aving built a successful business as a beauty consultant, Ms Patricia Ng, 42, is now taking her personal education to the next level. The entrepreneur mum, who was a flight stewardess for 10 years and owner of a printing business for four years, started her beauty business in 2007 to provide facial treatment, makeup and image grooming for various clients. Having had to drop out of her ‘A’ Levels due to financial difficulties, Patricia has decided to pursue her dream of achieving a degree. She chose to pursue a part-time International Advanced Diploma in Business Administration (IADBA) with Informatics Academy to gain a good foundation before

moving on to the Degree programme in Business with Informatics Academy. Informatics Academy was an attractive choice for Patricia, as the course duration was short and enabled her to work and study at the same time. Study grants were also available for Singaporeans. To Patricia, the IADBA provides a practical framework for those who want to venture into business and manage their business properly. “The IADBA modules cover a wide range of topics, including business law, marketing, HR and business finance,” she said. “The lecturers also illustrate business theory with their own practical experience in the real world. I’m going to apply this knowledge into my business and make it better.” Any advice for older students? “Just go for it! I am grateful to my lecturers for their effort in nurturing mature students like myself,” said Patricia. “There’s no need to feel shy about your background and age – we all have a common goal, and that is to learn and stay competent in society.”

STEADFAST IN TRANSFORMATION

Highlights from HomeTeamNS Annual General Meeting FY2013/2014

t has been an exciting year of transformation for our club. Our staff and NS leaders have worked hand in hand to improve HomeTeamNS in the areas of clubhouse redevelopment, membership and rebranding to provide more value and better connect with our NSmen. “HomeTeamNS’ role to honour our NSmen remains relevant and strong,” said Mr Masagos Zulkifli, President of HomeTeamNS and Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at the HomeTeamNS Annual

General Meeting held on 11 October at the Bukit Batok clubhouse. “This transformation is a tribute to all our NSmen for their contribution to make this country safe and secure.” We have completed the first phase of renovation at $12.9 million for our Bukit Batok, Balestier and Chinatown clubhouses. Bookings have gone up for our newly renovated villas at Bukit Batok and refurbished rooms at Sembawang. Meanwhile, the renovation of the Sembawang clubhouse is expected to be complete in the first quarter of 2015 – look out for it!

Enhancing the membership experience HomeTeamNS started the transformational journey by first engaging members to understand their aspirations and gather their feedback and ideas of what their clubhouse should be like. We got plenty of constructive feedback from members in a mystery Customer Audit that we did in partnership with Republic Polytechnic. To ensure we are on the right track, our management team held a leadership workshop to define

SHOWDOWN OF SINGAPORE’S STRONGEST GIANTS SCDF NSman Benny Chew reached the HomeTeamNS Strongman Challenge finals after seven years of competing Sman Benny Chew, 27, paused for a moment as he adjusted the tow rope around his neck and shoulders. Behind him, at the end of the rope, was a four-tonne SCDF Red Rhino. With his focus now in the zone, the former SCDF PTI let rip as he tugged the vehicle with all his might,

N

building up speed until he was almost running when he crossed the finish line at 15 metres. Benny was one of ten finalists at the HomeTeamNS Strongman Challenge 2014 held on 6 September at Siloso Beach Sentosa. “I have been trying to qualify as a top 10 finalist for Strongman

Challenge for seven years,” said the business development executive with a security company. “I am glad I finally made it this year!” But this year’s Strongman Challenge was unlike any other. Having to perform feats of strength on sand, made this the toughest Strongman Challenge yet.

TOUGH FEATS In addition to the traditional challenges – such as flipping a 350kg tyre, walking with two 120kg logs, deadlifting a 1.6-tonne police car and pulling a four-tonne Red Rhino – this year’s event introduced the Atlas Stone Challenge, where contestants had to place three stones weighing 120kg, 140kg and 160kg on a raised platform, as well as a Tug of War Challenge and Fitness Model Search.

FUN FOR ALL The public had fun trying the fringe activities. The most popular was the Barrel Lift, where one had to lift and hold a 100kg barrel as long as possible. Masseurs from the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped were also present to soothe sore muscles.

