KEY FEATURE Action August

By Ali Meehan

If you regularly read the Key to the Mijas Costa magazine, you will know about the Costa Women ‘Action August’ projects where we schedule a project for the month to make it happen. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean taking on more things! Social media is a good example of how you can get better results by working smarter with the tools and platforms you use, this article talks about ‘how’. It’s easy to get distracted on social media. Once you start that scroll on Facebook, it would be easy to re-emerge again in September! This has led many of my friends to take a social media detox. Whilst I get the idea and in principle it sounds good to take a break, it’s not always that practical for your business, especially if you fail to respond to an important message from a potential Client. It’s more about reminding ourselves why we are doing what we are doing and why we are using the platforms we are using. Firstly, what is the demographic for your business? Are your Clients on ALL the social media platforms you are using? Once we know who our Clients are and where they hang out, it so much easier to tailor content to the specific needs, behaviours, and concerns of different groups of your customers.

8

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

Then, ask yourself some searching questions:• where have you got most business in the last 6 months to a year? • how much business are you getting from the platforms you are using? • could it be you would get more from a different platform, a different type of post, a different way to sharing? Perhaps your Action August challenge could be about reinventing your marketing and taking a fresh look at how and why people buy from your business and what are the biggest objections when they don’t. There are many businesses offering the same or similar products and services whichever market you are in. What makes yours unique and great to do business with? When was the last time you asked your Clients exactly that question? However you spend your August, I hope you enjoy it and achieve whatever and wherever you put your “action”. Let me know how you get on. Ali Meehan is founder of https://costawomen.com – the largest free community for Women in Spain which will, over the summer, welcome its 6000th member!

KEY HEALTH Whitening: 3 Things to Know

About Getting a Brighter Smile

By Dr Belinda Pamos

Why Did My Teeth Change Colour? Over time, your teeth can go from white to not-so-bright for a number of reasons:

What Are My Whitening Options? Talk to your dentist before starting. If you are a candidate, there are three ways to put the shine back in your smile:

Food and Drink Tobacco Use Trauma Medications Or maybe your natural colour is a bit too yellow!

In-Office Bleaching This procedure is called chair-side bleaching and usually requires only one office visit. The dentist will apply either a protective gel to your gums or a rubber shield to protect your gums. Bleach is then applied to the teeth. A special light or laser might be used to enhance the action of the whitening agent.

How Does Teeth Whitening Work? Tooth whitening is a simple process. Whitening products contain one of two tooth bleaches (hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide). These bleaches break stains into smaller pieces, which makes the colour less concentrated and your teeth brighter.

At-Home Bleaching Peroxide-containing whiteners actually bleach the tooth enamel. They typically come in a gel and are placed in a tray that fits on your teeth. You may also use a whitening strip that sticks to your teeth. The concentration of the bleaching agent is lower than what your dentist would use in the office.

KEY HEALTH What is Lipoedema?

By Patricia Kaines

For those of you who follow me on Facebook (Patricia Kaines Therapies), you will have noticed that I posted on my page a few times during the month of June – Lipoedema Awareness Month. Lipoedema is a mis-understood and very often mis-diagnosed disease affecting approximately 11% of the female population. It is occasionally also found in men, especially if there is a history of it in the female side of the family. Unfortunately, lipoedema is most often diagnosed as obesity. Lipoedema was first recognised in 1940. But it is only recently that interest and education about lipoedema is gaining awareness thanks to groups like: Lipoedema UK, Lipedema Project USA and the Lipoedema Australia Support Society. Here in Spain, I have recently discovered a group called Adalipe, based in Madrid who is trying to bring awareness to the Spanish population. Lipoedema is the abnormal build-up of fat cells. Symptoms include disproportionately large legs down to the ankles, hips, buttocks and sometimes the stomach. The

12

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

legs can also be very sensitive and prone to bruising. The arms can also be affected. Lipoedema is always bilateral and symmetrical. In all cases the hands and feet are normal sized. As the disease progresses, the patients become increasingly heavy especially in the lower body. The growing fat cells can then start to interfere with the pathways of the lymphatic vessels. This can potentially lead to the development of lymphoedema and is then known as lipo-lymphoedema. My interest and awareness of lipoedema grew out of my passion for the Lymphatic System. During my training in Manual Lymphatic Drainage we learned about lipoedema, but until 4 years ago I had not treated anyone with this illness. I have since treated a few clients who have come to me via word of mouth, mainly because their doctors have not recognised the symptoms and told them to ‘go on a diet’! If you would like further information, a consultation or an appointment please call me at Clinica Medicare in La Cala de Mijas on 952 835 776 or directly on 666 170 868.

