e picked up his first guitar when he was just 11 years old. Since then, there has been no turning back for Jon Chua. Today, at 27, he is the lead guitarist and a vocalist in one of the most successful pop groups to have come out of Singapore: The Sam Willows. Together with band mates Benjamin Kheng, Narelle Kheng and Sandra Riley Tang, the band is known for producing lyrically charged melodious tunes that have captured the hearts of people around the world. They have performed at various international music events, and with the likes of The Script, Little Mix, Girls Generation and 2NE1. Frontline sat down with Jon to talk about music, life and what was the most important thing he learnt from being in NS.

NTU, and that was when I met Ben, Narelle and Sandra.

FRONTLINE: Tell us about your musical journey. JON: Throughout my younger days, I taught myself how to play the guitar, piano and drums, and have always been very active in music-based activities in school. I started performing in bars during open mic sessions when I was doing my undergraduate studies at

F: What is the one thing you appreciate most about the work that you do? J: Making a difference in someone else’s life through our music. We receive many heartfelt messages from fans who literally say that we saved their lives, and I am always grateful that our music has the power to help someone through tough times.

F: What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced so far in this journey, and how have you handled it? J: Taking that leap into music full-time isn’t the easiest thing. There’s a lot of risk and uncertainty involved. How I handle it is by being committed and passionate. It’s a long game, and having the right support around you is vital. F: Where does inspiration for the music come from? J: From observing what is going on around us. Our latest single, Keep Me Jealous, was inspired by us observing how at one point or another, couples inevitably let the jealousy monster into their lives.

F: Speaking of saving lives, you’re also an NSman with SCDF. It’s worlds apart from your music life but are there any similarities that you see? J: For one thing, we learnt to be very organised, diligent and punctual in NS – all very important traits when running a music business! F: Describe your NS experience and what impact it has had on you. J: I guess that’s where I went from being a boy to a man! I used to be very tardy, especially in JC. I hated waking up early. But in NS, you really learn to plan your time better, and that has stuck with me. Among the band members, I am always the one who is the earliest. F: What do you see as the role of the SCDF in society? J: The SCDF has taught me the important virtue of putting others before self – and I truly respect that. F: And to sum it all up, what is the one biggest lesson you have learnt from being an NSman? J: Always be prepared. You never know what’s going to happen.

To SGT (NS) Jon Chua, these are the traits that everyone, whether NSman or musician, needs! 4

2 He is a gamer boy wannabe. Not only does he love to play video games (he lugs his PS4 on his overseas trips), he also obsessively follows other gamers in action. 3 Four men nearly brought him to tears one day. Irish rockers The Script touched him so much when he met them that he nearly turned into a bag of mush.

e 4 He is a superhero in the making. The next time someone is in trouble and Jon happens to be around, he might just be the one to save the day! Jon says that his time with the SCDF has taught him the importance of putting others first.

WORK THAT BODY Hip-hop gives you a complete workout – from having to be cardio fit to flexible and, of course, strong and toned all over. Here are four hip-hop-inspired exercises for all aspiring b-boys and girls out there.

FLEXIBILITY

Chilled-out dance moves require flexible muscles. Begin by lying down on the stomach with feet slightly apart. Place palms underneath shoulders. Lengthen through tailbone, and start to pull chest forward and up. Elbows close to the body, start to lengthen arms to any degree that feels good on the back. Look up slightly. Breathe here for at least three deep breaths. Do 5 reps.

LUNGE WITH TWIST Build up your core. Stand with legs hip-width apart, hold a medicine ball in front of the chest. Step forward into a lunge with the right leg, then with extended arms, reach the medicine ball to the right, rotating the torso at the same time. Maintain the lunge and return to centre. Come to standing, then repeat on other side. Do 3 sets of 15 reps.

CORE

CARDIO

JUMP ROPE Hip-hop uses explosive energy, and boosting cardiovascular health is important. This simple exercise is effective for improving bone strength, agility, coordination and endurance. The key is to do this every day to see the best results – 5 sets of 3 minutes each.

PUSH-UP

WORDS YASMEEN HAMEED-CHAN

CHEST

Popping involves a lot of chest movements. And doing push-ups is the key to strengthening the chest. Get into a plank position with hands directly under shoulders, feet on the ground. Tighten core, glutes and hamstrings, and lower down, keeping neck in a neutral position. Draw shoulder blades back and down, and keep elbows close to body. Exhale and push back up. Do 5 sets of 20 reps.

MEET THE INSTRUCTOR SGT (NS) Jamal bin Moideen, 43, assisted in creating this set of exercises. He is the instructor at HomeTeamNS Bukit Batok, and has been teaching for 20 years. His favourite type of exercise involves a combination of strength and cardio training, and he enjoys working with people of all fitness levels. For more information, email fitness_ workz@HomeTeamNS.sg or call 6705-9473.

