I am mindful that while I begin this missive, our 2016 Year 12s are putting pen to paper writing their written responses in the first of their four papers which together constitute the Queensland Core Skills (QCS) Test. Each year I witness the relief and real joy expressed by so many after the writing task when students feel good about their efforts and ability. Please enjoy the video I took of them as they shared together some QCS unity and spirit. The current Year 12s are among three final groups of Year 12s in the State who will sit the QCS test, with a new senior schooling and tertiary entrance system, including a new assessment regime and tertiary ranking system, set to start with Queensland’s current Year 9 when they enter Year 11 in 2018. At Whitsunday Anglican School we are well placed to move to the new regime in Queensland education which will offer depth and rigor. It is such a wonderful time of year in North Queensland. It feels as if the earth is being rejuvenated before our very eyes after some much needed rain and that puts a little added bounce in our steps and makes our hearts feel lighter. The great outdoors beckons for our students during Outdoor Education Week. The opportunities that our various outdoor programmes offer our students are vital components in their journey towards responsible adulthood. On our child’s journey to responsible adulthood, we witness their urgent desire to

express themselves creatively and uniquely, but somehow this changes in the years that follow puberty, so that rather than wanting to be individual in their expression, they sometimes seek to become more like others and begin the process of surrendering those God given parts of our humanity that make us unique.

Mrs Sarah Wright Congratulations and well done to the Senior School staff and students as we near the end of a very successful Term 3. It has been an extremely busy term with the Athletics Carnival, Whitsunday Voices, Shake and Stir performances, the Interhouse Maths competition, Year 10 SET Plans, the Year 12 QCST as well as a number of other events and activities. We now anticipate the busy period of examinations and Outdoor Education Week to come. I thank all staff and students for their efforts to get through this busy term in such a positive and cooperative manner. I wish to thank all Senior School staff for their work this term and for their efforts and generosity of time away from family to oversee our Outdoor Education Week. Parents and guardians, please reinforce to your student/students our behavioural expectations of students while in camp. Our Camps are wonderful and to be enjoyed by all, but students must give of their best at all times and uphold our Core Values. OptiMINDS A number of our Senior students competed in the OptiMINDS Regional Challenge on Sunday 28 August. As a result of our students’ fine efforts on the day, the following teams are invited to the state finals at the University of Queensland from 15-16 October. WAS 7 will represent Mackay in Division 3 Science Engineering, WAS 8 will represent Mackay in the Division 3 Language Literature section. Finally, WAS 5 (a Year 8 team) will represent Mackay in Division 2 Science Engineering. Young Women in Science Forum On 24 August, our School hosted the Young Women in Science Forum, organised by Rio Tinto and Mackay Zonta Club. With approximately 200 guests in attendance from schools around the Mackay region, we welcomed a range of speakers from across Queensland and Australia. These speakers included: Jessica Kahl, Commodore Katherine Richards, Tessa Elvey, Eleanor Foxcroft and Inez Pikaar. Thank you to Dania Ahmed (Year 12) who acted as compere for the morning, and to Mrs Jacq Notley and Mrs Jessica Vigliante for their organisation of the day. I know our students will look forward to this event again next year.

Year 11 Biology Heron Island Trip Thirty-six of our Year 11 students participated in the Biology Heron Island Trip from 20-24 August. They were able to complete valuable work over this five-day period. Thank you to Mr Michael McKenna and Mrs Kathy Steggles for their organisation of this trip which is always a wonderful outdoor learning experience for our students. Year 12 QCST Our Year 12 cohort is congratulated on giving of their very best over the two days of the Queensland Core Skills Test this week. They gathered as a cohort, sharing a hearty breakfast at the beginning of the two days. Particular thanks are extended to Mrs Margie Haines and the Alliance Catering staff in the Boarding House for their preparation of the breakfast. Over the days of testing, it was so pleasing to see the commitment with which the students approached the tests. Working assiduously and

with confidence, they were extremely well prepared after two years of preparation. Special thanks are extended to Ms Jenny Grant, Mr David Pritchard, Mrs Michelle Binney Stolp and Mrs Natalie Davis for their efforts in preparing our students. QTAC Reminder Year 12 students and parents are reminded of the QTAC deadline of 30 September (BPAY deadline is 28 September). Students who are still unsure of their QTAC preferences should make an appointment to see Ms Grant or Mrs Wright before Outdoor Education Week, or with Mrs Wright anytime from Sunday 18 to Friday 23 September, as the deadline falls during the school holidays. Year 12 Formal The Senior Formal will be held on Friday 9 September at The Marquee, Clarion Hotel Mackay Marina. Parents and guests other than the 2016 Senior Cohort are asked to be seated by 6.45pm as students will be welcomed in as a group at 7.00pm. All ticketing and seating has now been finalised. I look forward to enjoying a wonderful evening in celebration of our Senior students’ year. Year 12 Student Leadership 2017 Well done to the Year 11 Student Leadership 2017 applicants who presented their speeches at the Whole School Assembly last Friday. This week the students from Year 9 to Year 12, and the School staff, have placed their votes. The applicants will be short-listed for interviews in Week 5 of Term 4, followed by an announcement of the Office Bearers by Mrs McIvor to the Year 11 students on Wednesday 23 November, and an announcement of the Office Bearers by name and position at Awards Night on Friday 25 November. Mackay Children’s Holiday Camp After two very successful past Camps, the third Mackay Sony Foundation Children’s Holiday Camp will be held from Sunday 18 to Tuesday 20 September, immediately after Outdoor Education Week. I wish Mr Matt Hodge and his supporting staff and Year 11 students well for this event.