KEY HEALTH A New Way to Protect Bones & Circulation Vitamin K has an important role to play when delivered in a form which the body can use Despite our best intentions, even a balanced diet doesn’t always give us everything we need. There are some nutrients we just don’t get enough of, especially vitamin K2 which is an uncommon nutrient in western diets. Vitamin K2 supplements are growing in demand mainly because of the nutrient’s incredibly protective benefits to bone health and circulation. The main dietary K2 source is natto, a traditional Japanese dish of fermented soy beans rarely eaten outside of Japan (and even in Japan, is considered an acquired taste). Low vitamin K levels can also result from poor diet, alcoholism, malabsorption disorders, ageing, and certain medicines. Interestingly, statin medications (a common prescription for cholesterol control) have been shown in studies to deplete K2 levels in the body. Circulatory Health K2 activates matrix GLA-protein (MGP) which found is in our blood vessel walls. Activated MGP binds calcium and helps ensure it is not deposited into blood vessel walls, which would result in artery calcification and elevated risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). K2 is especially important for anyone taking calcium supplements as a result. A 2004 population study with 4807 subjects showed that individuals with adequate vitamin K intakes experienced reduction in: • CVD and Death from CVD • Severe calcification of the blood vessels • All cause mortality The lead researcher discussed that this effect may be due to reduction in arterial calcification, and suggests that elevated intakes of vitamin K2 may contribute to heart disease prevention. Bone Health From age 30-35 onwards, we begin to lose bone mass which can eventually lead to brittle and fracture-prone bones. Known as osteoporosis, this is thought to affect 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men globally and is especially common in post-menopausal women. Vitamin K2 assists by activating osteocalcin, a protein found in our bone building osteoblast cells that enable calcium to be incorporated into the bones. K2 also slows the activity of osteoclasts, cells which naturally break down bone as part of calcium balance. The vitamin with many forms K2 is available in many forms with menaquinone-7 (MK7) being the most popular in supplements, demonstrating more favourable characteristics in trials. MK-7 is biologically active in the body for longer than other forms of vi-

Provided By Pharmanord

tamin K (including K1 and K2 MK4). The result is stronger circulatory and bone protective benefits as well as being easier to absorb. K2 MK-7 supplements produced via a patented organic process demonstrate 100% biological activity in the body (known as trans isomer form), while more common fermented ‘natto’ products are 50% biologically active (a combination of trans and cis forms). Te organic process produces K2 MK-7 which is free of common allergens, great news for those adverse to soy present in the fermented varieties. As a fat soluble vitamin, K2 is best absorbed from the gut in the presence of fats, most dependably in an oil capsule form. K2- the next step in preventative nutrition More of us are taking advantage of K2 and its bone and circulatory benefits, especially if we’re concerned about bone density and circulatory disease. Difficult to derive from food, careful consideration should be made when opting for which vitamin K2 to choose to get the best out of the supplement. The research is clear; Vitamin K form matters!

KEY HEALTH Why is “PSA” Testing so Important in Men’s Health

By Medicare

Men are often renowned for taking risks, generally you get a kick out of living life in the fast lane and acting as if you are invincible and sadly this is mission impossible. Looking at recent trends, the incidents of prostate and testicular cancers are increasing sharply. With a few simple changes to your lifestyle, you could dramatically improve your well being, your functioning and durability as well as your stamina and performance. Prostate Cancer Prostate cancer is a common cancer in older men. Every year 22,000 men are diagnosed in the UK alone. Around 8 in 10 cases occur in men over the age of 65. It is rare in men under 50. Unlike many other cancers, prostate cancer is often present for many years without you realising it. This is because in many cases the cancer is slow growing and can take many years to cause any symptoms. By the age of 80, more than half of all men will have some cancer cells in their prostate but only 1 in 30 of them will actually die from it. However some prostate cancer can be fast growing and spread to other areas of the body. What is a PSA Test? It is a blood test that measures the level of PSA in your blood. PSA stands for Prostate Specific Antigen. PSA is a protein made by the

prostate which naturally leaks into the blood stream. The PSA level is often raised well before any other symptoms of prostate cancer develop. So the test is a useful tool for early diagnosis when used in conjunction with your medical & family history, changes or symptoms that you may be experiencing and a urine analysis. This enables your healthcare professional to obtain a complete picture and take the appropriate action when necessary. The Benefits of Having a Test: • It may provide reassurance if the test result is normal • It raises awareness and breaks down barriers so men access healthcare more routinely • It can help detect prostate cancer before any symptoms develop • Treatment in the early stages of prostate cancer could help you live longer and avoid the complications of cancer. A simple blood test carried out annually as part of a prostate consultation or as part of a more comprehensive yearly health MOT, could make all the difference to your future health. At Clinica Medicare all of our tests are carried out by our Nurse Practitioner who has many years’ experience in Men’s Health. Please contact the Clinic if you have any further queries or to book an appointment on 952 83 57 76.

