a message from the president

It has been my honor and pleasure to serve as President of Rodeo Austin for the past four years. During my time as President, Rodeo Austin has experienced its fair share of challenges and triumphs. The COVID-19 pandemic changed the way business was conducted. There was a lot of uncertainty, but Rodeo Austin proved that we are Gritty Enough to get through anything! We are proud to say 2022 was an extremely successful year.

The year started with Rodeo Austin’s Shoot Out Sporting Clay Tournament in late summer 2021. The event was held in a new location at Reunion Ranch in Georgetown. This year, Shoot Out saw record attendance and record funds raised.

In November, Rodeo Austin hosted Bulls in the Ballpark at Dell Diamond. The event was first held in 2020, is a unique collaboration to host bull riding on a baseball field. It was an action-packed weekend.

Moving into February, Rodeo Austin hosted the Gala and Youth Art Auction at Palmer Events Center with entertainment by Midland. The event sold out in record time and the live auction brought in record revenue. The highest selling live auction item featured a trip to visit the set of the “Yellowstone” TV series, which brought in over $100,000.

BBQ Austin weekend kicked off with an extremely successful Cowboy Breakfast at the Long Center in downtown Austin. I am forever amazed by the number of people that come out at 6:00 a.m. for a cup of cowboy coffee and biscuits and gravy. With lots of energy and media, it’s a great start to the Rodeo Austin season. BBQ Austin had over 43 new teams, and over 40,000 people enjoyed BBQ on Friday and Saturday.

Rodeo Austin took place March 12th through 26th for the first time since 2019! We had many nights of sold-out or standing-roomonly rodeo crowds. The grounds had several new attractions and expanded events to entertain the record crowds. The great weather and Austin’s largest carnival kept the Fairgrounds full until late in the evening each night.

Some of the most fun and rewarding events are the Livestock Show and Youth Auction. Over 7,800 kids from across the state of Texas participated in this year’s shows. New this year, Rodeo Austin added a Robotics Competition. It was also a record year for Competitive Events, with a record arrival number for steers. Four hundred forty-

four kids placed and went on to the Youth Auction on the last day of the Rodeo. The Youth Auction was held on the Rodeo grounds which received great feedback from all who attended. We blew past all previous Youth Auction records and set a new record of $2.3 million. Over 400,000 people came through the gates this year. You could see from the smiles on people’s faces that they were excited to be back at Rodeo Austin. The staff and volunteers did a tremendous job offering the best experience for everyone. Our 22 committees and over 700 volunteers worked tirelessly to help grow the next generation of Texas kids.

2022 was an unbelievable year surpassing all expectations. This could not have happened without the dedication of our volunteers, staff, sponsors, donors, and attendees who came out and supported us. It takes a strong commitment to making our events happen. I am truly blessed and grateful for the countless hours the Rodeo Austin family commits to and the amazing heart this group has. We believe it takes grit to grow the next generation and our group has a lot of grit. Thank you for all you do for the Rodeo Austin mission of growing the next generation of Texas kids.

$2.7 million to texas kids

Since 1938, Rodeo Austin has been a mission with a rodeo that has brought heritage and entertainment to our community while raising millions for Texas kids. Here are a few ways Rodeo Austin served the mission of growing the next generation in 2022.

YOUTH AUCTIONS |

$2,356,106

The Youth Livestock Auction awarded a record $2,302,106 and the Youth Art Auction awarded $53,950 to the top placing exhibitors for the hard work and dedication to their livestock and/or art projects.

ULTIMATE SCRAMBLE CHAMPIONSHIP | $124,000

With contributions from generous donors, Rodeo Austin helps Texas kids who are unable to purchase an animal to show in our livestock show do just that. Kids from across the state compete in a one-day tournament in which competitors must catch a calf on foot to receive a certificate to purchase their animal for the following year. Rodeo Austin hosts separate boys and girls brackets throughout the day, and winners get to participate in the final round during that night’s rodeo performance.

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS | $108,000

Rodeo Austin awarded $108,000 to fifteen incoming freshmen from across Texas in 2022. This brings Rodeo Austin total scholarship giving to $8.8 million since 1981.

INTERNSHIPS | $82,210

Rodeo Austin provided real-world experience to students across various fields of study through our paid Spring internship program. These students were in fields including marketing, animal science, graphic design, and veterinary medicine to name a few. Rodeo Austin staff recruited from schools across Texas and often garners interest from across the nation.

PREMIUMS | $30,040

Rodeo Austin awarded cash premiums of $25,040 to kids in the heifer show and $5,000 in the Agricultural Mechanics contest to the top placing exhibitors for the hard work and dedication to their projects.