Preparing for such competition requires intense training and dedication – something that Benny can attest to. “I put on almost 10 kg to compete in this year’s event,” said Benny, who trained one and a half years for this year’s challenge. “My colleagues

“The greatest battles in life are fought with the most composed mind. It is important that I clear my mind before attempting a challenge.” — MR BENNY CHEW even asked me why I always had a loaf of bread on my desk!” As a member of SG Titans, a local group that trains strength athletes and has spawned many Strongman Challenge Champions, Benny is a living example of the group’s mantra to be stronger, faster and fitter. “Being a strongman is a lifestyle,” he said. “After work I do only one of two things – either I hit the gym or I rest from my training.” All that training and weight gain paid off this year, when he finished at a respectable fourth place. A commendable record for someone who had been trying to make the finals for seven years! Benny hopes to do even better next year. “Never be complacent, as there is always room for improvement and achieve better results!” he said. “I’ll be back for next year’s Strongman Challenge.”

NEW BRAWN ON THE BEACH Held in Sentosa for the first time this year, the Strongman Challenge is a signature HomeTeamNS event that has been held for 10 years. The title of Singapore’s strongest man in 2014 went to undergraduate Tan Bin Soon.

WE’LL BE BACK! Look out for the next Strongman Challenge in the second half of 2015! To be held in conjunction with the Home Team Festival, this clash of titans will be packed with even more exciting challenges and fun activities for the public. desire to embark on a career in accountancy prompted Ms Wong Si Qi to pursue a Diploma in Business Administration (Accounting and Finance). The 18-year-old, who had just completed her first semester as a full-time student, is convinced that a recognised diploma from PSB Academy would stand her in good stead in the finance sector. “Here I study modules on marketing and economics in addition to accountancy,” said Si Qi. “It’s also reassuring that the lecturers at PSB Academy are professionals with industry credentials, so what they teach is backed up by real experience.”

To Si Qi, it helps that the hours are friendly, and that the curriculum is designed for in-depth learning. “As a full-time student, I attend six hours of lessons a day, five days a week. I take two to three modules per semester, so the pacing is just nice for me to take in all this new knowledge.” Any advice for fellow students? “While the quality of the curriculum and lecturers is good, there is a lot of self-study involved,” said Si Qi. “Staying disciplined and motivated will help you get the most of this diploma from PSB Academy.”

Profile – SCDF TRIATHLETE

MAN OF ACTION Life is a great adventure for endurance coach Hairul Nazwa served my full-time NS in SCDF before joining the force as a regular firefighter and subsequently as a DART specialist from 1995 to 2009. To me, NS is more than a two-year commitment – it shapes our nation and brings people together. I make it a point to be always ready to serve the nation. I remember in 2013, I witnessed a motorcyle collide with a van along Jurong Island Highway in 2013, when I was a consultant with ExxonMobil. I activated my team to render assistance to the motorcyclist, who was badly injured. I was awarded the Public Spiritedness Award (SCDF) for managing this incident. I love sports. Be it football, sepak takraw, volleyball, mountain biking, road cycling, dragonboat, rock climbing, mountaineering, kayaking or cross-country running, I’ve done them all. After my team won an adventure race in 2001, I decided that adventure sports was what I really wanted to do. My most challenging race was the five-day Southern Traverse in New Zealand. The exact course was kept a secret until 24 hours before the race started. My team had to navigate, abseil, cycle, trek, raft and kayak a remote course over alpine passes, rivers and lakes. As an endurance coach, I provide one-on-one training to athletes who want to compete in endurance events. I tailor a regime and diet according to the individual’s training

history. This is important because no two athletes are the same.

In fitness training and racing, there is no escaping the doubt and pain that comes when you push your limits. To succeed, one will have to continuously push one’s mind and body. I recalled one particular instance when my knee gave way after a jump went wrong in 2010. I was on crutches for six weeks and had to go rehab for six months. It took me 15 months to recover. I am grateful to my wife and son for standing by me and giving me the strength to push on and continue with my passion in endurance racing. Before you commence training for IPPT, remember to first get a physical examination to ensure you are fit to take the IPPT. Determine how much time you can set aside for training. Set realistic goals and be sure to include both cardio and strength exercises every week. Record your progress and make this part of your lifestyle, and you’ll be amazed at the results!

