Letter from the Director As we enter the summer, I reflect on the generosity, passion for the arts, and level of excitement that our Hui community shared through the start of 2015. It is with this spirit that we prepare for another summer filled with opportunities! We are confident that at Hui No‘eau, you’ll find many ways that you and your loved ones can experience the joy that comes from creative self-expression! This issue of Create lists over 100 classes and workshops in a wide variety of media taught by our talented ‘ohana of Teaching Artists. To this fabulous mix, we’re adding an exciting group of Visiting Artists from Oahu, Colorado, and the East Coast and we can’t wait to see the new ideas and techniques that they will share! Mahalo nui loa to the many wonderful Hui supporters who attended this year’s Art Affair and donated to Raise the Paddle in support of our Visiting Artist Program. Your generosity is already making a big impact on Hui programming. Every summer, I am also thrilled to welcome our keiki to the Hui campus for Camp Kaluanui! Over 250 children will enjoy up to nine weeks of painting, drawing, imaginative play, mixed media sculpture, metalsmithing, and more! The Hui’s incredible summer session culminates with a celebration of our young artists on Family Day and a Youth Art Exhibition (pg. 3) featuring their diverse, playful, and expressive work. The Hui provides a place where creative individuals of all ages and abilities (not just keiki!) can feel supported and inspired. This imaginative energy will be on full display in Heart of the Hui: A Student & Faculty Exhibition, which honors the importance of visual arts education and is a true testament to the talent fostered in this creative space. Finally, I send my deepest gratitude to all of the generous donors who supported Hui No‘eau in 2014 (pgs. 23 - 26). Mahalo to all those who allow this community to flourish, including our donors, members, artists, teachers and volunteers. We look forward to continuing to work together to enrich the lives of individuals in our vibrant community by increasing exposure to and encouraging exploration of the visual arts. Together we can keep the arts alive on Maui!

Celebrated Events 2015 President’s Reception

Art Affair 2015 Frida & Diego: A Feast for the Senses

The cherished donors who contributed $500 or more to Hui No‘eau in 2014 gathered together on January 8th to celebrate with a sneak preview, blessing, and walkthrough of the 2015 Hui No‘eau Annual Juried Exhibition. Kainoa Horcajo opened the 2015 exhibition season by blessing the gallery space with an oli aloha. Executive Director Caroline Killhour then guided guests through the incredible collection of 65 works, providing insights into Juror Charles Cohan’s choices as well as giving her own thoughts on the merits of the exhibited pieces. The Hui sends our warmest mahalo to our vital community of supporters; your generosity makes it possible for Hui No‘eau to continue our work of unlocking creativity through exceptional visual arts education and enhancing that endeavor through the historic preservation of the Kaluanui Estate. We could not do it without you! To become part of this special community of supporters this year, please visit huinoeau.com/ support.