A VINTAGE CELEBRATION FOR NS50 O and reconnect with their peers. Following the lion dance fanfare, the invited guests were treated to a video titled “From My Generation to Yours”, featuring a photo montage of key NS events and milestones from past to present, which tugged at the heartstrings of the attendees as they relived fond memories of their NS experiences. Tokens of appreciation were presented to nine NS Commanders who had served apex NS appointments or made special contributions towards NS. Guests were then invited to a sumptuous buffet spread, while they were also enthralled by the performance put up by fellow ORNS personnel, alumni of the Music &

Performing Arts Club (MPAC). Said CPT (NS) Darren Tan, Head Personnel of Civil Resources Mobilisation (B) Battalion: “Being able to mingle with my battalion mates, those of other NS units and our regular counterparts at an informal setting certainly helped to promote fellowship.” CPT (NS) Perumal Thanabalan, an exDeputy Rescue Battalion Commander, said, “I am thankful that SCDF continues to recognise the past contributions of the ex-NS Commanders even after all these years.” It is clear that the strong camaraderie among the NS Commanders, past and present, continues to withstand the test of time.

The event was graced by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister for Home Affairs and National Development, Mr Desmond Lee, who is also the President of HomeTeamNS. SC/CPL Nabel bridges the language gap between Bangladeshi foreign workers and officers.

CROSSING THE LANGUAGE BARRIER

C

ommunity Engagement (CE) Officers reach out to all members of the community as part of the SPF’s outreach and education to the public. However, when engaging foreign workers, the language barrier can be difficult to overcome. This is where SC/CPL Nabel, a CE officer attached to Woodlands East (WE) NPC, shines. As a fluent Bengali speaker, he is able to put

his skills to good use and communicate effectively with foreign workers. Besides SGSecure house visits, SC/CPL Nabel would accompany the regular officers for follow-ups with foreign workers on crimes such as unlicensed moneylending, shop theft, disputes and harassment cases. After each comprehensive investigation, he would advise them accordingly on

how they can legally proceed with their case. His language abilities allow him to communicate effectively during interviews to obtain essential information to resolve cases. “The Bangladeshi workers really appreciate and feel relieved to have me among them. For them, it is a proud moment to see someone of their origin representing them in the Singapore Police Force,” SC/CPL Nabel said. Once a year, the dormitories where foreign workers stay would have “The Cleanest & Safest Dormitory Competition”, where officers would conduct dormitory visits to inspect the living conditions, and advise the occupants to keep their belongings safe and secure at all times. During the most recent event, he gave a crime prevention speech in front of over 1,000 foreign workers as part of the SPF’s outreach efforts. By having their native language spoken to them, the foreign workers were able to comprehend the intended crime prevention messages. “At that moment, I felt that being a Police National Serviceman is more than just a job. It’s a responsibility and an opportunity for me to bridge the communication gap between foreign workers and the SPF,” he said. “I feel that National Service has played a large role in giving me the opportunity to grow outside of my comfort zone. Despite being a quiet person, I am now able to interact with, and give public speeches to, large groups of people. I was only able to take this big step because I strongly feel that, at some point, you need to build up the courage to face and overcome the hurdles in life.”

A TWIST OF FATE ASP (Retired) Albert Lee might just have been walking a different path had it not been for NS.

ASP (RETIRED) ALBERT LEE, 67 NS Pioneer (2nd batch Part Time NS in 1968) Served Part Time NS until 1981 at Central Division Joined Volunteer Special Constabulary after completing National Service

I’ve had my fair share of exciting moments during my service. An interesting one was when I went “undercover”, posing as a buyer for stolen calculators worth about $30,000. A delivery man had lied to the store owner that he had delivered the goods. But when the owner couldn’t find the goods and called the delivery man, the latter had the audacity to go to the store and show where he had “left” the goods, and even volunteered to go to the police to make a report. A week later, an informer brought to our attention that someone was trying to sell the calculators, so I pretended to be a buyer. I even brought the culprit

to my brother’s stationery shop to convince him that I was a genuine buyer. We ambushed him that same evening when he met me to do the transaction, and he was arrested and jailed for three years. Up till today, I hold the twin principles of trust and integrity close to my heart. Even after leaving NS, I decided to continue my commitment to the force by joining as a Volunteer Special Constabulary so that I can continue to assist in keeping the crime rate low. It has been 50 years of NS and to me, NS plays a very important role in keeping our country safe. Everyone plays a part and can make a difference.

WORDS YASMEEN HAMEED-CHAN / PHOTOGRAPHY DARREN CHANG

I

grew up in Chinatown during the 1960s and 1970s when secret societies were common. Their tactic was to be friendly, and because I was a sociable young boy, I would be friendly with them too. At one point, I was asked to join their group on the pretext of just being friends, which I did consider. Fortunately, that was the same time that I enlisted in NS. Because of NS, I learnt discipline and the importance of the law, and it took me on a completely different path. It helped that I had very supportive trainers who were able to leverage on my energy and general positive outlook in life.