Ms Karen Owens The end of term comes to a close and we are now looking ahead with much anticipation to camp week. I thank parents in advance for their organisation and preparation on the home front that sets students up for a good week. I wish all our students and staff a rewarding and fulfilling week of outdoor experiences. This will be my last Whitsunday WORD for 2016 as I will be taking long service leave in Term 4. This has been planned for some time now and I am looking forward to family time in the southern states and the opportunity to extend and challenge myself further professionally and personally during this time. Mr Craig Clelland (Coordinator Middle School Academic Achievement) and Ms Angela Holm (Coordinator Middle School Activities/Events) will oversee Middle School operations during Term 4. All pastoral matters will continue through the Tutor teacher. I wish all students and families a well-deserved holiday break and a productive Term 4. I will see students and families again at the commencement of the 2017 School year. I would like to thank Fletcher Wilkinson 7M, for introducing his pet python to his class and me this week. Owning and caring for a pet is a big responsibility and it was an insightful occasion for students and staff to learn more

about these amazing reptiles. My office visitor was well-behaved throughout the day and it was with some relief that it made it’s way home safely again. Fathers Day Happy Fathers Day to all Dad’s and Grandfathers and also a special acknowledgement to the many male role models and mentors that teach, inspire and encourage our young people to challenge and test themselves. With your guidance and support our future is in great hands. Fathers Day photo gallery……... Mr Mick Martin Happy Father’s Day to all Our Junior School dads! Prep’s Father’s Day Evening To celebrate Father’s Day, the Preparatory Year staff and students hosted their traditional Father’s Day Evening last night. This is a tremendous occasion allowing dads or a significant male in the lives of the Prep students to spend time in the classroom and enjoy a bbq along with other dads and Preppies. Many thanks to the Preparatory staff and Mr. Shield for their efforts in providing a terrific evening for our dads. Term Three draws to a close Once again the time seems to have slipped by quickly with Outdoor Education Week due and the end of term upon us. I am certain that one of the highlights for the students will be Outdoor Education Week with a myriad of fantastic activities and experiences ahead of them. I also look forward to the Junior School’s participation in the Mackay Eisteddfod and the Splendour in the Arts next term. The latter has always produced a wonderful community sentiment within the Junior School and whole School. This has been a mighty term with many wonderful events; however, the most memorable for me will be the annual Junior School (and newly named) Global Learning Day, now in its 9th year: Our Global Learning Day and Food Fest is a signature event not only within the Junior School but in the whole school. It really is a terrific testament to the community feeling within the Junior School with students, staff and parents coming together to produce a morning of engaging, colourful and fun performances reflective of our multicultural community, along with a seemingly never ending supply of delicious ‘tastes’ from around the world. Enjoy the upcoming break and if you are a family leaving us we wish you all the very best and I look forward to greeting returning and new families in early October. Para Olympics – a letter to Nic Beveridge from Year 4S and Mr. Shield Dear Nic, I trust this finds you well and fully prepared for your upcoming experience as a first time Paralympian representing Australia on the world sporting stage. The children of 4S and indeed our wider school community are eager to follow your progress and we will be proud of you regardless of results as both a sportsman and a former student of Whitsunday Anglican School. Go well and I am sure the experience will be everything you want it to be. I have included some messages from the

