2 The Whitsunday Word

From the Principal - Mrs Maria McIvor

It has been a fantastic start to the year. I really have enjoyed sharing lunch with our new students and getting to know them a little better. The egg and lettuce sandwiches were a hit! Quizzing the students about our School landmarks and for them to see the photos of the people they were named after also helped in making meaningful connections. I am convinced the ‘feel of a school’ can make an enormous difference to all (especially the boys and girls) so School culture is something we watch closely and look for ways to measure. This leads me to share with you a book I have recently read, as I did with all staff at our first staff meeting, ‘The Geography of Genius’, by Eric Weiner.

something which is important to us as a School. So as a staff we have examined ‘What is our WAS Culture?’ •Culture defines us, makes us unique •Culture sometimes has practices that are instilled and aren’t necessarily written down- it’s the way things are done around the place. •In explaining Culture, people often say it is the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves. We retell those stories because the narrative matters so we can’t lose one’s culture •Culture can be courageous and it takes community •Culture can’t be changed by one person, culture can only change or be reinforced by the men, women and students who make up our organisation.

Weiner sets out to examine the connection between our surroundings and our most innovative ideas. He asks why “genius clusters” have formed in certain places at various times in history. Seeking an answer, he went to those places: Athens, Hangzhou, Florence, Edinburgh, Calcutta, Vienna and Silicon Valley. He discussed why geniuses become marginalized members of society; how drinking establishments, clubs and coffeehouses foster creativity clusters; and why many geniuses were prolific in several fields. Weiner explored the nature of genius as well as the environments that foster its development. He was also an advocate of the ‘nurture’ in the nature vs nurture debate.

When we lead in School, we have Custodianship of the School’s culture: our name, reputation, ethos, ethical foundations, our core values. If we don’t have a culture that is giving people the confidence to contribute at a personal level, fostering creativity and through that, reach their potential, then the organisation is not going to reach its potential either. The focus at Whitsunday Anglican School is clear and precise but all of us should be aware of and understand the important part we have in the meta-narrative, Learning through Love, Living by Faith, Leading with Service thus providing an engaging and supportive learning experience that achieves the best outcome for our students.

In these places, Weiner asked, “What was in the air, and can we bottle it?” Although Africa and Australia were left out of the author’s travels, we did get a mention. Notwithstanding, Weiner also noted that there are few women recognised as geniuses because of the social constraints preventing women from pursuing the work necessary to gain that recognition.

Old Scholar Achievment Marryum Kahloon, our 2010 School Captain, has just been awarded the prestigious Fulbright Postgraduate Scholarship. She will study a Master of Laws at Columbia University focussing on public international law and international refugee law. Congratulations, Marryum!

Weiner’s book redefined the argument about how ‘genius’ has strong correlation to the importance of culture in nurturing creativity. This is

Marryum graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (First Class Honours) and Bachelor of International Relations (Business) from Bond University. Throughout her undergraduate degree, Marryum was actively involved in student life serving as President of the Law Students’ Association

The Whitsunday Word

and as a councillor on the Student Philanthropy Council. She also helped establish the Bond Law Clinic, a pro bono legal service. Marryum was the Australian representative at the 2015 G(irls)20 Summit in Istanbul. She has also previously served as a UNICEF Young Ambassador. Since graduating Marryum has worked as Associate to President Margaret McMurdo AC in the Court of Appeal, Supreme Court of Queensland. She has also worked as a volunteer at the Salvos Legal Asylum Seeker Clinic, assisting asylum seekers with their visa applications. Last week our School community joined together to commission our 2017 Year 12 students. It was lovely to witness our Year 12 students being presented with their senior ties by our brave Preparatory students. A number of Year 1 students and Year 12 siblings also participated in this wonderful ceremony. This is always a moving and significant occasion for the older students in their final year; particularly the number of Year 12 students who started their own WAS journey in Prep or kindergarten here at the school. Events such as these help define the culture of our School, and they provide us with an opportunity to celebrate everything this is truly wonderful about Whitsunday. I must also say that at the recent Principal’s Welcome function the students were positive and focussed (and impressing staff everywhere). At the function we highlighted strengthening relationships and culture. Our theme this year is ‘Celebrating Community.’ •celebrating our boarding families. •celebrating our international families, •celebrating our new and current families, •celebrating our students •celebrating our staff •celebrating our WAS Board, and Support Groups, Old Scholars (special mention and thanks to Cayley and Sarah Weekes who travelled from Bowen), the P&F and Foundation. I am proud to say that celebrating is something we rather enjoy doing at WAS and the students and staff are coming up with lots of ideas about how we can make this theme come alive this year. During the night we had a variety of entertainment which showcased our talented community. It is easy to feel affirmed and positive when surrounded by so many who are focussed on the positive and keen to extend the boundary of what we can achieve.

