The Lake Tahoe School Pre-Kindergarten “Happyland” program supports the curious and adventurous nature of young children through a rich and interactive curriculum designed by career experts in the field of early childhood education with the goal of delivering a strong foundation for academic and social success. Enjoyable, developmentally appropriate opportunities to expand foundational academic and social skills are provided each day by both the core PreK teachers and the school-wide enrichment teaching staff. Weekly cross-curricular themes inspire children to deepen their understanding of topics explored. The spacious PreK classroom is intentionally designed with spaces that encourage and facilitate exploration of language arts, cooking, technology, Spanish, math, drama, building, social studies, arts and crafts, science, and music. The children are supported by the staff (in close coordination with their families) as they personally grow and acquire academic understandings that will lead to a lifelong love of learning.

The LTS language arts curriculum invites children to embrace reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Innovative activities engage our students, catalyzing skill acquisition and laying the foundation for a positive lifelong relationship with reading and effective communication.
The Spanish curriculum introduces LTS PreK students to the Spanish language and culture. Children explore commonly used Spanish vocabulary and phrases through songs, games, books, and activities. As students differentiate between Spanish and English, they hone their language discrimination skills and improve their primary language skills.
MAT H E MAT I C S
S CI ENCE
LTS PreK children explore math informally and in small group instruction. The child-friendly math area is well- stocked with appealing math manipulatives designed to develop the following skills: numeral identification, number values, shape recognition, addition, subtraction, grouping, patterning, classifying, time, fractions, geometry, measurement, spatial relations, and problem-solving.
LTS students are exposed to meaningful science experiences at an early age. The preschool science curriculum centers around active exploration of our natural world and its phenomena to nurture a child’s natural curiosity. Our everyday learning environment focuses on interactive, hands-on approaches using multimedia materials in a lab setting. The PreK science curriculum coincides with weekly preschool themes.

MU S IC & AR T
The LTS PreK Social Studies curriculum features weekly themes designed to expand each child’s understanding of self, others, and the world. Themes include explorations of the family and local community and expand to include the global community. Lessons include geography and science and include time for team building.
The LTS PreK music program fosters young children’s natural love of music through opportunities to sing, dance, play instruments, and cultivate interests in a variety of musical genres. The art program encourages creative self-expression through the exploration of a variety of art media, focusing on the creative process.

P HYSI CAL ED U CATION
LTS Happyland delivers strong social skills with a curriculum woven throughout each day in the form of class meetings where the children respectfully help each other gain important social understandings. This is accomplished through behavior modeling by staff and instructional skits written by older children and shared with the PreK students.
LTS students engage actively in a spectrum of movement experiences that are closely related to the PreK weekly theme. Each student strives toward the PE program objectives by participating in a variety of individual and group activities that allow students of all ability levels to be challenged.
