Jambo Rafikis, Habari? Introducing you to some Swahili we learned while travelling in Africa…Hello Friends. How are you? The last holiday period was particularly exciting for some in our community. Thirty fortunate, adventurous and brave hearted students, parents and staff under the watchful eyes of Mr Nigel McDuff (third time expedition leader) toured Tanzania, Africa, and climbed Mount Kilimanjaro as part of our Global Expedition-Personal Challenge climbing Mt Kilimanjaro. I know that we have all gained substantially from this experience. While chatting about what the students had gained from the trip, I was reminded of a conversation I had with a stranger in transit. I admit I was a little surprised by the way the conversation went.

Outwardly, all enjoyed the multiple facets and demonstrated stamina in dealing with the challenges of the mountain. To quote Mr Craig Lawless, also a third time expeditionary: “The mountain changes you” and I am confident that the real benefit lies in the clarification of our values and inner thought processes as we step out of our comfort zone. It is easy to develop parochial thinking. It is easy to have a nation and individuals fearful of the wider world and justify all by an exaggerated nationalism. It is much harder to develop people who are open to other cultures and wise about historic experience. Getting out, meeting people, being part of another place and comparing the home ground with the place visited is not fool proof in developing thoughtful and humane citizens, but it is a great start and it has a remarkable record of success.

We all gain from being connected to an outward looking community. Our trip undoubtedly had a transforming influence on all of us and reflections on our myriad of experiences are poignant. Many He was observing how ‘many young people today students expressed to me similar sentiments: “This travel while at school and often as part of gap year trip has changed me, from the way I see the world experiences in the time after leaving school’. He to what I want to do with my life. It gave me a new was critical of this, suggesting that it was a waste of perception of the world and an appreciation of time and they should be in the workforce or what I have. I’ve been moved to tears so many reflecting on the value of money a lot more’. times at the bonds formed over our trip. I will be holding all the memories close to my heart.” He was seriously concerned about the notion of travel for the young and that it was a waste of We are so blessed living in Mackay, and it is vital money. I could not agree with him. Yes - it is that we are aware of just how fortunate we are to expensive to travel. However, the benefits of travel live in Australia, and we remain inspired to reach are, in my opinion, huge and lifelong. out to others through our Global Service Learning Expeditions like this one to Mt Kilimanjaro. The Mt Kilimanjaro climbers explored and were exposed to the geo-political and cultural differences We are as a School indebted to Mr Nigel McDuff for between our countries. We met experts in the his superb stewardship of this ambitious expedition richness of that history and we felt something of and indeed to all the staff, the parents and the the culture of modern day Tanzania. Clearly, there students themselves for being such fine was plenty of return in the exchange for the cost of ambassadors for our School. I also want to being part of this travel experience. acknowledge the commitment and dedication of

our guides and porters who genuinely wanted to assist us in realising our goal to get to the roof of Africa. This last week also saw the 13th Whitsunday Voices Youth Literature Festival. It is always a time of the year which is filled with great anticipation and excitement. We have a team of volunteers that share this passion. We thank all those members of the school and local community who have assisted over the 13 years. It is impossible to name them all, but our gratitude extends far and wide. Special recognition and thanks goes to the organising committee that shoulders the mammoth task of making the festival a reality. The members are Ms Jenny Grant, Ms Sam Bennington, Mrs Yvette Iturbe, Ms Kylie Porter, Mrs Sue Hamilton-Smith, Mrs Mandy Lawless and Mrs Juliene Benson. However, we have one special person who has led this team of extraordinary people and she has made this seem effortless. Festival Manager Ms Sonia Andersen’s calm professional manner in dealing with the complexities of a humongous event makes her an extraordinary person. She is incredible. Anything is possible if we have passion, motivation and perseverance. The personal anecdotes shared by the authors give us a sense that “they are just like me” or “I can do that”. It speaks to us loudly and clearly, giving us voice, whoever we are. Whitsunday Voices Youth Literary Festival is an opportunity to be part of creativity at its best, so we can bask in the love of literature and the abstract journeys of discovery which reading and writing can take us on. To finish with some fun Swahili… Kichizi kama ndizi (we are crazy cool like a banana).