From the Chaplain - Reverend Janet Story COMMISSIONING OF STUDENTS Congratulations to our Class of 2017 Student Leadership Team and Office Bearers who were commissioned on Friday 24 February. Thank you to all who created this memorable occasion especially The Venerable Christopher Wright, Archdeacon of North Queensland who travelled from Kuranda; the Preparatory, Year One, siblings and friends who presented the Year 12 ties and badges; Mrs Mann and the musicians; Mr Deeley and technical staff; and, the School Captains, Vice Captains and Chapel Captains. A notable family moment occurred when the WAS School tie of Foundation Student Jenny Mulhall (nee Griffin) Class of 1992 was presented by Jhett Mulhall 2M to Tom Parrish 12T. WORLD DAY OF PRAYER Thank you to the Middle School students who will represent our community at the World Day of Prayer service on Friday 03 March at St Paul’s Lutheran Church cnr Alfred and Wellington Streets. The evening service will be held at 7.30pm at the Salvation Army Citadel in Gregory Street. ASH WEDNESDAY This year, Ash Wednesday is 01 March. Jesus said: Be careful when you are trying to be good so that you don’t make a performance out of it. It might be good theatre, but God who made you won’t be applauding. It may turn you into a small time celebrity but it won’t make you a saint (Matthew 6) In the Old Testament, people and nations who had sinned showed they were sorry by dressing in sackcloth and ashes (Jonah Chapter 3) The prickly material symbolises the scratchiness and the ash & dust symbolise the ugliness caused by our unkind and thoughtless actions. In the early days of the Christian Church, sinners had to seek forgiveness by sitting in the market place while wearing sackcloth sprinkled with ashes. It has become customary for Christians to receive ashes on their forehead during the Service on Ash Wednesday. The ashes are the result of burning the palm crosses left from the joyful celebration of Palm Sunday last year. On the following Friday the people screamed: Crucify him! After bushfires, new plants grow with the goodness of the ashes. Communities grow with the love and support of those around. With both, the scars remain as a reminder of the harsh times. In the season of Lent, we take the opportunity to grow aware of the new life that follows positive change in our lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle allows us to review and renew physically, emotionally and spiritually. EASTER In our school Easter services on Friday 31 March, we take the opportunity to walk the journey from the joyful welcome in Palm Sunday; the command to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and mind and soul and strength and to love and care for your neighbour as you love and care for yourself” as Jesus washed the disciples feet on Maundy Thursday; the Last Supper and Jesus invitation to “as often