FOR GOOD Four practitioners share why Krav Maga has become a way of life for them

W

orking out improves your physique, fitness and health. But it rarely has a profound effect on your mindset. What if you could find a system that gives you a great body, and also boosts discipline, confidence and prepares you to deal with dangerous situations? That’s exactly what Krav Maga does, and this is why it’s becoming so popular in Singapore.

“When I was younger, I trained in wushu. And I find you need to be much fitter for Krav Maga, which is also much more free-flowing and intuitive. I also appreciate the nevergive-up mindset it has taught me. In six months, I went from being unable to keep up with a 20-minute class to completing back-to-back sessions. It’s a great combination of physical workout and technique training.”

“I used to practise taekwondo, but found myself frustrated by the rules and restrictions. In Krav Maga, I don’t have such limitations. If I can identify a threat early, I’ll make a run for it. If it’s too late to do that, I’ll try to escape. Only in the worst-case scenario do I need to engage an opponent. So while I’m getting fit, I’m also learning how to deal with threats under stress. The classes and instructors at KMC are fantastic, and I get a great workout, too.”

“I wanted to try Krav Maga after seeing a demonstration of a similar system when I was younger. I enjoy learning that there are multiple solutions to any situation, including dangerous ones, and that the most effective answer is not necessarily the aggressive way. But it’s not just about selfdefence; it’s also a great way to keep fit. I’ve lost about 20kg since starting classes 10 months ago.”

“I discovered Krav Maga in the ’90s, when it was becoming popular in Los Angeles. Mixed martial arts fighters were using it for cross training. Not long after I started on it, a gang of bikers attacked me in a nightclub. I managed to get out of the situation with just a few bruises – and without even throwing a strike. It probably saved my life. When I moved to Singapore, I was a bit out of shape, but lead instructor Edwin Peng’s classes helped me bounce back quickly. You get a great workout regardless of what level of exercise you are used to, and in a comfortable setting that allows you to go at your own pace.”

THE DOG WHISPERER Derrick Tan believes everyone deserves a second chance was a bad student. I skipped classes, vandalised school property, got into fights, failed exams, joined gangs, took up smoking, did drugs and sniffed glue. When I was 14, I got into a fight and I was arrested. When I was in the police car with handcuffs, my father said to the policeman, “here’s a packet of chicken rice I bought for my son, please pass it to him”. My mum was crying in the police station. I promised myself I would never hurt my parents again. During my NS days, I was assigned to the Police K-9 Unit. I loved my work so much that I signed on as a regular officer. I spent nine happy years taking care of 250 police dogs. It’s ironic that I was a former drug abuser who trained dogs to sniff out drugs. I hope to inspire those who are lost in life to get back on the right track. I consider myself a lucky guy. I’m doing what I love, I have my family, and I have my animal friends. I’ve always loved animals. When I was three, I would go around my estate to pick up kittens and bring them home. I’m currently setting up Cat Safari, a café for cats in Sunny Heights Dog Day Care. It’s due to open in end 2014. If you’re thinking of getting a pet, consider a pet that is senior, less fortunate or non-pedigree. Most people overlook them because they are past their prime. EVERYDAY HEROES

HEART OF A

LION From volunteers to professional lifesavers

PL Muhd Mirza, SGT Ho Jia Xing and LCP Afriyanto bin Ayub were all Civil Defence (CD) Lionhearters in their respective tertiary institutions. All three were posted to the SCDF when they enlisted for their NS. Back then, these young men joined the CD Lionhearters because they had a common interest in learning vital lifesaving skills. For CPL Mirza, one unforgettable experience as a Lionhearter was the time when he went to Padang, Indonesia

C

18 FRONTLINE / NOV–DEC 2014

to assist in relief efforts during the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004. His team taught the villagers essential emergency preparedness skills such as basic firefighting, first aid, evacuation drills and even tree planting to reduce soil erosion. CPL Mirza described Padang as a profound and bittersweet experience. “The villagers put on a performance for us before we left,” he said. “Many of us had tears streaming down our cheeks.” LCP Afri had a similar experience during his years as CD Lionhearter. The 20-year-old, who is now serving his NS as an assistant field instructor with the National Civil Defence Cadet Corps (NCDCC), shared that being the emcee for the Mercy Relief Southeast Asian tsunami fundraiser taught him that he could give back to society in small but meaningful ways. In his role as an assistant field instructor with the NCDCC, he finds himself in a position where he is able to now play the role of mentor to the primary school kids who were just like him many years ago.