Looking at the calendar there are many amazing activities still to come. PRAYER AND REFLECTION How busy is our family, school, work, social and recreational life? How important to intentionally find regular opportunities to stop, relax and refresh so we have the energy and the focus to continue the journey and appreciate the opportunities. At mid-term conference of GFS-KIDSPLUS, the Venerable Revd. Michael Hillier was a guest speaker. He introduced us to the Bush Spirituality series of meditations that he has created for the tourists that visit his Parish church in Burra, SA. section of http:// www.bushspirituality.org.au/ after all we are all tourists in this world. KIDSPLUS The Kidsplus group will recommence in Term 3 on Wednesday July 27. Mrs Sarah Wright I welcome all Senior School staff and students back to school for Semester Two. Semester One was busy yet greatly rewarding for us all with so many undertakings and achievements. At the beginning of a new semester, I again encourage open communication between parents or guardians, students and our Senior School staff. We are all working towards achieving the very best outcomes for our students to prepare them for life beyond school. Parents or guardians, please do not hesitate to make contact with any member of the Senior School staff if you have questions or concerns. If you are unsure how to make contact, the Senior School Secretary, Mrs Margie Haines, can assist you. She can be contacted by phone (4969 2032) or email mha@was.qld.edu.au Interhouse Choir Well done to all Senior School staff and students on the Interhouse Choir competition on the final day of Term Two. This event is a culmination of tireless work of Heads of House, Tutors, House staff and students which was enjoyed by all. Congratulations to Charles House for winning the Senior School competition. Whitsunday Voices The Senior School students are all commended for their exemplary efforts during the Festival. We are fortunate that we can rely on our students acting as excellent ambassadors for our School. In particular, the Author Support students and volunteers in a variety of areas helped ensure that Whitsunday Voices was, once again, a resounding success. The student helpers were always willing to take care of any job and the visiting authors were full of praise for our students. I particularly congratulate Tim Borg who was named as ‘Winner’ of the 2016

‘Brendan Brieffies’ Award for Whitsunday Voices Youth Literature Festival Student Volunteer of the Year. Maggie Formosa was named as ‘Runner Up’. Both Tim and Maggie were dedicated in their tireless work with the Winchester staff and students, and instrumental in taking care of setup and relocation due to rain. We can certainly look forward to another great event in 2017.

Senior School Subject Selection Evening The Senior School Subject Selection Evening will be held in the Pansy Wood Centre on Monday 1 August. The session for students and parents of Year 8 into Year 9 in 2017 will commence at 6:00pm. The session for students and parents of Year 10 into Year 11 in 2017 will start at 6:30pm. If parents/guardians and students are not able to attend, the students will be given the Subject lines form the next day. These forms should be returned as soon as possible after the evening. If you wish to receive a copy of the PowerPoint presentation shown on the night, please email Mrs Margie Haines on mha@was.qld.edu.au Year 10 SET Plan Interviews The Year 10 SET Plan interviews for all Year 10 students and their parents/guardians will be held on Friday 12 August in the Tindall Centre from 8:30am to 5:00pm. Year 12 QTAC Applications QTAC applications open on 2 August and are due by 30 September. It is advisable that Year 12 parents talk to their son or daughter about their university preferences in the coming weeks. Year 12 students who are interested in applying for an apprenticeship or a traineeship should by now be looking for opportunities which are currently rare in Mackay. If students are considering a gap year, overseas opportunities need to be explored now as well. All up-to-date information about QTAC, universities, residential colleges, and gap year opportunities can be sourced through the Senior School office and some of this information can be found in our new ‘Careers Corner’ in the Mienert Centre. Years 11 and 12 students are able to access this collection of information throughout the school day. Leadership 2017 Year 11 students are encouraged to consider applying for a Student Leadership Office Bearer position for 2017. Applications open today (Friday 22 July) and are due by Friday 5 August. Students in the spotlight! I commend three of our Year 12 students, Laine Campbell, Maggie Monckton and Olivia Jones, on their Gap Medics placements in Poland and Tanzania during the mid-year break. The Senior School students will hear of their experiences at our next Assembly. This week it was announced that three of our Year 11 students, Saad Ashraf, Nicholas McLaughlan and Ruturaj Vaidya, have been selected to take part in the QUT ViceChancellor’s STEM Camp in September. These students have been chosen due to their outstanding academic achievement and passion in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Mr Mick Martin Welcome Back to Term Three Welcome back from a terrific break, and welcome to our new families to the Junior School. I would also like to welcome Ms. Tayhla Wood who will be taking on the coordination of the School’s OSHC while Mrs Cheree Pigott is on a teaching practicum. We also welcome back Mr Adam Shield from his endeavour to conquer Mount Kilimanjaro; it was a true test of Mr Shield’s endurance, confidence, persistence and resilience. The busy weeks ahead promise to provide the students with challenges to develop and enhance their self-regulation skills, persistence, confidence, organization, getting along skills and resilience. We will be working towards National Science Week, International Day, Outdoor Education/Activities Week and Eisteddfod rehearsals with some time for class work and play. The Junior School Fridge Facts outlines a wonderful Term Three for us all: and if last week (Voices Literary Festival & House Athletics) is any indication of what lies ahead, then hang on! Outstanding Efforts by Junior School Students Well done to budding author Noah Binney, Year 4J who was awarded second place in the Voices Writing competition for Mackay Schools Year 3 and Year 4 students; a wonderful effort. Congratulations to these students for their efforts at the recent Mackay & District Show Art competition: Aidan Wright (4S): Highly Commended, Harriet Notley (3L): Highly Commended, Adelaide Wright (2M): Highly Commended. A number of Junior School students were members of the cast in Triple Threat Academy’s production of ‘Into the Woods Jnr.’ during the recent school holidays. Samuel Ranson and Mariselle Botha, both in Year 4S, committed themselves to an exhausting, but rewarding production. Samuel, it