as you eat – remember Jesus’ love”; the crucifixion and death of Jesus on that first Good Friday; the caring friends who gently and respectfully placed Jesus’ broken body in the tomb; the early morning, empty tomb and amazing celebration that Jesus is alive. Jesus rose from the grave. This journey reminds us that we are invited to accept the ‘new life’ that leads to eternal life. From the second letter of Paul to Timothy Chapter 1 verse10: “It has now been revealed through the appearing of our Saviour, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the Gospel.” The disciples at first doubted. When the risen Jesus suddenly appeared in their midst, they took him for a ghost. Jesus showed the disciples his hands and his feet and invited them to touch and see for themselves. This text stresses the reality of the resurrection. John 3:16 reminds us: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. What a wonderful gift from God. Let us pray: Jesus, brightness of God’s glory, whom death could not conquer nor the tomb imprison: as you have shared our frailty in human flesh, help us to share your immortality in the Spirit; let no shadow of the grave terrify us, and no fear of darkness turn our hearts from you. Reveal yourself to us this day and all our days, as the First and the Last, the Living One, our immortal Saviour and Lord. Amen. Read about the Journey to Easter in the Bible - Matthew Chapters 21 to 28 and the final chapters of Mark, Luke and John. RATS OF TOBRUK The Rats of Tobruk Service will be held at 9.30 am on Wednesday 19 April at the Memorial in Queen’s Park, Goldsmith Street. The Chapel Captains, representatives from the Middle School Character Counts Council, Year 4 students and Staff will be attending. The Siege of Tobruk (in present day Libya) marked the first turning point of World War II. Being described by the enemy as “Rats living in holes” these typical Aussie Diggers proudly called themselves “the RATS OF TOBRUK”. ANZAC The School commemoration of ANZAC will be held on Friday 21 April at 9.30am in Ron Bourne Hall. Everyone is welcome to come, pause a while and give thanks for the freedoms we have in Australia. Enquiries are welcome for Pastoral services including Baptisms, Confirmation, Weddings and Memorial services. KIDSPLUS – the children’s group meets from 3.15 – 4.30pm on Wednesday at J11 for afternoon tea, games, stories and activities that encourage us in our Christian faith. Term One concludes on 15 March and Term Two will commence on 03 May. May God continue to bless your journey with helpful families and hopefilled friends.

From the Head of Senior School - Mrs Sarah Wright Term 1 is progressing very quickly and I commend both Senior School staff and students on a smooth start to the year. With a full Calendar and busy academic programs, it is no wonder that the weeks are passing very quickly. I wish our students and staff well for the coming final four weeks before we see the end of the first term of the year. Year 11 Biology Heron Island Field Study Forty-one Year 11 students recently undertook a Biology Field Study on Heron Island from Saturday 18 to Wednesday 22 February. This study is a compulsory part of their Biology study. The trip was well timed as the students were able to observe the hatching of baby sea turtles and see a great deal of sea life. Thank you to Mr Michael McKenna for his organisation of the trip which enabled these students to have such a wonderful experience. Thank you also to the other accompanying teachers, Mrs Teresa Hackney, Mr Bruce Keys and Miss Rebecca Matijevic. Lions Voice of Youth Competition Well done and congratulations to Dayna Bushell, Siliba Ncomanzi, Jake Magro and Saad Ashraf who participated in the Lions Voice of Youth Competition recently. Following an interview process and a public speaking event, Siliba was announced as the public speaking winner and Saad the overall winner who will proceed to the next regional level of the competition. This is a very challenging and competitive competition so these students have done particularly well. Generation Next Student Wellbeing and Leadership Program Our students in Years 10, 11 and 12 have been invited to participate in this program which aims to empower our students to become leaders and advocates for wellbeing within their peer groups, families, school and wider community. On Friday 10 March these cohorts will engage in one-and-a-half hour sessions which are livestreamed from Bond University with world-renouned keynote speakers presenting, and students able to participate in polling. The session topics

