“What a blessing to receive such support to help me achieve my dream of becoming a veterinarian. I am amazed how much Rodeo Austin cares about its scholars. I will do my best to make you proud.” Carling Urben, 2012 Scholar at Sam Houston State University

“The incredible generosity of Rodeo Austin has forever impacted my life by making my dream of attending college possible. I am forever grateful for this scholarship” Dane Rivas, 2015 Scholar at Texas Tech University

“The Rodeo Austin Scholarship provides me the means not only to pursue my education financially, but also gives me the resources and connections to launch me into the future.” Jason Edmondson, 2016 Scholar at Texas A&M University

Scholarship Program Rodeo Austin is proud to feature the Scholarship Program as the shining star of the overall youth giving plan. Rodeo Austin works year-round to raise funds for the Scholarship Program, so that each year, a new class of students can receive funding for their college education.

Who benefits Students from all walks of life benefit from Rodeo Austin Scholarships. These recipients have proven themselves academically and within their community, meeting high standards set by Rodeo Austin. Scholars over the years have gone on to pursue diverse careers in the areas of medicine, law, agriculture, business, the arts and more.

The selection process Rodeo Austin partners with select colleges, universities and educational organizations in Texas. Each entity is granted a specific number of scholarships to award. They then review applicants and choose those who meet the scholarship requirements set by Rodeo Austin.

The qualifications The foremost element determining selection is substantial financial need. Most of the students come from household incomes of $75,000 or less per year. Without a scholarship, college is just a dream for many of our students. Rodeo Austin Scholars must also be standout academic achievers. Ranked in the top of their high school class and A average students, recipients must maintain at least a 2.5 GPA while in college to continue receiving funds. Finally, the applicants must display community involvement. National Honor Society, FFA,

band, theater and service organizations are just a few of the activities scholars have historically participated in. Most continue their involvement in service organizations and hone their leadership skills while in college.

The impact Since its inception more than 35 years ago, Rodeo Austin’s Scholarship Program has awarded $8.7 million in scholarships to more than 2,400 students. In many cases, the financial support provided is undeniably the number one determining factor in whether or not that student can attend college. Equally as important, students know that a group of donors and supporters believe in their abilities. That support and responsibility helps them excel in college and in turn complete successful careers and live fulfilling lives.

Leaving a Legacy The Story of the Smith Endowment

Rodeo Austin boasts 42 endowment funds established to honor loved ones or organizations, and to leave a legacy in perpetuity. During Rodeo Austin’s 75th Anniversary year, the Smith Family created an endowment in memory of the late Niley J. Smith, and as a living legacy for Stephen Smith. Mr. Smith’s generous endowment helped the Rodeo Austin endowment reach and exceed the historic $1 million mark. The Smith

family story is in no doubt similar to many of those who support the mission. Niley J. Smith graduated from Texas A&M University in 1938 with a degree in Agriculture. His love for the university was well known by friends and family. The Smith Family Farm is a part of The Family Land Heritage Program, which honors farms and ranches that have been in continuous agricultural operation by the same family for 100 years or more. These deep agricultural roots make it most appropriate for the Smith Family to provide this memorial and living legacy through Rodeo Austin. Stephen Smith was drawn to the organization because the program, especially the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine scholarship, represents their family’s interest in the rural community. “It is an honor and privilege to have the opportunity to help Rodeo Austin reach this Scholarship Endowment milestone,” Smith said, “This is certainly a great way to give back to a school that my father loved very much.”