KEY HOLISTIC Beauty which comes from within – Sound is Wellness for our Soul! Cosmetics and Sound It is scientifically proven that sounds may have a positive impact on our wellbeing. Probably we all have experienced that. Depending on which sounds we listen to, different effects may be caused. The sound vibrations Christine works with have a very particular effect and holistic benefit to a person. She works with singing bowls and gongs for managing and preventing stress, releasing pains and blockages from the body in a simple and easy way. It is not surprising that these bronze bowls often produced in Nepal or India have found their niche in many beauty, wellness and spa facilities. Deep relaxation and wellbeing offered by sound vibrations from singing bowls are an awesome compensation to stress and the hustle and bustle of everyday life and are very gladly accepted. For, as we all know, true beauty comes from within! For example, during a beauty treatment one may experience deep relaxation through the sounds, which enhances the effect of traditional treatments. Sound and cosmetics combined as a holistic offer is much more than external beauty. It is about rediscovering balance, relaxation and joy of life. In addition to the audible, harmonious sounds of a singing bowl, its vibrations can be used to complement cosmetic treatments. Some

By Christine Heckel

beauticians for example “energise” the water for a facial treatment in advance in a singing bowl. Small singing bowls are used in the facial area to relax the muscles before a treatment - the relaxing effect is often visible immediately, this may have an anti-aging effect. In this way, not only the effects of the beauty products can be enhanced, but the fine vibrations also promote better lymphatic removal. Many clients describe the use of singing bowls during a beauty treatment as the highlight when they can enjoy the harmonious sounds. It is very popular to relax the belly area using a deep sounding pelvic singing bowl: placed slightly below the stomach area, the Solar Plexus, and sounded gently. This area, which is traversed by the largest nervenetwork of the vegetative nervous system, reacts very sensitively to stress and tension. For this reason, the softly spreading sound vibrations are often felt to be particularly beneficial. The sound vibrations continue in the body and loosen tissue. This kind of massage has a deep effect in the body, down to cellular level. Regeneration on all levels may happen. Contact Christine for more information by calling +34 667 438 829 or send a message to ch@christine-heckel.com. Christine Heckel is the only representative and trainer of the Peter Hess Academy Spain and the only reseller of Peter Hess® quality singing bowls in Spain.

KEY ASTROLOGY Sun Signs, Cusps and Eclipses The idea that a person was born on the “cusp” originates from Sun Sign astrology. Your birth sign as you know it is actually the sign that the Sun was in at the time you were born and if you look up the ‘sun-sign horoscope’ page of a magazine or newspaper it refers to a range of dates for your birth sign. However, this isn’t particularly accurate or helpful because the Sun doesn’t move from one sign into another on the same date each year and those publications have no way to calculate the exact position of the Sun in a personal birth chart. If you were born on the cusp (meaning at the end of one sign/ beginning of the next), unsure and want to know your true sun sign then you can either write to me with your birth details i.e. date, place and time of birth (the birth time is important especially if a person is born on the cusp) and I’ll forward the information or you can go to the astro.com website… click on this url: http://www. astro.com/cgi/genchart.cgi ... It will take you directly to the page where you can enter your birth details and print your personal birth chart free of charge. Aries From 21 March to 20 April Taurus From 21 April to 20 May Gemini From 21 May to 21 June Cancer From 22 June to 22 July Leo From 23 July to 23 August Virgo From 24 August to 22 September Libra From 23 September to 22 October Scorpio From 23 October to 22 November Sagittarius From 23 November to 21 December Capricorn From 22 December to 20 January Aquarius From 21 January to 19 February Pisces From 20 February to 20 March

There are 10 planets in everyone’s birth chart but the Sun sign is the biggest single piece because it represents KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

One reason there is so much skepticism about astrology is because people equate it with Sun sign or horoscope predictions that appear in newspapers and magazines and get the idea that astrology means everyone born under the sign of Aries for example is the same. Sun sign astrology is fun and entertaining but can’t be relied on or mistaken for the real thing! It misses the richness and beauty of astrology which is a shame because apart from being one of the most ancient of disciplines, it really is the most useful, practical tool we have to discover what makes us tick and realise our individual potential in this lifetime. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Moving on … what’s in store for August? Well, wouldn’t you know it’s time for another Mercury Retrograde, from the 13th August to 5th September, this time in the sign of Virgo! Oh my, those little details! By all means sign whatever needs to be signed during these 3+ weeks but don’t forget to read the small print before putting pen to paper.

