RODEO AUSTIN

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Lance Lively

It has been my honor to serve as President of Rodeo Austin this past year. 20172018 was a turning point for the organization, beginning with a new format for the Shoot Out Sporting Clay Tournament, followed by a new addition to the Rodeo Austin Gala with our Youth Art Show, and a number of new and exciting activations for the Fair and Rodeo. As you will see in this report, it has been an incredible year. Over 250,000 people came through the gates this year and as I walked the grounds daily, you could see the excitement in volunteers and guests and you knew something special was happening. The staff and volunteers dared to try something different, and it paid off BIG TIME. It takes guts to roll the dice and try new things, and we all proved that we can make a difference in our community and become relevant once again. Rodeo Austin is not just a Fair and Rodeo, it’s more than 20 committees working throughout the year to achieve our mission of Promoting Youth Education – Preserving Western Heritage. We began the year with a new and revised Shoot Out Sporting Clay Tournament and challenged the shooting teams to go a step further to not only compete on the course but to compete for the title of the top fundraiser. It was a very successful event and one I hope to see grow in the coming years.

4

The BBQ Auction & Concert was also huge success. Neal McCoy headlined the show and guests were treated to great music, great food, and a very successful live and silent auction. The growth potential in this event is enormous and is gaining ground quickly. For the first time, the Youth Art Show was held in conjunction with the Rodeo Austin Gala and it was an amazing success. The Rodeo Austin Gala continues to be a big fundraiser for Rodeo Austin. This year, we went from 23 pieces of art in the Youth Auction to 60 pieces of art, which means 60 Texas children received money for their hard work and artistic efforts. BBQ Austin weekend kicked off with an extremely successful Cowboy Breakfast. Every media outlet in Austin picked up the event and got Central Texas fired up for Rodeo Austin. We got halfway through BBQ Austin with great weather and then it got a little soggy. It did not dampen spirits as teams from across Texas competed for bragging rights, prize money, and those coveted trophies. The Fair and Rodeo took place March 10-24, 2018, and was bigger and better than ever. We added new things for attendees to see and do, like the bubble tower, butterfly encounter, and a newly expanded Beer & Wine garden, that by all accounts was a roaring success. Two weeks of great weather coupled with record sales in Rodeo & Concert tickets will make 2018 one of the best yet. The Youth Auction was held on March 23rd at a new venue, the ACL Live at Moody Theater in downtown Austin. The new location allowed auction buyers to occupy the lower floor, while exhibitors and their families had an excellent view from the mezzanine seats. There they witnessed a record-setting year where $1.58 million was awarded to Texas youth. All of these records are meant to be broken and I hope we can do that again next year. Because of all these events, Rodeo Austin will award more than $2.2 million to the youth of Texas in 2018. No one person can make Rodeo Austin succeed, the credit goes back to our volunteers, staff, corporate sponsors, guests and donors who all give their Time, Talent, and Treasure to make Rodeo Austin one of the largest non-profit charities in Austin, Texas. It has been my honor to serve with you for the past 12 months, and I’m looking forward to many bright years ahead as we do all that we can to take care of our most precious resource, the children of Texas.

L A N C E L I V E LY 2017-2018 Rodeo Austin President

MARKETING TRADITIONAL Television, Radio, Outdoor & Print

Rodeo Austin continued to spread the word of “Where Weird Meets Western” to the Austin market through the traditional advertising outlets of television, radio, billboards and print. In 2018, Rodeo Austin’s media buy included more than 1,000 television spots, 2,400 radio spots, 37 billboards and a handful of newsprint ads. In addition to these traditional advertising efforts, Rodeo Austin continued to increase the digital platform of advertising by serving more than 11 million digital impressions through digital ads across the internet. These ads directly generated $289,525 in tickets sales. New in 2018, Rodeo Austin was featured on the back of ten Capital Metro buses throughout Austin in the month of March for extra exposure to Austinites and visitors to the city. As in years past, Rodeo Austin displayed banners on Congress Avenue, expanding exposure to City Hall, Convention Center and the Congress Avenue Bridge. BILINGUAL OUTREACH Dia Del Vaquero

Rodeo Austin increased exposure to the Hispanic market through an increased radio and television advertising buy. Thirty percent of Rodeo Austin’s television campaign was run on Spanish language stations, and nearly 15% of the radio advertising buy was spent on Spanish language stations. One of the driving forces behind Spanish language advertising was the reintroduction of Dia del Vaquero – Hispanic Heritage Day on the Fairgrounds. This day featured all Spanish language bands on the Outdoor Stage and Duelo as the artist on the main stage following the ProRodeo. STREAMING Staying Connected

RATV, Rodeo Austin’s YouTube channel, streamed daily ProRodeo performances, Competitive Events and promotional videos. Rodeo Austin streamed a total of 777,451 minutes of video content during the Fair and Rodeo. Live-streaming brought in a total of 51,534 views from 130 different countries. The Playoffs and Final ProRodeo performances were also aired on Longhorn Network.

The 4-H Instructional Horse Show, a clinic for 4-H members, was offered for the first time in 2018. Forty exhibitors traveled to Austin to receive critique and feedback in a group setting from the state equine extension specialists from Texas A&M University.

The Ultimate Scramble Championship (USC) was held on Saturday, March 17, 2018, with 160 participants. A unique, one of a kind scramble, participants advanced in a tournament-style competition in the Wild West tent, all vying for a spot in the Finals in the Rodeo Arena.
