Great Expectations F

ollowing the dramatic end to the 2016 MotoGP™ season, the 2017 season is set to see new partnerships forged and intense rivalries reignited. Marc Marquez, who clinched the 2016 championship in Japan with three races remaining, can expect a tougher challenge this year. Some of the high-profile transfers include Jorge Lorenzo, who moved from Movistar Yamaha to Team Ducati, and Maverick Vinales, who moved from Team Suzuki to replace Lorenzo. With Vinales’

departure, Team Suzuki moved quickly to snap up Andrea Iannone from Team Ducati and paired him with newly-promoted Alex Rins from Moto2. Monster Yamaha Tech 3 team also features two rookie riders Jonas Folger and Johann Zarco. Karel Abraham will also make a return to MotoGP™ with Aspar Ducati team, joining Alvaro Bautista, formerly from Aprilia Racing Team Gresini. KTM have also joined in the fray, so fans and riders alike can anticipate a fiercer competition this year.

club buzz

M

inister for Home Affairs Mr K. Shanmugam officially opened the HomeTeamNS Tampines satellite clubhouse at Tampines Hub on Monday 13 February 2017. The first club that is integrated with a community town hub, HomeTeamNS Tampines represents one way in which the contributions of the Home Team NSmen and their families are recognised and appreciated. HomeTeamNS Tampines is also the first in Singapore to present Clip ’n Climb, from New Zealand, a climbing theme park featuring colourful climbing challenges for fun climbers of all ages and levels. Also located at the clubhouse is Laser Quest, an interactive indoor teambonding game in which participants score points by tagging targets in a mission that combines hide-and-seek and laser tag. At HomeTeamNS Tampines, the Laser Quest features a modern-combat theme with 10 hyper-specialised playing options.

Future HomeTeamNS Clubhouses

In addition to HomeTeamNS Tampines, Mr Shanmugam announced that the Home Team has embarked on a longterm masterplan for HomeTeamNS clubhouses. With the help of external architects, Home Team is reviewing the HomeTeamNS clubhouse in Balestier and planning for the building of three new clubhouses in the northern, eastern and western parts of Singapore over the following 10 to 15 years. With stateof-the-art modern facilities with clear themes and strong design features, the new clubhouses will be located near public transport facilities and be conducive locations for NSmen to bring their families, organise social gatherings or hold unit cohesion activities. The first of the new clubhouses will be located in the north, near KhatibYishun, and expected to be ready in 2020. It will replace the existing clubhouse in

Sembawang and focus on indoor sports and recreational facilities as well as provide indoor team-building facilities. The second of the new HomeTeamNS clubhouses will be located near Bedok Reservoir. It will have a waterfront theme, and the design will incorporate the waterfront as well as nature. The third HomeTeamNS clubhouse, being planned in the future Tengah Forest Town, will replace the current clubhouse at Bukit Batok and be a place where cohesion-building activities for NSmen and their families can be organised. Throughout the course of 2017, Home Team hopes to concretise viewpoints and put up artist’s impressions for the future clubhouses.

Home Team Celebrates NS50

The year 2017 also marks the 50th anniversary of National Service in Singapore (NS50). In line with this, Mr Shanmugam announced that there will be a series of events to celebrate and reward NSmen’s contributions. National level initiatives include an NS50 recognition package and an exciting line-up of NS50 activities. Said Mr Shanmugam, “It is because of your contributions that you have given, and the sacrifices that your families have made, that Singapore today is really one of the safest, if not the safest, place[s] in the world. NS50 is a time for us to renew our covenants, our commitments and our bonds, recognise, showcase [them] and then move forward. The whole of Singapore owes you a debt of gratitude. [Keep] up the good work!”

THE FUTURE OF HOMETEAMNS CLUBHOUSES

HomeTeamNS’ mission is to deepen the bonds among Home Team NSmen and recognise their contributions. The Long-term Development Masterplan is a blueprint for the transformation of NS clubhouses. Here’s a sneak peek! Images are for concept and illustration purposes only, and pending project initiation and actual design exercise

URBAN RETREAT Khatib Clubhouse

Our marquee clubhouse in the north will offer a respite from the city’s hustle and bustle with its comprehensive, best-inclass spread of recreational facilities. A creative display of Home Team Forces will be integrated into the design to recognise NSmen’s contributions to a safe and secure Singapore.

6

WATERFRONT HAVEN Bedok Clubhouse

Our eastern clubhouse will present a relaxing waterfront experience, with riveting views of nature, for our NSmen and their families. Spaces will be innovatively designed to host vibrant tenants and exciting facilities.

