KEY FEATURE What are you Leaving Behind in 2017? What are you NOT taking with you into 2018? I heard about a “NOT” to-do list and thought the concept was brilliant. There are so many things which we put in our to-do lists because we believe we should, but we never get to; either because they aren’t important, they are things we aren’t passionate about, or they are things we should delegate, or we should just say ‘NO’. As we head towards the end of the year, how about clearing and “decluttering” your list before the 12 bells toll! I have lots of “should do”, “could delegate” and “don’t really want to”. They can usually be spotted because of your ability to use all those wonderful diversionary tactics to avoid doing them! To start with:1. Why? It may sound simple, but why is it there and why haven’t you done it? Think about the other things you could be doing which would be more beneficial to your business, or your life, if you removed THOSE items from your list. Start by grading your list into things you really have to do to earn money for your business and prioritise. Downgrade those

which are just nice to do. Could you be a bit ruthless and just decide you aren’t ever going to get to it and delete it from your list (and your life)? 2. Can you do it? Is this something that you can actually do, or do you need to pass it on to someone who has the knowledge, skills (and time) to get it done? There are many virtual assistants, gestoria or social media managers who are able to help you out with tasks like general admin, accounts and social sharing (and they even like doing them!) 3. Collaborate Can you collaborate with someone to swap what you don’t have time for, the skills or desire to finish, in exchange for you helping someone else with something you have the skills to complete? However your list looks as you head into 2018 I wish you a very focussed-filled New Year! Ali Meehan - Founder – costawomen.com (the free website for Women in Spain, or Women heading this way!)

KEY HEALTH Client Reviews

By Belinda Pamos

It is always such a pleasure to know that your clients appreciate your work so below you will find some reviews from my clients taken from Google and Facebook. “I can only highly recommend Sonrisa British Dental Clinic. Dr Belinda and her staff are very professional and helpful and the whole experience of having an implant was made much easier due to the relaxed ambience of the ultra modern clinic. I made a special trip back from the UK for the treatment to be finished and the final result was outstanding”. T.A. Oct 2017. “I am 64 years old and have visited many dentists. Most of them have been pretty good and some very good. I have to say though that Belinda and her team are truly exceptional. Always professional, clean, reasonable, thorough, gentle, friendly, relaxed, thoughtful and funny. Making the whole experience different. I trust them and wish them every success into the future”. P.W. Aug 2017. “The best Dentist I have ever been to. Excellent surgery with modern equipment. My wife is a nervous patient and Dr Belinda put her at ease immediately. She also inserted two implants for me that are better than real teeth and I highly recommend her to you”. F.B. Aug 2017 “Thanks to many recommendations, I finally decided to visit Sonrisa for a second opinion & I am so happy that I did! Wonderful welcome from Rachael on entrance & a lovely friendly

greeting from the Irish nurse! I am absolutely thrilled with the experience & the saving of €1000s in the process which I had been advised by my X dentist..... I had chipped the tips of 2 of my front teeth & in order to sort them Dr Belinda advised me to have my teeth whitened as otherwise the filling would look out of place. Yesterday I had veneer tips, no injection, no discomfort & what a difference it has made. I would thoroughly recommend this clinic. Very few people like to visit a dentist. I on the other hand enjoy my visits as I always leave smiling! I look forward to my next check up so that about sums this dental clinic up. Sheer professionalism”!!! J.A. Nov 2017. “Pleasant Treatment and compared to home, pleasant prices”. V.H. 5* Nov 2017. “I can’t say enough about the care, expertise and professional attention I received from Dr. Belinda and her team. Being an exceptionally nervous patient and having had recent emergency treatment from another dentist who made my problem worse and has now been corrected by Dr Belinda in a non painful way and I even returned for a check up and clean which I had been avoiding for some time. I have no hesitation in recommending Sonrisa for all aspects of dentistry”. C.C. 5* Nov 2017. “I have been to see Belinda quite a few times recently. It is a pleasure. No hint of pain when she is around. Can’t give more than 5 stars but if I could, I would”. Thank you all. C.L. 5* July 2017