In the above diagram Aries begins on 21st March, but in 2017 the Sun entered Aries on the 20th March. In the same diagram Cancer begins on the 22nd June but this year it entered Cancer on the 21st June! Is this important? Yes most definitely for those born on the cusp, as there is a big difference between the traits of each sign.

18

a personal quest or mission this lifetime and its position in the last degree shows it is completing the mission for that sign. This is not true for those born with their Sun at the beginning of a sign; once the Sun has moved into the next sign there is no more bleeding through. The rest of the chart (remaining 9 planets Ascendant, MC etc) then adds a richly layered tapestry of other influences to complete the picture.

While Mercury is retrograde here we need to double check contracts, legal documents or anything that needs a signature, also make sure travel plans/details are updated… in fact anything related to communication could go AWOL if it’s rushed through; take time to check and reflect. These days life is full on and there are times when we need to slow down and enjoy the ride… even if it goes at a snail’s pace we’ll eventually arrive at our destination. It’s worth mentioning here that during Mercury’s backward sojourn in the sky, we will have a Solar Eclipse on the 21st August… another reason to think twice or hesitate before signing papers or making big decisions. Solar Eclipses were, and some still believe are, associ-

By Janet Powell ated with ‘cover-ups’ because in imagery the sun is blotted out, darkness descends and deceptions (including selfdeception) can take place! That’s an interesting concept… well-known astrologer and author Jessica Adams says “An eclipse in astrology is simple to understand, it obscures what would normally be seen. Situations are in shadow, details may be hidden. For this reason, astrologers warn readers and clients to avoid the eclipse period (one day before and one day later) for decision making or action plans. An eclipse is neither positive nor negative; it’s just missing information; concealed facts, blind spots. It’s sometimes the case people aren’t revealing things or there may be a ‘to be continued…’ element to what goes down. An eclipse event could happen almost as soon as the Moon moves into the sign where there will be an eclipse…” in this instance the Moon moves into Leo around 8pm on the 19th August. There are two Eclipses this month … on the 7th August there is a Lunar Eclipse in Aquarius but the ‘biggie’ is without doubt the Solar Eclipse on 21st August in the late degrees of Leo, sign of Royalty or if no monarchy exists then the President or representative of a country! This Solar Eclipse is likely to have some surprising consequences although these might not be immediate as the effects are long term. While Europe will have a partial solar eclipse, the United States will experience a total solar eclipse… what is being termed ‘The 2nd Great American Eclipse’ that will follow a path from East to West! In other words many of the States in America will be shrouded in total darkness while the Moon crosses in front of the Sun… the last time a total solar eclipse took a similar path in the US was in 1918 – named the ‘1st Great American Eclipse’! I haven’t studied Trump’s birth chart but according to many astrologers he has quite a line-up of planets that will be affected one way or another by this eclipse and outcomes will depend on whether his re-actions/responses are positive or negative! Interesting too, that in Theresa May’s birth chart, Pluto (planet of transformation) is at the same degree in Leo on which the solar eclipse will fall! Will she survive? Time will tell and though changes over a period of time are almost certain to take place, possibly on a global level, they may not do so im-

