It has been a long wait this year but summer has finally arrived with this, our main summer issue of Key to Mijas Costa. In this issue we cover many topics. Since losing the free to air programmes on the TV, we now have no option but to view these via the internet. This has however slowed down internet service considerably not only for those viewing the TV, but more importantly for businesses during peak viewing time. Hans from Wise has some news and views on this, so please see page 39 for more information. On page 52 there is a word of advice from Victoria from Iberdata 21 to Estate Agents wanting a ‘slice of the action’ with SAREB. Summer is however all about having fun with family and friends. Firstly the fine Thai Restaurant Ssalathai in Playa Marina graces our front cover as it is celebrating its 4th an-

KEY BEAUTY Look Younger with a Non-Surgical Face Lift WHAT CAN IT DO FOR ME? If you don’t want invasive surgery but want to look younger and fresher faced, a non-surgical face lift might be right for you.

By Hair Magic

HOW DOES IT WORK? We apply face pads; what these do is work the facial muscles. When you go to the gym and work out, your muscles harden and grow slightly; when you work the muscles in your face, the same thing happens. So your face will look full which will greatly reduce the amount of lines. As the muscles are harder this gives a great lift. WILL I SEE THE RESULTS IMMEDIATELY? Yes, from the first treatment you will see a definite difference, although you will need 10 treatments to get a good lift. As in the gym, your muscles continue to grow and harden for 24 hours so you must wait at least 24 hours before you have the next treatment. You need to have your 10 treatments as quickly as possible. So we recommend say Monday, Wednesday and Friday, or if it’s not possible to come to the salon 3 times in a week, come 2 days for 5 weeks instead of 3 days for 3 weeks. HOW LONG DOES IS LAST? You will need to come back once a month to keep your lift. But if you want to carry on lifting, then you can come twice or three times a month. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? We have a special offer now. We charge 25 euros a treatment but if you pay for all 10 treatments, it is only 200 euros. If you need any more advice please contact Tracy at Hair Magic.

The features appear spectacularly “lifted” and the facial contour is reshaped. The face is lifted, wrinkles and fine lines are visibly diminished, the neck skin is refined and the complexion appears more youthful. An immediate lifting effect from the first session! As soon as the CatioLift treatment is over, do a mirror test on half of your face. You will see the difference! Recommended as an intensive 3-session treatment, for a visibly more youthful you or incorporate this with the CatioVital for an extra boost. This is available with a full facial for 50.00 Euros or as a 30-minute express treatment for 36.00 Euros.

KEY FEATURE Making Networking Fun When did you last network and have fun at the same time? Networking doesn’t need to be a chore (even for the introvert). Whilst networking was previously a function of business, the creation of social media has meant it has become normal to make virtual friends and contacts via the web. Social media became just that… social whichever media you use to connect and share. You may never use your new friend’s services, however the friendship you make in the online world, (and, if you are fortunate, in “real” life too) may determine whether you recommend, or refer your new friend’s business to someone who needs their product or services. Going along to networking events not only increases your circle of friends, but also of influence. Moving through a process; ‘know me, like me, follow me’, can take time and commitment. Nonetheless, people buy people (they always have and always will do) so it’s important to create those connections with other businesses, make friends, be social and as a consequence share your experience and expertise. Would you head to a networking event to buy a car, or property? Probably not; however, it wouldn’t deter you from connecting with the person behind the Car Salesperson or Real Estate Agent. As an expat, the online world through Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and Google+ make it so much easier to join and connect with local communities for the area you live in, bars, gyms and shops you visit, the Town Hall and more. By Ali Meehan, Costa Women end of 2010 as a community for Women to do just that – connect and share, whether you are a newcomer, or one of our wonderful veterans of expat life in Spain. Rather like an online water cooler, Women can congregate around their laptops and iPads etc. to find out more about life in Spain, ask those important questions, tell their stories, explore new connections and share their businesses, charities and hobbies. Costa Women also offer offline meet ups too via business networking events in three locations on the Costa del Sol (Marbella, Mijas Costa and East of Malaga) as well as very social meet ups in Fuengirola (morning and evening), Calahonda, Marbella and soon to be added Gibraltar. Most of the events are free to attend as is membership to the website. I hope to network with you soon wherever you find us! KEY HEALTH “Get Results”

By Anne Stark

Only treatments that are tried and tested will be on the list that I offer to my clients. NEW – Shrinking Violet Body Inch Loss Wrap This is a revolutionary method to remove unwanted fat by Lipolysis. Obviously fat reduction varies depending on your build. Lipolysis offers pain-free slimming and breaks down fat inside the actual cells where triglycerides are changed to free fatty acid so that they can be excreted in tissue fluid and further transported to the lymph vessels. Shrinking Violet is an excellent jump-start to a new, slimmer YOU. I would recommend The Shrinking Violet Body Wrap treatment followed two days later by a Genie Slimming & Cellulite or Lymphatic Treatment as one of my “Get Results” treatments. Treatments can be taken as a weekly treatment, i.e. 1 violet wrap and 3 Genie slimming treatments or to kick start your special diet – or just to detox, which all of us should do regularly. For that special occasion, this wrap will leave your skin unbelievably soft, luminous as if you had turned the clock back. You will notice the maximum effect after 24 hours. If you combine it with Genie – WOW!!! This product can only be applied by professional, qualified beauticians and cannot be applied at home. It covers the whole body but part treatments such as arms, legs or stomach can be done separately. MyScara Eyelash Colour Myscara semi-permanent eyelash colour is perfect for the summer. Just 24 hours after application you will be able to swim and enjoy summer activities without any worries. One application last approximately 3 weeks. Genie Non-surgical Face Lift Treatment This is also known as the 10-minute miracle and is more popular than ever with women and men alike. See excellent results after just one treatment. I guarantee this inexpensive treatment will give you unbelievable results. Regular Key to Mijas Costa readers will know that a year ago Inez got married. After just 10 treatments she looked like her younger sister! Now she is at it again. She combines it with her Herbal Life lifestyle (not obligatory). The results are amazing. Your muscles have a memory and much as when you exercise your body, they will respond even after the first treatment. We all have a special occasion and want to look our best, be it for a photograph or maybe for your daughter’s wedding when you will have to see your ex again! The marriage between Genie Take 10 and Faith Miracle Face Lift Mask gives you dramatic results. You will love this combination which lifts, tones and firms, leaving the skin looking youthful and radiant. You can also have a Faith Lift Mask facial or combine it with all my “Get Results” facials. If you are after no-nonsense tried and tested treatments with results for both face and body with the best value for money, you know who to call. See you soon. KEY HEALTH The Chill Zone Are you sometimes drawn to another person from the first moment you meet them? I am not talking about on a physical level, but you know you are going to gel from the first encounter, before even knowing anything about them. That was what happened when I met Gail Nelson Snell of The Chill Zone. It was at a Costa Women Business breakfast recently in La Cala and we both knew instantly that we had something to offer each other. Gail is a Metaphysical Practioner, a Self Development Facilitator and a Fully Qualified, Licensed and Insured Metaphysician. Gail practices in all aspects of counselling and life coaching and specialises in Domestic Violence. I think the best overview to help you get to know Gail better is to reproduce here the section about her from her website www.the-chill-zone.com as it says it all, including the exceptionally reasonable prices: “About Gail Gail invites you to see life from a new and different perspective, using a practical, spiritual and psychological approach. With this in mind, she offers Metaphysical Counselling, Life Coaching, Spiritual Counselling and courses in Awareness, Meditation, Reiki and Energy Healing. She offers her experience to change your life, if you are ready to take that journey. Time for Change Gail has had a varied working life and faced many challenges. She has been homeless and a one parent family bringing up three sons. She discovered Metaphysics 20 years ago and that taught her that all in life is inter-connected. She worked with a practitioner to change every area of her life. After all the tribulations she went through, a vision began to emerge of helping others find their right journey and The Chill Zone is the manifestation of that vision”.