would appear is an old hand at the performing business having appeared in other local productions and eisteddfods while this was Mariselle’s first major production. Other Whitsunday Anglican students (and staff) also performed in what was a tremendous success. Samuel Ranson also experienced life as a thespian attending a 3 day Shakespeare Residency at the MECC last week. Read Samuel’s recount……… Junior School House Athletics Congratulations also to Barnabas House students as the Champion House in this year’s Junior School House Athletics. Read student recounts of the House Athletics……… Whitsunday Voices Youth Literature Festival Throughout the end of last week Junior School students were attending presentations and performances adding to the ‘festival’ feel of such a wonderful event. The recounts from some of the students demonstrate how much a festival such as ours touches individual students and leaves an impression. Congratulations to Noah Binney, Year 4J for his terrific effort in the Whitsunday Voices Youth Literature Festival Short Story Competition.

Noah’s entry, ‘My Brother’ was well written and subsequently awarded second place for Years 3-4. Read student recounts………. Junior Schools’ Day of Excellence Amidst the excitement of the first day of the Whitsunday Voices Youth Literature Festival the Junior School hosted students from Whitsunday Christian College at our ‘authorship’ Day of Excellence. Throughout the year we look to hold 2 Days of Excellence involving Year 3 and Year 4 students from the 4 Independent Schools in the District. Last week’s session was facilitated by wellknown children’s author and illustrator George Ivanoff. George led the students through the creation of a character from which they could develop a story. It was a wonderful experience for our budding authors and fully complements the theme of this week at the Whitsunday Anglican School. The undertakings of last week are part of our ongoing series of ‘Days of Excellence’ across the curriculum enhancing the experiences for our Year Three and Year Four students. The ‘writing’ session was facilitated by Mr Adam Shield, supported by Mr Mick Martin with many thanks to Ms Sonia Andersen for her efforts in securing George Ivanoff to work with the students. In all, our ‘Day of Excellence’ session engaged the students and continued the Junior School’s ambition to work with students and staff from the other Independent schools in our region. Read student recounts………… Self-regulation – what is it? Self-regulation is a pleasing part of a child’s development where, as they grow so does their ability to stop themselves from doing something they want to do and perform tasks that they do not like doing, even when parents and staff are not around. Mr Matt Hodge It is a busy time for both our Service Learning Program and Global Learning Programs. Mt Kilimanjaro Global Expedition Congratulations to the 30 participants in our Mount Kilimanjaro Global Expedition. If you were following the Facebook page, you would have seen the many highlights from their adventure. I am positive that the memories that they made will last forever. A huge thank you to Mr Nigel McDuff for coordinating the expedition. The next Mount Kilimanjaro Global Expedition will run in June/July 2018. Global Exchange Students Since the start of term we have welcomed 9 new exchange students from around the world. The students have come from Japan, France, Canada, USA and Spain. We hope that they thoroughly enjoy their time in Mackay. Last week Paris Di-Filippo and Kimberlee Baldacchino departed for their exchange to St. Mary’s Diocesan School for Girls in South Africa. Their entries into our travel blog will be shared when they have been posted.

Homestay Families Thank you to the families that have offered to host students from Yantai in China. These students will visit our school next week and we look forward to welcoming them into our community.