mediately because of the long term effects of a S/Eclipse. Will we feel the effects of these eclipses personally? I’d say yes to a degree and for some stronger than others… although I suspect there will be those who put such effects down to other causes it’s worth remembering that whatever affects a country or nation will in all probability affect its occupants! On a personal level, birthdays that will feel the eclipse influences more strongly are 2nd to 6th February (Full Moon Eclipse 7th August) and 19th to 22nd August (New Moon Eclipse 21st August). Just to say Full Moons are centered on ‘letting go’; that could relate to anything in life from letting go of outworn patterns of behaviour to people and situations that are inhibiting ones progress in some way. New Moons depict new beginnings, a time to start that new project, new venture even a new life. Eclipses are far more potent than the monthly new and full moons and their’ influences can be felt over a longer period of time, up to 6 months for a Lunar Eclipse and 12 months for a Solar Eclipse. The ancients viewed Eclipses as bad omens, but the truth is they are neither good nor bad. Changes that follow can be outwardly dramatic or subtle and inward… either way there could be a profound unfolding that happens over a period of time. That said, if we are somehow moved or nudged to bring about certain changes in our lives then that’s probably what is needed, and whether or not we relish the idea of change it certainly makes for an interesting life! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ For those who are interested in delving a little deeper into astrology, I’ll be running an Astrology for Beginners workshop in January 2018 (date to be set) at the Mijas venue, with maximum 5 persons. KEY SPORTS Wimbledon 2017 & Darts Wimbledon 2017 (3 July -16 July) The Heather Watson match was another close run affair. I thought I could recognise her opponent’s coos, I remember them prominent in the tournament around 2011. Sure enough, it was Victoria Azarenka, a former World number 1 and Wimbledon semi-finalist in 2011 and 2012. It was an entertaining match and Watson sent down some excellent forearm smash and passing shots. But she lost her serve at 3-3 in the deciding set, having led earlier in the match, this game lasted more than 10 minutes. Although she broke serve back to level at 4-4, Azarenka ran out a 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 winner. A Watson challenge call in the final game was ignored because it came too late. She had come within 2 points of beating Serena Williams in the 2015 third round who had gone on to win the tournament. What could Heather Watson do on her day at Wimbledon? Top-ranked English women’s player was Joanna Konte who was ranked 7th. Old timers like 1977 Champion Virginia Wade were tipping her to go all the way. She ran to the semi-final where she was defeated by 37 year old Serena Williams. An excellent result came in round 2 of the men’s doubles, Jay Clarke and Marcus Willis knocked out the defending champions French pair Mahut and Herbert in 5 sets, Willis slamming down an ace for the win. Andy Murray had to come back from 2-5 down to complete a 3 sets to 1 victory over F Fognini in the 3rd round. Frenchman B Paire was ranked 46 and despite having one of the strongest backhands on tour, he was put away in 3 sets by Andy Murray who moved into the quarter finals. He won a tie-break by 7 points to 4 to win the set 7-6 and move 2 sets to 1 in front against the 24th ranked American Sam Querrey. But plagued by his hamstring he went down in the match by 2 sets to 3, losing the final 2 sets 6-1, 6-1. Rafael Nadal had been eliminated in the 16 by the number 16 from Luxembourg while Novak Djokavic retired with injury from his quarter.

By Steve Billingham 8 wins for Federer at 35 and perhaps his easiest yet With these and Murray gone the way was clear for 35 year old Roger Federer to win his 8th Wimbledon title (without dropping a set) defeating Thomas Berdych in the semi and then Croatian 7th seed Cilic in the final 6-3, 6-1, 6-4. Blame it on a blister Cilic crying with anguish at one point in the match sort of blamed it on a blister. Darts Round-Up Two events in Las Vegas, first up was the North American Classic which featured the top 8 American and Canadian players. The tournament was won by a policeman, Willard Brugier, and he will play at the PDC World Championships at the Alexandra Palace in December. Up and coming 21 year old Canadian, ‘Awesome’ Dawson Murschell, made the semi-finals before being eliminated by Brugier. The following evening came the US Masters, where the 8 top North American players took on 8 of the leading World players. Van Gerwen bashed Chris White once the ‘great hope of North American darts’ 6-0 in 11 minutes while Gary Anderson also won by the same score line in the same amount of time. However, there were a couple of highlights for the Americans. Dave Richardson defeated German Max Hoppe 6-3 while Murschell took out James Wade 6-5 on double top, although Wade missed 6 match darts. Northern Ireland’s Darryl Gurney defeated number 3 Peter Wright and number 2 Gary Anderson on his run to the final. Gurney went 3-2 up on Van Gerwen and had the throw but it was broken and Van Gerwen went on to win the match and tournament 8-6. The match was reasonably nip and tuck and Gurney, more or less, kept with him in scoring and might even on his night have the take of him.

KEY PETS That Summer Itch

By Joanna Fleur Oxley

Having worked with dogs all my life, this is by far the most common problem I see with dogs. The distress of seeing your dog being unable to rest, itching or chewing themselves raw is very upsetting and can lead to expensive vet bills BUT when vet treatment fails (as it often does with long-term itching), then we must look deeper into the root cause of the itching. Diet Diet and environmental issues are more often the cause, with toxic overload also being an issue. Diet is very important in the treatment of long-term itching. As a qualified dog dietician, I’m open to most areas of feeding - raw, dry, moist. However whichever route you choose, it’s important you understand the very basics of what a dog needs and what you should avoid. Dogs need animal fat protein, rather than cereal protein. Look for food where the first listed ingredient is a named meat i.e. salmon, turkey, chicken. Avoid meat and animal derivatives, which simply mean all the cheapest cuts of animal leftovers! Choose foods that are low or even grain/chemical free. Don’t be fooled by marketing labels. Hypoallergenic is freely used on many branded dog foods when in fact they are full of ingredients known to cause allergies. With other diets like raw feeding, do your research and ensure you understand how to keep it balanced. Dog Treats The dog treat market is huge with fancy packaging, advertising showing cute dogs enjoying these treats that help keep their teeth clean or breath smelling fresh. Don´t fall for this. Many of these treats are full of chemicals responsible for causing toxin overload in dogs leading to itching. Choose healthy treats like raw fruit or vegetables (go to my blog on safe fruit and vegetables, for example apples must have their pips removed). When buying dog treats, choose only brands that state they are 100%