KEY HEALTH Don’t Fall Victim to the Obesity Epidemic Be Sugar-smart and take Bio-Gluco Control Obesity is a huge and growing problem not just in Spain but across Europe. Latest figures show a quarter of Spain’s population is already obese with the World Health Organisation predicting that figure could rise to half the country’s population by 2030. With obesity increasing the likelihood of developing serious health conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and strokes, fighting back against the obesity epidemic has never been more important. Eating a balanced diet and taking regular exercise can help to keep your weight down and develop a healthier lifestyle, but it is also vital to cut down on the amount of sugar you eat. With tiredness, food cravings, hunger pangs and poor concentration all a result of unbalanced blood sugar levels, not being sugar-smart is catastrophic for health. However with sugar levels high not just in sweet treats like cake and chocolate but also in savoury foods, cutting down is harder than you think. This is where Bio-Gluco Control from Pharma Nord comes in. Bio-Gluco Control boasts an evidence-based solution to sugar spikes and dips, helping to resist sugary temptation. Clinically proven to support normal blood sugar levels, Bio-Gluco Control’s patented organic chromium form is ten times better absorbed than other chromium supplements on the market. Bio-Gluco Control also contains Delphinol, a unique extract of the Chilean Maqui Berry, a purple berry investigated in clinical trials for blood sugar control and contains a rich complex of phytonutrients. The two key ingredients work in tandem, slowing the release of glucose into the bloodstream and then channeling the glucose out of the bloodstream and into your cells. The result is that highs and lows in blood sugar levels are smoothed out, avoiding the sudden peaks and dips in energy which can lead to cravings, snackings and afternoon snoozes. Taking Bio-Gluco Control regularly can help you keep the sugar cravings at bay. It worked for mother-of-two Laura Wilson, 33, who lost five stone in the space of a year. Laura explains: “I am a sugar addict and I always have been, it’s a life-long battle and it’s only when you manage to cut it out you realise what a hold it has on you. I would eat sweet treats all day and evening between meals, I used to joke that I was a ‘sugar pig’! “I managed to cut sugar out at first but it crept back in. The afternoons were the worst for me - I used to end up with crazy sugar cravings! When I heard about Bio-Gluco

By Pharmanord

Control, I thought it sounded ideal and was more than happy to give it a try. “Since taking the supplement I feel great! The main thing I have noticed with Bio-Gluco Control is that I no longer get dizzy, something that happened all the time before even when I had eaten. I just realised the other day it had stopped and there is no other explanation so I am really pleased with that as a result.” So, take your stand in the fight against obesity and get your sugar intake back in balance with Bio-Gluco Control. When you buy any box of 60 tablets of Bio-Gluco Control you’ll get a 30-tablet box of Bio-Selenium+Zinc FREE! Bio-Selenium+Zinc contains a wide range of important antioxidants including vitamins C, E and zinc, which protect our cells from the damaging effects of the sun, pollution and daily life. Bio-Selenium features SelenoPrecise, necessary for countless functions in the body and one of the most effective selenium products available on the market today!

KEY HEALTH Massage in Stress Management Stress is a normal part of life. There are two major types of stress: stress that is beneficial and motivating – that is the good stress. And then there is the bad stress that can cause anxiety and health problems that are detrimental to the body. Either type of stress triggers physiological responses: an increase in adrenaline production, an increase in heart and blood pressure and an increase in your breathing rate. These bodily responses are positive as long as you can channel them over a short period of time. If, on the other hand, there is no release, no matter how small, then stress becomes negative. Emotional stress that stays around for weeks or months can weaken the Immune System. The strain on the body of this negative stress can manifest itself in many ways including the following symptoms: chronic fatigue, headaches, change in appetite, lack of concentration, irritability/anger, muscle tension, problems falling asleep or staying awake, auto-immune illnesses, anxiety or depression. So, how can we manage our stress levels?

12

By Patricia Kaines

Watch out for signs of stress overload. We are all different, but we all know our own bodies. If something is not right we should be able to recognise the signs and act accordingly by introducing some lifestyle changes. Exercise reduces the stress hormones and fills the body with the much needed, feel-good endorphins. Practice some relaxation techniques such as: yoga, breathing exercises, meditation or book yourself a regular Massage treatment. Back in the UK, I worked for the NHS and was very lucky to work in a forward thinking psychiatric unit in Wiltshire. We encouraged the patients, with permission from the consultant psychiatrists, to follow an holistic route to well-being which included, along with medication, the above techniques. Massage, Reiki and Exercise all played major roles in their rehabilitation. So, if you are suffering from stress, anxiety or any multitude of emotional problems and would like further information or to book an appointment please call Clinica Medicare in La Cala de Mijas on 952 835 776 or call me directly on 666 170 868.

