e komo mai! letter from the director Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit visual arts education organization located in beautiful Upcountry Maui. Since 1934, Hui No‘eau has provided an accessible space for the community to experience and enjoy the visual arts. Throughout the year, the Hui hosts art classes for adults and children, artist lectures, fine art exhibitions, events, tours, and educational outreach programs. Working artist studios are nestled across the grounds and a gallery shop featuring artwork created by Hui members is located in the main house. As a community-based organization, we thank you for helping us continue our mission of unlocking creativity through exceptional visual arts education and enhancing this endeavor through the preservation of the historic Kaluanui Estate.

2018 brings wonderful new opportunities to learn, create, and experience the joy of participating in the visual arts. This issue of Create contains 100 classes and workshops (pages 5-23) that engage the artist in you—no matter your age or skill level! The New Year is the perfect time to try out a class, discover a new medium, learn from a Visiting Artist, or get back into the studio and explore your creativity! We also look forward to another exciting exhibition season in 2018, including our Annual Juried Exhibition (page 4). We can’t wait to share the creativity of the many talented artists in our community!

7 – Every week, the “Na Keiki No‘eau” program happens at Makawao Elementary! Hui Teaching Artists provide hands-on learning in the arts for 150 students in the A+ program. 8 – More than 400 preschoolers visit the Hui each year through “Explore & Discover” field trips.

Happy holidays and New Year to our Hui ‘ohana! In 2017, we celebrated an incredible centennial year as the Hui’s historic Kaluanui Estate turned 100 years old. Mahalo to everyone who joined in the exciting festivities all year long! It was very special to see our community come together with a shared passion and love for Hui No‘eau and our beautiful Kaluanui home. It is this deep commitment to the arts and appreciation for Kaluanui’s history that continues to drive our community of artists and supporters to create a bright future for Kaluanui and Hui No‘eau. The celebrations continue into February with Art Affair 2018—Hui No‘eau’s premier annual fundraiser! This year’s event will take inspiration from the Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai and his most iconic work, The Great Wave Off Kanagawa (page 5)

Visiting Artist from India

In October, the Hui collaborated with the East-West Center Arts Program to bring Visiting Artist Sufiyan Ismail Khatri to the Hui! Sufiyan lives in Ajrakhpur Village in Bhuj city of Kutch district in India. His family has been practicing the Ajrakh natural dye and handblock printed craft for the last nine generations.

Hui’s Executive Director Honored by Maui Non-Profit Director’s Association

On October 19, Maui Non-Profit Director’s Association awarded the Hui’s Executive Director Caroline Killhour with Maui County's Outstanding Non-Profit Executive Director Award. This award recognizes non-profit executives for their leadership, vision, and improvement of programs and services. “I am truly honored to receive this award. It is such a privilege to lead the Hui and be amongst the other incredible nominees who work to make Maui a better place to live,” Caroline said. With beautiful, whimsical, and skillfully crafted handmade items for every occasion, the Gallery Shop at Kaluanui is filled with handmade items from over 75 local artisans and unique museum quality products. All purchases help support the Hui and local artists. Many of the items are made in the Hui’s very own studios. New items arrive all the time! The Gallery Shop is open daily from 9am-4pm.

Malama Wao Akua Opening Celebration — September 15, 2017 Hui No‘eau & East Maui Watershed Partnership celebrated the opening of the Malama Wao Akua Exhibition with a wonderful gathering of artists and conservationists! We are honored to celebrate the 55 adults and 33 students who contributed 89 pieces to this exhibition! We hope you enjoyed getting to know 83 unique native species represented in the Hui gallery. The Solo Artist Exhibition is one of the only exhibitions in the state of Hawai‘i that provides the unique opportunity for artists to be personally involved in all facets of exhibition planning and installation. It challenges artists to envision and produce an innovative and cohesive body of work to be shown in a professional gallery setting. This exhibition advances careers, inspires community dialogue, and continues to define our local visual arts movement. In 2018, we welcome Cudra Clover as the Hui’s Solo Artist. Along with a selection of her biomorphic silk paintings, she will be presenting an installation called Hysteria, that uses elements of these works to create an interactive experience. In this workshop, we’ll use pastel drawings as the basis for monotype prints. Students will also enjoy watching images transform and soften as we run them through the press multiple times. This technique is simple, versatile, and can be combined with a number of other printmaking techniques. The studio environment is non-toxic and water-soluble inks will be used. Melanie Rick is a National Board Certified Teacher, certified Reading Specialist, and co-owner and senior arts integration consultant for Focus 5, Inc. She designs and leads workshops, in-depth courses, and summer institutes focused on aligning arts integration, best instructional practices, and current research in the fields of arts and education. Melanie works in art museums, schools, and art centers across the country helping teachers develop their students’ visual literacy and critical thinking skills. Melanie is currently a course leader and instructional arts coach for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Art’s Changing Education Through the Arts (CETA) program in Washington, D.C. She also served as the CETA program consultant for five years, working with teaching artists to develop and evaluate workshops presented at the Kennedy Center. Melanie holds her MA in Literacy Curriculum and Instruction from Virginia Tech and BA in Elementary and Special Education from Clemson University. She has twenty years of experience integrating the arts with general education, special education and English Language Learners. This workshop focuses on looking and talking about illustrations in fiction picture books before, during, and after reading to help students develop the skills of prediction, inference/drawing conclusions, Color Fundamentals Sunday, 1 day sequence, and retelling a story. Visual art is a text that students of all reading abilities can access. This workshop introduces the language of visual art so that teachers feel confident looking, thinking, and talking about art with their students. Join us to learn about resources for building a library of images that can be used to efficiently build background knowledge, teach content, generate points of inquiry for research, and assess understandings in social studies, science, and reading. Join Jennifer for an illuminating experience designed to demystify color, one of the glorious standards of artistic visual perception! This class will begin with the properties of color and quickly move into the inner workings of the color wheel. We will dive into color perception, the psychological impact of color, and methods for creating color harmony through color mixing. Students will create a series of color charts to accompany their new understanding of color and color relationships, leading to more harmonious and informed color use. Additionally, Jennifer will share her own process of color selection and mixing while painting. JEFF JUHLIN