What is The Chill Zone? Again, I am going to reproduce from The Chill Zone website as I couldn’t describe it any better: “The Chill Zone is located in the Costa del Sol, in beautiful hillside surroundings between the two picturesque white villages of Alhaurin El Grande and Coin - you can’t afford not to visit! Just 40 minutes from Malaga and 30 minutes from Marbella, this luxury villa is set within a tranquil urbanisation opposite the Sierra de la Nieves mountains. The villa has been specifically built to accommodate guests from around the world and its owners, Gail and Michael, wish to offer their visitors peace, harmony and tranquility during their stay whether you’re staying bed and breakfast in the apartment or on one of the workshops available. The chill zone is perfect for couples, small groups of friends and mothers and daughters to spend a relaxing few days together. Its boutique style luxury accommodation is available on a bed & breakfast or holiday apartment rental basis and also for workshops. In order to ensure that guests have an opportunity for complete rest and relaxation, The Chill Zone at Villa La Paz is available to adults only”. Gail is in the process of writing three separate books about her life and I can’t wait to serialise them here in Key to Mijas Costa magazine. Please visit the website for much more information. I am sure that I am going to hear about The Chill Zone from many of our readers. Enjoy! After Gail and I finished our business, we got to chat about this and that and it transpires that although we have gone very different routes during our lives, we were both born at the same hospital and now we meet here many years later on the Costa del Sol!

KEY HEALTH Dental Implants

By Chris Weir, Sonrisa

Implant is the buzz word in Dentistry at the moment, everybody is talking about implants, many people want implants, but few actually know what one is. Basically, an implant is an artificial root made of titanium, which is screwed into the jawbone to facilitate the replacement of a lost tooth. To place an implant, the dentist drills into the jawbone, then screws the titanium implant into the bone, then leaves the implant for a few months to allow the bone to grow round it, then later he can fix a crown tooth to the titanium implant. You can fix crowns, bridges and dentures with implants; the implant provides an anchor for the prosthesis (crown, bridge, or denture). You must have healthy gums and bone for an implant to be successful, and some dentists will not place implants if you are a smoker, or have poor health. Implants protect the other teeth because they don’t put any strain on the adjacent teeth, and can be used to replace more than one missing tooth. They require little maintenance and can last a lifetime. Also you don’t have to do any preparation to the adjacent teeth. They have a 95% success rate, but it involves surgery and there may be complications such as infections in the bone, damage to blood vessels and sometimes nerve damage. Before you place the implant, the patient must have a thorough examination, radiographs and scans to ensure the patient is suitable for the successful placing of an implant.

14

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

What are the other options? A bridge would be the best alternative, but this requires using the adjacent teeth to fix the bridge. If the adjacent teeth are filled this is not a problem, but if they are healthy, virgin teeth, you would have to consider the merits of preparing them to accept a crown, as opposed to doing an implant. Bridges have an average life span of 10 to 20 years. The advantages of a bridge are: 1. No surgical procedure is required 2. Can be completed within 2/3 weeks (an implant may take 6 months to complete) 3. They cost less than an implant 4. When you make a 3 or multiple-unit bridge, you get 3 or more nice new teeth as opposed to one implant tooth. The other alternative would be a removable partial denture. The other 2 options are fixed permanently, but the denture is removable and has to cover a large area of the oral tissues for support. Whilst this is the least desirable option, there still is a place for dentures in dentistry and many people have worn dentures successfully for many years. At the end of the day your choice may come down to cost, in which case the implant is the costliest, and the denture the cheapest, with the bridge between the two, or you may not be prepared to wait for up to 6 months for the replacement tooth/teeth; that is the choice you will have to make.

KEY HEALTH 10 Health Screenings All Women Should Consider

Provided by Medilink

A Women’s health depends on a lot of factors. Every woman should make time for healthy habits, regular exercise, stress management, choosing the right foods as well as scheduling routine health screenings so potential problems can be identified early. In fact, health screenings can make keeping tabs on your health simple. So what screenings should you, be considering? 1. Blood pressure screening - Starting at age 18, every woman needs to have her blood pressure checked at least every two years. This health screening involves wrapping a cuff around the arm and pumping it up tightly. Ideal blood pressure for women is less than 120/80 mmHg (millimetres of mercury). 2. Cholesterol check - Women should have their cholesterol checked at least every five years starting at about age 20. This screening is important for decreasing the risk of heart disease; the test only involves drawing a blood sample. This can be done as a quick cholesterol screening, involving nothing but a finger-prick. If you get a high reading on this screening test, you should be referred to your healthcare practitioner for more complete testing. The ideal level is below 200 mg/dL (milligrams per decilitre) for total cholesterol. 3. Cervical smears and pelvic exams - Recommended to commence when a women becomes sexually active, they need to have a pelvic exam and cervical smear every year to check for any abnormalities in the reproductive system. To take the cervical smear, a speculum is placed inside the vagina to widen the vaginal canal, and your healthcare practitioner uses a small spatula to take cells from the cervix to detect any cell changes that can lead to cervical cancer. The cervical smear test is often combined with the CA125 blood test to check for Ovarian Cancer which is often referred to as the silent killer as the symptoms are often misdiagnosed. 4. Mammograms and breast exams - Starting around age 20, women should have a physical breast examination at least every three years until age 40, when this should be done annually, according to most experts. The screening process should include a physical examination and health education as well as an ultrasound or/and mammogram. Current European guidelines recommend 2-yearly breast screening for all women aged 40 plus. 5. Bone density screen - Women should start getting screened for osteoporosis with a bone density test at age

