I am incredibly proud to have served as President of Rodeo Austin this past year. I chose Year of the Volunteer as my “mantra” to lead Rodeo Austin through 2016 - 2017. With this focus, Rodeo Austin’s volunteer base increased by 328 new members, who each joined the organization with a passion for raising money for Texas Youth. The dedication each of these volunteers brought to their committees is a large part of the success Rodeo Austin celebrates today, thank you! In 2017, Rodeo Austin stayed true to the slogan, Where Weird Meets Western, with a perfect mix of traditional livestock and rodeo staples and unique Austin food trailers, a famous camel and a 600lb pig! With a fresh goal of embracing the Austin vibe, the Rodeo Austin Fairgrounds included brand new additions of a craft beer garden and the Taste of Texas tent. After a successful season of fundraisers, the Cowboy Breakfast and BBQ Austin kicked off the March festivities on March 3rd, Dress Western Day. Despite a very rainy Saturday, BBQ Austin had a record number of entries in the BBQ Cook-Off and a very successful event overall. The Fair and Rodeo took place March 11-25, 2017, and welcomed a revived north Fairgrounds, nearly 100 live concerts, exciting shows from Fairgrounds entertainers, ProRodeo action, a world-class livestock show and Austin’s largest carnival. Rodeo Austin’s Ride for the Brand Cowboy Tournament returned to showcase the world’s top 96 ProRodeo athletes in each event competing for more than $520,000 in prize money. More than 71,000 fans filled the arena to witness the action play out in the progressive bracket-style format featuring Qualifying, Playoff and Final Rounds. Rodeo fans who couldn’t attend this year had the opportunity to watch the Playoff and Final Round performances broadcast on the Longhorn Network. Rodeo Austin Competitive Events saw more than 8,000 exhibitors. This year’s Youth Auction was held on March 24, 2017 at the Bullock Texas State History Museum and awarded a record of more than $1.44 million to junior livestock exhibitors and Youth Western Art Show students.