GREAT OUTDOORS Tengah Clubhouse

Our clubhouse in the west will serve as the anchor outfit for cohesionbuilding programmes. It will be able to accommodate large group gatherings and mass-built recreational outlets, with integrated indoor and outdoor team-building amenities.

A Message from

K. SHANMUGAM, Minister

for Home Affairs and Minister for Law, to Home Team NSmen has been launched to commemorate 50 years of National Service in Singapore. As part of the NS50 celebrations, we officially opened our new HomeTeamNS Clubhouse at Tampines Hub on Monday, 13 February 2017. We pay tribute to generations of National Servicemen who have contributed to the peace, stability and progress that Singapore enjoys today. The theme for the NS50 campaign is “From My Generation to Yours. It reflects the strength of National Service as a shared legacy across generations. This is also embodied in the NS50 logo, which depicts two generations of National Servicemen saluting.

PHOTO GETTY IMAGES

We thank National Servicemen for their contributions. In addition, all National Servicemen will receive a one-year free HomeTeamNS membership. More details on the Recognition Package will be announced at a later date. On behalf of the Home Team, I would like to thank you for your dedication and unwavering commitment to NS. The Home Team salutes you for all that you have done to keep Singapore safe and secure!

HOME TEAM VOLUNTEERS ORDINARY PEOPLE, EXTRAORDINARY MISSION

“I served my National Service as a Fire and Rescue Specialist. The lifesaving skills and experiences I gained through daily real-life situations made me realise the need for the public to learn to handle any form of emergency situation. Along with my dedicated team of motivated CD Lionhearters, we aim to make Singapore safe and secure.” ~ SAHUL HAMEED S/O B. SARDHAR, NTU CD LIONHEARTER VOLUNTEER

“I was a nurse at the accident and emergency department in a hospital before I became a cabin crew. My new job is exciting but I did not want to sit on the lifesaving skills that I learnt from my previous job. I thought I should still put them to good use and that’s why I decided to volunteer with the Civil Defence Auxiliary Unit.” ~ CPL(V) ANN SIM, CIVIL DEFENCE AUXILIARY UNIT VOLUNTEER

“Some of the most progressive people I know often volunteer. If you ask them why they are spending time volunteering, they would claim it is a hobby. But once you engage them on a deeper level, you’ll find that they are people who recognise that things can always be better, that there will always be a solution and that they can be part of the solution. It is both empowering and inspiring, and these are the people I want to surround myself with.” ~SGT(V) TAN SHU JUN, VOLUNTEER SPECIAL CONSTABULARY

“I see my volunteer work with inmates as a natural progression for charitable service after my first career as an accredited social worker. While conducting the volunteer work, I always remind myself to do good and do it well, and with mindfulness. May all be well and happy.” ~ JASON PEH SET CHYE, SINGAPORE PRISON SERVICE VOLUNTEER

I WANT A SAFER HOME FOR MY FAMILY. I DREAM OF A KINDER SOCIETY THAT GIVES SECOND CHANCES TO EX-OFFENDERS. I BELIEVE EVERY LIFE IS PRECIOUS AND IS WORTH SAVING.

O

n 25 November 2016, an inaugural formation parade was conducted at NSTI to signify the taking over of 22B Rescue Battalion (RBn) from 22A Rescue Battalion. The parade marked the 22B RBn’s formation as well as my taking over as its Commander. During the formation parade, tokens of appreciation were also presented to former appointment holders of 22A RBn. COL (NS) Syed Abdul Malik, the outgoing Commander of 22A RBn, said, “It has been a privilege and honour to serve 22A RBn for the past 12 years. My NS brothers’ commitment, dedication and strength of purpose in serving our beloved nation have been my constant motivation and inspiration to lead them. I will miss the companionship of such extraordinary NSmen.” Parade Commander, MAJ (NS) Jason Chua, said, “The formation parade instilled a sense of identity and ownership among the officers and men of 22B RBn. Everyone stood proud and performed their drills with gusto as the unit flag flew in the evening breeze for the very first time.” Moving forward, it is my hope that 22B RBn will perform our duties to the best of our abilities and continue to work well together as a united and cohesive unit. I also hope that everyone in 22B RBn will forge strong bonds through trainings and exercises for many years to come. I thank the men of 22B RBn and the staff of 2nd SCDF Division for the memorable parade despite the wet weather. Looking forward to many more years of national service together!