student of Year 4S. Read student messages………… Global Learning Day, Thursday 8 September Next week sees the Junior Students and community acknowledging and celebrating the cultural diversity abound in our school with our Global Learning Day and ‘Tastes of the World’ food fest. Students, staff and parents have been busy rehearsing songs and dance steps and preparing a multitude of delicious food dishes. In anticipation of another wonderful experience, I thank all involved for their part in this eagerly awaited event on the Junior School calendar. Read more…………….. National Science Week A few weeks ago saw the Junior School students and staff fully engaged in a range of scientific investigations to help us acknowledge National Science Week. The students from Kindergarten to Year Four were able to investigate, explore, consider, appraise and evaluate with their peers in a range of interactive activities and hands-on science investigations. These were prepared and presented by the Junior School teachers and staff; our students became the scientists, rather than just reading about them. This will be the sixth year we have celebrated National Science Week and the enthusiasm for the activities, demonstrated by the students, was tremendous. Read Diya’s recount…………………… Artist in Residence – Ms Donna Free Whitsunday Anglican School is again privileged to have Wanda Bennett undertake the Artist in Residence programme for students in Years 3 and 4. These two creative days will take place on October 4 and 5 in first week of Term 4 and will provide a unique opportunity for our budding artists to experience using natural materials to make a collage. Wanda Bennett is a local artist who exhibits her work both locally and internationally. Her affiliation with nature and her relationship with her surroundings are the constant theme in her artistic practice and she will share these ideas with the students as they participate in this workshop. Parents and friends are invited to help out and should contact the Head of Junior School if interested. All costs for this event have been covered by the Junior School. Class Placement Procedure for 2017 An important aspect of the students’ development is the process of the provision of a positive learning environment. We value the ongoing communication between home and school as a fundamental element and source of information in such a process. However, on the whole the ‘local’

knowledge of the Junior School staff may well be the determining factor in shaping the best class grouping for a student. The (new) procedure for 2016 will be:

If parents wish to discuss the placement of their child in 2017 they are to book a meeting with the Head of Junior School during Week One to Week Three of Term 4 2016 – unless otherwise agreed upon, written requests will not be accepted. Parents who do make requests should do so on the understanding that the request will be discussed and considered with the appropriate personnel, however, there is no guarantee of placement as requested. In determining the class groups: * Gender balance, academic achievement and pastoral issues with aid teachers to custom classes groups. * Teachers will facilitate a sociogram in Term 4 to assist in the formation of class groups. * Please do not approach a class teacher with your requests. * There will be absolutely no guarantees of students being placed with any particular teacher or groups of peers. Self-reliance The Junior School’s You Can Do It! Program looks to instill in our students the five foundations of – Confidence, Getting Along, Organisation, Persistence, Resilience. It is these explicitly taught foundations that support our efforts to help students develop independence and selfregulation. I would like to share an article passed on by Wendy Carson, our School Nurse, about a small school in the USA working on their student’s self-reliance. This was borne out by the school ‘barring’ parents from coming back to school to drop things off – lunches, homework, hats, etc. To assist the parents in remembering this expectation they posted the sign below.

Booth House will be open by 8.00am for all returning families. Please ensure you are notifying the Boarding House of personal family arrangements and any delayed time frames. Confidential and Sensitive Family Issues As a Boarding Community we experience many family upsets throughout the year. Advanced notification assists us to provide support and ensure sufficient personal space is made available as we work through these times together.

If there are any questions or general information you would like me to a obtain and share with all our families I will be more than happy to do so. Inappropriate language and respect towards Staff (School and Boarding) We have recently had a number of unfortunate incidents within the Boarding House and during School co-curricular activities undertaken by some of our boarders. I would ask all parents to assist the School and Boarding Staff by reinforcing the appropriate conduct and respect towards staff and the use of appropriate language which represents the Core Values of Whitsunday Anglican School and Boarding.

families. However, I would ask parents to ensure that this contact and these conversations are made during the appropriate times when the boarders are not involved with their evening homework and studies. This does create disruption for the individuals and other boarders in these working areas.

Personal Contact with Boarders We now live in a very technical society where communication becomes more user friendly and convenient. This is particularly important and reassuring with boarding students and the distance involved with their respective

I will work to ensure that every student in Booth House feels comfortable approaching either myself or other residential staff if they have personal issues or concerns that require our support.

Personal Invitation I would like to extend an invitation to all members of our WAS Boarding Community to feel comfortable making direct contact with me if you have any concerns or issues relating to your daughters/sons experience within boarding. Proven Benefits of Interval Training

High intensity interval training has more benefits to your health than the traditional continuous exercise regimes, recent research proves! Review of 50 research papers confirms the benefits for weight loss and improved metabolism.

This flies in the face of the traditional processes for continuous exercise and shows that short bursts of exercise done regularly through the day are even better than doing one big session. The key though is that it needs to be “vigorous” exercise (yes I have said that before…) where you are reaching the limit of your endurance. “Vigorous” is defined as reaching 65-90% of VO2max - or more simply calculated getting your heart rate to 200 minus your age.

So amazingly, you can exercise without getting too hot and sweaty for short bursts, spread over the day and get the more benefits as being in the gym or doing a big run for the same time! While this is great news, you still have to get off your bottom and DO IT!

All vigorous exercise kick starts your metabolism so you are burning off more calories at rest for the rest of the day. This is the absolutely critical key to weight loss as our bodies drop their metabolic rates when you reduce your food intake – so that is the reason so many people do not lose weight when they go on a diet….

Key message – vigorous exercise with dieting is critical for weight loss. Interval training has advantages and just going for brisk walks is better than nothing. You will also feel so much better - JUST DO IT!!!!