KEY HEALTH Depression - What does it mean to you? “Pull your socks up!” “Get out of bed then you will feel better cos I would!”, “Get your act together and stop being lazy!” “You are being a misery and ruining all our lives!”, “I am here for you but it doesn’t make any difference, I might as well give up too!”, “You only care about yourself, we are all suffering because of you!” How many people suffering with depression have heard these comments with despair and self-loathing? With frustration and the feeling that no-one understands? No-one “gets” it! I am not talking about feeling fed up or low, as human beings we all feel this at times in our lives. I mean that gut-wrenching feeling of anguish when you recognise the beginning of an episode not knowing how long it may last or what effect it may have on you, your family and friends. Although, if it’s not your first experience, you could have a pretty good idea, which might only lead to further feelings of low self-esteem and emptiness. You may be facing that black tunnel alone without the chance of a glimmer of light; there may be loving people in your life but for how long if this carries on? And even if they are loyal you cannot feel their loving care from the vacuum you now inhabit. Depression is a very different state of being and as it is a term which is bandied around in our modern culture with gay abandon it can demean the severity of the problem for those who truly suffer. Some of the symptoms of depression are: • You feel like you’re not as good as other people. • You feel like your daily life is meaningless. • You yearn to be of service, but you have no idea what you have to contribute and why it matters. • You’re frequently worried that you’re not good enough, smart enough, thin enough, young enough, absolutely anything enough except perhaps, useless enough. • You feel like a victim of circumstances that are beyond your control. • You protect your heart with steel walls. • You often feel you don’t really matter and love doesn’t make a difference. • You’re always trying to fit in and belong, but you rarely feel like you do.

14

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

• You suffer from a variety of vague, hard to treat physical symptoms, such as fatigue, chronic pain, weight gain or loss, insomnia, skin disorders, or gastrointestinal symptoms (some of these symptoms can be a side effect of medication). • You struggle with being able to accept love and nurturing. • You frequently numb yourself with alcohol, drugs, sex, television, or excessive ‘busyness’. You’ve forgotten how to dream? There was a time when the medical world believed that depression was merely a chemical imbalance in the brain with the solution being a variety of medications to resolve and “cure” every aspect of your suffering. Then on top of that more medication would be given to deal with the numerous side-effects of what was supposed to be the panacea for all your ills. The list of these side-effects (as referred to aside in the list of symptoms) can range from insomnia, hives, tremors, painful menstruation, confusion, anxiety, impotence, gut problems and an increased risk of suicide in children and adolescents to name a few. Of course, not everyone suffers with any of the many side-effects, but in my experience of 35 years, there is always something. I am not saying that there is not an appropriate application for short-term medication sometimes. My concern is the ease with which this medication is often prescribed without any idea of when or how the individual may come off it or indeed how to manage the ongoing, recurring symptoms in any other way. Currently 3.5 million people in the UK are prescribed anti-depressants. Depression, which literally means ‘a lowering’ that occurs when energy/libido, which is normally available for day-to-day conscious living, becomes depleted, blocked, pulled down, or trapped in the depths of the unconscious. Depression can arise through an unresolved, repressed or forgotten grief, trauma, conflict or loss. It is often an emotional response to a sense of meaninglessness, lack of harmony with nature or a lack of truthfulness with oneself and others. Poor diet, hormone imbalance, seasonal changes, lack of sunshine and lack of exercise can contribute to depression. As can soulless environments, materialism, lack of imagination, damaging relationships, dull routine, empty forms of work, and apparent lack of life purpose. Most of us do

Provided by Medicare not know that we have disconnected from our soul or if you prefer, our sense of self, and we have come to accept as normal a numbness and lack of meaning in our lives. Let us focus on the idea that while depression can be debilitating, it can also have a creative outcome. For example, some depressions are caused by a lowering of consciousness in order to retrieve needed wisdom, or a creative and healing gift. As reluctant spiritual teacher, Jeff Foster would say, “from de-pressed to deep rest.” He suffered for a long time with depression and writes extensively and humanely about it. (“Depression; A spiritual reboot”, an article which can be found on the web). We have been seduced by the pharmaceutical answer to all ills: medication. We are brain-washed to believe that life is as it is presented on face-book rather than this being merely a snapshot in time and not a true representation of life in all its glory and suffering; a completely messy, fabulous reality. We are all aware of photo-shop but do we take it into account when comparing our lives with the glorious technicolour lives of all of our FB “friends”?