include: Online Rights and Responsibilities (Year 10), What’s happening to my brain? (Year 11) and Stress Management: Coping with School and Study Stress (Year 12), and Understanding & Managing Anger, Aggression and Challenging Emotions (Year 12). Year 12 Mocktail As due reward for our Year 12 students undertaking their Term 1 assessment tasks in the coming weeks, next Friday 10 March they will enjoy the annual Year 12 Mocktail event at Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre. Many thanks to the Mocktail Committee members who have assisted Mrs Dee Hayhoe with preparations for the evening. Defence Forces Recruitment Representatives from the Australian Defence Force will be visiting the Senior School next Wednesday 8 March to speak to students who may be interested in vocational pathways in the Defence Forces. Information about these opportunities is always available in the Senior School Careers Corner in the Mienert Centre. Communication Senior School students are encouraged to ensure that they check their student email accounts regularly for important reminders and other information. A great deal of information about scholarship and other opportunities is also regularly emailed to students, particularly those in Year 12. Students in the Spotlight! Congratulations to Dayna Bushell who has been successful in gaining a place to attend the SPARQ-ed Research Immersion at the University of Queensland in June. From the Head of Middle School - Ms Karen Owens Pillar of the fortnight: Fairness This fortnight our focus has been on the orange pillar of Fairness. Our message to students has reflected the following key points: Play by the rules • Take turns and share • Be open-minded; listen to others • Don’t take advantage of others • Don’t blame others carelessly • Treat all people fairly Leadership Assembly Our leaders were inducted into their roles at our last assembly and meetings commence this week during Pastoral Access for all leaders and committee group members. This is an opportunity for students to have a voice and help shape the many ideas and new initiatives that are starting to emerge. All students have been emailed the meeting schedule over the two week cycle. Character and Leadership for Learning Our first whole Middle School fundraising activity will be Harmony Day held on Friday 17th March. Year levels will meet in their Tutor Groups and coordinate food to be brought along for their stall. Students can purchase a plate for $5.00 and sample foods from the different stalls. Skills and themes that teachers will discuss and have as a focus through this venture include: personal and group organisation, team work and fair share, community connectedness, tolerance and understanding and respect. Year 5: Australia Year 6: China Year 7 Mexico Year 8 USA/Canada

Dress up is optional. Students may bring traditional food and dress up in their own cultural dress if they wish. Information was sent via Daily Correspondence this week for this special Middle School event. Parents are welcome to assist and attend. Interim Reports All new students to Whitsunday have had interim reports sent home earlier this week to provide information to parents on their child’s progress and their settling in to new routines and expectations. I encourage parents to communicate with their child’s teacher or Tutor Group teacher as warranted. Middle School Bush dance An invitation is extended to all Middle School families to join us at the Bush dance being held in the Ron Bourne Hall on Friday 24th March from 6.00pm-8.00pm. Students in Year 5 and 7 will learn dances as part of their Physical Education lessons and the band “Hullabaloo” will call the dances and perform. It is a family fun evening and a wonderful opportunity for students, parents and teachers to enjoy HATS arrangements Some parents have been emailed regarding their child’s non attendance at a HATS session that their child was enrolled in but did not attend. This is purely to ensure that your child/children are accounted for if their absence has not been confirmed prior to the HATS session. Students are welcome to attend HATS on an as needs basis and will be signed in and out as per normal. With the change in some co-curricular activities, if your child is no longer attending a nominated HATS session or has

The Whitsunday Word a planned absence please advise through the Middle School office to avoid an email notifying you of their absence. All students who attend a HATS session have this noted in their diary by the supervising teacher. Chapel this week This week in Chapel Reverend Janet led a short presentation to explain and celebrate Ash Wednesday. Many students had active roles in the presentation which also focussed on the theme of forgiveness. A group of Middle School students represented Whitsunday Anglican School at the 2017 Interdenominational World Day of Prayer Service. The Prayer Service was held today at the Mackay Community Lutheran Church in Wellington Street. Students played a small role in the service. . Camp Deposits Invitations have been sent to families to secure camp deposits for Outdoor Education week.11-15 September. Parents can log into Parent Lounge to accept and pay these deposits. Information about camps can be found on the school website and the letter attached to the deposit invitation. Relay for Life

Students who have not yet signed up for this significant community event may do so by contacting Mrs Christine Grobler. cgrobler@was. qld.edu.au Students will not be able to register as part of the Middle School team after March 31st, last day of this term. Students from Year 5-8 may register and we look forward to parent involvement and support on this evening to assist coordinate our teams. House Spirit Day It was terrific to see so many students engage with the House themes and celebrate all that is good about our House system : Team work, comradery, friendly rivalry and pride: in self, their team and school. These are some of the special occasions which form life-long memories with friends having fun. Our House choir practice will commence on March 17 in Pastoral Access and all students will be involved in their House groups. We look forward to the Year 11’s leading our students through their performances.

