May we extend our best wishes and congratulations to our Principal, Mrs Maria McIvor and husband Tony, on the occasion of the marriage of their eldest son and his fiancée in Christchurch this weekend. I hope all parents and grandparents who have experienced this joy will smile at the special memories. Life is like a patchwork quilt made of gathered memories. When Mrs McIvor asked me to write on her behalf, I thought, what better topic than ‘family’? As the community gathered this week for the Sports Awards evening, I reflected on the ‘Whitsunday family’ and the support the members of this school ‘family’ offer in times of joy, sorrow and celebration. Nic Beveridge, Class of 2003 and 2016 Paralympian, spoke of his positive approach to the ‘disruption’ in his life caused by the illness he suffered in Year 12 and his subsequent journey to Rio 2016 and beyond. He mentioned his mentors and his family. At these times of ‘disruption’, the Whitsunday family is caring and supportive and, for this, many of us are very grateful. The extended family is the foundation of a balanced society. Events throughout history have caused the movement of families for economic, cultural, social, geographic and religious reasons. Families today feel ‘disruption’ with economic downturn or conflict and may feel they are left without a support system. One delightful memory from childhood is my church family who were our ‘family’ between the biennial holidays with the grandparents and the extended family in

Bundaberg and Brisbane. The older members of the congregation are still ‘my special family’ remembering my parents and my birthday! We hear of the ‘global village’. Who is your support family? To whom are you the support family? Who have you welcomed to your extended family? 9

“You’re blessed when you can show people how to cooperate instead of compete or fight. That’s when you discover who you really are, and your place in God’s family. Matthew 5:9 (MSG) For those familiar with the history of the Bible, you will know how ‘disrupted’ the family of God were at so many times and in so many ways. God gave love to the community. Jesus brought love to the community. The Holy Spirit encouraged the community to share and care. “You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colours in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.” Matthew 5: 14-16 (MSG) I pray that each member of our school family will continue to take the opportunities to watch out, to care for self and for others, to laugh together and to celebrate the special Whitsunday family events. I am looking forward to catching up with friends old and new at Splendour in the Arts next Friday evening.

2017 DEBUTANTE BALL 2017 will see the school community hosting the 83rd Mackay Anglican Debutante Ball. This week Mrs Carson and I spoke with the students in Year 10. There will be ten weeks of presentation and dance practice after school on Tuesdays. We have tentatively booked The Lancaster Room at Harrup Park Country Club on Saturday 27 May. We do need to know who is interested so we can proceed with the planning. For further information, please email Mrs Wendy Carson or me. WEDNESDAY Everyone is welcome to take time out from their busy week to join the school family in a twenty-minute service of Praise and Thanksgiving from 7.45am on Wednesday in the Chapel of St Barnabas. Drop in used POSTAGE STAMPS – a fundraiser for ABMA - to Reverend Janet. PRAYER Please pray for: healing and hope for those who are unwell and those who are recovering from medical procedures; peace for those grieving the death of loved ones; good health and safety for our Adopt a Cop, Constable Isaac Mahony; our Adopted Elders, Rev’d Henry Kennell and Mrs Kennell; The Chair and Members of the School Board; and, our Principal, Staff and students. May God bless you and your family with love and joy as you walk this adventure called life.

and Economics trial examinations already sat this year, were well-received by both staff and students. Curriculum Update The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) recently announced that the timeline for the introduction of a new senior assessment and tertiary entrance system has been extended by one year. It will now commence with Year 11 Students in 2019 instead of 2018. The first graduates (this year’s Year 8s) will finish Year 12 in 2020. During the past two years, the QCAA has conducted two rounds of consultation on 35 draft syllabuses, trialled external assessments in seven subjects, with more than 20,000 students, and commenced the redevelopment of existing ICT systems. However, the QCAA has recognized that some transition activities will require more time than originally planned and as such, has postponed the changeover to external assessment. Whitsunday Anglican School is confident that the decision is a wise one. We will continue to trial our students in external practice examinations and ensure that our teachers have access to all professional development offered. Both the Chemistry

Every year, some subjects are chosen to be sent away to State Panels as district exemplars of Best Practice nd Whitsunday Anglican School always has subject chosen. This year, we have been advised that the local QCAA is sending away the folios in the subjects of English, Drama, Maths C, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Modern History, Ancient History and Technology Studies. This is a record number of subjects chosen and is testament to your students’ quality of work and our teachers’ dedication to their curriculum. ICAS Awards ICAS stands for the International

Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) and they are independent skillsbased tests held annually. Over one million student sit the tests from over 6,300 schools in Australia and New Zealand, in addition to students from over 20 countries including Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa and the USA. At Whitsunday Anglican School, we invite students to sit the ICAS English, Maths and Science tests, from Years 3 to 12. All the tests are relevant to what your students are learning at school and are a good way for you to see how they perform academically at a national standardised level. In addition to participation certificates, students are awarded credit and merit certificates. These are for students who perform in the top 46% of the country. At WAS, we have received 129 credit and merit awards in the English competitions, 129 credit and merit awards in the Maths competitions and 120 credit and merit awards in the Science competitions. We also have outstanding students who achieved in the top 10% of the country and received Distinctions in their competitions, and those who achieved in the top 1% of the country and received High Distinctions. If we think about the fact that 6,300 schools participate in these awards, this is a remarkable achievement and we are very proud of all our students.

Staffing News The past month has been a busy time for the staff at WAS as the year draws closer to an end. This is the time where preparations for next year are plotted and planned, in amongst the many culminating tasks and events our staff lead and engage in to professionally see out the final weeks of another positive and outstanding year for the School as a community. Over the past fortnight, we have heard some very exciting news. It is with happiness I announce that Mrs Charlene Slack (Art teacher), her husband Jo and son James welcomed their new baby daughter/ sister into the world on October 18 at 8:10am. A huge congratulations to the Slack family and the WAS community cannot wait to meet Mary Elizabeth on her first visit to School.

Ms Lisa Millard (PE teacher), also had some surprising news to share with the community that occurred two weekends ago. Lisa became engaged to her partner Jaebyn. On behalf of the community, congratulations Lisa and Jaebyn for this memorable moment in your lives! It is with sadness to inform the WAS community that Mr Craig and Mrs Sarah Clelland have tended their resignations and will be leaving Whitsunday Anglican School at the end of this year. This difficult, though understood and supported decision, is based around the needs and commitment to their immediate family who are situated in Victoria. On behalf of the community, we would like to thank both Sarah and Craig for the way that they have engaged and taken on the WAS way in their time at the School. Craig’s work within the Middle School as a teacher and Academic Performance Co-

ordinator and as Soccer Co-ordinator; and Sarah’s devotion to her Preparatory class in the Junior School and Kids Plus commitment among many other tasks they have taken on, have been performed and delivered with the utmost professionalism. We wish you both, as well as your children Oscar, Sophia, Grace and Charlotte all the very best in the next chapter of your journey in 2017. For 2017, we are in the positive position to have Ms Angela Holm continuing in an acting capacity for Semester 1 of next year, combining both Middle School Coordinators roles. Angela will be titled, the Acting Middle School Activities and Academic Performance Co-ordinator. With Ms Owens on Long Service leave this term, this will provide the Middle School and its staff with continuity, continued direction and security heading into 2017.

Mrs Sarah Wright The Senior School students and staff are quickly progressing through the term, with only three weeks remaining for our Year 12 students and four weeks for Years 9 to 11. While focusing on their academic studies and commitments, students are looking forward to the celebratory time of year when we farewell our Seniors. Their final day will be Friday 18 November, with the final House Meetings, a Whole School Assembly and the traditional ‘walk of honour’. Sports Awards Evening This wonderful evening took place this week. I wish to acknowledge our Sports Captains, Bethany Dick and William Shelford, with William presenting with poise, as MC and Bethany giving an inspirational address for our younger sportspeople. I also extend special congratulations to Liam Landrigan and Maggie Monckton who received the male and female Senior School Sportsperson of the Year Awards. Trade Training Centre Students This week I was privileged to attend the annual Trade Training Centre graduation of our students at Mackay Christian College. Six of our Year 12 students have completed a Certificate 1 in Engineering or Construction. I congratulate Ben Sivyer,

Lachlan Jamison, Tim Borg, Cameron Bates, Toby Cash and Quinn Mian on their fine achievements. I particularly congratulate Cameron Bates and Lachlan Jamison as the dual recipients of the CQU Single Pathways Students of the Year Award. The staff at the Trade Training Centre take wonderful care of our young men and I thank them for their ongoing loyalty, generosity and efforts. Year 12 Valedictory Service and Dinner Thank you to those parents who have purchased tickets and made seating arrangements for this event. All ticket purchases and seating must be finalised by 1 November. I look forward to acknowledging the fine achievements of our Senior Cohort at the Valedictory Service and Dinner on Saturday 12 November at The Event Centre at Mackay Turf Club. It is always a special family event in celebration of our Seniors. Year 12 Assessment Block Year 12 students and parents/guardians have been advised of the Year 12 Assessment Block timetable. This will take place from 7 – 11 November. As usual, students are expected to wear their formal (‘whites’ optional) school uniform for all examinations except for practical Physical Education. I encourage our Seniors to give of their best for their final assessment at the end of a very busy year.

