/1213456-7-81219:1;-<-3=41 from a member of our congregation which moved me — first, in the spiritual and internal sense, and then to action. With the permission of my correspondent, here is the essence of the note: “It occurs to me that a faithbased self-help group, different from Mondays @ the Temple, would be timely to consider for our congregation as so many aging members are experiencing cognitive decline. I see it as, among other things, providing Jewish study at the level of those suffering decline; at the same time

encouraging spiritual sharing for those who most face the issues of providing love, stimulation and dignity for family members. As Jews we tailor study for the abilities of learning-disabled, the handicapped — and might we now think of offering this kind of learning for the aging and aged as well, so that they are not spiritually abandoned in their later years by the community to which they’ve given much when able?” Who would not be moved by this? Is there anything more important than to be available for one another — both for those who find themselves in decline, as well as those who are called on for support? Is there more significant religious work than to be with one another in both instances?

Inspired, then, in the emotional and spiritual sense, let’s move toward action — and do so together. To that end, I’ve organized an exploratory meeting among interested members and some professionals. I hope we will soon offer exactly the kind of program as suggested in the note. It’s timely, necessary and Jewish. Indeed, before long I hope we will offer the same kind of support/study/inspirational groups for those whose loved ones must cope with devastating mental illnesses, to say nothing of those whose loved ones are struck by cancer. But first things first: If you are interested in supporting those among us in decline along with their caregivers — or, if you are on the front line in caring — please be in touch with me directly at jmoscowitz@holyblossom.org, or at ext. 248, at the Temple.

,D<4-9E-4D1-N=49:<49=3 for our students in Religious School? It may actually be the parents’ motivation, which is fine, but deep down I believe it is the rich tradition that generations of Jews have received through Jewish education. It is a tradition that is passed from parent to child — and the commitment to continue that tradition is something that is a part of our religion. + $ ) + / 7 $ O - C + , 7 ( . - & % * >) . # # %

Our Grade 7 students are at a pivotal time in their educational experience. Some of our Grade 7s have already started celebrating their Bar/Bat Mitzvah, entering the creative, magical community of Jewish adulthood. As our students grow in our program, we encourage them to accept greater

responsibility for their actions and deeds (mitzvot). We want our students, along with their parents, to see this stage of their lives as a time to develop their sense of self, committed to becoming active, serious Jews, at home, at school and in their community. How do we achieve this? Not by sitting back and making assumptions. > 7 H + P ># $ O - > + & / $ 7 $ O

Bar/Bat Mitzvah cannot be seen as the plateau, the peak of their Jewish experiences; rather it is the beginning of their time of learning, a time of development. It must be seen as a time for students to maintain their sense of wonderment and excitement for learning. If we had to make the analogy of Bar/Bat Mitzvah as the year of the “Jewish diet,” the years following must be committed to the “maintenance years.” We must maintain the learning that has been achieved and continue on to create a meaningful and committed life-long

learning experience. “Partnership” is our latest buzz word. Having partners makes the experience of learning and our students’ retention much easier. We are in this together. Parents, students, clergy and educators are all a part of the bigger plan. As we embark on the experience of Jewish education, let us be reminded of the partnership that we have to offer. School and home are two sides of the triangle. The synagogue, your shul, gives the spiritual connection. These three pillars work together to develop and create the most important of all — your community. # * / - C + , 7 ( . - M& / ) $ + / ( . 7 M

Together we must strive to maintain our commitment to Jewish learning — continuously, not just here and there when convenient, but continually — to maintain their Jewish sense of self, at home, at school and in our community, in partnership together.

@=3312493Q-F94D-=J8-E139=8-N1NB18E "=81-4D<3-[\-61<8E-<Q=^ a group of Holy Blossom members met to determine how best to respond to the needs of our senior members. We recognized that a good number of our older members felt disconnected from things at the synagogue, and we wanted to know why and how to respond. For some, health prevented their attendances at Services and an array of events in which they were interested; for others, the lack of transportation was a deterrent to being here. Still others lived too far away or were marginalized by social factors. And so, we — the Connecting Team — made up of largely ‘young seniors’,

came together to make regular phone contact with those in need. We have done so since, and have made literally hundreds and hundreds of calls — and helped close the gap between our members and our synagogue. We’ve helped these important members feel a part of things, even if they can’t be here. We’ve been able to relay information as appropriate to our rabbis and others at the synagogue with regard to individual members and needs. The conversations are often wide ranging, discussing what is going on at Holy Blossom, family, Israel, the larger community and other matters.

It’s been deeply satisfying for those of us who’ve made these calls. It occurs to us that others in our synagogue might like to become regular callers to help connect our members to our synagogue. If so, please call the Bikur Cholim hotline (ext. 521), at the Temple. — Debby Vigoda !"##$%&'#()*$+,)!"-%.+'/0)) 1$,2$/)"3)&.$)4'56/)!."7',)!",,'&&$$ 89'("8+:/"($/;<%",

7-F8941-4D9E-=3-)J-AS(D1:<4^ designated as the New Year for the Trees. Talmudic sage Rabbi Assi asks how it is that we know we are to be partners in bringing forth the wonders of God’s creations. How do we know it’s a mitzvah to “till and tend to” the earth? Rabbi Assi discovers the answer when he puts two seemingly contradictory verses together. It is written about the third day of creation: “The earth brought forth vegetation …” (Genesis 1:12), but it is written about the sixth day of creation: “… no shrub of the field was yet upon earth …” (Genesis 2:5). How could it be that vegetation was created by God on the third day, but no fields were upon the earth until the sixth day? Rabbi Assi teaches that on the third day God made the plants begin to grow, but ordered them to stop just before breaking through the

soil. Only after Adam was created at the end of the sixth day and prayed for rain to shower down on the seedlings, were they able to sprout (Babylonian Talmud, Chullin 60b). @ # " " * $ 7 ) ' - ( * M M # / ) + %& O / 7 @ * >) * / + - _ @ ( & `

A few years ago, at Holy Blossom’s Shabbat Fusion, I met Daniel Hoffmann, the only Jewish Canadian farmer I know. When Daniel extended his calloused hand and spoke of his vision for local organic farming, I knew Holy Blossom ought to find a way to join him in his work. Thanks to his team at The Cutting Veg and to leadership from our schools, Family Programming and the Temple’s Green Committee, we are on our way to establishing our very own CSA. Community Supported Agriculture is an arrangement made between urbanites and local farmers. We make a financial contribution to support their fields and their workers; they bring weekly organic produce for us to enjoy.

More than 60 Jewish communities across North American have established CSAs. The health benefits of eating fresh, organic produce are many. The environmental benefits of producing food without putting chemicals into the soil or pollution into the air are evident. And the communal benefits of bringing Jews together over good food are tried and true. Registration to become part of this initiative begins on Mar. 1, 2011. Go to www.holyblossom.org/holysprouts and we’ll set aside a share of this season’s harvest for you. Then every Tuesday, from June through October, come to Holy Blossom between 2.45 and 6.45 p.m. to select your favourite veggies. Each week, we’ll also deliver an additional portion to The Wychwood Open Door lunch program, to share with our hungry neighbours. Teenage and adult volunteers are needed to launch and sustain this new initiative. Together we can make this corner of God’s green earth a little greener.