28

natural and chemical free, low or free of grains. Chemical Overload Leave chemical flea products to high impact seasons, using natural prevention during other seasons. Research new vaccine protocol and be informed of top, leading research and holistic veterinarian advice concerning the issue of over vaccination and the health implications. Choose grooming products that are 100% natural. Shampoos should be designed to replace natural oils rather than strip them. Oiling of pads, skin and coat can help protect dogs that suffer with environmental allergies. Consider your use of chemical products in the home which could be causing skin reactions in dogs. Prevention is the key to good health care. Following my above tips will often prevent serious problems but should your dog still suffer with skin problems, my top tip when seeking vet help is to ask for a skin scraping early on to rule out mites, fungus, bacterial infections as the course of treatment will depend on the problem. By far the biggest defence against all causes of itching in dogs is my Colloidal liquid silver. Used regularly it helps keep a dog’s skin and coat healthy and free from fungus, bacteria, mites and naturally protects against all biting insects. It can also be used for all forms of itching and because it´s natural and can be used freely even in the eyes, ears and open wounds. It’s soothing, healing and deals with inflammation and can be used alongside all other treatments. Lastly, I offer all my clients treatment plans helping their itching dogs, which will look at every aspect of their dog´s health including diet, environmental issues with the view to treating the root, depending on each individual case. Don’t accept that your dog’s itching is normal. Their skin and coat speak volumes about their overall health and should be dealt with to ensure a happy and healthy life for both dog and owners.

KEY COMPUTERS Signs your Computer’s Hard Drive is about to Die

Losing data can be a real disaster, but thankfully hard drives often show warning signs before they die. If you observe any of these signs of impending failure, back up your drive immediately and prepare for the worst. It can happen with little or no warning, and if you haven’t recently performed a backup, your files, music and pictures could be lost. Sometimes there are clear warning signs of impending failure. If you know what those signs are, and keep any eye out for them, you can usually avoid data loss.

By Computer City City and we can install the enclosure for you. If you can’t access the data at all, you still have a few options. Computer City offers data recovery services, and we can sometimes rescue data from seemingly dead drives. We can replace your old drive for a new one, install the operating system and transfer your data on to the new drive quickly and efficiently so you can be up and running in no time at all. Please remember to make regular backups of your drive and look out for the signs!

The drives most prone to failure are the older, electro-mechanical devices that store data on a rapidly spinning disk. Modern solid state drives (SSDs) fail as well, but it happens less frequently. How to tell your hard drive is about to die: • Frequent and cryptic error messages while performing typical activities like moving files • Folder and file names that are scrambled and changed • Disappearing files and folders • Really long wait times to access folders and files • Hard disk is silent for a long period after you request data by opening a file or folder • Garbled output from open files or printing • Hard drive grinds away constantly because of noisy bearings • Frequent crashes, particularly when booting up Windows Sound can be an excellent indicator of disk trouble, if it seems much louder than usual or makes occasional clicks or grinding sounds, check it ASAP and backup your data and replace the drive. If the problem is severe, and you’re comfortable with electronics, you can remove the drive, buy an external enclosure, and then plug it into a working computer. This lets you pull data off the drive without having to boot it up. Some laptops are more difficult than others to work on, so it can be a good idea to visit a computer repair shop such as Computer

KEY FINANCE The Lemming Theory! “Why is it common practice that when someone sees someone else making a bad decision, it is perceived as acceptable to follow suit?” Does the “Power of Advertising” always need to win, blinding people into making what could possibly be the wrong choice for them, why do we feel almost obliged to join in with something that could ultimately offer us less instead of more or make us worse off rather than better off!! Could we at Right Way Insurance help you to take a fresh look at how you make future decisions when it comes to your Insurance needs? Let’s see.. Did you know that more people choose Direct Line than nearly any other insurance company? Why? Well, they are bold in their marketing, slick even, with a loud beeping car horn on a glossy red telephone that propels its shininess right at us, grabbing our attention and making it TOO difficult to ignore. It obviously works!! We learn to trust the power of the Media, that it must be the best deal available because they all tell us so and their advertising budgets allow them to flash their feathers. But should we believe every BEEP we hear or should we SWERVE our attentions for one moment to the fact that there actually could be an alternative and one that would offer us BETTER rewards for our custom? Did you know compared to our closest competitors, we offer