Year 12 Activities Week The schedule for Year 12 Activities Week from 14 – 18 November has been released to our Seniors. In order to officially graduate from the School on Friday 18 November, attendance is compulsory during this week with the exception of optional activities which incur costs. Students are reminded to sign up for these optional activities at the Senior School Office. Mackay Anglican Debutante Ball 2017 This week Reverend Janet Story and Mrs Wendy Carson invited the Year 10 students to take part in the Mackay Anglican Debutante Ball next year. At this stage, expressions of interest from students are to be emailed to Mrs Carson or Rev’d Janet. Finally, I wish to acknowledge the Senior School staff for their hard work during this very busy final term. All staff give of their best for the good of the young people under our care. We look forward to finishing the year on a high note and anticipate an equally rewarding year in 2017.

Mr Mick Martin Thank You – Jump Rope for Heart I would like to thank the whole Junior School community for a wonderful effort in our recent annual Heart Foundation Jump Rope for Heart Health awareness and fund raising campaign; a total of $1374.19 was raised in support of this cause. I have constantly stated that we have a generous community through the giving of your time, experience, goods and support and this is just another wonderful example of your generosity. Over the past 11 years the students and Junior School community have raised over $50,000 (receiving 2 Bronze Level Awards from the Heart Foundation) in aid of this worthy cause. Our fund raising goes a long way to preventing, treating and stopping heart disease through providing:

Heart researchers with vital lab tools necessary in helping them understand the causes of heart disease.

Mackay Sony Foundation Children’s Holiday Camp Report We were excited when the 2016 Mackay Sony Foundation Children’s Holiday Camp was finally upon us. The camp extended over three days and this year we welcomed 17 campers. The camp officially began with families dropping off their campers. After a meeting with the nurses, tour of the school and receiving some wine and chocolates, the excited yet nervous families waved goodbye. Immediate connections were made with the campers and their companions as they ran off to the oval or art room to start some activates. With smiles on everyone’s face we drove off to the swimming pool. Jumping right in, splashing around and enjoying the countless Go Pro’s capturing every moment everyone went back to the school truly exhausted. This day also involved a visit from our local heroes, making kites and decorating plates. To settle down, all the campers and their companions got comfy and enjoyed a movie with an endless supply of popcorn.

races were among the most popular. After, the official medal ceremony took place with medals being awarded by Olympian Tracey Belbin. The day continued with a visit from the Brisbane Heat as well as Mackay’s mayor Greg Williamson. Finally, the long awaited RACQ CQRescue helicopter landed on our school oval to the campers delight. Taking a break from the high-energy activates, Reverend Janet held a chapel service where everyone joined together and sang beautiful hymns. The day came to a close with our very exciting disco which saw great costumes and even better dances moves. The final day was just as memorable as the previous two with jumping castles, face painting, karaoke and the animal farm being the easy favourites. After some emotional goodbyes, the camp came to a close.

Fit Notes, Not Sick Notes!

Australia is finally starting to take up the proven successful process of using “Fit Notes” instead of the traditional “Sick Notes”. Stating what the ill person is able to do is very different from the old style of “just take a few days off work!” There is a graduated work program, modified hours and duties to suit that injury and person specifically. This has been introduced in a trial in the ACT and will hopefully spread around the country soon.

Repeated studies in many countries has shown that the “Sick Note” or “Sick Certificate” causes longer illness and slower recovery with significant long term problems with loss of self esteem and worse physical outcomes!

The key factor with the “Fit Note” is to consider what activities can be done and what can’t be done. You may have a broken arm or leg, a sore back or stitches in your hand. That prevents you using that part of the body so you will need light duties or reduced use of that hand/ leg / arm etc. You DO NOT need to be off work completely. Sitting at home causes your muscles to waste all over your body, your healing slows, your mood falls and your skills reduce. The stats prove it all with long term disability rising exponentially even if you only have 4-7 days off work!

There was a great example in one of the companies locally that we manage where a worker had a crush injury to his hand, was admitted to hospital for major reconstructive surgery that afternoon and was back at work the next morning!!!! This showed the great attitude from all sides and everyone was happy.

So what is the answer? Aim to get back to work immediately or ASAP. Reduce use and protect the injured part of your body. Ask your Health and Safety Officer (or boss) how work can be adjusted to get you back immediately and tell your GP that you don’t need time off! Good workers are like gold to employers so that dedication will result in you keeping your job if crunch time comes and someone has to go…

More importantly, your recovery will be faster and result in better long term function physically and mentally – and your boss will “love” you!
