Welcome to summer 2021! We hope that you have all remained safe and well throughout the ‘spring break’ and we can’t wait to see you all again at some point during this coming season. Contained within these pages is our summer season in which we hope you will be able to participate, even with our current reduced capacity to enable physical distancing – though we do know that this will, in time, increase! We will announce our season in three week blocks, adding to and thus extending this brochure, when our programme is able to be confirmed. We certainly hope you enjoy our popular movie screenings for the first week and a half, seeing Jonny Labey (and guests) on stage again and the JADC’s production of Blue Remembered Hills, with a couple of Jersey Film Society screenings thrown in for good measure - and much more besides… Once again, we would like to sincerely thank our Members, audiences, volunteers and staff for their incredible and unparalleled support since March 2020 and especially since we re-opened in September – even though we closed again on 18 December. To maintain social and cultural engagement with and for our community during autumn 2020, and for 14 weeks between 9 September and 17 December, we presented: · 18 film screenings (including: the Pilot Performance) · 14 live theatre and music events · 18 performances of Gerald Durrell’s My Family and Other Animals (That’s 48 rehearsals with two casts and 150 rehearsal hours!) · 23 workshops in 14 primary schools with 590 participants · 5 major exhibitions in the Berni Gallery · The Fox Open Art Competition (188 entries by 114 Jersey Artists)

· · · · · · ·

5 exhibitions in the Bar Gallery 5 Courses + Workshops (20 sessions) 21 ACT rehearsals for Lust Actually 9 youtheatre workshops 9 Junior Drama workshops 10 Brighter Futures workshops Our AGM on 9 September

And for 15 weeks between 8 January and 23 April 2021, Jersey Arts Centre also presented 572 unique activities online with a further 1,430 communications about these experiences across our digital platforms. Total: 2,002. Incredible! Once again: many thanks for your support. Be safe and be well! And Happy New Summer!

Off The Wall / On The Wall Exhibition

JAC

Until Saturday 24 April Off The Wall began as an online community project on Monday 30 March 2020 to provide enthusiastic photographers in the Island with a weekly creative prompt, and ran in its first incarnation until Friday 11 September. During this time 665 photographs were submitted by 194 photographers! The project was revived in January 2021 as part of our on-going digital programme. Each weekday, a featured photograph was chosen which displayed the week’s theme, then a composite virtual Gallery of all submitted works was shared on a Friday to celebrate all the works that had been entered. These themes ranged from more abstract ideas such as ‘Home’, ‘Freedom’ and ‘Calm’, to more direct prompts such as ‘Coast’, ‘Wildlife’ and ‘Blue’. So whether your work is featured in the exhibition, or you would just like to enjoy some beautiful photography, do come along and support this community project – there are so many wonderful images to discover!

seventy-five years

JAC

occupation, liberation, reconciliation

Tuesday 27 April - Saturday 22 May As part of the 75th anniversary of Jersey’s liberation from occupying forces, in 2020 Jersey Arts Centre commissioned 17 Island poets to respond to our title and the ideas of occupation, liberation and reconciliation. Originally intended to be displayed on the walls of the Berni Gallery during spring 2020, Jersey Arts Centre is now delighted to exhibit these poems, having initially shared them online throughout May 2020. This unique and compelling word exhibition showcases the literary skills of some of our Island poets and storytellers in relation to the past, the present and the future. The commissioning of these poems was made possible by a grant from the Bailiff’s Chambers, the Liberation 75 working group and the Government of Jersey.

Love & Rebellion Hautlieu School

Monday 24 May - Saturday 12 June Love & Rebellion is a group exhibition featuring films, photobooks, newspaper and prints produced by A-level photography students at Hautlieu School who have explored issues around youth, gender, race, equality, climate change and experiences of the coronavirus pandemic. Part of students learning was to research global and local context of the legacies of colonialism and racism, as well as protests and activism in art and politics. Collectively, examples of work will be presented as a newspaper distributed Islandwide by the Jersey Evening Post and also be exhibited as part of a pop-up display.

On The Wild Side Kathy Rondel & Michele Snape

Monday 14 June - Saturday 3 July Welcome to our exhibition which has been prompted by our shared love of colour. Our styles, although very different, we think are complementary. We both spend many hours walking our beautiful Island observing and loving the flora and fauna. Gardens too are a major part of our lives and as for so many people this last year we have spent even more time than usual with spade and fork. This is clearly reflected in our artwork! We hope you delight in sumptuous colour and, even if only momentarily, feel uplifted sharing our love of nature.

Ramparts Collective Ramparts Jersey

Monday 5 July - Saturday 24 July The exhibition explores self-expression, imagination, and true-self. Each artist has taken a personal vision and through self-awareness put it into an external form. John Lewis uses drawing as a powerful form of mental health therapy, having struggled with depression for much of his life. Carlo Zen is a self-confessed dreamer, often portraying the serene and calmness of Jersey’s landscapes, camera in hand he captures the still. Melissa Rodrigues celebrates feminine strength in her work and feels that when women join together there is a support network of comfort, her magical images define this mystery. You’ll be drawn into the playful aesthetic behind Jacques Le Breton’s work, each piece pulling you into his mind’s eye, he beckons ‘speak friend and enter’. The selection of work features mixed media, photography, and acrylic on canvas, of varying scale and size. We hope you are captured by its inspiring theme and celebrate your own self-expression creatively.

Bright Young Things Hightlands College, School of Art

Monday 26 July - Saturday 18 September Bright Young Things is a showcase of some of the best artwork produced by this year’s UAL students. Despite the challenges presented by a very difficult year, all of the students have responded well and produced work to a very high standard. On display is work from some of the L3 year 1, L3 year 2 and Foundation Diploma students. During their final major project, all students have been encouraged to explore a theme of their choice. Environmental, mental health, feminism, economics and even laundry have formed the starting points for the work on display. The students have responded to the themes by exploring diverse materials and techniques to communicate their ideas. This year’s summer show at the School of Art proved to be one of the most successful yet for the department. We had many visitors to the show who gave glowing feedback on the work displayed. Unfortunately, not all of the work is on display here, but it is hoped that anyone viewing the show gains a greater understanding of the work produced by the School of Art and the hard work and variety of disciplines and concepts the students are able to interrogate. The Bright Young Things will now be moving on to the next step of their artistic career. Be it studying womenswear at the Royal College Fashion, Illustration at AUB or coming on to the next level of study at Highlands College.