tion and not someone who wants to just suppress emotions and uncomfortable feelings with medication without a thought to addressing the whole of who we are. In other words, there is more to you than this condition even if that part of you gets lost or buried at times. Remember, reputable credentials are important but not enough in themselves. Look also for desirable personal qualities, such as compassion, wisdom based on experience, flexibility, respect for your values and experiences, and lack of desire to offer hasty advice, or to dominate and control. My belief is that the increase in the use of alcohol and drugs especially in the young, along with the increased suicide figures in young people (the highest in a decade), is a direct connection to this loss of soul/sense of self. I am not talking about religion here, I mean our connection with ourselves on a daily basis in a world where instant gratification and distraction with social media, computer games etc. are of paramount importance to many. People are literally dying with their desire to take the most-scary of “selfies” as one example of the craziness of this addiction. Let us be very clear, depression is not primarily another word for unhappiness. It is in many instances a response to the loss, a disconnection with who we truly are. It is presented as something to be avoided at all costs, to be medicated out of existence and to be greatly feared. As a conclusion I would say that it is important not to underestimate the impact of depression in our lives. KEY HEALTH Golf & Massage - The Missing Links? When most amateur golfers look towards improving their golf, there are three main facets that are looked at; lessons, practice and clubs. Lessons and practice will improve your technique and ability to hit and control the golf shot, and changing or altering your clubs will aid you in improving your golf. If I was to tell you that there is another method of improving your golf that is effective, inexpensive and guaranteed to make your golf better, would you be interested? Of course you would! To get to this, let’s look at the golf swing and what physically occurs: To put it simply, you wind up your body like a spring, creating potential energy, then in a controlled manner release the spring, creating kinetic energy that results in the club striking the ball. Simple! The picture above shows all the muscles used in the body to create this. There are a lot, aren’t there? So, it stands to reason that if there is any problem physically, it will have a direct consequence on your golf i.e. injury, lack of joint mobility, tight muscles. Anything that reduces your physical ability to strike the ball will affect your game. And it also makes sense that anything that you can do to improve mobility will also improve you game. The stronger the ‘core’ of the body, the better the support

to the spine, and consequently, the better the golf swing throughout the game. Dynamics of the Golf Swing So, how do we achieve a strong core? Through physical conditioning and proper nutrition. I’m not saying you need to go gym crazy, but a little exercise on a regular basis combined with good nutrition will go a long way to improving posture, releasing back pain, and, of course, improving your golf! Conclusion If you are serious about wanting to play better golf, then having lessons and changing your clubs/balls/footwear etc. is only half of the story. Most golfers, especially those that have retired to the Costa, miss the other half of the story completely. Massage is a very inexpensive and effective result to improve your golf game, and even more important, requires absolutely no effort from you except for lying on a soft table for an hour! Give it a try and see why professionals get massage before and during every major tournament! For more information on this article or to book an appointment see contact details below. KEY ASTROLOGY Saturn and Uranus -

The Mover & Shaker Planets in 2018 It’s no surprise many of you are saying what a roller-coaster year 2017 has been; and you’re not wrong! There were more than a few planetary aspects this year that weighed heavily on us personally and globally. However the good news is 2018 looks to be less challenging and stressful, it has a calm and efficient air, almost serious… but then (serious) Saturn is moving into its own sign of Capricorn on the 20th December 2017 and will remain there until December 2020. Both Saturn and the positive expressions of Capricorn are structured, hardworking, persistent, resilient, practical, and willing to do whatever it takes to achieve the best version of themselves. Saturn is at home in Capricorn and when a planet is going through its own sign, it is able to express its best qualities. That isn’t to say we’re not going to experience any ups and downs during the year (that could be boring!) but any that do crop up will be manageable so long as we take a responsible attitude, especially towards the economy and our personal finances. Saturn in Capricorn is where we run out of excuses and must face reality without rose-coloured glasses! Saturn teaches us patience and urges us to take things rather more slowly, so if you are the kind of person who crashes through life at top speed you may come to a resounding halt at some point. However if that happens there will be a good reason and the downtime will help you reflect on your direction in life whether it’s career, relationship, location etc. Is it working? Is it right for you? Make no mistake this coming year will require effort. Freedom is not about escaping responsibilities or breaking rules. We grow through failures as much as successes and need to let go of self-defeating attitudes that could hold us back; recognise any over-expectations and see how these may have contributed to frustration or feeling let-down. Saturn transiting through Capricorn demands sincerity and authenticity, with quality always overriding quantity! Also, in order to benefit and learn from this transit, we need to accept that some options may be limited purely for us to enjoy a simpler, more fulfilling life. A strange phenomenon that occasionally happens is when our chosen direction does an about turn and life sends us another way…yet always for the right reason even if we can’t see it at the time! The more negative expressions of Capricorn, like excessive materialism, pessimism, and rigidity, are things that won’t work for us now. These will be in the spotlight of Saturn’s stern eye and it will become evident there is a price to pay for this behaviour or that too much time, energy and happiness has been lost on these things! What we are now striving towards is order, integrity, patience, and perseverance. This applies on a global as well a personal level and governments/ big corporations/politicians will also be under the scrutiny of