JOB WELL DONE

SC Azfar demonstrates integrity and professionalism at TPVP

TP officer SC Azfar is commended for adhering to due diligence measures at TPVP

car involved in a road traffic accident (RTA) was towed to the Traffic Police Vehicle Pound (TPVP), where it was received by SC Azfar, Ops Team 3. When inspecting the car, SC Azfar spotted a bag, containing some cards and a total of $1,016 in cash, in an inconspicuous corner of the glove compartment. SC Azfar promptly alerted his partner, SGT Tan Yong Wei, and his team leader, INSP Mong Chee Long. The details were then recorded in the station diary in the presence of the tow truck driver. The TOCC was subsequently informed. SC Azfar has been commended by his team leader for his due diligence in ensuring that the properties received at and returned from TPVP are safely accounted for. He was also praised for displaying professionalism while performing his duties, as it is an act that contributes to building public trust and confidence.

SAFEGUARDING OUR STATUS QUO I assist the TRACOM police officer trainers in assessing officers when they conduct house-to-house visits. During these home visits, the officers speak to members of the public about SGSecure and introduce them to the SGSecure app so that they are aware of the platform for receiving information and sharing feedback. The SGSecure training package aims to sensitise the community on potential terrorist threats, helping them to better react during an attack and also after it. I see myself as someone who tries to make the SGSecure messages relevant to the people I share them with so that they, in turn, can spread

the messages to others. As a nation, then, we will be more ready to deal with any possible attack and rally together to help one another. The challenging aspect of our work lies in convincing people that it is crucial to be proactive in taking the necessary actions to safeguard ourselves, our families and our community in times of relative peace. It is also about knowing what to do during and after a crisis. More importantly, we work hard to help people realise that a terror attack is not a matter of ‘if’ but ‘when’. Knowing that I can play a part in helping others be ready for that crisis scenario makes my involvement meaningful. Fifty years have passed since the inception of National Service. Within each year of the last 50, the rationale behind the NS concept has changed. Many new recruits lament at being called up for National Service, and I used to be one of them. But now, after having a family of my own, I am grateful to the National Servicemen for keeping the status quo in Singapore. As we celebrate 50 years of National Service in Singapore, we must be wary of the ever-changing facades of threats that we face. I am fully supportive of the SGSecure movement to equip citizens with the necessary skills and knowledge with regard to these threats.

INTERVIEW LLEWELLYN LOW

I

am a TRACOM SGSecure Trainer and an Assistant Professor at University of Glasglow (Singapore). My appointments are in support of the SGSecure movement, which trains the community to better protect themselves against potential terrorist attacks and to safeguard their way of life. As a TRACOM SGSecure Trainer, I supplement the existing TRACOM Police Officer Trainers by conducting training workshops for PNSmen, PNFmen and regulars. At these workshops, I share how police officers should conduct themselves when they relay the SGSecure message to Singapore residents. In addition,

CARE & COMPASSION As the new Deputy Chief Medical Officer, MAJ (Dr) Chung seeks to bring the Force’s medical capabilities to a higher level

INTERVIEW O THIAM CHIN

H

aving fulfilled 11 years of national service as a Medical Officer and subsequently a Medical Platoon Commander, I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue serving the Force as the Deputy Chief Medical Officer. My years of experience with the Home Team have been filled with much excitement, learning opportunities and great camaraderie. One memorable highlight was our NS division winning the best unit award, in good part due to the stellar response by the battalion medical team to a no-duff incident during a division exercise. The new appointment is an affirmation that there is still much that I can do for the SCDF. I’m looking forward to working

with HQ to bring the Force’s medical operations capability to a higher level. In my civilian life, I am a doctor by training and now hold the position of Director, Primary Care Academy in the National Healthcare Group. Come 2019, I will also be heading a new polyclinic in Sembawang. My present portfolio involves seeing to the training needs of various segments of professionals within the primary care sector, including those of our partners in private practice. I am still active in clinical practice as an associate consultant family physician and I’m also a medical educator with Duke-NUS, NUS and James Cook University. The professional, leadership and managerial demands in my civilian role are very similar

to those I encounter in NS, such as the need to be creative, adaptive, responsive, and also to have a heart for the people who work under me. Be it in NS or at work within the healthcare sector, the core principle of valuing and respecting people is paramount. Having been a hospice volunteer and being trained as a family physician have definitely shaped the way I endeavour to deliver the care experience in my own medical practice. Patients put themselves in a most dependent and vulnerable position when they approach a doctor in their times of need. I constantly remind myself that no matter how skilled or qualified I am, the day I forget that I have in my hands the life of a trusting patient, I should stop practising. The key skill as a doctor is to have compassion, the ability to “feel the other’s pain”. On top of that, it is important to have respect, good manners, a pair of skilled hands and an inquisitive mind. For me, doctoring is a vocation, a sacred calling, to which I’m fundamentally committed. FRONTLINE FRONTLINE 29 27