18

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

65. Women with risk factors for osteoporosis, such as having a slender frame or a fractured bone, should be screened earlier. For this test, you lie on the table while a scanning machine takes X-ray images of certain bones in your body. Healthy bones show a T-score (the measurement used to describe your bone density) of -1 or higher. The frequency of this health screening varies from woman to woman based on bone density and risk factors. 6. Blood glucose tests - Women should get a blood glucose test every three years starting at age 40 to test for diabetes or pre-diabetes. Before age 45, you may need to have your blood glucose levels tested if you have symptoms of diabetes or several risk factors. 7. Colon cancer screening - Colon cancer screening tests for women generally starts at the age of 50, but is dependent of many factors, such as family history. Screening for Colon cancer can vary from a simple stool sample to a blood test or the more traditional tests are the flexible sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy. 8. Body mass index - A full yearly physical exam includes measurements of your height and weight and a calculation of your body mass index (BMI). You can also calculate your BMI at home using an online BMI calculator which help’s indicate obesity and the risk of serious health conditions like diabetes and heart disease. 9. Skin examination - Women should examine their skin every month starting at age 18, and by the time they’re 20, a healthcare practitioner should conduct the examination during a routine check-up. Women should carefully inspect the skin all over their bodies, looking for any new moles or changes to existing moles to spot the early signs of skin cancer. 10. Dental check-up - Good dental health is important from the moment your first baby tooth sprouts, and all adult women need twice-yearly dental check-ups and cleaning. Regular dental check-ups, which involve examining the teeth and sometimes taking X-rays, can keep teeth healthy and spot early signs of decay or any problems with the mouth or teeth. KEY CHARITY Positively Pink & Blue Positively Pink & Blue are the Mijas-based charities offering FREE breast and prostate/testicular cancer screening to UK expatriates living on the Costa del Sol. During 2013 over 560 women accessed our FREE breast screening programme with thankfully only a small number of ladies receiving a positive diagnosis. Some of these ladies have already had their treatment and we are pleased to report they are doing well but Positively Pink continues to support those ladies who are still receiving treatment. 2013 saw the introduction of the Positively Blue programme to provide education, awareness and support for prostate and testicular cancer. In its 1st year Positively Blue had an overwhelming response to the 100 free appointments that were on offer, in fact the charity funded a total of 136 appointments for prostate cancer screening and educated them all on testicular cancer and the need to self examine. During the course of 2014 we have set ourselves the challenge of offering 1000 free breast screenings and 200 free Prostate blood tests/testicular cancer screening. The 2014 campaign began back in February and to date we have had a tremendous response but continue to offer appointments for later in the year (call 952 835 776 now to secure your place). For us to continue to be able to offer these FREE services we need your support, as we need to raise the necessary funds to pay for the mammograms, ultrasounds and PSA blood tests. As a charity

we are very proud of the fact that ALL of the monies we raise are used solely for the purpose of funding the professionals to carry out the radiography and blood analysis, all of the charities’ costs are absorbed by the 2 companies behind the charity. .... did you know 50,000 women and 300 men will hear the words “you have breast cancer” every year in the UK alone and this number continues to rise... 1 man dies every hour of Prostate cancer..... “early detection is your best protection” Help us to help you.... Events coming up... 21st September: 2014 Karting challenge at Funny Beach... take the opportunity to get your company or a group of friends involved in this fun packed day raising money for these fabulous charities. A team of 3 drivers is needed and 250.00 Euros of sponsorship to enter. For more information call 952 835 776. 9th October: The Pink & Blue Ball at the El Oceano Hotel & Spa. KEY HEALTH Thermal Auricular Therapy Now that the weather is improving and it feels like summer is here, our thoughts turn to the sandy beaches and our swimming pools. The summer months can bring lots of problems for people with sensitive ears either through flying or just enjoying themselves by the water. Thermal Auricular therapy is a natural, non-invasive way of treating the ears. Hopi Ear Candles (often shortened to Ear Candles) are hollow tubes traditionally made from organically-grown flax, extracts of honey, beeswax and herbs. These candles provide a non-invasive treatment of the ears which are used in a variety of conditions in a practice often know as Thermal Auricular Therapy. The use of ear candles is thought to be thousands of years old and was seen in Egypt, Greece and Rome, although it is the Native American Hopi Indian tribe that had the most recent influence on modern Europe and helped to term the phrase ‘hopi ear candle’. The treatment is very relaxing. The clients need only concern themselves with lying fairly still in a comfortable position whilst the hopi candle is gently inserted in their ear.

20

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

By Patricia Kaines When lit, the candles have a slight sucking action, often referred to as the chimney principle, drawing out impurities to the surface where they can be gently removed. Some of the wax can be found in the lower section of the candle after removal from the ear, or some could even work its way up to the surface 24-48 hours later. The rising air inside the ear sets up a vibration which gently massages the eardrum. This can help to regulate the pressures involved inside the ear. The flow of air within the candle creates a circulation of concentrated vapour. This is both soothing and calming and protects the irritated areas. The session is not complete until I have given the client a facial massage using the Manual Lymphatic Drainage routine. This helps with further drainage both of the ears and sinuses and increases relaxation. So why not give me a call and book a session and discover for yourselves this wonderful and gentle treatment. Appointments can be made either by calling me directly on 666 170 868 or through Clinica Medicare in La Cala de Mijas 952 835 776.

