As spring transitions into Maui’s beautiful summer months, Hui No‘eau is thrilled to unveil GRAFICA: AUWAHI — a project in collaboration with 2018 Artist in Residence Mazatl and the Auwahi Forest Restoration Project (AFRP)!

Known around the world for his incredible murals and woodcut prints, Mazatl is a graphic maker from Mexico City who collaborates with communities to create work that inspires conversation around issues of social, political, and environmental justice. During his 5-week residency (pages 5 & 6) at the Hui this May, Mazatl will create new work inspired by his experiences at Auwahi. While his residency culminates with an installation of work at the Hui, there are many events and happenings along the way that are open to everyone, including an exhibition opportunity (page 4)! We hope you will join us as we learn from a world-class artist and explore a treasured Maui landscape. This is Mazatl’s first experience in Hawai‘i, so we welcome him with lots of aloha! We are very excited and grateful to collaborate with Dr. Art Medeiros and the Auwahi Forest Restoration Project to bring you these incredible opportunities. Creativity will continue to shine brightly as the Hui enters the summer season of youth programs (pages 17 & 18)! Every year, the Hui welcomes over 250 Maui keiki to participate in Summer Camp Kaluanui and Teens & Tweens Art Academy. Arts education is vital for our youth, improving their academic performance and providing job readiness. From jewelry & metalsmithing to history, design, the environment, Hawaiian arts & culture, and everything in between, the Hui offers a diverse arts-based curriculum for every student to enjoy. Our talented Teaching Artists provide students with tools to explore their creativity, discover their individual voices, and work together as a team to create expressive works of art that will amaze you! This issue of Create also includes many wonderful classes and workshops for adults (pages 7 – 16). Everyone has a creative spark—and Hui classes are a great way of letting this light shine in a professional, inspiring, and supportive environment. Finally, I express my sincerest gratitude to all of the generous donors who supported Hui No‘eau in 2017 (pages 23 – 25). Mahalo to all those who allow this community to flourish, including our donors, members, artists, teachers, volunteers, and our newest community partners. We are so grateful to all of you! We look forward to continuing to work together to enrich the lives of individuals in our vibrant community by increasing exposure to and encouraging exploration in the visual arts. Together we keep the arts alive and thriving on Maui! With aloha,

spotlight on giving!

Hui No‘eau’s Na Keiki No‘eau After-school Arts Program Thrives at Makawao Elementary! With support from the Atherton Family Foundation, Alexander & Baldwin, Inc. and private donors, Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center completed the first year of a new program called Na Keiki No‘eau in 2017. Na Keiki No‘eau is an outreach program that sends the Hui’s professional teaching artists into Maui’s public school A+ after-school programs to engage students in grades Kindergarten through 5th in the visual arts. Na Keiki No‘eau brings arts-rich learning opportunities directly to students in their existing after-school programs—filling a long void of time with engaging, hands-on art activities. Throughout its pilot year in 2017, the Hui’s Na Keiki No‘eau Program sent teaching artists into Makawao Elementary School’s A+ program. The Hui provided all art supplies and instruction. Teaching artists worked through a rotating schedule of grade levels engaging approximately 285 students in a variety of art projects such as still life paintings, modeled marbled mosaics, scratchboard prints, Aboriginal inspired dot paintings, van Gogh landscapes, Picasso faces, Papua New Guinea masks and more! Artwork created in the program was exhibited at Makawao Elementary during two separate family events held at school for students, teachers, parents, and the community to enjoy. The Hui is thrilled about the success of this wonderful program! Participating students demonstrated a high level of engagement and creative growth throughout the program. Students developed skills, vocabulary, and familiarity with a variety of art media and techniques. Hui No‘eau Teaching Artist Claudio Marchetti shared: “Working after school with these children has shown me how grateful the students are to have this opportunity. They look forward to every time they come and learn about something new and I have seen an improvement in their technical ability. Even their enthusiasm has grown more and more as the weeks went by. For many children it seemed that most of our curriculum and projects were new experiences for them. Many students had not learned about art history, world art cultures, and the breadth of media we worked with in this last year.”

“Working after school with these children has shown me how grateful the students are to have this opportunity.” -Claudio Marchetti, Teaching Artist

Makawao Elementary School Curriculum Coordinator Susan Harper, shared, “The value [of Na Keiki No‘eau] to our students goes beyond the art they produce. For many students who struggle academically or socially, they have found a time and place where they can thrive. Working with peers from outside their regular classrooms has broadened their social circles. Students who initially were reluctant to participate are now working with enthusiasm. What I have found most rewarding is that some of our students are inspired to write about their -Susan Harper, Makawao Elementary School projects. Early in the school year, students did printmaking and were encouraged to title their work. The results were creative and often amusing. Other projects Curriculum Coordinator led to students incorporating their art into short stories in their own classrooms. Each week the students demonstrate greater sense of color and design and a higher level of expression and individuality. They erase less and embellish with greater abandon.”

“For many students who struggle academically or socially, they have found a time and place where they can thrive.”

Based on the great success, results, and demand for this program, Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center is currently seeking funding to continue with a second year of this important program at Makawao Elementary School, and also to expand Na Keiki No‘eau into two more elementary schools—Pukalani and Pa‘ia—for the 2018-2019 school year. Donors interested in supporting Na Keiki No‘eau or any of the Hui’s important visual arts education programs can contact the Hui’s Development Office at erinw@huinoeau.com or call (808) 572-6560 ext. 25.