By Rightway Insurance & Finance more cover for you on our Car Insurance Policies. We are talking serious reasons to consider why the “Lemming Theory” may not be the best motivation for choosing who you go with for your Insurance Cover. For example here are just some of the things we offer that NONE of our main competitors do! • Protection of the No Claims Discount (The first fault accident on the policy will not affect the premium at the renewal) • 30% added to the Book Value * of the Vehicle on settlement of Write-off on Comprehensive, Total Loss, Fire & Theft Covers (*vehicles over 4 years old) • No Excess deducted on a Total Loss/Write-off. • No Excess deducted on a Fire or Theft. • Courtesy Car Service provided on ALL levels of cover - Due to Fire & Theft: up to 45 days. Due to Motor Accident: up to 35 days and EVEN due to a Breakdown: up to 35 days from the seventh day. • Freephone 24 hour Roadside/Travel Assistance Why not Contact Us? 17 years in the business here in Spain, a clean reputation with wonderful endorsements from happy customers. KEY LAW European Data Protection Regulation GDPR Companies’ GDPR Readiness not at the Level where it should be A survey, conducted by Privacy Laws & Business, reveals that less than a half of the respondents have created a breach notification procedure even though breach notification to regulators will be mandatory from next May under the EU Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). A cornerstone of the GDPR, accountability, requires staff training, but only half of the respondents have so far created a training programme. However, around 64% of the respondents already have a Data Protection Officer, and another 9% were going to appoint one before the GDPR enters into force on 25 May 2018. Half of the respondents were currently conducting a data protection audit, and by a large majority, this work was being done in-house. But worryingly, a quarter of the respondents said that they have reviewed less than 25%, or none of their data protection policies to make sure that they comply with the GDPR. The overwhelming majority, 82%, had already established the purposes for which they process personal data. But only 14 % had reviewed their supplier contracts from a data protection perspective. Most organisations had not yet reviewed their methods of obtaining consent from individuals, or were still working on it. The survey, which was sent to nearly 6,000 PL&B clients

36

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

By Victoria Anzola, www.seqqe.com

and prospects, sought organisations’ views on their GDPR readiness. The 251 respondents were mostly but not exclusively from the UK, and the survey ran between 31 May and 23 June. Microsoft makes changes to its DP compliance as a result of regulatory action in France Microsoft has made changes to how it processes personal data as a direct response to a formal notice in July 2016 by France’s Data Protection Authority, the CNIL. At the time, the regulator said that the company had excessive data collection practices, was tracking users’ web-browsing without their consent, and had insufficient procedures to guarantee the security and confidentiality of users’ data. Microsoft has improved its data security by making it impossible to use too frequently used common PIN code combinations. If individuals enter the wrong details, the company has introduced a temporary suspension of access. Microsoft now informs users that an adver tising ID is intended to track their web-browsing in order to offer them personalized adver tising. The installation procedure of Windows 10 has been modified and users cannot complete this installation unless they have expressed their choice regarding activation or deactivation of the adver tising ID. The GDPR is mandatory for all European companies not just for the large corporations!

KEY FEATURE Joffrey’s Las Mimosas “Joffrey’s Las Mimosas in La Cala de Mijas has been a dream in the making for many years for French chef Joffrey Charles and his partner, TV stylist and presenter, Lisa Burgess. The concept was to create a contemporary fine dining restaurant with a creative and tantalising menu using fresh and seasonal ingredients. An important part of that idea was an exceptionally warm welcome, excellent service and affordable pricing”. I had received many recommendations to try Joffrey’s Las Mimosas which is situated on the road that runs parallel with the A7 Fuengirola direction in between Riviera del Sol and La Cala de Mijas. I am so pleased I finally got to make it and I was not disappointed. Joffrey’s is truly a family-run restaurant with Joffrey as Chef, his wife, Lisa, as front of house and daughter, Georgia as waitress. Joffrey’s is currently open from Monday

to Saturday from 6 – 10.30pm, but check their Facebook page for autumn updates. Joffrey’s comfortably seats 60 which includes the large terrace. Joffrey’s is also available for private parties. One of the things that is so refreshing about Joffrey’s is that they do not own a freezer or microwave so everything is freshly prepared. I was blown away not only by the presentation of the food, but also by the perfect mix of flavours, colours and textures. The cuisine at Joffrey’s is “Art on a Plate! You will find more information in the Restaurant Reviews in this section of the magazine. In the meantime, please note that Channel 4 is filming at Joffrey’s throughout the summer for the next series of “A New Life in the Sun”. check that delivery is available and also if the restaurant is closed on any nights during the cooler months. Puerto Puerto Cabopino Cabopino