“It feels good to return the favour,” he said. For SGT Ho, being enlisted in the SCDF was an opportunity for him to continue as a lifesaver. The former HOME Awards (Polytechnic) recipient studied chemistry and pharmaceutical science in Singapore Polytechnic. But as he was nearing his ORD, he realised he didn’t want to be bound to a desk job. So he decided to sign on as a regular fire and rescue specialist with the SCDF. As alumni of the CD Lionhearter club, the three lifesavers believe that they can contribute even more to current members. To SGT Ho, being able to respond to emergencies is important, especially before professional rescuers arrive at the scene. “These things happen very often, at the swimming pool or when you’re out at the mall, so it’s important to know some preventive measures,” he said. “It is everybody’s responsibility.” To volunteer with the Home Team, visit www.htv.gov.sg for more information.

PROUD TO SERVE Top NS units honoured at SCDF Day Parade 2014 wo outstanding NS units were honoured at this year’s SCDF Day Parade held on 13 September at the Singapore Expo. Graced by Mr S Iswaran, Minister Prime Minister’s Office, and Second Minister for Home Affairs and Trade and Ministry, the parade saw the strong participation of 400 personnel who formed the Guard-of-Honour contingent, Flag Party and seven marching contingents representing the SCDF Divisions, Civil Defence Academy, National Service Training Institute, SCDF Marine Command, ORNS unit and the National Civil Defence Cadet Corps (NCDCC). This year’s ORNS contingent hailed from Tuas Fire Station and was led by CPT (NS) Mohd Faizal bin Sazali. “I am excited to be the ORNS contingent commander for the SCDF Day Parade,” said CPT (NS) Faizal. “I am honoured to be part of such an important event and I’d like to thank all my men, including those who helped out behind the scenes.” WORDS CPL (NSF) DANIEL ALIFF HANSFORD / NS PERSONNEL DEPARTMENT

DAC (NS) Charles Ng (inset), former NS Commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division, shares his life lessons and 30 years of NS experience with APEX officers

VIEWS FROM THE TOP An inspiring evening with an APEX mentor n 25 August, the SPF held its inaugural Actualising Potential and Enriching eXperience (APEX) fireside chat at the Police Cantonment Complex. Eighteen outstanding NSmen and NSF officers from various divisions and units attended the event. The chat was held as part of the APEX programme, which aims to groom high-potential NSmen and NSFs for leadership roles through dedicated training and activities. The session commenced with a tour of Singapore’s largest police lockup facility in the basement of the Police Cantonment Complex. There the APEX officers got to witness the risky nature of being a Person-In-Custody Officer. Following the tour, APEX Chief Mentor, SUPT (NS) Raymond Huang, introduced the guest speaker for the evening – DAC (NS) Charles Ng, the former NS Commander of Ang

Mo Kio Police Division. DAC (NS) Ng, who was the Chief Financial Officer of fashion boutique Club 21 and recipient of Home Team NSman of the Year Award in 2012, shared his life lessons with the APEX members. Throughout his 30 years of National Service, he said his last five years were the most enriching when he assumed the role of NS Commander, where he got to lead initiatives that helped PNSmen make their ICT more meaningful. As a leader, DAC (NS) Ng believes in walking the ground during deployments, reassuring his men of the support that the Division has given to them. He stressed that it is vital for leaders to maintain a vantage viewpoint during times

of emergency and communicate effectively with his men. DAC (NS) Ng said it is important to empathise with the men and understand their difficulties. He recalled an instance where he took the extra effort to send a PNSman to his deployment venue when he turned up late for duty. This gave DAC (NS) Ng an opportunity to find out about the family issues that the PNSman was facing. The PNSman was grateful for his advice and duly completed his NS obligations. In closing, DAC (NS) Ng encouraged APEX officers to lead and serve with integrity and passion. He also thanked his family and employer for their support – without which he would not have been able to perform well in his role as NS Commander. The writer is a PNSman in Ang Mo Kio Police Division and an engineer with the Housing and Development Board.