Saturn during the next three years. Hey ho, watch this space! The next big planetary change in 2018 will be Uranus as it moves from spontaneous and fiery Aries (where it has been since 2011) into steadfast and earthy Taurus! Uranus represents change in any form. It is revolutionary, rebellious, futuristic as well as unpredictable and can surprise us when we least expect it! While Uranus has been going through Aries it fired up the engines of change with significant advancements in science and technology … life on planet Earth will never be the same! At the moment we are only seeing the tip of the iceberg as we step into an as yet unknown future that could reveal some ingenious discoveries and innovations still on someone’s drawing board! (Have you checked yours lately?). But change doesn’t happen overnight and in slow moving Taurus, perseverance and patience will be key. When Saturn and the outer Planets (Uranus, Neptune and Pluto) move from one sign to another it is a huge step … remembering that each has spent many years in one sign. The two major planetary influences above will undoubtedly affect all our lives in one way or another and to one degree or another. Although Astrology can never make an exact prediction it can reveal certain trends and the most beneficial path for us to take. From the Saturnian point of view, we need to recognise and let go of old patterns that are holding us back in order to move forward with a clear vision. Discipline and a more serious outlook towards the future are what’s required… that is, the future of each and every one of us on this Planet. And Uranus? Well if you have been contemplating innovative or unusual ideas, projects or inventions (Uranus) of a practical nature (Saturn) then next year could see a breakthrough for you. Perseverance and dedication will reap the rewards you’ve been seeking. For those who would like to learn more about Astrology I’m proposing a Beginners Workshop (maximum 5 persons) in Mijas at the end of January 2018. KEY HEALTH Personal Report on The Real CBD Oil In the last issue you may have read about CBD Oil. Having some medical problems, we decided to give this a try as CBD Oil products have already been available on the mainstream market for several years now and we hear of so many people that have benefitted from this. The Real CBD Oil products are available from Vital Y Tes which can be found near the Torreon in La Cala. Firstly I would like to say how knowledgeable Vincente is of all his products. He is very patient and speaks excellent English. Vital Y Tes stock a good selection of Cannabis Oil products and we decided to try the product from www.therealcbd. com, which is Organic Full Spectrum CBD Oil and 100% natural plant based. On this website you will find all sorts of useful information that I am sure will put your mind at rest when considering trying this product, including: • Will I get high? • Is it legal? • Can I overdose • How do I take it? Whilst we have only been testing the product for a short

space of time, we are already starting to feel the benefits. We have been noticing its pain relieving and anti-inflammatory properties and have found it to help. We are also pleased that the product is natural, made from the Hemp plant and using only the flowers and leaves, rather than taking chemical based products. We have experienced some relief from chronic pain, although at this point of writing this article, we have not used the product for a significant amount of time yet. I also suffer from Crohn’s Disease and my abdomen is often very hard and swollen. I have noticed that a substantial part of this area is much softer to the touch already. I have also found that my nails seem much stronger and that I have much more energy. I will continue to use the product and will update you in the next issue. My conclusion is that I have not experienced any ill effects from using this product and have already found benefits in a short space of time. I would recommend a visit to Vital Y Tes, La Cala de Mijas and let Vincente help you choose which product would benefit you the most.