KEY HEALTH The Natural Pink Pill has arrived Let’s talk about sex There are moments in life when women may feel a lack of desire, pleasure or comfort. Our sexual life can become unfulfilling for various reasons. Modern living can place huge pressure on women. Stressful jobs, hectic social lives, health problems and raising a family are just a few common factors that can prevent us from having the sex life we want. In fact, there are so many aspects of our life that may influence our sexual wellness that it is not a surprise to see an increasing number of women looking for a little help. Lady Prelox ® is here to help women feel sexier. It has been clinically tested on more than 200 women. Lady Prelox ® is a dietary supplement which contains a patented formula, and is the result of years of scientific research. Lady Prelox ® helps with sexual comfort and pleasure. Enjoy a fulfilling sex life and pleasurable sexual experiences. Discover how happy you feel about your sex life and test your libido by visiting ladyprelox.co.uk. World Exclusive! Lady Prelox ® is the first product in the world to offer sciencebased, natural support, specifically for women. This patented preparation, for daily use, contains key natural ingredients that work together to enhance pleasure, desire and comfort. “After years working with other products on the market, I am thankful that something natural and scientifically based is now available to women. It’s great when my clients walk through the door with more vitality and a cheeky grin on their face, Lady Prelox ® has definitely played a part in this!” Emma Ziff is a specialist in all aspects of sexual and intimacy issues and a member of the Royal Society of Medicine. The science of pleasure Research shows female sexual function can be more complex than that of men. Desire plays a much larger role for women in comparison to men. However, a woman’s sexual organs work similarly to men, depending on blood flow and lubrication to provide pleasure before and after intercourse. Blind placebo-controlled studies found that women taking Lady Prelox ® experienced a greater desire to feel intimate with their partner, which is a crucial element to female sexual satisfaction. The established medical tool for evaluating female sexual health is the Female Sexual Function Index (FSF1) which covers 19 key areas and devotes an extensive section to female arousal. Three key studies have shown that Lady Prelox ® boosts libido and increases arousal in women. Arousal is improved as a result of Pycnogenol ® working in connection with natural amino acid LCitrulline which encourages blood flow to the reproductive organs as well as the brain. In addition to this Pycnogenol ®, when taken with natural lipophilic nuero-protective antioxidants from rosehips which are another key ingredient used in Lady Prelox ®, may help the sensual needs of women to achieve a fully satisfactory sex life. How to take Lady Prelox ® Simply take 2 tablets every day, preferably with a meal. See the pack for more information. Suitable for vegans. Natural Ingredients Lady Prelox ® contains premium plant-based ingredients backed by scientific research to ensure the safety and efficacy of its formula. Pycnogenol ® (pic-noj-en-all) is a botanical extract from the bark

By Anni’s Vital Shop

of the French maritime pine tree and is known for its potent antioxidant properties. It is supported by 40 years of research, including 300 scientific publications, 100 clinical trials and 7,000 study participants. Pycnogenol ® is proven to expand and supports healthy blood vessels and proven to support and restore healthy production of nitric oxide which encourages better blood flow. Research into Pycnogenol for women’s mood and blood flow was the stimulus behind the development of Lady Prelox ®. Rosvita ® is a branded, patented rose hip extract that originates from the blossoms/fruit of the wild rose plant. It is a potent antioxidant, and contains vitamin C, which contributes to the normal psychological function and reduction of tiredness and fatigue. L-Arginine is an amino acid that plays an important role in nitric oxide mechanisms in the body. It is an essential precursor for the generation of nitric oxide, a messenger molecule which plays a key role for regulation of blood circulation. Nitric oxide is crucial for the regulation of blood flow to the genital area and plays a critical role in sex drive and sexual satisfaction. L-citrulline is a naturally occurring amino acid. As a precursor of L-Arginine, it has been shown to help open up veins and arteries to improve blood flow and reduce blood pressure. Our bodies change L-Citrulline into another amino acid called L-Arginine (mentioned above) and also to nitric oxide.

KEY ASTROLOGY Astrology 4 You! Do you ever think - what on earth did we do before Television and the Internet came on the scene? It seems like today’s technology has been around for ever but in our distant past - well a good few thousand years ago to be more precise - people actually sat around and observed things; like the night sky! They saw the stars and the same constellations in the sky every night until one night they noticed a star had moved! It’s hard to imagine what they must have thought but it certainly meant something strange ‘out there’ was happening! As they continued to observe the night sky, they saw there were 5 wandering stars, the ones we now know as Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn plus the Sun and Moon, all visible with the naked eye. It’s easy for us to recognise these planets (we can even check them out on our smart devices now!) but for the ancient world this was an amazing scientific breakthrough and from that moment on, those distant ancestors of ours never took their eyes off the seven wandering stars! Remember, this was their evening entertainment! Like a kind of game show they kept tabs and tracked the planets’ positions by marking off 12 sections of the sky designated by the constellations. Every time something happened, including a baby’s birth, they noted the positions of the seven planets and as these babies grew up, perhaps one became wealthy, one was quiet and timid, another was a daydreamer and so on. In each case the birth planets were noted, information was passed down and observations continued as the population grew in size. Over time, this was fine-tuned and based on exact mathematical calculations, but one thing they recognised even then, that it wasn’t just one planet’s position which denoted something about an individual’s character or personality, it was the configuration of all seven visible planets that really said something about the person. And something else… because the planets are always moving and making different angles to each other, no two people on earth have exactly