Viva Hui No‘eau! Art Affair 2015: Frida & Diego - A Feast for the Senses was a fiesta to remember! On Saturday, February 28th, the Hui community celebrated with the spirit of Frida & Diego as we joined together to enjoy a festive evening in support of Hui No‘eau and the visual arts. Art Affair 2015 featured Mexican inspired dishes by Bev Gannon’s Celebrations Catering, a premium open bar, live and silent auctions, and dancing and live music by Neto Peraza & The Hot Salsa Band. Two special guests in attendance were recognized for their generosity, dedication, and steadfast support of the Hui: Cheryl Tipton was presented with this year’s Board of Director’s Recognition Award and Bob Flint, a Hui teaching artist for over 10 years, was honored with the Hui Angel Award. The Hui community then “raised their paddles” for the Hui’s Visiting Artist Program, a program that enriches Maui’s visual arts community by offering hands-on workshops and presentations by locally, nationally, and internationally recognized visual artists from off-island. Beyond a fabulous evening of music, food, arts, and culture, Art Affair is a powerful demonstration of the community coming together for a common cause—to help ensure the continuation of our mission to unlock creativity through exceptional visual arts education and to enhance this endeavor through the preservation of the historical Kaluanui Estate. The Hui’s continued ability to offer meaningful opportunities in the visual arts to our Maui residents and visitors is made possible by the support of our generous donors. A sincere mahalo goes out to Art Affair Committee Chair Tim Garcia and Vice Chair Dane Ward who put their hearts into making Art Affair a fabulous celebration. The Hui is grateful to Hui Angels Judy Bisgard, Judy Bruder, Deybra Fair, Shannon Hoekstra, Sandi Stoner, and David & Sandra Florence for their dedication, vision, commitment, and hard work! We would also like to recognize the many artists, individuals, and businesses who donated to this year’s auction. A special thank you goes to Kip Toner for leading a great auction and to Emma White for acting as this year’s emcee. Mahalo to everyone for making this event such a tremendous success! In fact, most of the necessary tools can be made DIY in the studio (as you will see!). Experienced metalsmiths will discover an array of variations and innovations to inform their work, while less experienced makers will discover a unique, low-tech method for producing jewelry and small objects in silver, bronze, pewter, and even aluminum. Hui Spotlight Last summer, the Hui received an exciting email from an inspired high school student, Julia Gillette, who hoped to volunteer her time to assist with the Hui’s Summer Camp Kaluanui while visiting family on Maui. Would we be interested in her help? Of course! Julia proved to be an incredible volunteer camp counselor throughout several weeks of Summer Camp Kaluanui 2014—bringing her warm smile, positive spirit, and hardworking nature to every aspect of her camp counselor role. When Julia returned to Illinois to begin her junior year of high school, she felt inspired to continue to support the Hui’s youth art education programs. Through her own 501(c)(3) non-profit, Art Empowerment for Life, which she founded in 2013, and a fundraiser that she organized independently this past fall, Julia raised $5,000 to support scholarships for children to attend the Hui’s youth programs. With Julia’s gift, the Hui has already been able to bring the visual arts into the lives of more Maui children. The Hui staff is incredibly impressed by Julia’s vision and grateful for her support. We hope you enjoy getting to know a bit more about this wonderful young lady—in her own words! We are also thrilled that Julia will be returning to Maui again this summer to volunteer with us. Mahalo nui loa, Julia! What inspired you, at such a young age, to create your very own non-profit organization to benefit children’s art education? Are you an artist yourself? I am a naturally quiet person, so art has given me the opportunity to show my personality and spirit without having to be loud. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to participate in several art programs at the Hui, the Art Institute of Chicago, and Rhode Island School of Design. These classes inspired my passion for art, and as a result, I was able to be exposed to different techniques and refine my artistic interests. Many of these weekend and summer programs are expensive. I wanted my passion for art and my class experiences to be available to young artists who may not have this opportunity. Tell us a bit more about Art Empowerment for Life! Art Empowerment For Life is a registered 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that has the primary objective to provide opportunities for children and adolescents to pursue their passions in art and further personal creative expression by providing scholarships to art programs such as the Hui No‘eau. Hawai‘i is where I first became passionate about art because of the beautiful landscapes and seascapes as well as the colors. It is because of this that I wanted the Hui to be given the first donation. Please share a bit about your experience while volunteering at Camp Kaluanui. I absolutely loved working at the Hui during the summer. Assisting at the children’s art camp gave me first hand experience on how art can empower children and build their confidence. It was amazing to see the children use such creative skills and also learn more about their passions and interests while doing art. The teachers were fabulous and the children sincerely loved learning new ways to express themselves. I was also amazed every day when these children would come up with the most amazing and creative ideas. They inspired me so much! It was truly a wonderful experience. See a professional gallery exhibition: With five different shows scheduled for 2015, you’ll be sure to view some outstanding work created by artists from Maui, Hawai‘i and beyond! With many of the exhibited works available for purchase, you might even find that perfect piece to add to your collection.

Browse the Gallery Shop: You’ll feel like you’ve discovered your very own treasure trove of handmade items and fine art when you shop at the Hui’s Gallery Shop at Kaluanui. Many of our items are made right onsite by local artists in our Open Studios program. You’ll also get to see inside a historical Maui home!

See Artists in Action: Peek inside the Hui’s professionally-equipped studios during Open Studio hours to see artists hard at work! You can also watch glass artists create stunning works of art in the Hui’s new glassblowing studio! Visit huinoeau. com/glass for the schedule of demo days!

Tour the Gardens: We invite you to explore the Hui’s beautiful and historical Kaluanui Estate! You are welcome to create your own route or if you’d rather reserve a guide ($12/ person with advance reservations), we are happy to oblige! About an hour in duration, this walking tour will give you some fascinating new historical and botanical information!

Note: Pre-registration is required for all Hui classes. Full payment is required at the time of registration. To ensure enrollment in a class, we recommend registering at least one week prior to the start date of class. We require seven days notice to issue a refund or class credit less a $25 processing fee. Memberships are non-refundable. If the person registering has a disability and needs accommodation to be able to fully participate in a class, the Hui should be alerted at the time of registration (at least one week in advance of class start date) to discuss any accommodations needed.