La Plaza Bar Lovely, relaxed venue at the entrance to the picturesque port of Cabopino. Full menu of exotic cocktails. Happy Hour Cocktails at only 4 Euros, served from 17.00 – 21.00. Mixed Cheese and Cold Cuts Platter for 2 persons now available. Brian is a familiar face in Cabopino as Brian’s La

Plaza Bar is well established. It is in the Plaza just before you enter the port of Cabopino. This is a lovely, relaxed venue where there is a full menu of exotic cocktails to include Pimms, Sangria, Mojito, Daiquiri, Sex on the Beach etc. Beers, wine, exotic coffees, soft drinks and milk shakes are also served. Popular place for a pre-dinner drink or to spend time chilling after you have eaten. Relax with a cocktail or a special coffee. A great place especially if you have some friends over from back home as you will be able to have a good chat and not be drowned out by loud music! Have a nice stroll viewing the boats in the port and then enjoy a great night out! Key recommended.

Lemongrass Now established in the Doña Lola complex, Calahonda. Fresh produce and authentic cuisine with Thai chef. Open every evening* from 6 – 11.30pm. Booking recommended. Takeaway service available. We have eaten at Lemongrass many times and in my opinion, Lemongrass is the best Thai restaurant on the coast with a native Thai chef in its kitchen. Unusually the menu included Som Tam (Shredded Green Papaya Salad) for starters - exactly as I remember it – perfect taste with the small peanuts as well and it packed a punch with the chilli! Other starters include a selection of favourite Thai soups, Special Thai Chicken Salad, Glass Noodle Salad etc as well as Chicken Satay, Thai Spring Rolls, Thai Fish Cakes or better still, the Mixed Starter for 2. Main courses are made from Chicken, Beef or Lamb, Duck, Prawns or Fish. Personal recommendations include Chicken Green Curry, Crispy Roasted Duck with Thai Sweet Chilli Sauce & Basil Leaves, Stir-fried Prawns with Spring Onion & Ginger and Sweet & Sour Prawns (Thai style has a completely different flavour). There is a good selection of different rice and I particular enjoy the Fried Rice with Eggs. Lemongrass also serves a very good Pad Thai Noodle dish. Thai food can be VERY spicy, so best to ask for a little bit of spice the first time to see how you go! The Mango with Sticky Rice for Dessert is also delicious. The venue has a closed, glass curtain, outdoor terrace and limited seating indoors (which is air conditioned) so booking is recommended as Lemongrass is already very popular. Please

SLEEP ANGEL

We spend a good part of our lives asleep. We have all seen pictures of what kind of “nasties” can share our pillows with us and we are also aware that although we can wash our pillow cases on a regular basis, the actual pillows can retain nasty sweat marks and that after time, sometimes do not smell the freshest either! It is expensive and time-consuming to wash and dry the actual pillows, especially if you rent out your property and have a regular turnover of clients for whom you need to keep your property in peak condition. Wouldn’t it be great if they invented a pillow that was not only comfortable to rest your head on all night, but was also hypoallergenic and all you had to do to keep it fresh was give it a wipe over? Well at SleepAngel they have done exactly that. SleepAngel have invented a pillow with a unique and patented filter that blocks allergens and bacteria from entering the pillow. Not only is the pillow extremely hygienic and easy to maintain, it also supports your head while you are asleep so you wake up feeling totally refreshed. When you change the pillow case, all you need to do is give the pillow a quick wipe over. The SleepAngel is also the perfect solution if you have hot flushes in the night as it keeps your head cool. SleepAngel have a range of pillows – for the home either made from microfiber or memory foam with various sizes etc available and also pillows suitable for hotel and medical use. The SleepAngel pillow is already used in various hospitals in the UK, Switzerland, Finland & The Middle East. Whether you simply want to ensure you pillow is healthy and fresh, you rent out properties, own a hotel or are a therapist, see page 11 for more information about the SleepAngel range of pillows. We at Key to Mijas Costa are proud owners of the SleepAngel home pillows. We were really surprised by how well the pillow supports your head and therefore gives you a really good night’s sleep. We also love the fact that they are so easy to keep clean. SleepAngel pillows are a Key Recommended product.