the same planetary configuration, not even twins! Thousands of years later, astrology is still the most powerful tool for uncovering our psychological makeup. Some will put it down to superstition because they find it hard to believe the physical, material world can tell us anything about what goes on in a human mind, yet they believe the material world can show us when it’s about to rain, when the oceans’ tides will ebb and flow pulled by the Moon’s gravity, or a tropical storm will grow into a hurricane! So, is it too much to imagine that humans could be affected by the ebb and flow of the universe? What do you think? Last month I presented an Astrology Seminar for Beginners, basically to explain in an easy to understand way what astrology is, where it came from and more importantly how we can begin to use it in our own lives. The afternoon started with a brief outline of how and when astrology came about, followed by an introduction to the basics, and hand-out sheets with the meanings of the planets, signs and houses using a simple system of keywords. There were lots of questions and answers too and below are just a few of the comments I received after the presentation: ‘Very well presented, so interesting and easy to understand’; ‘You have whet my appetite to find out more, many thanks’; ‘You made it simple to understand’, ‘Very informative and interesting’, ‘A very professional presentation’. If you would like to know more about Astrology and have it explained in simple terms, then come along to the next Seminar in Central Fuengirola (just a few minutes walk from the bus/train station) on Wednesday 2nd July 2pm4.30pm. The cost is 10 Euros, payable in advance and includes a light refreshment. KEY FEATURE Dario Meets the Rising Star Veronica Malka A few weeks ago I had the pleasure to be invited to lunch in Marbella at the MBI (Marbella Business Institute) and met several old friends who I had not seen for some time and also meeting new interesting people. At the table, I found myself facing a strongly built, charismatic Russian man and by his side a charming and attractive lady who introduced herself to me as Masha Malka, who also hailed from Russia and I soon discovered that Masha was the successful international best-selling author of “The One Minute Coach” -www.mashamalka.com. We soon struck up a friendly, humorous relationship and after they heard I was involved in composing music, Masha asked me to listen to a song (via headphones connected to a phone) recently recorded by her daughter, Veronica Malka. Considering we were in a busy restaurant with a lot of noise around, I recognised that this girl’s voice was a little special. We agreed to meet at a later date and I duly met Masha and her daughter, Veronica. The girl, who appeared to be about 17 years of age, was in fact 15, but had the talent and vocal maturity of a much older and experienced singer and was also a trained dancer. Masha explained to me that Veronica has been performing since the age of 8, singing, dancing, acting and modelling. She has performed on radio and TV interviews and sang live on the air many times. She also performs at charity events, big stage productions, as well as her own concerts and opening acts. Veronica was born in Marbella, Spain in 1999. She has both UK and USA nationalities. She speaks English, Spanish, and Russian and sings in Hebrew as well. One of her grandfathers is from Morocco and the other one is from Uzbekistan. Her grandmothers are from England and from Ukraine. Her mother is Russian/American and her father is British/Israeli.

In 2012 Veronica has become a laureate of the Moscow Meets Friends International Talent Festival produced by the famous violinist and conductor, Vladimir Spivakov, and travelled to Moscow in June to represent Spain. Also that year she became a finalist of the Reality Star international singing contest in Marbella, winning a 3rd place. In the following year of the Reality Star competition Veronica won a prize for the best original song that she sang at the finals. In January, 2013 Veronica was the only singer from Marbella to sing at the first Marbella Russian Movie Festival on the same stage with big Russian pop stars. In August, 2013 she was the youngest performer to sing at the annual Starlite Festival in Marbella (the same festival where Julio Iglesias, Tom Jones, Jamie Cullum, Enrique Iglesias, and other big stars perform each summer). She was also the only child who was invited to sing at the largest charity event of the year in Marbella - The Children for Peace. In 2014 Veronica signed a contract with the GME (General Music Entertainment) company - a global recording music company, to release her single “I Can’t Stop Falling”. Veronica attends Sotogrande International School which is considered to be one of the best international schools in Europe and is very strong in Performing Arts. Veronica’s full name is Veronica Rachel Rebecca Malka and her stage name is Verity Malka, and she is a rising star already making big news internationally! On the Youtube video mentioned below, Veronica sings her winning song “Hallelujah” at the Costa Cruises talent competition (April 2013). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIFgJxXB3oo For more information please email masha@mashamalka.com.

By S & L Promotions

The Over 50s Show, the popular, admission-free lifestyle event for the Coast’s older people, is returning to Estepona in November. Said organiser John Low: ‘The show has been brilliantly supported by businesses and bodies right across the Coast, as well as huge numbers of ex-pats and indigenous residents, since 2006. ‘With the clear signs of economic recovery in the past nine months, numerous companies have asked us to mount the show again this November. The response has been both gratifying and astonishing, and at this early stage almost half of the stands have been booked!’ Low said that, as in the past, visitors could expect ‘an entertaining, educational and informative experience’, and ‘we won’t change a winning formula’ All the free attractions which have contributed to the success of The Over 50s Show, and made it one of the ‘must attend’ events in the Coast’s events calendar, will again be in the mix, including cooking demonstrations, wine tasting, computer and Internet tuition, dancing demonstrations and lessons, pottery demonstrations, fashions and make-overs, golf lessons from PGA professionals, indoor bowls tuition, pets advice, consumer and legal advice, finance advice, guidance on cosmetic procedures and health checks and more. This has proved to be one of the most successful features of the show. Commented Eric: ‘I appear at many events around Britain and abroad, but The Over 50s Show in Estepona is certainly one of the busiest I have ever attended and over the years it has produced some great finds, including a very valuable nineteenth century painting’. The Over 50s Show is described by the organisers as ‘the ultimate lifestyle event for the Coast seniors’. They also add that the event offers the over-50s ‘a one-stop shop’ to get information on their physical and financial health as well as enjoy many of their interests and hobbies, not to mention an excellent opportunity to meet up with their peers from all

KEY FEATURE Making Scents

By Sue Cross

Later Heather served a delicious main course of chicken in a creamy mushroom sauce. It was cooked to perfection, as was the strawberry pavlova that followed. “What do you do for a living?” Kristin asked Piers as she savoured the last of the meringue that was crispy on the outside and slightly chewy inside. “I’m a cosmetic chemist,” he replied with a nonchalant air. Kristin gulped. She had the feeling that another door was about to open and glanced over at Harry who had not heard, as he was in a deep conversation with Heather. Pouring herself a glass of water, Kristin let this piece of news sink in. “Who do you work for?” she asked Piers. “Actually, I’m freelance but I’ve worked for lots of major companies.” He rattled off a few names. “Really? That’s very interesting. Did you know that I have a beauty salon in the town? It’s called The Works.” “No, I didn’t. What products do you use?” Kristin told him, all the while trying to keep her cool. “I wonder. Do you have time to formulate a small range for me?” she enquired, believing the proverb about the early bird. “I don’t see why not. Are you free on Monday? Why don’t I call round so that we can discuss things further?” His red bushy eyebrows shot up as he pulled a pipe from his jacket pocket. “Mind if I smoke this, Heather?” “That’s fine. Let’s go into the sitting room. Now, who wants coffee?” Everyone ambled into the sitting room, where Kristin ended up on the sofa next to Jonathan who tried flirting with her, to no avail. She was too preoccupied to notice. Kristin could hardly contain her excitement and couldn’t wait to tell Harry her news. Several months previously, she had made a list of the products that she wanted, together with the essential oils that each item would contain, and she was excited about telling Piers about them. “Thank you for a lovely evening.” Kristin kissed Heather on the cheek and avoided Jonathan’s lunge at her. In the background, a clock struck eleven, but the other guests did not show any sign of leaving. “Yes, thanks. The food was great.” Harry smiled at their hostess.