From the Head of Junior School - Mr Mick Martin Whole School Gatherings – a sense of occasion These past 6 weeks has seen the Junior School involved in a number of whole school gatherings. It is wonderful to see our youngest students recognise the ‘sense of occasion’ at these events: 60 minutes is a long time for a 5 year old to ‘maintain the rage’ but the Junior School students have done themselves, their families and teachers proud throughout these proceedings. Last week saw us attend our second whole school celebration for the traditional ‘tie giving’ ceremony. A quarter of the 2017 journey – Term 1 This term thus far has been one of new challenges for many students and families, and marvellous support and encouragement from staff and families to our students. I am always appreciative of the hours that parents put into the Junior School specifically and the School generally. The community spirit within the Junior School is tremendous and it is our parents, families, students and staff who continue to enhance this spirit through volunteering your time in classrooms, on excursions, and welcoming new families to the Junior School. The final weeks of term includes our Kindergarten to Year Four students ‘Having-A-Go’ in the House Cross Country and, leading to Easter, the School Easter Service and Preparatory Year Easter Hat parade in the final week. We will also see Year 4S boys sharing pizza and chatting with Zac Chrzanowski, Junior School Captain, about ‘leadership’. Our first 2017 Junior Schools’ STEM Day of Excellence will be held in Week 8. The investigations are based on Science, Technology, Engineering,

and Mathematics (STEM). We have invited Year 3 & 4 students from the other Independent schools in our region to attend – Whitsunday Christian College, Mackay Christian College, Carlisle Christian College. Adam Shield and I will facilitate the activities with the students. The first week back next term sees the Year 4 cohort representing the School at the Rats of Tobruk Service held in Queen’s Park on Wednesday 19 April, and the students in Preparatory Year to Year 4 taking a hands-on approach to Mathematics in the Fun With Maths program. In advance of the upcoming break, enjoy time with your family and have a Holy Easter; we will see you at the start of Term Two, Tuesday 18 April. For those families leaving us we wish you all the very best. Transition to school and anxiety: the role parents play Continuing the theme from my article in the previous Word, where in the transition into or back to school can lead to anxiety in some of our students, all young children, at some time, may experience upsetting emotions and anxiety; particularly when making the transition from home to school, or school to school or holidays back to school. How we respond as parents and educators is vital to how they cope. For parents it is your role to acknowledge that a child’s anxiety is appropriate and their feelings are real. It’s up to parents and educators to provide encouragement, support and help to learn life-long coping strategies. In the Junior School this is done through our You Can do It! Pastoral

The Whitsunday Word

framework. The explicit teaching of the foundations – Organisation, Getting Along, Confidence, Persistence – all lead to a strengthening Emotional Resilience which in turn supports our students in times of anxiety. I have shared an article written by Dr Michael Bernard in which he outlines research on parenting practices that may impact on how children respond to anxiety. Read more………….. A Safe Environment Throughout the term, teachers and students have been discussing ways to remain ‘safe’ at school and in the community. To support these messages, we recognise the National Day of Action: Bullying No Way! and will follow that with a performance of ‘Too Cool for Bullies’ in March. For our Year Three students, a combined production with the QPS and CQ University titled ‘Safety Circus’ was held last week. As previously mentioned, it is a case of ‘same message, different voice’ when discussing strategies to keep safe and support others. Safety Circus – Archie Townsend Year 3L I went to watch the Safety Circus with my class. During the circus there was a clown who fell off his scooter – we learnt that we need to wear a helmet and elbow pads when we are out riding. There was a clown being bullied – we learnt that you don’t bully others or you could get bullied back. When the girl got butterflies in her stomach, because she

