Rodeo Austin’s

World Champion Rodeo Austin is proud to sponsor five elite ProRodeo athletes, including 2013 World Champion bull rider J.W. Harris. These athletes are chosen by Rodeo Austin to be ambassadors of the brand, based not only on skill and success in the sport of rodeo, but on character and values. Four-time World Champion Bull Rider J.W. Harris is as humble and down to earth as they get. When asked about his recent success and future goals, Harris responded, “I’ve been lucky to have such success and I

look forward to what the future holds but I don’t want to put a number on it. I don’t want to ride for too long. I just want to go out as a great bull rider.” Of course, life as a ProRodeo athlete can be difficult, and Harris says that staying healthy on the road is his biggest challenge. He pushes himself to grow as a bull rider and loves the sport of rodeo because it gives him the freedom to go wherever he wants and

follow any path. Harris also has a passion for rodeo for reasons beyond the competition. “It is an honor to be supported by an organization with a mission of advancing youth and the western lifestyle. The kids are the future of rodeo and without organizations supporting them and this way of life, there is no future in what I do.” When asked if he has a mantra that he lives by, Harris simply replied, “I just do.”

deo “Kids are the future of ro ns and without organizatio is supporting them and th ture way of life, there is no fu in what I do.”

A Day in the Life of J.w. harris Life as a bull rider can be extreme. When he’s not on the road, Harris spends his time with his wife and children. Even then, he focuses on his job, devoting hours on end to staying in shape and mentally figuring out ways to get better each and every day. Although he says he doesn’t have a set routine, Harris’ schedule while on the road becomes a little more structured – fitting in autographs, interviews, rest and physical preparation. “I don’t do superstitions and I don’t get too worked up. I get to the arena two hours early to prepare and then most importantly, I just have fun.”

BBQ Auction & Dance Temperatures and spirits were high on the evening of Saturday, January 11, 2014 as guests twostepped through the doors of Austin Music Hall. As music poured from the speakers, the Rodeo Austin BBQ Auction and Dance kicked off the rodeo season. Rows of silent auction items—ranging from a Lammes Candies gift basket to a freshwater pearl necklace - lined the live music hall. Following a BBQ dinner, Rodeo Austin President-Elect Hap Feuerbacher took to the microphone to kick off the evening’s live auction. When the final piece was auctioned off, folks put down their bidder numbers and kicked up their boots to the rock ‘n’ roll beats of Johnny Dee’s Rocket 88’s. The band played everything from oldies to country favorites. After the dance floor cleared and the last winners collected

Guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres as they viewed pieces ranging from a guitar-playing cowboy sketch to a still photo of a windmill at dusk. By 5:30 p.m., the Driskill Ballroom was packed as the coronation of the 2014 Miss Rodeo Austin Scholarship Contest began. Scholar Spotlight As a 2011 Rodeo Austin scholar, Chloe Banks is not your typical scholarship recipient. She chose to give back to the organization that gave to her. The recent University of Texas graduate has completed three Rodeo Austin internships over the years and is currently in her fourth internship as Rodeo Austin’s exhibits intern. Chloe says it’s the positive attitudes in the office that play a major part in her returning each year. “I love the people here,” she said. “They are so kind. The people that I work with are very uplifting and hardworking.” Chloe’s background further adds to her interest in all things Rodeo Austin. “I grew up doing the Rodeo Austin livestock shows and I loved that part of it. And then, being an intern, I’m able to hold onto that a little bit—just in a different aspect.” Chloe attended Austin’s Anderson High School and was the only student in her high school involved in 4-H. This didn’t deter Chloe from competing in livestock shows. The Austin native showed everything including rabbits, lambs, steers and goats. During her high school years, Chloe also served as club president for both Wilbarger Creek 4-H and Travis County 4-H. Prior to enrolling in the University of Texas as a philosophy major, Chloe was awarded a $5,000 Rodeo Austin scholarship. Chloe says that one of the best things

Chloe Banks

about the scholarship was becoming aware of the other facets of Rodeo Austin. “I actually got involved with Rodeo Austin’s annual Gala through my scholarship,” Chloe said. Following this year’s rodeo, Chloe will be moving to South Africa to help establish housing for low-income families. But no matter where she roams, Rodeo Austin is a place she will return. “I’ll definitely still come back and be involved in some capacity of volunteering,” she said. And to indulge in some tasty Rodeo Austin treats. “I get pizza on a stick every year,” Chloe said, recalling the memory with a smile. “I have loved that since I was little.”