KEY HEALTH Eat Yourself Slim

By Jon Stark

As Gillian McKeith says, “You are what you eat”. Many of us were horrified watching her methods on her TV programmes, but as she says, “If you do what I tell you, it will happen and you will lose weight. I can second that from my own weight loss story. To eat yourself slim there are plenty of options to try. Everybody is juicing and making Smoothies and you can start to cleanse your body with them. If you find it hard to know what fruits and vegetables to use, remember green is best. You could start to introduce beans and whole grains. If you are a meat or fish lover, try to keep it to 3 times per week - if you plan it well, you can get all you need in your diet to get slim without being hungry plus be full of energy to take on the day. All it takes is some planning and some tips for cooking healthily and with less oil and still get great results in your kitchen. Always have in mind to do some exercise like cycling, walking, yoga etc. - the choice is yours to activate your metabolic rate and start burning

calories and tone your muscles. Bear in mind that even if you don’t have a gym membership, you can still do some outdoor activities. For the people who worry about the protein intake in a diet plan, always remember you can get vegetable proteins for balance. All you need to do is combine the beans of your choice, such as chickpeas, red pinto beans, black beans etc with whole grains like brown rice, quinoa, millet and wild rice. There are many different recipes where you can use these two ingredients adding great flavour and texture, including some lovely soups and curries as well as sweet, baked goods. My advice on healthy eating for all food lovers is to try something different - you never know, you might just love great food full of nourishment for your health. If you need any help, I do consultations to help you in your journey. I wish you all Happy Holidays!

KEY SPORTS Kane Goal Is Lineker-Esque

By Steve Billingham

England v Slovenia, World Cup Qualifier, 5 October The match was stale-mate until the 94th minute when Kyle Walker broke down the right and crossed and Harry Kane prodded home Lineker style to break the deadlock and give England the winner.

deep in the second half, recalled for his first cap in 4 years.

The move was actually very reminiscent of Gary Stevens and Gary Lineker in the 1980’s, Lineker’s first against Poland in the 1986 World Cup went in in a very similar fashion. Slovenia actually had a very tight defence and their number 6 showed what a capable player he is. Joe Hart made 2 good blocks in the second half while Raheem Sterling, in for the injured Dele Alli, was disappointing and substituted. England though, through to Russia for the World Cup Finals.

Still, England can keep clean sheets against Germany and Brazil and the defence looked pretty solid in both matches.

The final qualifying match in Group F between Lithuania and England was a largely dull affair and settled by the one goal from the penalty spot by Harry Kane in the 27th minute. Jack Butland won his 6th cap in the England goal and Spurs, Harry Winks, made his debut in midfield, refreshingly in a pair of black football boots. Then in early November came two England friendlies with Germany and Brazil. The Germans had several injuries as did England who fielded several younger players such as Everton goalkeeper, Jordan Pickford, and Rupert Loftus-Cheek in midfield. Pickford made a decent block on 22 minutes before Phil Jones headed off the line and at the other end and Ter Stegen did well to keep out a Jamie Vardy downwards header on 48 minutes. The match finished goal-less. ‘Trippier had quite a good match,’ remarked an observer. The following Tuesday England were again successful in keeping a clean sheet shutting out Brazil in a 0-0 draw. Neymar did not have his scoring boots on, his shooting was poor and off target, high and wide. Ashley Young came on,

22

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

Liverpool’s Solanki came on in the second half and had a half chance which he might have hit first time but he couldn’t control the ball properly.

An Interesting Fact Jordan Pickford became the first goalkeeper from Everton since Gordon West to be picked for England when he was selected against Germany. Gordon West played 3 times for England in 1968-69 and was a standby keeper in the provisional squad of 40 for England’s 1966 World Cup squad although omitted from the 22. So if you like, he was the England number 4 keeper in 1966 with Tony Waiters the number 5. Something like that anyway. SNOOKER Murphy’s Law A very good final in the Champion of Champions tournament at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry between Shaun Murphy without a win in 5 years in the tournament and Ronnie O’Sullivan who had thrashed John Higgins 6-0 in an earlier round. Two key points in the match. At 4-4 O’Sullivan jawed a black which he might have rolled in deadweight and Murphy knocked it in to edge in front for the midsession interval. Murphy then extended his lead to 8-4 and 9-5 before ‘The Rocket’ went on a run to reduce the arrears to 8-9. Then, when on a break and looking like he was going to level up the match, O’Sullivan missed the final green into the middle pocket, letting Murphy back in to clear the remaining colours and claim the 10-8 victory.

