t stop either. Come what may, we must continue to provide the same levels of funding to lifechanging projects, for the benefit of our patients. At this time, when many of our

St Catherine’s Hospice

St Catherine’s Hospice is working hard to carry on providing its specialist care and support during the pandemic – and is reaching out in new and innovative ways to help even more members of the community in these challenging times. Work has been carried out on the inpatient unit to provide six extra beds, meaning the charity can now care for up to 25 people at the hospice in Lostock Hall – including people with Coronavirus who require palliative care. Along with the specialist care provided by St Catherine’s for people in their own homes, the charity is helping to keep up to 250 patients out of hospital at any one time, relieving pressure on the NHS and supporting families affected by lifeshortening illnesses to experience the best possible quality of life until the end of life. Staff are adapting the ways they work right across the organisation to face the current challenges and protect the hospice’s vital services; supporting patients and their loved ones in a range of ways from diagnosis to bereavement. Other developments made by St Catherine’s in light of the COVID-19 outbreak include: *Staff from fundraising, The Mill café and other teams have been re-trained to help cover certain tasks on the inpatient ward and reception. * Nurses have returned from retirement to help cover shifts as demand for services increases. * Clinical Nurse Specialists who care for people in their own homes, and the Lymphoedema nurses who usually operate from the onsite Woodside Clinic, are providing care and support remotely where possible. * Bereavement volunteers have been recruited, and counselling services and the volunteer

befriending service are all being offered remotely via phone and video calls. * Wellbeing calls are being made to valued volunteers, and those who usually attend the monthly bereavement and carers’ drop-in sessions. * A food delivery service is being offered for vulnerable or shielding volunteers and those who attend the monthly support sessions. * The St Catherine’s support team is in regular contact with relatives of patients being cared for on the inpatient unit who are unable to visit. * The hospice’s innovative Specialist Palliative Care Advice Line has been enhanced, enabling healthcare professionals to speak with the medical team 24 hours a day. * Clinical educators are further embracing technology and offering video training from the hospice’s Learning Zone, to share their expert knowledge and skills with other healthcare providers including care homes and district nurses.

67 Meanwhile, St Catherine’s is working creatively on possible new plans to boost income later in the year, to help make up some of the shortfall caused by the temporary closure of its charity shops and The Mill café, and the cancellation of summer fundraising events. * A new version of the sponsored Moonlight and Memories Walk has been launched, encouraging supporters to take on the four or 10-mile challenge in their own time throughout June. * Anyone who makes a Yellow Ribbon Dedication will receive a ribbon in the post to personalise and display at home or in their garden this year, as the hospice can’t welcome supporters into its grounds to view the tributes on Yellow Day as usual. * And The Mill café is offering a contactless Click and Collect version of its popular Afternoon Tea, including children’s and vegetarian options. The team at St Catherine’s wishes to thank its communities for continuing to support the hospice during these difficult days. Donations have been received in the form of PPE, chocolates, hand creams and more, and supporters have been pulling out the stops to raise funds in a variety of inspiring ways, from someone covering miles around Leyland on a unicycle, hula hooping for an hour every day for a week, and a little boy completing a Lego marathon.

To find out more about the Moonlight and Memories Walk and Yellow Ribbon Dedications, or to enter the hospice’s Car Raffle or join the weekly lottery, call 01772 629171 or visit www.stcatherines.co.uk. In the Garden

A monthly gardening column with Debbie Noblett from The Plant Stall, Leyland Market Well here we are, now in ‘Stay Alert’ mode and it’s brilliant to see so many people and families having a go at gardening, planting, growing veg and sowing seeds to fill their days, it’s a new experience for some. How things change and as we can’t have our stall outside Leyland Market, we are also having to change how we operate. We’ve moved from the dinosaur age to selling through our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ NoblettsNursery/. This is with an enormous amount of help from our daughter Sarah, who returned from travelling In Asia to escape Covid 19, she’s had to have an awful lot of patience! We are now taking orders through messaging our Facebook page or contacting 07437 743597, our dedicated contact number, it’s a whole new learning experience for us, but it’s working! Customers are asking lots of questions and seem to be enjoying the big learning curve of growing, being creative and seeing things flourish in the garden. So what are we doing in our gardens? If you're thinking of making a hanging basket, choose a variety of plants for a mixed one, trailing geraniums, fuchsias, bacopa, million bells, trailing petunias. with helichrysum, nepeta or lysamachia for trailing or added greenery, give a good display. If your thinking of fuchsias, upright or bush varieties can give a thick tidy style, Winston Churchill, Ernie and Lambada are good varieties to use, if you want a good trailing variety Sir Matt Busby, Claudia, Dark Eyes or Campanella make spectacular displays. However there are lots to choose from so it’s down to personal taste. Trailing begonias, trailing geraniums or million bells (calibrachoa) also make an ideal hanging

basket. Non stop begonias also make a colourful and showy display. It’s all down to what you like. Use new compost in your basket, the feed in this will last 4-6 weeks, as your basket grows it will need more watering and weekly liquid feed, or you can buy slow release feed pellets, which can be added onto the surface, these release over time in warm temperatures. Regular dead heading is a must for all baskets, a once a week job is all it takes. If there is a plastic liner in your basket, slit it for drainage purposes as your basket can become waterlogged and damage the root system. So it’s full steam ahead for hanging baskets. Take care, stay safe, stay alert, and do enjoy your garden, we’ve had amazing weather, the birds are forever tweeting and we hope to see some of you in the future, back on Leyland Market. Bye for now. Debbie.

69 Reflections on Lockdown Lockdown has given us plenty of time for reflection. I keep hearings the phrase “Whatever the new normal will be.” I truly believe it can be what we want it to be. We all have a greater appreciation, quite rightly, of those that contribute so much to society. Personally, I will also value small businesses more once the economy starts. We all like convenience, but what you lack with the large chains is that warm, friendly personal touch that you get with small local businesses. Local craftspeople, hairdressers and coffee shops etc put in so much work and contribute so much to the local economy. Leyland Leader has become a valuable resource for local business, I have used many of them myself and I am determined to use many more of them in the future. Mother Nature has sent us to our rooms to think about what we have done. It’s time to appreciate our surroundings a bit more, shop local, use local trades and support local businesses.