“Glad you enjoyed it.” Heather looked flushed after all the hard work and a few glasses of wine. On their way home, Kristin told Harry her news. “He’s coming round on Monday evening so that we can discuss things further.” “Well, it looks like a fait accompli already.” Harry did not sound overjoyed but added, “You know I’ll support you in this if it makes you happy. But, take it slowly. Okay?” “Of course. I’ll weigh it all up very carefully before making any decisions. And I won’t commit to anything without taking your advice.” Harry sighed. Monday flew by as Kristin had a full day of appointments. She longed to tell someone about meeting Piers and her business proposal, but held back. At six o’clock, she climbed the stairs. There was no smell of cooking because they had decided to make things easy and have a salad. Nina and Ricki were given strict instructions not to interrupt the important business meeting. “Get rid of these toys and books.” She found herself snapping at the children. “Sorry, look this is an important meeting and I want the sitting room to look tidy, that’s all.” She hoped that she had not imagined a look of resentment masking Nina’s face. Kristin hurried upstairs, deciding there was no time to take a shower. She changed into a pale grey suit, slipped on a pair of black high-heeled shoes, brushed her hair and applied a fresh coat of pink lipstick, together with a generous dab of Je Reviens perfume. Glancing in the mirror, she wondered if she looked the part, as she tried to imagine herself at a trade show promoting the new range of skincare with ease. She worried whether Harry would feel the same, as she knew that selling products would be as alien to him as taking a parachute jump from a great height. The shrill scream of the doorbell made her jump. “Harry, can you answer the door, please?” she called downstairs. MAKING SCENTS by Sue Cross is available as a paperback or ebook on Amazon. KEY SPORTS Alan Ball – Playing Extra Time Alan Ball was rejected by clubs early on in his career because he was too small. At Blackpool he used to clean Stanley Matthew’s boots and was never tipped by him at Christmas. Apparently Matthews was one of the tightest men you would ever meet, although Ball describes him as a ‘wonderful man’. Ball made his debut at Anfield in the 62-63 season in front of 57,000 people and on winning his first England cap in 1965: ‘Lottery, football pools, winning horse races… nothing could ever compare with winning their first blue velvet cap with three lions and the braiding and the golden tassle that went with pulling on the white shirt. Early on in his international career he received tips and advice from George Eastham. England were booed off the field after a 1-0 win over West Germany in February 1966. Alan Ball only played one of the group games in the ’66 World Cup Finals, the dull opening 0-0 draw with Uruguay but was back for the quarter final, the 1-0 win over Argentina. In the final, his shadowing of German Karl Heinz Schnellinger, and his running and enterprise is of legend. ‘Attack, attack every time you attack,’ ordered Sir Alf Ramsey. In the 1970 World Cup first round clash with Brazil; ‘there should have been a free kick awarded against Tostao just prior to Brazil’s goal’ opines Ball (he was devilishly close to an equaliser hitting the bar in the final few minutes).

36

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

By Steve Billingham

‘We subsequently took our feet off the pedals,’ was how the quarter final defeat to West Germany was described. After bowing out as a player with Bristol Rovers in 1983 (he had won 72 England caps between 1965 and 1975), Alan Ball tried his hand in management. He made a few shrewd deals and Portsmouth were promoted to Division 1 for the 87/88 season. Barry Horne in for 60 grand and out for 3.4 million was one of the cannier Alan Ball deals. A couple of quotes from the man: ‘Sometimes you should be sparing with your predictions,’ and ‘I’m not a believer in luck…..but I do believe you need it. The chapter about managing Southampton is interesting, the goals of Matt Le Tissier keeping them up and the antics and alleged match fixing of Bruce Grobelaar. At Manchester City, Ball was relegated on goal difference. After hearing about a Southampton goal conceded in the final match, which meant that a draw would be enough to keep Man City up, Ball issued Steve Lomas with instructions to keep hold of the ball at the corner flag to waste time. But the Southampton goal was disallowed and Manchester City’s match with Liverpool finished 2-2. Alan Ball’s wife Lesley died of cancer aged 57 in 2004. Alan died of a heart attack aged 61 while attempting to put out a bonfire in 2007.

COMPUTERS Fibre!!! Or??? As you will no doubt have noticed, with the different Internet solutions available up until now, practically all suffer from heavy congestion in what we could call “Eastenders time”! Due to the intense use of the Internet that the many installs of IPTV boxes have caused, it is virtually impossible to view anything on any IPTV box in the evenings. Movistar of course claims it is a temporary technical issue, but is it not surprising that this occurs at exactly the same time every evening and becomes worse when events of common interest are shown on the screen? The large majority of wireless Internet companies have suffered with the same. To add to the grief, many of the wireless companies have chosen not to upgrade their system in accordance with the rise of clients as they feel it will be money wasted, due to the immediate arrival of…YES - the fibre connection!!! Finally, it seems to have happened! As I write this article, I am looking at a bunch of hard working installers trying to shove fibre cables through the respective tubes underground outside my office and as such I look forward to receive 100 Mb down and maybe 10 Mb up. Hopefully… I can only speak from my knowledge with the installs in Calahonda, but I think it is fair to assume that the same should apply to Riviera and Miraflores, where I know similar works are being undertaken. A company from the Valencia region has struck a deal with the Calahonda local board, agreeing that this company will roll out a fibre structure in a period of nine months, starting in December last year. Calahonda would put its tubes and manholes at the disposition of the company, and if the conduits were not adequate, this company would put in its own and furthermore another tube, which would be the property of Calahonda for other uses, only not telecommunications. Should it be impossible for the company to cable due to broken infrastructure, the company could opt to substitute these areas with WiMAX wireless. Overall, very promising.