KEY FEATURE Crochet Rag Rug You can make your own fabric yarn by cutting a duvet cover or some sheets into strips. As with the t-shirt yarn, 2.5 cm (1”) strips work the best, being neither too thick (difficult to work with) or too thin (might tear easily). You can use a duvet cover as it is already a tube (once you’ve cut the bottom off) or old sheets, and can be cut in the same way as the t-shirt yarn above, just on a way bigger scale. But if you have separate strips of fabric that you would like to link together I have given diagrams above. The advantage of using non-stretch fabric yarn is that it acts very much like yarn would in that it does not buckle and ‘bowl’ quite as easily as jersey cotton. The disadvantage of using non-stretch fabric for your crochet rug is that it does not stretch AT ALL. So where yarn would give you a little bit of stretch, making it easy to get into stitches on subsequent rounds, non-stretch fabric yarn does not budge.

By Genavieve Dupoix I recently found that the Chinese Bazaars sell this quite cheaply in a cone - 2.50 Euros to 3.00 Euros in various solid colours. You will also need a 16mm crochet hook. I started with a base chain of 75 for the width as I need it oblong. You can decide the pattern first if you want bold colours in blocks, or multicoloured. Next row is a single crochet into each chain. Insert hook from front to back in the centre of the second chain from the hook, wrap the yarn over the hook, draw from back to front (2 loops on hook) yarn over hook and, draw the yarn through the 2 loops on hook. Now continue to the end of the row and the same every row after until you have the required size. Placemats and coasters are also perfect gifts for Christmas. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

KEY PETS Dog Grooming in Winter (Part 1) There are some amazing benefits of still keeping up grooming of your dogs during the winter. Don’t be fooled into thinking that by allowing your dog’s fur to become long, dense and matted will keep them warm. Long, dense, knottie or matted fur will result in a few problems. Damp or wet weather will result is a serious health issue should the dog’s fur be knottie, matted or dense as the dead fur will remain damp for much longer resulting in the risk of the dog becoming cold, thus resulting in the risk of infection. The damp fur can cause many types of skin issues including fungus overgrowth – a huge problem in dogs both in the winter and the summer months. Damp fur tightens (this is why you should never bath a dog that is matted) causing pinching of the skin and extreme itching. Please remember a matted dog is not a happy dog and worse, they could be experiencing pain from skin being pulled, mats hiding thorns, fleas, ticks etc. During the

28

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

By Joanna Fluer Oxley

winter, grooming should be viewed the same as at any other time of the year, an important part of your dog’s health care. Like myself, dog groomers offer hair styles that will ensure the dog does not feel the cold. For example, I offer a winter teddy bear/puppy clip – it’s the same haircut but by using blades that do not cut away undercoat or dense fur, we can still shorten the fur without taking their warmth. During the winter, indoor dogs can also struggle with skin and coat problems as the air is much dryer in the home, less windows open, heating etc can really dry out a dog’s coat which is why I offer the “winter warmer” – a wonderful hydrating bath, followed by a warming massage using my very own 100% natural oils, finished by a blow dry to help remove dry skin. Many dog owners do not feed their dog’s skin and coat by the use of natural, dog-safe oils, and even worse, they overuse chemical shampoos that smell wonderful but strip all natural oils from the dog’s skin and coat.

KEY COMPUTERS Laptop vs Tablet: Which is Right for You? When it comes to buying a new portable computer, these days you’re no longer limited to the laptop option. Tablets are a viable alternative for many people looking to get things done on the go. Essentially, this is going to come down to what you want to do with your new purchase. Portability When it comes to portability, there’s no question that tablets offer the best option. In general, tablets are 7-11 inches, while laptops are 12-16 inches, which immediately means that the former are going to be easier to carry around. But if you’re going for one of the larger tablets you might want to consider whether getting a small laptop is going to work out better for you. It will likely weigh slightly more but in terms of size, the larger tablets and smaller laptops are very similar. Performance This is fairly simple. Laptops are going to provide advanced performance in comparison to tablets, simply due to the fact that their larger cases can pack in more hardware. Multitasking, for instance, is easier on a laptop than it is on a tablet. In terms of performance, laptops will always have better specs than tablets. That doesn’t mean tablets will run slowly or won’t offer a smooth user experience, it simply means that laptops are equipped for more intense tasks. Battery Due to their smaller size, tablets will always have a better battery life than laptops. It’s simply a matter of not having to power as much hardware, or as big a screen, which allows the smaller devices to maintain more charge than a laptop. Still, more expensive laptops can last longer, but again, you’ll have to pay more to get a laptop that can hold its charge almost as well as a tablet. Software When it comes to software, tablets are centred around apps while laptops offer a more versatile desktop experience. If you want to use in-depth programmes such as Photoshop or Logic or anything that demands more than tapping a screen can accommodate, then a laptop is your best bet. In terms of gaming, if you’re looking for something capable of running somewhat demanding games, a laptop is the only choice. Although tablets offer gaming capabilities, they will

