Themed Juried Exhibition: Six-Word Memoirs April 26 – June 7 Receiving Day: April 16 / 9:00 am – 4:00 pm Opening Reception: April 26 / 5:00 – 7:00 pm

Legend has it that Ernest Hemingway was once challenged to write a story in only six words. His response? “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.” In November 2006, Larry Smith, founder of SMITH Magazine, gave the six-word novel a personal twist by asking his community to describe their lives in exactly six words. They sent in short life stories in droves, from the bittersweet (“Cursed with cancer, blessed with friends”) and poignant (“I still make coffee for two”) to the inspirational (“From migrant worker to NASA astronaut”) and hilarious (“Married by Elvis, divorced by Friday”). And the Six-Word Memoir project was born. Since then, Six-Word Memoir project has become a global phenomenon and a bestselling book series. Six-Word Memoirs have been featured in hundreds of media outlets from NPR to The New Yorker, covered on tens of thousands of blogs, and, as of Summer 2010, can be found inside 1 million Honest Tea bottle caps.

Hui No‘eau is thrilled to collaborate with Larry Smith to bring Six-Word Memoirs to Maui, combining the written word with visual arts in this exciting and dynamic exhibition! Questions? Contact Exhibitions Coordinator Katie Peterson at katiep@huinoeau.com or (808) 572-6560 ext. 33.

GRAFICA: AUWAHI with Artist in Residence Mazatl

Malama Wao Akua Exhibition Opening & Closing Celebrations

In May & June 2018, Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center presented GRAFICA: AUWAHI—a project in collaboration with 2018 Artist in Residence Mazatl, Visiting Artist Kill Joy, and the Auwahi Forest Restoration Project. Auwahi dry forest on southwest Haleakala is one of the last representatives of a nearly lost and biologically unique Hawaiian forest type. For many Hawaiian species, including several with great cultural importance, Auwahi appears to be their last stand.

Hui No‘eau & East Maui Watershed Partnership celebrated the opening of the Malama Wao Akua Exhibition with a wonderful gathering of artists and conservationists! We were honored to celebrate the 51 adults, 14 high school students, 22 middle school students, and 10 elementary school students who contributed 117 pieces to this exhibition. We hope you enjoyed getting to know 78 unique native species represented in the Hui gallery. Mahalo to East Maui Watershed Partnership, the exhibiting artists, Jurors Mina Elison and Dr. Fern Duvall II, Halau Ke‘ala Kahinano O Puna, and our entire community for celebrating the visual arts and conservation on Maui! We also send our deepest appreciation to sponsors and community supporters Aloha Recycling, the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority, Old Lahaina Lu‘au, Flatbread Pizza, and Mana Foods.

Over 6 weeks, residency activities included artist research, studio visits, school outreach programs, the installation of the GRAFICA: AUWAHI mural, and the creation of two original woodblock prints by Mazatl and Kill Joy, featured in the Hui’s Wahi Pana Auwahi Exhibition and recognized by the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts Art in Public Places Program. Give a Gift Beyond Your Years What is your passion? If the Hui’s educational offerings and/or efforts in historic preservation reflect your values, please consider setting aside a gift in your will or trust. In addition to supporting our work through your generous cash donations, here are just a few ways you can contribute to the sustainability of Hui No‘eau for future generations. We encourage you to consult with your financial advisor to discuss the tax implications of these options: Bequests One of the easiest ways to help involves simply naming Hui No‘eau as a beneficiary in your will and living trust. A bequest may be for a particular dollar amount or percentage of your estate. Estate tax savings may be significant. Life Insurance Policy & Retirement Assets Often overlooked by donors, naming Hui No‘eau as a partial or full beneficiary of these assets can provide support for the organization. Contact the Development Office at (808) 572-6560 ext. 25 or email erinw@huinoeau.com if you are interested in making a legacy contribution to Hui No‘eau!

John W. Hoxie, Jr. & David Florence Memorial Funds Our Hui ‘ohana honors two incredible Hui angels and ambassadors: John W. Hoxie, Jr. and David Florence. As we remember their dedication to Maui and our Hui community, it is our hope that these memorial funds will create opportunities for the next generation of artists and students in woodworking and jewelry/metalsmithing. Please contact the Development Office at (808) 572-6560 ext. 25 for more information and to support either of these important funds.

Exhibition Sponsorships The Hui’s Exhibition Program provides an opportunity for artists of all ages to showcase their work in a public, non-commercial gallery space for visitors and art enthusiasts to enjoy. Are you or your business interested in voicing your support? Contact the Development Office at 808-572-6560 ext. 25 or email erinw@huinoeau.com for more information about the great benefits you’ll receive when you sponsor an exhibition at Hui No‘eau in 2019!

art changes lives! Give to the Hui’s Annual Fund!

 Yes!

Art changes lives! Hui No‘eau recognizes the profound impacts of the arts in children’s lives. Many low-income students in our community started back to school in August facing the reality that their access to the arts has been severely reduced by state funding cuts and a realignment of priorities.

I want to support visual arts education in my community!

Art education matters! Consistent access to arts and culture from a young age has been shown to have major impacts on students’ social and intellectual development. Art builds critical thinking skills and a lifelong love of learning. Art positively affects school culture, especially student motivation, attitudes, and attendance. Studies by Americans for the Arts find that low-income students who are highly engaged in the arts are five times less likely to drop out of high school and more than twice as likely to graduate from college.

• Inspire local educators with new techniques, and give them the tools, strategies, and confidence to incorporate more visual thinking into school lessons through Hui Professional Development classes; • Expose young students to new experiences in field trips to the Hui where students create their own artwork, observe new art forms in action, develop observational skills and vocabulary, and experience a museum type gallery setting for the first time; • Present eight fine art exhibitions that provide a vital place for local artists to share their voice and vision with the world; • Encourage interaction, learning, and community in the Hui’s Open Studios program, where students and artists gather together to create artwork in a professional studio spaces. Because of supporters like you, the Hui is able to provide these multidisciplinary opportunities for children and adults in our area.