By Hans Jeppe Nielsen, Manager -Wise A few doubts, though. What will happen if the company does not comply within the stipulated timeframe? Will the company get an extension, and if yes, then how long and does this extension need the approval of the community again with the corresponding delay due to the calling of yet another AGM? Is it FTTH? This means FibreToTheHome or in other words, will the fibre reach all the way in to the router in the client’s home? Will the buildings have to commit to a certain amount of clients and over time? What happens in the case of a single user interested in a block of flats? Does the company have an obligation to install to any client interested, should the community undertake part of the install or is it completely up to the provider to decide? Internet traffic has to come from somewhere. It is no use having an enormous local tube for data transfer if you do not put it to use, which you can only do if you in turn buy the traffic from another provider. Is this assured in the contract? An added clause in the contract states that if “fibre cannot be installed it can be replaced by WiMAX”. Who decides when it is possible or not? Every time you replace with WiMAX, you automatically downgrade speed and quality. Other alternatives In Spain, it is obligatory to re-rent lines out to whoever would like to use them at an already pre-established rate. However, the initial installer of a network is probably not too eager to sublet to other companies, which might add value to the line, say for instance IPTV channels, and thus compete. Only other possible way seems to be to roll out another network, equal to the initial provider. This is not going to be easy either, as the use of the alternative tube in case of repair is restrained to nonit- and telco-uses, which then obliges any other provider to redo a new tube, should they want to compete. You will find my ad on this page. Yours sincerely Hans J. Nielsen Manager, WISE, S.L.

KEY FEATURE Changes to Birth and Death Registrations Overseas

British nationals living in Spain should note that from Monday 9th June, the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) is changing the way that it registers the births and deaths of British citizens overseas. The process will gradually be withdrawn from British Consulates in Spain during the rest of 2014. Thereafter this option for British expatriates will be carried out by a central registration unit in the UK. Consular birth registration is an optional service and is only available to those born overseas who have an automatic entitlement to British Nationality at birth. There is no legal requirement for a consular birth registration, and a local birth certificate with a certified translation if necessary should be sufficient for all purposes in the UK including applying for a passport.

46

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

By The British Embassy, Madrid Similarly there is no requirement for a consular death certificate – a local certificate should be sufficient for winding up the affairs and obtaining probate in the UK. The processing time for registrations will remain the same but applicants will need to allow extra time for documents to be sent to and from the UK. British nationals can find information on www.gov.co.uk on how to apply for a consular birth or death registration. Centralisation of birth and death registration into a singlepurpose unit in the UK will allow the FCO to provide a common online application procedure with a credit card payment facility, which will be more efficient and convenient for customers. Centralisation will also enable FCO consular staff to better focus on their primary function of assisting British nationals in distress.

Here are the best video games to improve your brain. KEY FINANCE Good News from the Eurozone Recently we had some good news coming from various areas across the Eurozone; Ireland led the way with activity in the services sector surging ahead and has now grown for the last 21 months and grew at its fastest rate since 2007. Spain followed Ireland’s lead where the service sector posted their best month since March 2007 and Spanish firms also reported that they took on more staff making some small impact upon the number of unemployed in Spain. Germany as expected also weighed in with another strong month and thankfully Italy also joined the party with some improved figures. Holland and France were the ailing parties that took the shine off these figures although the composite PMI came in at 54.0 up from 53.1 in March. The European Central Bank kept rates on hold and gave a clear hint that some form of support could be around the corner and investors liked what Mr Draghi had to say and yields on most European 10-year stock dipped, particularly in Ireland who saw the rate drop to 2.64%, a remarkable turnaround when just 3 years ago Ireland was paying around 14%. It is the euro however at the moment that is the weaker currency at the present time. In the UK, the Bank of England also kept rates at the current level of .5% for the 62nd consecutive month and there is no change in the quantitative programmes, which in the past pumped £375bn into the economy. With manufacturing posting a growth of 1.4% in the

first quarter of 2014, which incidentally was the best for nearly 15 years, add to this that retail sales rose by 4.4% year on year with home improvement items topping the list, then hopes of a balanced recovery are well advanced. Whilst the Halifax reported that during April house prices dipped by .2%, the Confederation of British Industry is still warning against the housing bubble as it appears London prices have increased by around 25% since 2008, (nice if you are in London). There have been calls for the Bank of England to consider slowing the housing growth, however I suggest with the new mortgage lending rules recently introduced we may see a natural slow down in mortgage approvals for May. Yes, that balanced recovery is on, however the CBI say the UK still needs to improve the balance of imports and exports. Rates during the period 16 April to 16 May 2014

KEY FEATURE Facebook for Business There isn’t anything worse than checking a website and clicking their Facebook link to find that they’ve redirected you to a personal profile. Not only do you have to hope they accept you as a “friend,” you’re taken through one more step to see their content and find their real Fan Page (if they have one at all). I hate this! Apart from the fact that it is ‘The Rules’ of Facebook and you risk losing your profile if it masquerades as a business, here are the top 5 reasons to have a Fan Page, and not a personal profile, attached to your business. 1. Profiles Look Like You Don’t Know What’s Going On Plain and simple. A brand that directs to a personal page just looks amateur. You only get one first impression. You don’t want it to be this one. 2. Search Engine results Facebook Fan Pages are indexed, which means that some of the public content is indexed as well. As a business, you want to show up on the search engines. Of course, you want to direct traffic to your website first, but having a social presence is very important. 3. Check-Ins & Location Services You can allow people to check into your brand through your

By Fiona Catchpowle Facebook Fan Page. You can’t do anything like this on your personal profile. If you have a location for your business, this is crucial for social proofing and newsfeed marketing. You always want to get people to interact with your brand. They can do so by ‘checking in’. 4. Newsfeed Marketing Newsfeed marketing is the basis of social media marketing. By having a regularly updated Fan Page, you’ll be seen and noticed on the newsfeeds of your fans. When they interact with your posts and brand, you’ll show up on their friends’ newsfeeds. This is your key to gaining new fans. 5. Comment As Your Business This is great branding. As long as you ‘Like’ pages officially as your Fan Page, you can comment on their content and posts as well. In doing so, you’re increasing exposure for your brand and providing valuable (read: priceless) insight and conversations with a new audience. For more information and news about social media for businesses, visit fionacatchpowle.com. Editor’s note: I have attended one of Fiona’s courses which I found very informative and inspiring.