was upset or sad, her belly glowed! We learnt about safety and we learnt the Safety Song. You put your helmet on You clip your helmet up You put your safety pads on Then you’re ready to go out You do the skateboard safety and the bikes and scooters too And that’s what it’s all about! Read more student recounts……………………….. You Can Do It! (YCDI!) The Habits of Mind – Mr. Adam Shield, Assistant Head of Junior School In our YCDI! program we focus on teaching behaviours and skills to help achieve the five foundations that assist students in becoming more resilient, cooperative and caring students. We pay particular attention to 12 Positive Habits of Mind that support our students to achieve these foundations. These learned behaviours can be encouraged and practiced at home, as we do in the classroom, and we encourage all our Junior School families to engage with these with their children. From the Head of Boarding - Mr Bruce H Keys Mr Jon Grant—Deputy Head of Boarding It is with great sadness that I announce to our Boarding Community the retirement of Mr Jon Grant as the Deputy Head of Boarding, as at the end of term 1. Jon has made this conscious decision due to personal health reasons. We have been most fortunate to have shared the experience of such a committed and dedicated man who has always placed the safety and wellbeing of our boarders at the forefront. Jon will continue to be heavily involved with our Boarders Band and remain teaching in the Senior School. We will have an opportunity towards the end of the term to formally thank and farewell Jon and Jenny. Mr Alex Barker has accepted the position of Acting Head of Boarding until the end of the year. We look forward to the continued support and professional approach that the Barker family has to offer to our Booth House Community. School Assessment Tasks & Exam Week All students should now be fully aware of their required assessment tasks for each subject for the term. To assist individual students this has been placed on their “Student Café” for ongoing reference. We are continually reminding our boarders that that need to communicate with their respective teaching staff if they are requiring further assistance or not understanding these requirements. I would ask parents to be speaking with your children to ensure that they are on task with time frames and working during their time at home. Western Visits—Greet and Meet My appreciation to the many families who were involved over the past couple of weeks during my Clermont and Moranbah visits. The Western Trips have given the School a clear indication of the many families, as far as Clermont, who have genuine interest with their children’s future enrolment and Boarding at Whitsunday Anglican School. Boarders Transport and Leave Requests Following a review of the transport arrangements for our boarders I am pleased to inform families that this service will remain a priority to assist our boarders with co-curricular training & fixtures, medical & dental appointments along with airport trips, tutoring etc.. I would ask and remind parents to make any required appointments outside school hours and to ensure we have a minimum of 24 hours notice to fully accommodate and arrange these requests. Northern Visit—Greet & Meet On Friday 10th March I will be travelling with Paula to spend time in Cannon Vale (shopping Centre) and Bowen (Sunday markets). I extend an invitation to all our northern families to make personal contact if you would like to catch up or have families interested in future boarding at WAS Personal Invitation Again I would like to extend an invitation to all members of our WAS Boarding Community to make direct contact with me if you have any concerns or issues relating to your daughters/sons’ experience in boarding. As Head of Boarding I believe my major responsibility to be the accountability, safety and most importantly the happiness of your children, while they are under our care and responsibility.

Service Learning Day A huge thank you to our School community for your support of our first Service Learning Day. We will be donating $946 to the Anglican Board of Mission Australia to support their WASH program in Vanuatu. The project aims to provide better water, hygiene and sanitation facilities to rural areas in Vanuatu, who have been affected by recent natural disasters. Our Service Learning Day in Term 2 will be in support of our service projects in Laos and Vietnam. Profile – Anglican Board of Mission ABM is the national mission agency of the Anglican Church of Australia working with overseas and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities. We have a holistic view of God’s mission. We work with Anglican Church partners and others to see lives empowered and transformed spiritually, materially and socially. We help the Anglican Church and the wider community realise and respond to the invitation for all to be a part of God’s hope for the world. Whitsunday Anglican School has support ABMA with their previous projects in Vanuatu, Solomon Islands and the Philippines. Interact Valentine’s Day Congratulation’s also needs to be extended to our Interact Club for their Valentine’s Day Fundraiser. The club has decided to donate the $500 raised to the Heart Foundation. The next fundraising event for the club is the Middle School Bush Dance. Social Justice Club – Zoe Bidgood (Speaker) Throughout Term 1 the Social Justice Club has been looking at pollution and climate change – and how we can minimise our impact on the environment within our School community. To create awareness towards this issue we decided to create three murals to be put up around the school. Each mural is created by recyclable materials and is being put together by the members of the Social Justice Club. The murals will be of turtles and their environments surrounding them – this represents the

21

harm that the waste causes the turtles, from both the climate change issue of rising sea temperatures as well as the rubbish that enters the oceanic ecosystems and can be mistaken for ‘food’ by the turtles.