By Computer City

not come near the processing power that laptops can offer. Storage You’re going to get more internal memory with a laptop, so if you’re going to be working with multiple files that you need to keep on your machine, laptops offer the best solution. Which should I Buy? It all comes down to what you want to use it for. It also depends on which tablet you’re thinking about buying. However, then the question becomes, if a tablet is trying to be a laptop, why not just buy a laptop? Computer City has a large range of tablets and laptops for you to choose from. KEY LAW WARNING!

By Victoria Anzola, www.seqqe.com

Small Businesses Face Huge Fines if they Ignore New Data Protection Rules Personal data means a name, a photo, an email address, bank details, posts on social networking websites, medical information or a computer IP address. Small businesses are being warned that they risk enormous fines if they ignore an overhaul of data protection rules that will affect organisations of all sizes. Organisations that fail to comply can be fined up to 4 per cent of their annual global turnover, or €20 million, whichever is larger. The general data protection regulation rules, which emanate from Brussels, are designed to hand control of personal data to individuals rather than organisations. The biggest change in a quarter of a century in how companies process information, such as customer lists and employee records, comes into force next May, yet there is little awareness among smaller organisations. Businesses must be much clearer on how customer data is collected and stored, they have to make it easier for customers to tell organisations to “forget” them and must provide greater protection for children. Any data breaches (as a result of hacking, for example) must be communicated within three days to

34

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

the Information Commissioner’s Office, the data regulator. Companies will be required to obtain an unequivocal “positive indication of agreement” to personal data being processed. Silence will no longer count as consent. The European Union says that the rules will “reshape the way organisations across the region approach data privacy”. The UK government has indicated that Britain’s decision to leave the EU will not affect the introduction of the rules. GDPR brings a 21st century approach to data protection, and with it significant responsibilities for organisations, and enhanced rights for consumers. In Spain as in the rest of Europe the GDPR affects all small and large companies. A survey of more than 1,000 small companies, commissioned by Irwin Mitchell, a law firm, found that 78 per cent had not heard of the new rules, while 86 per cent were not aware of the threat of fines. Only 11 per cent had started preparing for it. Source – The Times

KEY LAW Change of Fortunes

Provided by The Equity Release Victims Association – erva.es

Banks Set to lose Millions Worth of Equity Release Contracts A recent ruling by the Appeal Court of Bilbao -confirming an earlier ruling by the Court of First instance is to set the ground for future cases on the so-called Equity Release mortgage loans. Three Judges in the Basque High Court have ruled that banks and by extension any other financial services company that do not have a valid operating license, will see their agreements declared null and void, be it mortgage loans, investment contracts or any other. In late 2014, 20 pensioners (mostly British) bought an action to set aside 12 equity release mortgage loans worth 6 million Euros against SLM, a Cheshire-based lender. The lender had not secured the mandatory regulatory license although they did warn they had no license to operate in Spain as, according to them, they were only providing lending for customers seeking to raise cash on their homes.

36

KEY TO MIJAS COSTA

Now, the Bilbao Appeal Court has said the warning was no ‘mitigating’ factor because it misled the claimants into believing that the loan they were sold was financially secure when, in fact, most of it was invested via unregulated Isle of Man-based-dubious Premier-Group. The relevance of the ruling, which brings an end to the suffering of the victims of this scam, is twofold: it nullifies contracts issued by unregulated companies and it fully endorses the allegations of the claimants that the widely publicized Inheritance Tax benefits were false, emphasizing that such conduct is deceitful and fraudulent. It is believed that defunct Luxembourg-based Landsbanki Bank had lent a staggering 100 million euros in Spain to reduce death duties that thankfully will be difficult to recoup, whilst Rothschild Group could be set to lose 40 million Euros.