KEY LAW Toxic Property Loans, the “Bad Bank” and Anti-Money Laundering Laws The continuing financial crisis in Spain was created by the lending practices, weaknesses and failures of savings banks (the Cajas). SAREB has been designed to be a “bad bank” – providing government bonds in exchange for toxic property loans held by Spanish banks, with the intent of improving the banks’ balance sheets, allowing them to return to giving loans. SAREB was created in 2012 under a condition set by the European Union in exchange for aid of up to 100 billion Euros to the Spanish banking sector. SAREB’s stated mission: Divest the assets, pay the debt issued and be wound-up in a period of 15 years. SAREB is tasked with selling these properties – hotels, offices as well as homes. They are using specialist Agencies and Estate Agents as well as the local banks that first handed over these properties to SAREB. They are currently inviting real estate professionals to market their properties.

Exciting opportunities for Estate Agents? It certainly should be. However, be warned! Property purchases are subject to the Government procedures against Money Laundering (AML law). Estate Agents wanting a ‘slice of the action’ with SAREB have suddenly found themselves and their books being inspected for their compliance with the AML law. The governmental inspecting entity is SEPBLAC. Failure to comply with the AML procedures can result in extremely heavy fines, including jail sentences and business closure. The necessary training in the Anti-Money Laundering procedures for Estate Agent staff is supplied by Iberdata21 S.L., a government-authorised training company. KEY FINANCE Funeral Insurance In the UK Funeral Insurance policies are very uncommon as normally pre-paid Funeral Plans or Life Insurance is offered instead. However, here in Spain almost half of the 47 million population has a Funeral Insurance policy in place for peace of mind, security and assistance when it is needed most. These are not pre-paid plans but an insurance policy that can be paid on a monthly basis, quarterly or half-yearly basis. Most importantly, Funeral Insurance provides the following services: Provision of the Funeral Service - The administration and provision of the contracted funeral service when the death of an insured person occurs. This would normally include: Coffin, Funeral Car, Vigil, Preparation, Shroud, Two natural floral crowns with bow and inscription, Centerpiece of Natural Flowers, Two Taxis for family, Civil or Religious Ceremony, Civil and Parish Registration, Processing and Organisation, Medical Certification, Taxes and Fees, Burial or Cremation Costs including Urn, Morgue, Marble or Granite Tombstone, Inscription and Installation Transfer-Free Choice of Cemetery - The cost of the preparation, burial and transfer of the deceased from the place of death to the cemetery designated by his family, freely selected in Spain. Repatriation - At the request of his relatives, the Insurer will take care of the administration and costs of repatriation from the place of death in Spain to the nearest international airport to the place of burial in the insured person’s country of origin. In the event of repatriation, a return ticket from the country of origin to Spain, or vice versa, for a companion is included

By Rightway Insurance Family Care - Includes a post-mortem service to the family, with the purpose of facilitating the necessary steps for the correct provision of the service contracted. Coverage includes all the necessary administration for the obtaining and processing of the official documents required after the insured person’s death. Legal Assistance - Helpline staffed by a lawyer, for the prevention of any litigation, regarding the rights of the insured person in his private life. Also includes any telephone consultation for legal matters related to the death of the insured person. Psychological Care - This coverage aims to prevent the complications derived from the death of an insured relative in the policy, to control the risk factors, to foresee the phases of bereavement, to offer practical help adapted to the deceased’s relatives. Worldwide Care - This insurance policy has worldwide coverage. The coverage of Basic World Wide Care includes the following: Transfer or repatriation for health reasons, Emergency medical expenses while abroad, Travel for a relative of the hospitalized policy holder, Accompanying relative in case of death, Extended stay in a hotel, Children’s travel, Premature return of the insured person to Spain in the event of the death of a relative, Delivery of medications, Long distance medical consultation, Information Service, Loan and/ or advance of legal costs/bail and sending of urgent messages This is never an easy subject to talk about, however, having a Funeral Insurance means that your loved ones have one less thing to worry about.

miss most from the UK? I bet it is a good curry at a reasonable price. Well here it is! Korma is situated in Riviera del Sol just as you come off the roundabout going in the direction of Miraflores (see map at the end of this magazine), Korma is now well established as a favourite amongst the locals. Very modern décor, absolutely spotless with an extensive terrace for al fresco dining, Some examples are Chicken Tikka, lovely big and tender pieces of chicken with a bit of a kick, Lamb Bhuna that melts in your mouth and the best ever Prawn Puri that we have had since coming to Spain over 17 years ago! Other recommendations I will give in the write up for the new sister restaurant in El Rosario below. Portions are always generous and best quality ingredients are used. You will certainly feel full when you leave and also pleasantly surprised at what good value for money the food is. Kids’ menu available. KEY FEATURE Pink Floyd Tribute Concert in Mijas Pink Floyd, an iconic band who formed 50 years ago this year, influenced musicians the world over, including Andy Claridge, a long-time resident on the Costa del Sol. In 1990, after touring with ‘Squeeze’and working on studio recordings with Phil Collins, Andy had a dream of producing his own Pink Floyd show as a tribute to this great band. The production has grown over the years and in 2008, when Andy teamed up with Steve Nelson, (another highly respected musician living on the Costa del Sol), the show was expanded both musically and visually. Andy and Steve played selected venues during the following 6 years, each performance attracting more ‘Floyd’ fans as word spread. The production grew to include a drummer and female vocalist (The Great Gig in the Sky), original videos projected on the ‘Floyd-style’ circular screen, the famous “Division Bell” Faces, the ‘Hammers’ and of course - laser lighting.

By Big M Promotions

Word spread far and wide and earlier this year Andy was approached by a promoter who offered the show a 16-concert tour of Northern Europe in August 2014, starting at the famous “Tivoli Gardens” in Copenhagen, Denmark. Andy and Steve have yet again augmented the production for this tour, with more Pink Floyd songs and even more spectacular lighting effects. They will be performing this new “European Tour” show at a special open-air concert in the Mijas auditorium on Friday 27th June 2014. This unique venue, at the top of the Mijas Pueblo (next to the Plaza de Toros), will provide an atmospheric setting for this special concert, and anyone wanting to experience the magic of Pink Floyd’s music, performed by talented musicians with dazzling visual effects should not miss this. Details of the concert and ticket bookings can be found on www.costadeldisco.com or by calling the promoter, BigM Promotions, on 952 661 819.
