,VQ·W LW LQWHUHVWLQJ that the intense prayers of Rosh Hashanah — which is a more serious day than Yom Kippur; our lives are on the line, after all — make no mention of individual needs? Think about it: We arrive at synagogue often burdened by worries — the health of those close, tensions with those we care for most, business and financial concerns and more may fill us, or at least distract us. But the prayers don’t go there; they don’t attend to what preoccupies each one of us as the New Year dawns; they don’t even much help us review our past year. Instead, all of this is subordinated to something larger, much larger: God’s sovereignty. We are consumed by survival matters, small and large, and the tradition appears to turn a deaf ear. Remember God’s kingship, it implores; make God’s name sanctified in all you do; fear God; serve God with the work of your hands and the intentions of your heart. Who can worry about God when we already have enough on our plate? What is going on? The tradition is neither uncaring nor unwise. By paying almost total attention to God’s power and eternality, by evoking the sense of awe and drama about the gift of human life, its brevity, its preciousness, its precariousness, the Rosh Hashanah liturgy and experience
put our eyes where they belong: on this extraordinary privilege bequeathed us by the One Who Brings Life to Be. The very expressions of gratitude implicit and explicit in the prayers bring us from our private and parochial concerns to an awareness of how fortunate we are to be in Life itself. Out of that refined awareness, a kind of alertness unique to that moment, we pray, not only for more of life — more years, more health, more happiness for ourselves and for those close — but also for a better life, not in our neighbourhood alone, but also across God’s world for all. So remembering and affirming God’s ultimate sovereignty takes us not out of the world, but back to the world: of our lives, of all of life. We then emerge from the two days of prayer with renewed confidence, both in what we have been given and in what we can do with it. God is the Life-giver, but we are the bearers, the carriers of Life. On Rosh Hashanah, we praise the former, literally to the Heavens. We thereby find ourselves more capable to do the latter — as God would want and as we so need. jmoscowitz@holyblossom.org

+DVEDUD 3XEOLF 'LSORPDF\ IRU ,VUDHO is crucial for our students. With the constant barrage of information coming from the media, we often do not know what is true and what is not. It takes a discerning eye and even more discerning ear to parse news about Israel and the Middle East.

Holy Blossom schools take learning about Israel very seriously. Our students become more knowledgeable about and more invested in their relationship to Israel. We are fortunate that for the fourth consecutive year, we are partnering with the Leo Baeck Day School to host two teenagers from Israel: Maya Zrachya and Alon Shacham. (They are also co-sponsored by Makom and the UJA). We refer to these students as the Shinshinim, which stands for ‘shin-shin,’ an abbreviation in Hebrew for Shnat Sherut, year of service. Our Shinshinim, part of a much larger Toronto contingent in Canada postponing their army service, bring Israel front and centre to everything we do at Holy Blossom. Our students learn that teenagers in Israel are similar to Canadian teenagers
in many ways. It is interesting to learn about the similarities and differences in their outlooks and perspectives on life. In particular, our Grade 8 and 9 students will make Hasbara their theme for their upcoming Shabbat retreat, and as our Confirmation class prepares for their trip to Israel in March 2011, Maya and Alon will be invaluable to them. We say B’ruchim Haba’im, welcome. Maya and Alon will be housed by members of our congregation for the school year. After their stay with us, they will be going to Camp George in June 2011. Please introduce yourselves to Maya and Alon and make them feel at home. They will be in our Schools and in Family Services on a regular basis, as well as at all holiday celebrations and in various programs in the Temple.
5HQHZDO 3URMHFW XSGDWH ,Q WKH LQWHUHVW RI NHHSLQJ all our congregants fully informed on our historic venture, here’s a brief update on the status of our Renewal Project, as we aim to keep the momentum building and begin construction 14 months from now (November 2011). • In June, our congregation voted overwhelmingly to approve the project. Out of 723 total votes cast, 93.4% (675) were in favour of the resolution, with only 48 votes against. • The zoning by-law for our project was enacted by City Council on July 8th. Our project continues to garner strong support from Councillor Mihevc and city planning staff.
• As of this writing (August 2nd), our Leadership Gifts campaign has raised over $17 million. That’s an additional $1 million over the summer months (a traditionally soft period for fundraising.) This is very good news as we strive to hit the 85% threshold — $23.3 million — of the Temple’s share of the projected total cost of the project, before any construction can begin. And, we are optimistic that we’ll be able to report additional fundraising successes in September, shortly after the High Holy Days. • We continue to make significant progress in our negotiations with banks to secure construction financing for the project.

$V , VKDUHG ZLWK \RX in the spring, when I was asked to chair this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Annual Contribution Campaign (ACC), I did not hesitate to accept. Our focus this year is on our member families and Religious School students who are unable to pay full dues and Religious School tuition; this is something that resonates very strongly with me, and I am sure that each one of us knows of someone who has needed assistance at some time in their lives. Since launching the campaign right before Pesach, I have learned more specifically what important benefits are made possible through the ACC.
Long-time members whose aging parents require extraordinarily expensive care are able to maintain their membership. New immigrants who are just starting out in Canada are welcomed into our community. Young peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Religious School educations allow them to formally join the worldwide Jewish community by becoming Bâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;nei Mitzvah. Retirees whose savings have been drastically affected by the economic downturn do not have to forfeit their memberships. Single parents with limited incomes are able to provide a centre of Jewish life and education for their children. Young couples are given the opportunity to continue developing their Jewish lives and establish Jewish homes. Parents of children with special needs are able to participate while maintaining the high levels of care their children require.
I am so pleased to see that so many Temple members have given so generously to this campaign. So far, we have raised $439,000 but we are still short of our target and need the support of all members who are able to make a contribution. I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank all those who have already given. You have made a difference in the lives of your fellow members. :KHQ GR ZH EHJLQ to prepare for the High Holy Days? Some say on Selichot. Some say throughout the month of Elul. This year, I began to prepare on Tisha Bâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Av. I wonder what the links between these very distinct holy days may be? Tisha Bâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Av is not widely observed by our congregants. The timing isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t convenient for summer vacation schedules and the theme of mourning the Temple that once stood in Jerusalem does not resonate with those who do not long for a return to animal sacrifices. The High Holy Days, however, see our sanctuaries
full to the rafters â&#x20AC;&#x201D; literally. These are the days when everyone who wants to be counted among the Jewish People comes to reconnect, recharge and reassert all kinds of commitments. Tisha Bâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Av is a day torn from the pages of Jewish history. We commemorate specific events that took place at a particular time, at a particular place and to a particular people. The High Holy Days, by contrast, are devoted to universal and timeless themes â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the creation of the universe, sin and forgiveness. So what do these Holy Days have in common? A yearning for home. On Tisha Bâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Av, we recall how the city walls were breached and Jerusalem put to the torch. We remember captivity
and exile, loss of sovereignty and the destruction of Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s House on the Temple Mount. And yet, the return that the Book of Lamentations speaks of, is not a return to the land but, first and foremost, a return to God. We conclude the haunting dirge of Jeremiah with the hopeful prayer Hashiveinu: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Return us, Adonai, and we shall return to You. Renew our days as at the Beginningâ&#x20AC;? (Lamentations 5:21). The turning and returning we seek during the High Holy Days is also for home. With some soul-searching and the potential second chances that come with a new year, we turn our intensions homeward, God-ward. Lâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Shanah Tovah!