Ultimate scramble championship

USC is a one-day bracket style tournament in which competitors catch calves in hopes of advancing to the next round. With the USC certificates, winners can purchase an animal of their choice: market steer, market lamb, market goat, market barrow, or breeding heifer to bring to the next year’s show.

Ultimate Scramble Championship

The Ultimate Scramble Championship (USC) was held on Saturday, March 19, 2022, with 137 participants. The USC is a unique, one of a kind scramble. Participants advance in a tournament style competition held in the Wild West tent, all vying for a spot in the USC Finals held during the ProRodeo that evening. Seven heats of girls and seven heats of boys advanced three winners to the Finals for a total of 21 girls and 21 boys competing for the overall championship. A total of $124,000 was awarded to USC participants. Participants write monthly letters to their contributors with updates on the progress of their project until they return to Rodeo Austin’s 2023 Junior Livestock Show. Without the generous donation from their contributors, many students would not get the opportunity to show livestock.

Shoot Out Sporting Clay Tournament

The event found a new home at Reunion Ranch in Georgetown, TX. Set against the backdrop of the Texas Hill Country were three unique courses, each offering different challenges. Rodeo Austin was able to offer two new games: closest to the pin and 5-man knockout. Reunion Ranch also features a reception hall that allowed for plenty of room for registration and an awards dinner.

The tournament was based on a fundraising platform with funds supporting Rodeo Austin’s mission of growing the next generation! In 2021, the Shoot Out fundraising format encouraged each participant to solicit donations and pledges based on an individual and team basis. This event raised $199,896, making it the highest grossing Shoot Out Sporting Clay Tournament in the history of the event.

Bulls in the Ballpark

During the pandemic, Rodeo Austin and Ryan Sanders Entertainment partnered together to create a brand-new event called Bulls in the Ballpark. After a successful first year, Rodeo Austin returned to Dell Diamond for a second time with Bulls in the Ballpark, presented by Lone Star Ag Credit, on November 5-6, 2021. Bulls in the Ballpark was an action-packed weekend filled with the best PRCA cowboys, contractors and stock. Over 5,000 people attended the event, which also featured Mutton Bustin’ and entertainment by Rodeo Austin’s own funny-man, Justin Rumford, each night.

The PRCA Division 1 Xtreme Bull Riding showcased 35 top bull riders each night competing for over $35,000. Bubba Grieg walked away with the title of Bulls in the Ballpark Champion. Greig scored 90.5 on Beutler & Son’s bull named Record Rack’s Coupe De Ville.

This year, the party didn’t stop after the bulls finished bucking! The Official Bulls in the Ballpark After Party, presented by Coors Banquet, took place at Maverick’s Dance Hall.

Making a difference in a gritty fun way

The Rodeo Austin family is filled with many volunteers who believe in making an impact on growing the next generation of Texas kids.

HALL OF FAME

The Rodeo Austin Hall of Fame is the most prestigious honor that can be bestowed upon an individual. This year, Rodeo Austin inducted Fred Weber into the Hall of Fame on October 26, 2021. Fred and his fellow inductees stand out as first-class leaders whose decades of service to the organization are extraordinary. Inductions to the Hall of Fame are held at the highest regard and convey a significant honor to the inductees.

TOP HAND AWARD WINNER

Steven Voelker accepted the Top Hand Award from Rodeo Austin Staff on March 22 for his continued service and leadership as a Board Member and Chairman of the Operations Committee.

LONE RANGER AWARD

Rodeo Austin awarded Jay Dolfuss the Lone Ranger award for his hard work and tenacity, blazing the trail to helping Rodeo Austin advance it’s mission to grow the next generation. Jay has worked and volunteered with Rodeo Austin last eight years and has become our resident “dirt expert.” From making sure the rodeo dirt is exactly how every barrel racer dreams of it to ensuring our 400,000 customers have a level place to park. Jay has proven time and again to be an invaluable friend and partner of Rodeo Austin.

Rodeo Austin is grateful for CBS Austin/Telemundo’s partnership during the 2021-2022 season. CBS Austin’s Walt Maciborski dazzled the crowd as the emcee for the Rodeo Austin Gala & Youth Art Auction. Telemundo’s Lorena Placencia joined the fun at Rodeo Austin during Dia Del Vaquero, engaging the crowd and helping award fan of the night. CBS Austin and Telemundo helped spread the word of Rodeo Austin’s mission and continue to help us grow the next generation.