Salt Lake City, Utah January 27 – February 5 Jeff Juhlin is a nationally recognized artist known for his encaustic and mixed media painting and printmaking work that evokes a meditative and grounded exploration of color, space, and mark-making. Jeff has been working with encaustic for over fifteen years and has completed residencies and fellowships at the Virginia Center for Creative Arts and Moulin Au Neuf in Auvillar, France. His work is included in numerous national and international exhibitions including recent exhibits in France and Korea. Born in Salt Lake City, Jeff studied at the University of Utah and the Bellas Artes in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. He holds a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. Jeff’s work has been featured in several publications including Encaustic With A Textile Sensibility by Daniela Woolf and Encaustic Art in the 21st Century by Anne Lee & Ashley Rooney. Encaustic: The Basics & Beyond Session 1: Saturday & Sunday, 2 days January 27 & 28 / 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Encaustic Intensive

Saturday – Monday, 3 days February 3 – 5 / 10:00 am – 4:00 pm Designed for those artists who have some prior experience with encaustic, this workshop will refine and develop skills with basic encaustic while also exploring more advanced techniques. Participants will work with diverse materials such as paper and fabric that can be incorporated into artwork through collage. Students will also explore mark-making and more advanced ways of creating line and texture, as well as transparent color layering and techniques for creating smooth surfaces. Participants will be encouraged to explore and develop their artistic vision and expand their visual vocabulary. Optional informal individual critique/discussions will be offered to all during the second and third day of the workshop. Session 2: Tuesday & Wednesday, 2 days January 30 & 31 / 10:00 am – 4:00 pm Discover the luminous and translucent quality of encaustic painting! Students will learn the basics of an ancient painting technique that uses hot beeswax mixed with resin and pigment. Popular for use with collage materials, image transfers, and photography, encaustic painting involves applying layers of molten wax to a support surface and fusing each additional layer to the previous layer with heat. Each participant will complete one or more small paintings during the workshop and will come away knowing how to prepare surfaces, melt paint, mix colors, create transfers and collages, and more! Emily Gui is an experimental printmaker and mixed-media artist. She works primarily in silkscreen, cyanotype, and drawing. Using a combination of innovative printmaking materials, participants will create printmaking plates using hot wax on Yupo, a synthetic paper support. In this class, you’ll learn the proper techniques to set, post, and nest greenware in a kiln for bisque firing. The workshop will include kiln controller programming instructions, an overview of what happens in the kiln at different temperature stages, and information on why bisque firing is ramped in a specific way. Students will also review how to fire a manual electric kiln if a computer program is not available. This class is the first step in becoming certified to fire a Hui kiln. Stop by and talk story about crafting the many implements used in hula! Gayle’s background in agriculture led her and her husband Kent to start Na Kani O Hula in 1994. They successfully farmed ipu and crafted hula implements for more than 20 years in Kula, Maui. Gayle’s many years as a hula dancer also gives her an understanding of how each instrument will be used. Gayle is currently the cultural advisor for Ka‘anapali Beach Hotel.

Learn to make your own single ‘uli‘uli or Hawaiian feathered gourd rattle! Students will learn how these instruments were made in ancient times, including the types of plants and tools that were used. Participants will also enjoy the hands-on experience from start to finish, including constructing the gourd rattle, printing kapa, sewing feathers, and making cordage.

Bring the whole family to the Hui for a fun & creative Friday night! “Family Friday” workshops are designed to encourage children along with an adult guardian to create artwork together. Welcome to the Hui Staff Team, Jen and Haley! Haley Aniceta Eligio was born and raised in Upcountry Maui and graduated from Seabury Hall in 2013. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio in May 2017. Haley grew up attending classes, volunteering, and working in sales and events with the Hui. The Hui is grateful that Haley is back home, returning in June as the Hui’s Capital Campaign Coordinator. Jennifer Fry obtained her bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. While in Chicago, she worked with several independent photographers, collaborated with amazing artists, and spent two years interning for Chicago Public Art Group. Jen has spent her time on Maui in business management working as an entrepreneur, business owner, and general manager for several different companies. She is thrilled to be working with a nonprofit again and especially excited to be a part of the community at the Hui.

EARLY REGISTRATION DISCOUNT!

Register for Winter & Spring 2017 session classes by January 2 to receive 10% off class tuition! Please mention or apply promo code NEWYEAR18CL (classes), NEWYEAR18WS (workshops), or NEWYEAR18CP (camps) in order to receive the discounted price. Limit: Some classes do not qualify. This discount cannot be combined with other offers and cannot be used retroactively. Note: Pre-registration is required for all Hui classes. Full payment is required at the time of registration. To ensure enrollment in a class, we recommend registering at least one week prior to the start date of class. We require seven days notice to issue a refund or class credit less a $25 processing fee. Memberships are non-refundable. If the person registering has a disability and needs accommodation to be able to fully participate in a class, the Hui should be alerted at the time of registration (at least one week in advance of class start date) to discuss any accommodations needed.
