e komo mai!

Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit visual arts education organization located in beautiful Upcountry Maui. Since 1934, Hui No‘eau has provided an accessible space for the community to experience and enjoy the visual arts. Throughout the year, the Hui hosts art classes for adults and children, artist lectures, fine art exhibitions, events, tours, and educational outreach programs. Working artist studios are nestled across the grounds and a gallery shop featuring artwork created by Hui members is located in the main house. As a community-based organization, we thank you for helping us continue our mission of unlocking creativity through exceptional visual arts education and enhancing this endeavor through the preservation of the historic Kaluanui Estate.

letter from the director upcoming events It has been an incredible year for Hui No‘eau! As we head into our final session of classes for 2019 and look towards the future, all of us at the Hui are overwhelmed with gratitude for our donors, members, students, artists, and the beautiful Kaluanui Estate that we call home. I am so inspired by the vibrant community of artists who take classes here, work in our open studios, and exhibit their work in our gallery and gift shop. Together, we have created such a unique haven for creativity on Maui. There’s nowhere else quite like the Hui! This summer, over nine weeks of art camps, the Hui gave our youngest artists a creative place to play, learn, discover, and develop their skills and artistry. This immersive arts experience is such a special experience for our keiki and sends them back to school buzzing with artistic energy and enthusiasm. With thanks to our generous supporters, the Hui continues to provide inspiring art programs for preschoolers through teens throughout the school year (pages 19-20). Field trips, after-school classes, art camps, and the Hui’s amazing Na Keiki No‘eau program that reaches kids at their local public schools, all support the ongoing creative development of our Maui Youth. Heading into the season of giving, I wish to send my greatest appreciation to the wonderful community of supporters who donated to Hui No‘eau in 2018 (pages 23-25). As a nonprofit, the Hui’s arts education programs, exhibitions, and many activities are all made possible through your contributions. Thank you for recognizing the vital importance of the visual arts to the overall vibrancy and wellbeing of our community.

It is incredible to remember that nearly 15 years ago the Kaluanui Estate was almost sold to a private owner. In 2005, the community rallied to our side to save Kaluanui and the Hui, but after we overcame that hurdle, new challenges immerged. It is only through the generosity of donors like you that the Hui still exists today. We cannot thank our community enough for championing the visual arts and we humbly ask for your continued support in 2019 (page 26). From giving students access to art classes and supplies to maintaining our beautiful gallery and historic estate for the public to enjoy, every gift truly has an impact on how we serve the community and achieve our mission. Mahalo nui loa,

For many Hawaiian species, including several with great cultural importance, Auwahi appears to be their last stand. Mazatl is a graphic maker from Mexico City. His work includes large-scale woodcuts in public areas as well as graphic murals. He is dedicated to collaborating with groups, collectives, artists, and movements that seek social, political, and environmental justice in local communities. Hui No‘eau celebrated the opening of Six-Word Memoirs, an exhibition created in collaboration with Larry Smith, writer and founder of SMITH magazine who inspired a global phenomenon and bestselling book series based on this intriguing short-form writing concept. This exhibition combined the written word and visual arts by asking artists to create pieces that incorporated an original Six-Word Memoir. Gallery visitors were also invited to create their own Six-Word Memoirs in our Makers’ Space. Jurors David Peterson and Todd Van Amburgh selected a total of 38 pieces, resulting in a collection of works that ranged from whimsical to profound. Congratulations to all the exhibiting artists!

Celebrating Judy! Born and raised on Maui, Judy Bisgard has worked in the arts for over 40 years, serving on the Board of Directors and volunteering at Hui No‘eau in nearly every capacity. Judy attended Mills College in California where she received a degree in History with a minor in Fine Arts. Judy is a painter, a printmaker, a basket maker, and so much more! Her creative inspirations are drawn from the local Maui flora. For the past 40 years, Judy has selflessly volunteered her time and creativity to keep Hui Holidays feeling festive and magical! Join us as we celebrate all her contributions to the Hui and her final year leading the holiday wreath making extravaganza! How did the holiday wreath making tradition begin at the Hui? What was it like when it first began? The holiday wreath making tradition began with a group of friends getting together, collecting greens, having a picnic in the mountains, and coming back to make wreaths for sale and decorating the house. I was a basket maker and always collecting natural materials, so I knew who had plants growing in their yards that could be donated to the Hui. There was a lot of member participation and it was at least a two-week event to gather materials and make all of the wreaths. We really needed to raise money for the Hui and a lot of that depended on the members and Board of Directors, so that’s what really inspired us. What will you miss most about leading the wreath making process? What I will miss most is that it brings people together, including those who might not normally participate in classes, and we all get a chance to create in a different way. I’ll also miss the good fun we have, the comradery, the collecting, and making things with friends. Tell us about a favorite Hui class experience…There are so many that it is hard to pick! We have had really amazing teachers at the Hui over the years. I love learning new techniques, which I usually adapt to what I want to do. In Jeff Juhlin’s encaustic classes, for example, I took what he was teaching and immediately went off and did my own thing. He was very encouraging of that. There are artists in the community who have never taken a Hui class and they have no idea what they are missing! You just don’t know the value of the classes until you participate. Do you have any other favorite Hui memories? My retrospective exhibition was a great experience. It forced me to look at all of my work and decide what was important to me and what I was trying to communicate. Helping at Art Affair and getting the idea started is another highlight. What inspires you to give to the Hui in all the many ways that you do? I really love art and I am so lucky to be able to do it. The Hui is the only visual arts school on Maui and it brings in some excellent teachers that infuse the artistic community with new ideas and techniques. The Hui has a top-quality juried exhibition that contributes to the Hawaii art climate. The Hui also has more inclusive exhibitions that encourage more involvement from the community. I love that the Hui is doing a lot more cultural programs, too—whether lauhala, kapa… We are just so lucky to have this place. It is a treasure. Every visiting teacher says we are so lucky to have this place.

Molly Lynch Scholarship Fund for Women Following their mother’s passing in February 2019, Tim Garcia and the Garcia ‘ohana established The Molly Lynch Scholarship Fund for Women in order to give women in our community access to a variety of offerings in the visual arts, and advance their own creative endeavors at Hui No‘eau. The scholarship fund will give women in need the opportunity to pursue continued arts education. With this fund, we honor a wonderful woman, a Hui supporter, and the mother of one of the Hui’s most treasured friends and ambassadors, Tim Garcia. Please call (808) 572-6560 for giving opportunities and scholarship inquiries. More details will be coming in the next issue of Create!
